This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

A lot of Leicester defensive assets for us will rely on how quickly Mendy comes into the team. Drinkwater + King are too easy to play through

Can see this team working well -

        ---Mendy--Drinkwater-
        Gray---Mahrez---Musa
        ----------Vardy------------

Maybe a bit too attacking though?

It would, and not too attacking. It'll be similar to that but maybe Schlupp instead of Gray for defensive cover. Our defence is built for defending, attack for attacking.

That front 4 would be devastating on the break! I quite fancy a punt on Gray at 5.0.

struggling who to pick after a poor season last year so need a decent start...

Any help much appreciated on this lot....

    GK : Forster/Pickford
    DF - Williams - Friend - Souare - pieters - lenihan
    MD : Erikson - Iwobi - Hazard - Firmino - Capoue
    FW : Gray - Aguero - Ibrahimovic

my main worry is i have underspent too much on defence in order to fit in Ibra, Aguero etc. And/or have i picked the best cheap defenders? Is Iwobi too much of a punt? Am i too light on Arsenal coverage?

I think you could do Forster > foster to upgrade Williams lenihan.

Wenger did speak about Wallcott's ineffectiveness out wide and how his best qualities are nullified over there. And with Iwobi scoring and Oxlade in form the flanks will be filled. I believe he is competing with Alexis for a striker role, with Ramsey or Santi at 10.

So yeah, it might be stupid but I'm also considering it. Or Santi who is on PK's, free kicks and corners but I'm not sure he's totally ready and nailed on.

    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

I didn't say you had to get 3 top defenders. I can guarantee after two or three gameweeks you will be selling one of your strikers to try and strengthen your midfield.

      My team is similar:

Too light in midfield, does forward line make up for it?

      Forster – Jakupovic
      Valencia – Stones – Evans – Friend – 4.0
      Hazard - Firminho - Feghouli - Fischer - 4.5
      Aguero - Kane - Vardy

1 spot left (either my 3rd forward/5th midfielder. The other one would be 4.5).. 5.5 left

    A) Fischer/Feghouli/Borini
    B) downgrade heaton to jaku + Redmond
    C)downgrade heaton to jaku and 5th def from 4.5 to 4 + Gray/Carroll/Long/Deulofeu

I have trouble finding decent 5.5 midfielders. There are some who could do well, but no one has convinced me to be honest. I know the names, but no one seems to stand out and it feels like a gamble.

On the other hand, lots of 5.5 defenders look great and looking at last year, they do similarly well as the midfielders in that price range.

Is there a case to be made for 4-3-3, should I go for a 5.5 midfielder and or maybe find 0.5 extra to get somebody like Redmond, Bojan or (haha) even Bolasie?

    A. 4-3-3 with an extra 5.5-6.0 defender.
    B. Go 3-4-3 with a 5.5 -> Ramirez, Zaha, Feghouli, Gradel, Ibe, Fischer, Kouyate
    C. Go 3-4-3 with a 6.0 -> Bojan, Redmond, Bolasie, maybe even Chamberlain or Iwobi

    Thanks!

Iwobi had a strong end to the campaign, scored in pre season and fills a gap for the gooners, they are looking at mahrez but he wont go so im fairly sure Iwobi should start. who knows for certain though

      2. Daaf
        • 10 Years

Iwobi should play the first game with Giroud abscent. Theo and Alexis will compete for the striker position. But when Ozil and Giroud come back Sanchez will be shifted back to the flanks, with Theo dropping to the bench as a sub for Giroud I believe. Iwobi's time will then be uncertain, and he will be subbed off most matches.

I'd feel pretty comfortable with JT yeah. Zouma is juuuust starting light training, I can't see him grabbing a start for a while.

We've got no CL and JT is still a better central defender than Cahill IMO.

I think there's better options for 5.5M though. Baines and Dann have amazing fixtures and attacking potential for 5.5M.

Please let me know how this is looking:

    Valdes
Stones - Bailly - Van Dijk
    Fernandinho - Xhaka - Mkhitaryan - Willian
    Lukaku - Rooney - Aguero (c)

    Subs:Jakupovic - Kante - Williams - Paredes

Potentials are Mkhit to Pogba and Rooney to Ibra...Any thoughts? Thanks

Rooney still playing too deep for me even though now being described as a "number 10"...he's just not arriving in the box in time.

Mkhitaryan played 1 minute in the community shield (mainly to run down the clock) which doesn't look good for his prospects of starting the first game. Lingard seems to be ahead of him as of right now.

Xhaka not really an fpl points scorer

Would re-think those personally, and possibly Lukaku who is unsettled

Maybe Ibra > Vardy and Mane > Martial?

Only if he replicates the form of 2 & 3 years ago. Euros and pre season have been a good sign
