After three successful seasons with Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas’ return to the top-flight proved pivotal to Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign.

Snapped up by Jose Mourinho after former club Arsenal opted against reacquiring him, the playmaker delivered three goals and 19 assists in his first year at Stamford Bridge to leap back into Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ plans.

Chelsea’s disastrous defence of their Premier League crown in 2015/16 forced a reassessment.

The Blues simply failed to rediscover their cutting edge and despite replacing Mourinho with Guus Hiddink midway through the season, their big-hitters proved a bitter disappointment.

Having earned just two assists in the first 20 Gameweeks, Fabregas racked up five goals and as many assists in the final 18 rounds of fixtures but it was a case of too little, too late for the Spaniard.

Although he ultimately collected just 133 points, Fabregas was still only two points off Willian as the top-scoring Chelsea player in FPL and comfortably bettered Eden Hazard’s tally of 104 points, despite the latter’s late run of four goals in the final five fixtures.

The Prospects

Last term aside, there can be no doubting Fabregas’ potential as a consistent Fantasy asset.

Indeed, the 2015/16 campaign was the first time in his last seven active Premier League seasons that the playmaker has failed to provide at least ten assists.

Even when adding in last term’s tally, Fabregas has racked up 98 assists over that time frame – that’s an average of 14 assists per season.

Considering that reliable output, Fabregas’ price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League may well prove to be a bargain if he can remain a regular starter under new manager Antonio Conte.

With N’Golo Kante on board, Conte’s preferred formation is likely to dictate how we assess the Chelsea midfield. Conte had utilised a 4-2-4 in pre-season but switched to 4-1-4-1 for the Frenchman’s debut against AC Milan, with the new boy screening in front of the Blues’ back-four.

The 4-2-4 is perhaps the less enticing of the two. Kante certainly looks nailed on, which would leave Fabregas, Oscar and Nemanja Matic battling it out for the role alongside the former Leicester ball-winner.

Clearly, the latter formation offers Conte more scope with his central midfield selection and could allow Fabregas to benefit from Kante’s energy, affording him the freedom to dictate matters in the centre of the park.

Identically priced to the Spain international, Oscar is another contender who could also play his way into consideration. The Brazilian netted twice against Milan in midweek – including a converted spot-kick whilst Hazard was on the pitch – and, having started just 20 times last term, will be looking to establish himself as a viable option under the Italian.

Chelsea’s lack of European commitments – due to their tenth placed finish in 2015/16 – also limits the likelihood of rest and rotation this time around and affords Conte the chance to make his stamp on the Blues’ starting XI.

At present, Hazard’s two goals as a sub in a recent friendly against Real Madrid suggests the Belgian is gearing up for a revival under Conte. Should he be utilised through the middle – as he was against Madrid – there’s every chance that the former Lille man will emerge as the most enticing option at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Fabregas – who is currently owned by 8% of FPL managers – cannot be overlooked. Granted, he doesn’t have the same explosive potential as Hazard but, if he secures a place in Conte’s first XI plans, history suggests he could make a mockery of that very kind price tag.

I doubt Southampton are gonna pay 11 million for a player just to bench them, he had decent stats for a poor side in Norwhich and if he doesn't play as a striker he will most likely play on the wing where he's still effective and he's having a good pre season

They've got a good youth academy. See below. 🙂

Also, Höjbjerg not only does Wanyama's job, but is, as a more technical player, more useful for the new tactics.

Good tactician. Tadic will be playing a false 9 role with the 2 strikers drifting wide often.

He's a flexible and adaptive both as a tactician and as a player manager. You have to give it to him that he solved the mystery of Ben Arfa and got the guy finally behaving and shining for a full season. I'm sure he could pull something like that with Tadic too. He likes possession football, attacking football, giving his attacking players a lot of freedom. There could be goals there. In all honesty, his team was ridiculously efficient last season, in both ends. Hard to pretend they didn't overachieve. But then, when you look at the goals that they scored, they don't look particularly lucky.

