This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Basing my team on the first 3 weeks then WC after international break

    Forster - Valdes
    Azpil - Fuchs - Shaw - Friend - Smith
    Hazard - Tadic - Lamela - Townsend - Routledge
    Aguero - Vardy - Wickham

From GW 4 I'm looking at getting Arsenal, Spurs, Everton, Stoke, WHU all involved, maybe Bournemouth too.

      9 years, 9 months ago

Like this a lot and the plan too but if you're WCing early I'd dump the Leicester. You could go Vardy to Lukaku and upgrade Wickham and Routledge to Negredo/Carroll and a 5.5 mid. Wickham might not start if they get Bentekkers.

    2. Lebowski85

You could bring in players from those teams over 4 Gameweeks without using your WC i reckon. Youve priced your team well to be able to jump on those bandwagons we know and love once they emerge

Thanks folks, yeah not 100% settled on Cazorla, his first season was a cracker but he definitely has dropped off the boil since. All the same 7.5 seems cheap for someone who is a quality player in a top team (just as Fab seems cheap at 7.5). Seems to be a key name on the teamsheet in pre-season tho. The alternative would probably be Siggy or Lamela, but not sure either are any more bankable.

Looking good. I'd avoid Capoue though he's v defensive. Actually incapable of shooting.

I'm not a Vardy fan personally. Would prefer Kane or Lukaku. Leicester aren't going to cut it this season IMO and Vardy's priced on the premise that he'll get 20+ goals.

Test Eagles advice for this week:

You can switch and change and RMT all you want... ultimately it's all an unknown until the season gets underway and the inform players emerge. I've often reflected that the first team I put down 4 weeks before the season starts would have our scored my GW1 team. Go with the gut, have a few differentials and strong with your convictions!

May the force be with you all 🙂

A couple who others won't have but won't hurt you if you need to ditch. I'm thinking Townsend, Redmond, Walcott, Rooney, etc. Not outrageous but under 10% ownership

Giroud is the most underrated player in the league. Was second in both goals and assists per 90 minutes out of him, Vardy, Lukaku and Costa:

As an Arsenal fan I'd argue when you've got Ozil creating the most chances in the league for you, you should be tucking more away.

Every gooner know's the famous Giroud 'cover face and look to the sky' gesture.

Agree Ozil is mint but Arsenal fans are always way too harsh on him - mostly because he's not Henry. He's still a top player with a good strike rate.

If you're looking for new teams then Middlesbrough have arguably the best run-in of the newly qualified teams so Negredo if you can afford him. Leicester have a good run in but Okazaki / Musa are punts and probably wont get 90 mins. In terms of winnable games if you're torn between Burnley and Southampton I'd go with Southampton's first five all day long.

I ended up dropping Zlatan to Rooney and upgrading third striker to Lukaku but that was a whole re-shift and I'm still debating it!

Solid midfield - if I do end up dropping Vardy from my super expensive lineup of forwards (Kun and Zlat being the others),w e may end up with extremely similar teams.

Liecester were technically bad for most of last season and it didn't seem to bother them

Fairly happy with this. Feel free to rip it apart with feedback!:

    Valdes, Foster
Friend, Valencia, Terry, Souare, Funes Mouri
    Eriksen, Deulofeu, Hazard, Feghouli, Fletcher
    Aguero, Gray, Zlatan

    My concerns:
-No Leicester coverage. I would go for Vardy if I could but doesn't seem to be room and he could be overpriced.
-Feghouli is a worry but I dont know who else I could go for in that bracket?

      I like it.

Wouldn't worry too much about Leicester.

I think Philips is a decent pick @ 5.5M, he's got some FPL chops to him and fixtures in his corner.

VVD over Terry. and Ramirez for Feghouli. Otherwise looks great.

I am keeping 0.5 in the bank to bring Hazard in for Mahrez after GW1.

    Good plan?

I'd just play Haz from the start. West Ham was tough last year, but Chelsea should get the three points if you ask me. And surely there will be goals.

Yes perhaps but I think Leicester could thrash Hull and have no coverage if I take out Mahrez.

    Foster / Jakupovic
    Shaw Pieters Naughton Stones Lenihan
    Townshend Ayew Hazard Eriksen Fletcher
    Kun Ibra Long

Might take .5 from Townshend and stick in the defence (probably Stones to Coleman or Otamendi)

    What do you recon?

Is Sagna worth taking over Stones given my other defenders are Shaw, Walker, Evans and Friend?

Also looking at the fixtures it seems my selection of Sigurdsson might not be a wise one. Would Willian for the same price be a better option?

Sagna - Rotation risk. Solely because Pep is their manager.

Siggy is a better fantasy pick than Willian.

I - like everyone else asking for a RMT - would love if you called me a footballing guru for my wise picks and astute risks, but I'm also very open to criticism.

I'm going 4-5-1 (I know! Not sure, either, but hey ho)...

    Butland

Shaw // Funes Mori // PVA // Byram

Sanchez // de Bruyne // Hazard // Lamela // Deulofeu

    Augero

Who are the rest of your players?

I'd swap Butland out for either a better or cheaper option and get a 4.5 Stoke defender instead.
I like Mori, but don't know if he plays, which is kind of important.
I don't get the Byram pick.
Not a lot of top teams in your defence, and I would consider Southampton if I was going for lots of defenders.

The midfield looks great but I doubt it's effective.

      Good luck though!

Thanks DAAF, went with Byram as done well in pre-season, and could easily take over from Jenkinson. Defence is weak. I'll revisit.

I see most people are going with Shaw or Valencia for Man United defenders. I'm leaning towards Bailly – my reasoning is that Mourinho will likely stick with him because he's his own signing, after all.

I don't rate Valencia and Shaw, from what I've heard, has actually given very little going forward in previous seasons. Thoughts?

    1. Drop Dead Tsimikas
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

Bailly is extremely raw and YC-prone and offers nothing on offense. Valencia has the entire right flank to run and has provided assists in a number of pre-season matches. Shaw has also looked dangerous going forward. I'm going with Valencia as long as I can convince myself that he's a better semi-premium option than VVD.

Bailly appeals. Prefer full backs where possible though.
Should match Smalling total for less cash.

    What are people's thoughts on
    A: Ibra 9.5 Mid
    B: Vardy Sanchez

I was on Ibra and Mahrez but tempted to switch away from Ibra considering how deep he was playing in the community shield and Mourinho's comments on United needing to adjust to playing with Ibra upfront

    1. Drop Dead Tsimikas

I wouldn't worry about Ibra becoming last year's Rooney. I have him and Hazard and, alongside Kun, those are ones I will not drop.
