This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

The BBC score predictor game that they run at the Euros has been released for the Premier League. Its 40 points per correct score and 10 points per correct result. Its simple but adds another element of interest to all the games. Here's the link for the game http://bbc.in/2b7EubH and ive also made a league for FFS users, here's the pin: mtu0m1

When you sign Ayew, what do you think your starting 11 will be?

      1. Jay_
        9 years, 11 months ago

        Feghouli Ayew Payet
        --------------Carroll----------

To start, with Ayew and Lanzini fighting for one spot when Lanzini is back and occasionally Ayew playing up top against instead of Carroll

so you think Feghouli is nailed?

          1. Jay_
            9 years, 11 months ago

Not 100% because Antonio has made it clear he wants to play as a winger but Bilic has been tested him on the left for the last half hour of the last 2 games. Maybe Antonio will start on the left, Feghouli on the right with Payet on the bench for Chelsea. When Payet is back it will be Feghouli and Antonio fighting for one spot but until we sign a right back id say that Feghouli is pretty safe but not 100 % nailed

Which is the better front 8, in your opinion?

    a) Firmino - Mahrez - Ramirez - Townsend - Feghouli
    Aguero - Long - Kane + 0.5m

    or

    b) Firmino - Hazard- Deulofeu - Townsend - Feghouli
    Aguero - Long - Vardy

    Cheers.

Here's some news from TheShoeMaker about some research he is carrying out into FPL strategy that he hopes you will be able to help with.

He says: " Over the last couple of weeks I have been spending some time on Twitter and FFS listening to FPL managers talk about how they are planning for the new season. What has struck me is that many have a clearly defined strategy in mind for a least some aspects of the game (even if this is to determinedly have no strategy at all). I would very much like to canvas and record opinion on how people approach the game and how their ideas and strategies evolve over the course of the season. With this in mind, I am conducting a research project, and for those who would like to contribute you can find the first of my surveys here:
    https://mathematicallysafe.wordpress.com/2016/08/05/fpl-manager-strategy-survey-pre-season/

"This survey will be the first of three (Pre-Season, Mid-Season, Post-Season) designed to see how strategies and perceptions change, and hopefully whether a particular way of thinking can increase the chances of climbing the rankings. Ideally, I'd like to get to a decent sample size of 1,000, but I'll take whatever I can get!

"This research is purely for my own curiosity and I will publish the findings at the relevant times to those who are interested. There is no commercial incentive for me and the only reason I will ask for contact details is to inform you that the 2nd and 3rd surveys are up.

"If anyone from the FFS community is interesting in contributing, then please do so by filling in my survey and/or telling other FPL managers, because the more participants we get, the more robust the results will be.

If you have any questions, suggestions, ideas, etc, I can be found on Twitter @artemidorus_1. Thanks in advance for your help."

Hi Jonty, only just noticed (one month too late) after looking through my blog stats that this was posted. Appreciate you pushing this live, got a decent response to the poll and once I get the 2nd and 3rd phases of research complete (end of the season) I'll put together the results as a community article for you. Thanks again, and sorry for the delayed gratitude!

Finishing up my tinkering, reasonably happy

    Foster / Heaton
    Shaw / Morgan / PvA / Friend / Paredes
    Firm / Haz / Gaston / Siggy / Capoue
    Ibra / Kun / Gray

    Question:
Siggy (those fixtures!) > Redmond (I have a good feeling)?
Any way to get rid of Paredes?!

I'd switch Paredes to any other £4.0m, with the highest ownership I would flag him as the most likely to drop in price and it's an unnecessary loss of £.1

Following some suggestions I have gone back to the drawing board and found (I hope) a more balanced team.

    GK: Heaton (Foster)
DEF: Friend Shaw Walker (Evans Paredes)
MID: Tadic Sigurdsson Alli Redmond (Deulofeu)
    FWD: Aguero Ibrahimovic Gray

Personally i would downgrade Redmond to 4.5 bench fodder as you will be playing with those 3 forwards. Nice extra 1.5 to splash then

I'm thinking of doubling on saints as well. I'm a saints fan, as well so I don't want to just because I love them. I truly believe Redmond could be the diamond in the rough this year.

    Foster - (Jakupovic)
    Shaw - Terry - Hernandez - (Evans - Amat)

For those of you that are going with two expensive forwards and a relatively cheap GK and DEF lineup, who are your midfielders?

Really struggling to pick a settled side and with so many expensive mids to choose from, I'm finding it very taxing!

Currently on a front 8 of:

    Hazard, Eriksen, Walcott, Deulofeu, Ledley
    Aguero, Ibra, Borini

If you want to rotate..Routledge and Watmore, but both are a risk

That's difficult coz slim pickings at 5m. I'd go with Gradel or Ramirez with Capoue

    Feghouli or Redmond?

Both seem a risk to start...?

Are many people going for Deulofeu? He could be decent at 6.5

Yeah not a bad idea with the first 2 being Spurs and West Brom but he could explode after that, some great fixtures

Hopefully he will be doing the scoring, if Lukaku does go the midfielders will have to step up

Just looking around the Saints forums - fans on the Watford build up thread are so pessimistic about their team and formation 😆

I'm not going anywhere near the Leeds one, too depressing

Gabriel injury has really messed me up, comments on team below appreciated.

    Foster / (Juko)
    Shaw / Walker / Chambers / (Fernández / £4m)
    Ramirez / Barkley / Hazard / Siggy / (Gradel)
    Ibrahimovic / Aguero / Origi

In addition a couple of queries:
1.) If Stones stays, does he start GW1?
2.) With Gabriel out, is Chambers likely to start GW1?

    Would you have:

    A: Ibrahimovic - Mahrez - 4.5 DEF

    or:

    B: Vardy - Hazard - 5.5 DEF

Depends on other defender values, I'd want three starting defenders to total £15.5m plus a £4.5m on the bench as an option at least.