But he's a tinkerman, I'm afraid, or let's say that at the very minimum he isn't afraid to rotate, nor to draw from the academy. He used 33 players in Ligue 1 last season, 16 of which U21's. Ben Arfa at 28 was the oldest regular starter in a team that has been probably on average the youngest in European top leagues during his time there. Made great results with mostly his own academy's kids and a bunch of loanees after losing his key players for 2 years in a row. Replaced about every player by promoting the next guy from the bench/academy, GK's included. I'd expect him to do the same at Southampton, and to give their youth products their fair share of responsibility.

Some could argue Bodmer was the oldest regular starter though, at 32 or something, but I didn't count him as a one, because he played less than half of the season. But he mostly missed a half season for injury, so in all fairness, I reckon you could as well say Ben Arfa was only 2nd oldest regular starter. The point still stands: Puel's first team was quite young, and he brought replacements regularly from Nice's own youth academy. And I' just believe he will continue the same way at Saints.

I had a fairly settled team, but suddenly decided I want Sanchez after hearing he might start up front, which means getting rid of Firmino. It leaves me with this:

    Foster/Jak

    Evans/Stones/Jones/Pieters/Francis

    Sanchez/Hazard/Deleufeu/Gradel/Capoue

    Aguero/Kane/Gray

Could Deulofeu actually start upfront? The kid can score when he actually decides to shoot, that's just all too seldom, but if he was put upfront, maybe he'd be convinced to shoot more often as well. Could be interesting.

He could start up front, but it's dependent on Lukaku of course.

Personally, I don't rate Mirallas at all, but always thought he'd be more likely of the two to start upfront, until I heard Koeman saying that if Lukaku leaves then Deulofeu will lead the line.

The fact that Everton only have Lukaku and I assume Kone means that I can't see Gerard ever being a regular striker given Lukaku out would mean another striker in. I was on him initially thinking Lukaku might miss the first, but I reckon Koeman will be negative and play 3 at the back for the game against Spurs.

I'm leaning towards Mirallas of the two for now.

We've had essential players (Aguero, Agueroooooooo, and Kun.) but what are the essential teams to have cover for?

Looking at my team, I have no Spurs, Arsenal, or Liverpool cover. No Saints defender, nothing. And I go from being happy with my team of:

    Foster / Heaton
    Valencia, Evans, Baines (Koné, Lenihan)
    Nolito, Deulofeu, Bolasie, Hazard (Fletch)
    Kun, Zlatan, Negredo

To not even remotely happy to it. Looking to completely reshuffle; but what teams are the consensus covering?

City, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Southampton - the big 5. You can always have strange things happen like Chelsea next year, but these are the 5 teams that are most likely to provide points from the off.

Spurs are a bit of a 50/50 (quite fancy a rested Eriksen against Palace for example), but I agree with no Arsenal/Liverpool to start.

Everton defence could be good, Chelsea too. I'm not sure there are a huge amount of must-haves to start with, just sensible decisions based on fixtures etc.

I do the same every year. Must have coverage of Liverpool & City (forwards) and Man United & Chelsea (defenders) at a minimum I think. I have no Arsenal or Liverpool at the moment either.

I have gone for him and AOC, alongside three nailed on MF. I'm hoping one of them starts firing quickly so I can 1) obviously get those points, but also b) get the early value.

With the wildcard chip being in the early season it's worth taking a couple of calculated punts.

Almost done, just a few pieces left to the puzzle. Hopefully these ramblings will help others too:

    Best 5 mil defender?

    Morgan (no Kante)
    Gabriel (first choice?)
    Stones (if City)
    Williams (if Everton)
    Funes Mori (good attacking threat)
    Dawson (WBA double-up)
Cedric (will he play opening game?)

    Best 5.5 midfielder?

    Feghouli (good pre-season form)
    Ramirez/Fischer (good fixtures, defensive team)
    Ibe/King/Gradel (minefield)
    Phillips (rotation? performed well previously)

Currently on Morgan and Ramirez, not set too sure about Morgan though.

Matip is a strange one given he's currently nursing an injury, has barely playing under Klopp. I'd wait and pick him once you've seen more, the early fixtures don't point towards clean sheets. Whilst he is a goal threat, I would start with Stones (if City) or Williams first.

Lamela has had a good pre-season, presents good value at 7.0.
