This afternoon we launch the first captain poll of the season, listing the very best armband prospects for Gameweek 1.

You can find the pool in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

With a home tie against Sunderland it would be no surprise to see Sergio Aguero dominate Fantasy managers’ thinking.

Those handing the armband to the striker, who with 39% ownership is the Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player, will be buoyed by Sunderland’s disastrous away record at Manchester City in recent years. The Black Cats have conceded 15 goals in their last four Premier League away fixtures to City, including last season’s 4-1 hammering.

However, under new boss David Moyes the Sunderland backline may present Aguero with a sterner test. In his last four seasons at Everton Moyes was only beaten once away to City in the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could offer a viable captaincy alternative away to Bournemouth, particularly after scoring against Leicester City on his competitive debut for Manchester United in Sunday’s Community Shield. Those expecting the big Swede, who is owned by 35.7% of FPL managers, to use his height to full effect again may be disappointed: last season the Cherries conceded the fewest headed goal attempts in home matches.

Among the promoted side’s strikers Burnley’s Andre Gray (11.2% FPL ownership) could be the pick of the bunch. He certainly has form on his side, after netting nine goals in six pre-season outings. In addition, he faces a Swansea side that has had to cope with late returns of many of their Euro 16 stars, including skipper Ashley Williams who is far from certain to be on the Swans’ teamsheet.

Despite missing pre-season, Gylfi Sigurdsson could factor into Fantasy managers’ thinking for Swansea. With Andre Ayew’s departure seemingly imminent, the Icelandic international, who has a 9.3% ownership, looks to be the outright pick of the Swans assets this season.

For Southampton’s home game against Watford Dusan Tadic has done enough in pre-season to impress. Under new manager Claude Puel he has been fielded in friendlies in an advanced central attacking role at the tip of a midfield diamond. This has gone largely unnoticed by FPL managers, with just 4.6% owning the Serb. New recruit from Norwich, Nathan Redmond, is another possibility for those looking to take a captaincy punt on a Saints player, but with pitch time not guaranteed he just failed to make our shortlist.

With just 26 minutes of pre-season action for West Ham, Dimitri Payet is not certain to start away to Chelsea, making him a risky pick for the armband. Nevertheless, once he gets into his stride we are expecting him to be a strong candidate to challenge Aguero for the captaincy in the Gameweeks to come. With 31% ownership he is also one of the most popular players in FPL.

Our final mention goes to Liverpool pair Sadio Mane and Robert Firmino, who are owned by 10.9% and 8.4% of FPL managers respectively. The midfield duo have four goals between them in pre-season and face an Arsenal defence decimated by injury and international tournament fatigue.

We will revisit the poll standings at the end of the week in the Gameweek 1 Captain Sensible article.

Non Ibra team. Defence on the weak side but it's not bad I think

    Foster - Jaku
    Shaw - Pieters - McAuley - Kone - Friend
    Hazard - Sanchez - Tadic - Gradel - Capoue
    Kun - Vardy - Gray

    Thoughts on my 3-5-2?
Think it is the best formation this season.

    Valdes/Jak
    Terry/Shaw/Valencia/Kingsley/Chambers
    Hazard/Redmond/Martial/Capoue/Gradel
    Kun/Lukaku/Gray

    Cheers

On Morgan. Stones and Williams would be ahead of him if they weren't transfer risks. Don't want to pick them only for them to be eased into their new club or something.

This, but also concerned having two united defenders, downgrade one to Morgan / Stones and then you spread risk and can get in 3rd United player if they take off.

I thought Ludo's comments the other day about perceived value of a player depending on their price was quite interested. Essentially saying that Kane would be in more teams if he was £12m.

I wonder if it's price that's stopping me looking at 2 x 6.5m strikers and bulking the midfield.

I have it in my head that Redmond is a good pick for the start but Tadic is an even better pick but is it just the 1.5m extra that's making me lean that way?

Potentially. I'm not his biggest fan from an FPL point of view anyway (wrongly of course with last season).

If he was £10m or £10.5 I don't think he'd be in more teams though - would always prefer Sanchez/Hazard

Tadic a known quantity and on all set pieces. Redmond we're unsure where he'll start and as new team.

@ x 6.5 could work but you're paying that premium on the 9.0's and over because again they're a known quantity.

I feel much safer with Vardy, AGuero and Gray for example than Aguero and two 6.5's. I know what Vardy can do, with the 6.5's i'm hoping that they can do it.

Yeah that's fair enough. Probably not the greatest examples on my part but I do think the price has a bigger affect on our thinking than we like to think.

I suppose for good reason in most cases.

          • 16 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

I think to start the season we're better with the known quantities for sure. There'll be that one FPL player who picks all the gems but its just chance.

We can very easily get carried away with 'Oscar may start he's got a good chance of scoring, Negredo and Rondon have decent early fixtures' and before we know it our teams decimated of any known reliability.

But then again thats just my approach and as i say there'll be some maverick who'll have 180 points after two weeks after picking the wild card players that do come off.

            • 12 Years

Exactly. Take a chance or two with them, but if you get all of Gray, Negredo, Lamela, Redmond, Bojan, Oscar, you're asking for trouble.

That said, I just listed half of my probable starting lineup there. 😆

It really depends on the player. However you look at it, Tadic is a better option than Redmond (T is on set pieces, nailed on, plays equally as far forward, better player, proven). But Lamela is a better option than Eriksen, and possibly Alli even without taking price into consideration.

      1. TheDogTor

Not sure that's true really. Kane isn't in teams because of no Dembele.

And again, I don't generally think one player is stronger than another due to price ie. Barkley v Deulofeu

      1. Camp No No
        • 12 Years

So, as we can see, once again, the reasons why these players are not selected more widely is not their low price. Redmond, no certainty of starts, wealth of options in midfield, Tadic being a proven wonderful player; Kane, playing deep without Dembelé, possibly still tired.

I think most of the time we are eager to get any cheap player who starts to act like a big hitter.

That 2*6,5 could well be the way to go, though.

Can't know that yet, but for me he seems to be both logically and by the pre-season the most nailed-on striker for So'ton. Puel loves to rotate though, but some players will turn out to be absolute keys to his system that he will not want to give rest, and I think Long and Tadic are most likely to be those guys in attack.

I still think he could do damage off the bench, if he gets say 30mins. Should start instead of Okazaki but i am uneasy as well

If West Ham get Ayew, will he play as a lone striker, or will he be competition/rotation risk for Tore, Feghouli, Payet, Lanzini,...?

I think there are better options than Clichy in that price bracket. City don't look at all convincing defensively.

Been tinkering all day and about to lose my mind

    Foster/Jaku

    Valencia/Morgan/Friend/McAuley/4.0

    Hazard/Alli/Firmino/Feghouli/4.5

    Kun/Zlatan/Gray

Really need second eyes and any advice would be much appreciated.

    RMT please guys:

    Foster
    Walker/Shaw/Friend
    Mhik/Ramirez/Mahrez/Hazard
    Gray/Aguero/Lukaku

    Bench: Jaku/Højbjerg/Koné/B.Smith

    0 ITB

Bit concerned about Mhik, didn't get much game time in the CS, is he likely GW1?
Real doubts in my mind over Mahrez after the CS but he's with Hull GW1 seems to good to pass up on.

    What's your ITB strategy?

ie, do you keep money in the bank at the start to cover early moves or do you invest it all in the first squad?

I have kept 1.0 ITB just to keep my options open at different price points, Hazard > Sanchez etc.

If I can keep0.5 that would be great. It rarely happens though.
