After three successful seasons with Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas’ return to the top-flight proved pivotal to Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign.

Snapped up by Jose Mourinho after former club Arsenal opted against reacquiring him, the playmaker delivered three goals and 19 assists in his first year at Stamford Bridge to leap back into Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ plans.

Chelsea’s disastrous defence of their Premier League crown in 2015/16 forced a reassessment.

The Blues simply failed to rediscover their cutting edge and despite replacing Mourinho with Guus Hiddink midway through the season, their big-hitters proved a bitter disappointment.

Having earned just two assists in the first 20 Gameweeks, Fabregas racked up five goals and as many assists in the final 18 rounds of fixtures but it was a case of too little, too late for the Spaniard.

Although he ultimately collected just 133 points, Fabregas was still only two points off Willian as the top-scoring Chelsea player in FPL and comfortably bettered Eden Hazard’s tally of 104 points, despite the latter’s late run of four goals in the final five fixtures.

The Prospects

Last term aside, there can be no doubting Fabregas’ potential as a consistent Fantasy asset.

Indeed, the 2015/16 campaign was the first time in his last seven active Premier League seasons that the playmaker has failed to provide at least ten assists.

Even when adding in last term’s tally, Fabregas has racked up 98 assists over that time frame – that’s an average of 14 assists per season.

Considering that reliable output, Fabregas’ price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League may well prove to be a bargain if he can remain a regular starter under new manager Antonio Conte.

With N’Golo Kante on board, Conte’s preferred formation is likely to dictate how we assess the Chelsea midfield. Conte had utilised a 4-2-4 in pre-season but switched to 4-1-4-1 for the Frenchman’s debut against AC Milan, with the new boy screening in front of the Blues’ back-four.

The 4-2-4 is perhaps the less enticing of the two. Kante certainly looks nailed on, which would leave Fabregas, Oscar and Nemanja Matic battling it out for the role alongside the former Leicester ball-winner.

Clearly, the latter formation offers Conte more scope with his central midfield selection and could allow Fabregas to benefit from Kante’s energy, affording him the freedom to dictate matters in the centre of the park.

Identically priced to the Spain international, Oscar is another contender who could also play his way into consideration. The Brazilian netted twice against Milan in midweek – including a converted spot-kick whilst Hazard was on the pitch – and, having started just 20 times last term, will be looking to establish himself as a viable option under the Italian.

Chelsea’s lack of European commitments – due to their tenth placed finish in 2015/16 – also limits the likelihood of rest and rotation this time around and affords Conte the chance to make his stamp on the Blues’ starting XI.

At present, Hazard’s two goals as a sub in a recent friendly against Real Madrid suggests the Belgian is gearing up for a revival under Conte. Should he be utilised through the middle – as he was against Madrid – there’s every chance that the former Lille man will emerge as the most enticing option at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Fabregas – who is currently owned by 8% of FPL managers – cannot be overlooked. Granted, he doesn’t have the same explosive potential as Hazard but, if he secures a place in Conte’s first XI plans, history suggests he could make a mockery of that very kind price tag.

There's a myth floating around, based purely on looking at the goals for and against, that Boro are a defensive side. I have seen it being mentioned as a reason not to sign Fischer, Negredo, Ramirez, etc.

I'd like to addresss this myth if I may.

Here's the facts, Boro are an extremely well drilled side, built on organisation and teamwork. As an example, we aim to play in a very similar way to Tottenham Hotspur (Poch and Karanka took their badges together). We have an extremely strong and powerful back four with overlapping full backs, two combative holding midfielders that release the ball quickly and three attacking midfielders behind a lone striker.

We enjoy it when teams attack us and we have been highly efficient on the counter attack when given the opportunity (see our cup runs for an example)...however when we are met with a team that sit back, i.e most Championship sides last season, we tend to play a more patient style, which involves wearing the opposition down and trying to nick a goal as the game goes on. It's not a natural fit for us, and Karanka's reluctance to go gung ho in certain games did cause frustration amongst some fans.

Our position as the 8th highest scorers in the Championship last season had far more to do with missed chances than a lack of chances being created. Our problem was not that we were defensive but we did not have a Championship equivalent of Kane or Delle Alli, to sprinkle onto our mini Tottenham cake

Take a look at these basic figures from our last ten games:

    GW 46: Brighton H 1-1d - 13 shots 5 on target
    GW45: Birmingham A 2-2d - 16 shots 7 on target
    GW44: Ipswich H 0-0d - 16 shots 5 on target
    GW43: Burnley A 1-1d - 11 shots, 1 on target
    GW42: Bolton A 2-1w - 22 shots, 5 on target
    GW41: Reading H 2-1w - 15 shots, 3 on target
    GW40: PNE H 1-0w - 14 shots, 5 on target
    GW39: Hudd H 3-0w - 15 shots, 7 on target
    GW38: QPR A 3-2w - 11 shots, 4 on target
    GW37: Hull H 1-0w - 15 shots, 2 on target

You'll notice that not once in any of those games did we even achieve a 50% shot on target ratio...which is pretty bad. We missed so many chances (***cough****Jordan Rhodes***cough***) and throughout Karanka's time at the club we have have suffered from either having a poor number 10 with a decent centre forward (Tomlin or Vossen as foil to Bamford) or good number 10 playing off a bang average/out of form striker (Ramirez to Nugent, Rhodes) or quite often, a poor number ten behind a poor number 9 (Fabrini to Kike).

Karanka just hasn't quite got those two positions right yet. The signing of Negredo, Fischer and the permanent signing of Ramirez makes me optimistic that the shot on target ratio will improve, along with our goal tally.

Additionally, the teams we play this season should naturally play more into our hands and we could really exploit teams on the counter attack, if we're able to soak up the pressure well. The only time you will see us 'defending' in atraditional 'park the bus, no attempt to break' kid of way is if we are holding onto a vital result (See the last twenty minutes of the Brighton game, last game of the season).

    Any questions? 🙂

TLDR; Boro are going to win the league

Great post. I'm not as optimistic for you guys as your TLDR but I have you finishing top half.

Great attacking signings that I'm sure will see plenty of goals for you guys. I think Gaston Ramirez is an absolute bargain @5.5m and I got him as soon as he was added to the game. I also like Fischer but Gaston will be the main man controlling everything I feel.

Rhodes was part of the problem last season, his goal tally in the end wasn't bad but he missed so many chances. He looked short of confidence in fairness.

He's had a good pre-season so far but I'm doubtful as to whether he can make the step up. Negredo will start the season, with Rhodes coming off the bench if we need a goal, so I would leave alone personally
