A huge name in US Fantasy Sports, FanDuel arrives on these shores with a game built specifically for a UK audience.

The game has been created from the ground up over the past 18 months, at times involving members of the Fantasy Football Scout community, who were part of a beta test during Euro 16.

FanDuel has launched today and we’re very proud to announce that we’ll be supporting the game throughout the new season, running tips and weekly articles to help guide those of you who get involved.

FanDuel will be hosting custom Fantasy Football Scout contests, including free entry options, and will also be devising tournaments over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.

What is FanDuel?

FanDuel should sit perfectly with the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The concept will be very familiar – you have £100 million to build a team of 11 players and you can enter this selection in as many of the available contests as you choose. You can, of course, create multiple teams and enter numerous contests to increase your chances of winning.

The player prices change week-to-week based on player performance and, as with many of these games, there’s real appeal in attempting to exploit value options within the player list.

That’s certainly what we’ll be trying to help you achieve with our Weekly Shop and dedicated FanDuel articles.

The contests allow you to tinker with your selection right up until kick-off, so if you’re able to monitor team sheets and react quickly to opportunities, these can sometimes offer an advantage.

For now squads for the Gameweek will be locked when the first match gets underway.

This single-deadline rule is soon to be addressed, though. Typically, squads will be locked as the kick-offs go by, so your players involved in the early fixture will be locked first, allowing you to continue to swap out the players in your starting XI who are due to play later.

There are various contest formats to enter and, while those with higher entry fees will typically offer the bigger prizes, there will be large pots available for the smaller entry fee contests, depending on the number of entrants.

Each week, there will always be at least one free entry contest for those looking to get involved.

Why Should I Play?

FanDuel ignored the option of importing their US game mechanics and instead invested in building something new and fresh.

Not only does this mean that the game is tailored to us as Fantasy Football managers, it also ensures that every player starts from scratch.

FanDuel begins as a level playing field.

You won’t be up against veteran players armed with proven methods and complex spreadsheets – even those who have played Daily Fantasy Sports for years will come into this game with little or no experience of the scoring.

That means that the Fantasy Football Scout community and other experienced Fantasy Football managers have the opportunity to become established and successful FanDuel players.

When you delve into the scoring system, you’ll see that it sits well with us all.

FanDuel use a rich variety of match actions, all devised from Opta data, to power their scoring.

Uniquely, clean sheets are only a scoring factor for goalkeepers.

Instead, all players are rewarded for tackles, clearances, blocks and interceptions. Those scoring methods obviously favour defenders, whilst ball-winning midfielders also come to the fore – a rarity for Fantasy Football.

Of course, our Members have access to a five-year archive of all the key data and we’ve already created custom tables to help FanDuel players with selection.

You can view the full FanDuel scoring matrix here.

Our short experience in the Beta over the summer told us that it’s a very well balanced scoring system; there is no single dominating statistic and FanDuel have reacted to feedback to tweak the scoring for the final release.

The game will have you considering players that you’ve never looked at before, building teams that look very different to traditional Fantasy Football lineups. That can only be a good thing.

How Do I Start?

You can register for a free account via this link.

When you sign up, enter the promocode “SCOUT” and FanDuel will refund your first paid entry fee, up to £10, as free entry credit if you don’t win cash

After that, you can begin creating your first lineup and then choose to enter any of the opening weekend’s contests.

There’s a free-for-all contest available in the lobby and we’ve already set up a Fantasy Football Scout contest that offers a total of £200 in prizes.

This costs just £1 to enter and is available for 230 entrants – the top 57 places will collect at least £2, with the winner earning £25 and runner-up collecting £15.

This week and on several occasions over the season we’ll be offering special contest options.

Look out for our full strategy guide to the game next week and also our regular Weekly Shop and FanDuel Focus articles over the course of the season.

Tadic - ended the season well, playing #10, on all set pieces, playing with quick players in front of him (Long/Redmond), good fixtures (Watford could be very weak at the start, so could Sunderland and Swansea.

Good team that, but you could (like many others) be forced into multiple subs/early WC if KdB, Mhki/Martial and Mahrez find their form early on.

Dembelé effect is mostly due to his passing though. Id don't think it's going anywhere just for Wanyama.

Maybe. Who knows what Poch has up his sleeve. The lack of first teamers in pre-season has made it hard to call.

You couldn't have predicted Dier's emergence in midfield last year.

Andre Gray scoring 8 goals in 5 friendlies is impressive stuff, but what should also be attracting fantasy managers is that he's been involved in 8 of Burnley's 11 goals whilst he's been on the pitch in those matches - that's 73% involvement.

Gray also held a monopoly on goals for Burnley last season, scoring or assisting 31 of the 64 they scored when he was in the side - a goal involvement of 48%.

