This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

    (B)
    Sanchez, Ayew, Townsend, Redmond
    AGUERO, VARDY, Kane

    (C)
    Eriksen, Mahrez, Tadic, Ramirez

...you keep making me doubt my team....

          I'm logging off now....

          ...with Kane/Kun/Vardy as my strikers.

That sounds delicious, but I'd sooner ditch Mahrez than Tadic considering you already have Vardy and Mahrez has looked really uninvolved recently. Also, not considering Lamela to free up cash? Plays much further forward than Eriksen.

Yeah, Lamela is definitely on my radar. The main attraction with Mahrez is I'm planning to WC for GW4, and he has hul/SWA in the first 3 weeks, which I think could be great. Hull are decimated and LEI beat SWA 7-0 on aggregate last season with Mahrez grabbing 4 goals and MoTM in both games.

    Is this madness? 4-3-3

    Foster (Jaku)
    Shaw Targett Friend Souare (4m)
    Haz Firmino Ramirez (4.5m 4.5m)
    Aguero Kane Zlatan

Targett can become any other 4.5 defender. Last report I read said that Bertrand has a recurrence of injury from start of last year which kept him out for at least a month.

Think the structure is too unbalanced ?

    Foster, Heaton
    Azpi, Valencia, McAuley, Kone, Friend
    Haz, Mahrez, Firmino, Tadic, Capoue
    Aguero, Gray, Wilson

    Things I'm considering.

Is Azpi worth the extra 0.5?
Is Capoue best choice 4.5 mid?
Is it worthwhile downgrading one of my 4.5 defenders to a 4m defender who probably won't play just to have the extra cash at the start of the season? Nothing left in the bank right now.
Valencia is a slight risk, yes... But one i'm willing to take for the start, everyone else is sure starters.

Clump - He's out injured to Jan.

I think AT just mentioned him as he wouldn't drop in price because no one has him therefore i won't be left with a 3.9 defender.

        Thanks AT.

I think I would either downgrade Azpi or else downgrade a 4.5 def but not both.... which do you think is more important?

I would have 0.5 extra cash either way to play around with incase of price rises/drops after first few GWs.

I would downgrade Heaton to Jaku and maybe Azpi to Coleman.

If you look at it dispassionately, will Heaton outscore Foster significantly in the games you play him (3 games in 7 weeks) over Foster?

Being a Liverpool fan I know there can be more chance of returns against the big teams, wouldn't invest in the defense though

    5. Zikry
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

      Not their attacking options surely...

GW1: Against an Arsenal without their top 3 center backs
      GW2: Burnley
GW3: Spurs Away; toughest fixture of the 3 but still can't see Spurs keeping a CS
GW4: First home game vs the Champions. I'm sure the crowd and players will be pumped for this one

Sure avoiding their defense looks like a given, but their attack thrives against teams like Arsenal and Spurs who don't sit back and defend.

Just think there's fewer questions lingering over Mahrez and Tadic. Is Sanchez fit? Has he had much of a preseason? Quotes from Wenger suggested he could play on the weekend, but not a sure thing. With Redmond, good punt. Could do well if he plays OOP up top, but nobody really knows. Just think Mahrez + Tadic is a safer/better option at this early stage.

      News just in:

"West Ham confirm the signing of left-back Arthur Masuaku from Olympiacos"

Possibly btram starts in GW1 but this does raise the question.
