This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

      Solid team but I reckon you need Firmino, especially GW1.

    How many minutes did he play in preSeason? Didn't look himself vs Arsenal but could be a steal at 9m?

      I'd change a fair bit here so bear with me:

      Walker out (rotated with Trippier)
      Mori out (still not first choice until Stones moves)

      Tadic -> Ozil
      Townsend -> Ramirez
      Kane -> Lukaku
      Tadic -> Eriksen/Alli

      Walker -> Coleman
      Mori -> Friend

    Afternoon, possible tinkering in progress. Currently on A but tempted by B seeing as Terry may not start & Liverpools tricky opening fixtures anyway.

    Would you prefer:
    A:
    Valdes | Foster
    Valencia | Terry | Friend (Souare | Kone)
    Hazard | Deulofeu | Firmino | Redmond (Capoue)
    Aguero | Ibra | Gray

    B:
    Valdes | Foster
    Valencia | Friend | N.Taylor (Souare, Amat/Parades)
    Hazard | Deulofeu | Redmond | Townsend (Capoue)
    Aguero | Ibra | Vardy

    This squad excites me. Which is exactly why I'd love another opinion because I'm in a comfort zone.

    Heaton
    Shaw Fuchs Souare
    Mahrez Tadic Townsend Lamela
    Aguero(C) Zlatan Gray

    Foster Feghouli Friend Amat

    I initially had Mikhi for Mahrez and also had Ayew and Wickham(A punt I actually liked) instead of Lamela and Gray.

    Any thoughts on this is appreciated.

      I think because Pool is a bit unpredictable, and that they have shown the ability to score well against good teams. They are also quite attacking, and they could score some goals, win or lose. That is my guess is to why you are seeing Pool on teams despite a tough sched.

      He seems to perform in difficult matches. Studge is injured and Klopp sometimes uses him as a false 9. His points per game are impressive.

      Arsenal won't scare them neither will Burnley away. Leicester aren't going to stop teams this year. Chelsea a team in transition. Essentially Spurs away is their hardest in first 5 or 6.

      Liverpool will be fine and score loads

      Hmmm. "They seem to perform in tougher games" is something I'd want solid statistical proof on before I start believing that the basic "tough fixtures are bad" logic doesn't apply to them.

      I mean if Liverpool do better in tough fixtures then will you sell him once their fixtures improve?

    Decided I'm going one of two ways to start this season. No messing about. Which do you think is the better approach? Thoughts/advice appreciated...

    a) Foster - Jaku
    Valencia - Morgan - Friend (Pieters, Amat)
    Hazard - Lamela - Townsend - Ramirez (Capoue)
    Aguero - Ibra - Vardy

      2 - hard to upgrade ATT if needed, so i'll choose 1 - why is Townsend is in most teams?
      I've got Ramirez as well, are you sure he's first XI?

      Cheers

        Yeah, that's a big part of my thinking. Feel like it's much easier to bail out of team A than team B if things don't pan out. Townsend is somewhat of a punt. Feel he's a good option and prefer him slightly ahead of Deulofeu, etc. From what I've seen Boro fans tend to think Ramiez is THE guy in that side and will play in the hole, which at 5.5 is rather enticing.

    Gray, Costa, Deeney would be a mean and ugly strikeforce. Scars everywhere and they all look about 40!

    19th Iteration:

    Foster/Heaton

    Souare/Evans/Terry/Valencia/Friend
    Hazard/Tadic/Oscar/G.Ramirez/Fletcher
    Aguero/Vardy/Long

    2m. itb to upgrade to Ibra/Def if needed

    and few questions:
    1. why there's so much love for Firminho? GW1 and 2 is ok, but later..
    2. Ibra is slow and out of form - even Mou confirmed that
    3. Why so much love for Townsend?
    4. Thinking about Iwobi but with Arsenal schedule..
    5. I risk highly with 3 Chelsea and 2 Southampton so might to be a bit of angry after few Gweeks..

      1. He has a good season behind him, decent pre season, OOP striker role, Liverpool did rather alright against tough fixtures.

      2. Yes, but he scores anyway! 😀

      3. Always got a goal in him, fixtures.

      4. Not worth it atm with better nailed on options.

      5. 2 and 2 would be better.

      A - McAuley + Feghouli + Firmino

      B - Stones/F. Mori + Redmond + Ayew

      Already have West Brom defensive coverage in Foster, not sold on Firmino's fixtures, and Feghouli is a rotation risk. Can anyone convince me to go with A rather than B? Stones/F. Mori have good fixtures, great CS potential under Koeman, while Redmond + Ayew's fixtures are pretty good and they could become nailed-on while OOP.

      Hi All
      Looking for some opinions on some players I have in my team as it stands.

      Redmond
      Townsend
      Rameriz
      Souare

        Got Souare and Townsend myself, decent fixtures.
        Ramirez could be good as a 4th/5th mid.
        Redmond could be gold if he nails down the forward role, which he hasn't done yet.

          Was all set for tomkins but now thats shot. So went morgan. My team is a bit top heavy with Aguero, Ibra, Haz but I can't see much value in the 7.5 upwards range until pool fixtures improve

            I used the extra 0.5 to get Fuchs. So I have Mahrez instead of Hazard atm.

            At 7.5, I got Tadic who I think is great value with penalties and set pieces.