Gray is looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Deeney, Ighalo and Wilson, who made the step up to the top flight last season, and Austin and Ings the season before. Each of these players gave us great value options in the forward position. If previous promoted sides are anything to go by, Burnley will be even more reliant on their top scorer this season than last, and whenever they do score, he'll be picking up fantasy points more often than not:

    Championship Goal Involvement

    Charlie Austin (13/14) - 51%
    Andre Gray (15/16) - 48%
    Danny Ings (13/14) - 44%
    Odion Ighalo (14/15) - 44%
    Troy Deeney (14/15) - 41%
    Callum Wilson (14/15) - 36%

    Premier League Goal Involvement

    Charlie Austin (14/15) - 64% (+13%)
    Danny Ings (14/15) - 58% (+14%)
    Odion Ighalo (15/16) - 55% (+11%)
    Troy Deeney (15/16) - 54% (+13%)
    Callum Wilson (15/16) - 45% (+9%)

Funnily enough, he's not in my team at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if he scores or assists around 60% of Burnley's goals whilst he's on the pitch this season given these numbers, and he should be nailed on throughout. Over 38 games, that should ensure that he's great value, but it's also conceivable that Burnley go into the international break without having scored a goal against Swansea, Liverpool or Chelsea. 60% of nothing is still nothing...

Agree with a lot of this but I'm sure strikers who failed also had high goal involvement in the championship.

Also, the lack of goals Gray scored against the top half teams in the championship last season is a worry

Absolutely agree, goal involvement for these strikers is one of the best stats. The only worry for Burnley is the number of goals they score but Gray should still be a big fish in a small pond.

Seriously considering starting with both Gray and Wilson as it just improves the rest of the team so much..

Was bigging up starting with Aguero, Wilson and Ighalo preseason last year then ended up bottling it myself as I didn't think it was enough money spent and done Ighalo -> Rooney.. We all know how that went!

I'm doing the same thing, Going Gray and Long though. I originally had Wilson but i think Long's prospects are better.

Means i my team looks like this:

        Foster Heaton

Mee Friend Walker Dawson 6.0 defender (Can't decide yet I want a City RB / LB)

Miki Hazard Tadic Siggy 5.0 Mid

        Long Aguero Gray

This was my point the other day.

If Burnley only score 28 goals again in the PL like in 2013/14, as long as Gray has that 50%+ involvement he will be gold at a price of 6.5m

      1. Camp No No
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 11 months ago

Count it as 10 goals and 4 assists from 30 matches, add bonus points and yellow cards and it should be around 120 points, maybe a bit above. It's not exactly gold, but if you think of that as a secured minimum in case he'll stay fit for most of the season and Burnely sucks, but that he could well surpass it if Burnely can score more than 30 goals, then yeah, I'd take it too.

        1. Bøwstring The Carp
          • 14 Years

120 as a minimum for a £6.5m striker is fantastic

Considering Aguero at £13.0m has failed to get anywhere near 240 minimum in his career

But yeah I fancy Burnley to score more than 28 so I'd put Gray around the 135 mark as a minimum

    9. THE REAL RON ⚽

I watch a lot of Championship football and he very much reminds me of Austin, in terms of the point you make.

QPR / Burnley weren't great Premier League teams, and didn't / won't score freely. But even if they score 30 goals, Gray's going to be heavily involved and get a decent sum. That high involvement might make him better than a better striker in a better team.

It's a cliche, but the boy is paid to score goals! Cheers Ludo. 🙂

Fair point. Like Ayew Serious says, a high goal involvement in the Championship doesn't guarantee the same performance in the Premier League.

Andre Gray for Burnley in 2015/16:

        41 Starts, 23 Goals, 8 Assists, 2 Yellow Cards, 3410 Minutes Played, 48% Goal Involvement (31/64 Goals)

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for Wolves in 2008/09:

        41 Starts, 24 Goals, 7 Assists, 2 Yellow Cards, 3307 Minutes Played, 48% Goal Involvement (31/64 Goals)

        Uncanny...

This is great, cheers. I wonder if Vokes has similar stats for 0.5m cheaper? As I understand it he's the target man but if they link up regularly enough he may be a reasonable budget option.

      1. Ludo
        • 12 Years

Vokes failed to register a goal or assist in the Premier League in 2014/15, but Burnley only scored 2 goals in the 561 minutes he spent on the pitch.

In the Championship, he was second fiddle to Ings, and plays an even more secondary role in his partnership with Gray.

Simply put, I wouldn't expect much.

        Championship Goal Involvement

        Andre Gray (15/16) - 48%
        Danny Ings (13/14) - 44%
        Sam Vokes (13/14) - 39%
        Sam Vokes (15/16) - 31%

        Premier League Goal Involvement

        Danny Ings (14/15) - 58% (+14%)
        Sam Vokes (14/15) - 0% (-39%)

Interesting, all this 6.5m striker stuff.

I think over the season I would put my money on Gray but fixtures play a huge part. I won't be keeping my 6.5 (unless they hit the beginning hard) so I will be going Negredo (fixtures) until someone else emerges strong or fixtures turn.

Gray's involvement is great but I see more goals early from Negredo's side therefore Negredo seems a better first few weeks bet.

Many will be WCing early also, meaning the 6.5 striker will be a short punt for many.

No, but I did only look at five players, all of whom were success stories in the top flight, so its hardly a representative sample size. I guess it's more that if Gray does well, his involvement is likely to increase, rather than that his 15/16 involvement guarantees fantasy points this season.

    18. Biancazzurri
      • 13 Years

I think Gray, for me, fits within one of the most important fantasy football rules: pick the guy that the rest of the team relies on.

Watford were absolutely dreadful last season, but that didn't stop Ighalo/Deeney being brilliant. Or Austin at QPR.

(Consequently that's exactly the problem with City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal etc midfields: 3 to 5 flair players that'll share the points)

    19. Gavin Pubantis
      • 15 Years
      9 years, 11 months ago

Take Callum Wilson, for example- 36% involvement in (say) 100 goals in the championship is better in terms of FPL points than 45% of (say) 50 goals in the PL..

Nice stats, but do what do we really conclude from them? Only pick strikers from promoted teams?

In my minileague one of the players used it in GW1 and picked 3 4.0 defenders (none of whom played) - so it worked well for him - and he went top of the ML (didn't stay there long, though).

I was between benching Alli and Payet around GW30 or so last season, so played AOA and benched Fuchs who got 5 points. So it resulted in no gain or 8 points I believe. Almost played it earlier in the season to bench Dawson and start Ighalo. Dawson got 1 point and Ighalo had 13 on my bench 🙁

Not a bad call. I think it should be used in one of the weeks near the bench boost as you should have 8 decent attackers at that point, and this is in turn is probably best taken close to a WC or the start of the season.

Good point on playing it in conjunction with bench boost. Generally the point at which people will have more than a 4.5 mid bench fodder.

Tempting, I suppose, because it's a crap chip. But no point playing it when you have the most time to plan you will have all season. Best save it for defensive injuries or bad fixtures.

Delofeu is not nailed, but not many are — but worth the gamble given Everton's pre-season. Playing in an advanced role and Koeman speaks of using his pace to good effect. Will get more game time if Lucky heads back to Stamford Bridge.

      Not too bad IMO.

Was always going to be slower than using desktop - as not as much info possible to put on screen at once.

So beginning of the week, everyone was on-board with Aguerovic, now looking most aren't.

Most going Aguero Lukaku 6.5 or Ibra Lukaku 6.5?!

I assume Lukaku is only in drafts on the basis he goes to Chelsea

I'm not convinced, as Everton have nice fixtures tbh

I assume this is predicting Lukaku to Chelsea?
      Looks disinterested at Everton.

        *Looked

Different feeling going into this season IMO. New manager. Financial clout. Recruitment drive. Lots of promise.

        But then Conte.

Hi all, another fantastic season approaches!
So many good options this year. Some real value in mid.
Looking at this crew for now...
    FOster, Hennessey
Shaw, Funes Mori, Fernandez, Pieters, Francis
    Alli, Deulofeu, Ibe, Fischer, Zaha
    Aguero, Ibrahimovic, Kane

Am I silly to be running those 3 up front? Aguero is Aguero, Ibra is Ibra and Kane has good fixtures to start the year.
Obviously cuts down my spending in other areas but I also think those 5.5 guys in mid are good options.
Alli, Deulofeu and Ibe are all but nailed on for me.

Your midfield doesn't quite survive your choice to put all your money on the attack-three.

no point in hennessey wont start and no need to have 2x4.5s imo

If i had that front line budget, I'd be tempted with Sturridge over Kane, especially as you already have Alli.
      Spurs fan?!

Love your bold approach but I'm surprised (please take this gently) that your Def and Mids BOTH suck so badly! If you persist with this then ditch Alli, upgrade Ibe, and drop Zaha to a 4.5 and help your Def.

Note that I too would risk Studge instead of Kane as my 3rd. Could be powerful.

      Good luck!!!

Thoughts on this squad? Cheers in advance.

    0.5 in bank

    Forster (Valdes)
    Fuchs, Pieters, Shaw (Friend, Kone)
    Mahrez, Deulofeu, Mkhitaryan (Capoue, Hojberg)
    Ibra, Aguero, Negredo
