It’s time for the first pre-Gameweek members article of the 2016/17 season as we check out the main captaincy contenders on offer. As usual, we analyse the Opta numbers and also check up on the Rate My Team ratings before offering up a couple of differential options in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Not surprisingly, Sergio Aguero is the outright frontrunner for our Gameweek 1 Captain Poll, with over 55% of the votes cast ahead of City’s home encounter against Sunderland.

The Argentine netted 15 of his 24 goals at the Etihad last time around and faces a Black Cats backline that was breached more times on their travels than any other side in 2015/16.

Sunderland managed just two away clean sheets all season and given that Aguero has scored in both his pre-season matches, we can’t see the visitors spoiling Pep Guardiola’s first match in charge.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic takes the runners-up spot ahead of his Premier League debut for United. The second most popular player in Fantasy Premier League, he’s selected by 14% after notching twice over the recent pre-season matches, including a Community Shield winner against Leicester.

Having already clinched the first silverware of the season, United will roll up to Dean Court in confident mood. Bournemouth boasted the second-worst home defence in the league last year – only Villa conceded more – and managed just four clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez head the chasing pack behind the big Swede.

Selected by just 5% and 4% respectively for Leicester’s trip to crisis club Hull, the duo look very viable differentials this weekend – both bagged double-figure goal hauls on their travels last term, with 12 of Mahrez’ 17 strikes arriving on the road.

Further down, Eden Hazard (3%) and Burnley’s Andre Gray (2%) offer form alternatives for their home encounters against West Ham and Swansea.

Having scored nine times over the summer, the latter, in particular, could prove a very brave punt – the Swans conceded in all nine away fixtures under Francesco Guidolin in 2015/16 and are reeling from the departure of former skipper Ashley Williams.

    B) Start with Morgan + 0.5 in the bank, get Coleman in if EVE look good

Bad idea to pick both KDB and Lukaku?
Currently on them, but thinking of getting in Silva and Vardy for the week.

    bottomed.

I have 1.5 in the bank. I could also downgrade my defence to have a bit more to jump on Sanchez and upgrade Redmond (if he flops this weekend). Hold or should I free up funds at the back? If the latter, which 4.5 defenders should I get?

    Heaton
    Stones / Friend / VVD
    Tadic / Redmond / Firmino / Hazard
    Vardy / Aguero / Gray

    Foster; Evans, Capoue, Amat

Nice team. Wouldn't worry about Redmond too much at that price.

1.5m will be handy for Vardy > Ibra or Hazard > Sanchez. so just sit tight

Don't sleepwalk into a FFS soup du jour team.

    consider:

The words "Redmond" and "Thierry" have never been uttered in the same sentence until yesterday.
Jakupovic may cost 4m, but it will cost you your FT plus at least one 4pt hit to get rid of him when Tony Pulis nickles and dimes you to your wits end.
United, City and Chelsea have brand new coaches and a GDP worth of new players with no PL experience, each. They're living in a new country, a new house, playing for new managers, with teammates who don't speak their language. They're even driving new cars down the wrong side of new narrow roads. Their lives are upside down, and 2 or 3 may have the goods but the other 2 dozen will cost you a FT to ditch.

Be careful. Be conservative. Getting anywhere is a marathon. Go with your gut and watch with your own eyes.

Generally I agree with conservative choices.

But there are situations in those teams that make certain players worthwhile.

Redmond is an interesting one. I'm going to have him as my punt. All the 5.5m-6.5m are up in the air. Gotta buy a ticket for one of them 🙂

I have a feeling this Amat pick is going to end in tears. I understand the need to squeeze every 0.5m out of our teams but I just can't see him starting consistently. Now that's fine if you're planning an early WC but he has too high an ownership for you not to lose value when he is no longer a starter.

One of the most frustrating transfers to do is a non-playing 4.0m and dropping defender to a 4.0m defender who you will rarely start. It just seems sensible to me to get an extra 4.5m who is nailed, and with relatively low ownership. A few goals or CSs and he skyrockets, plus you'll likely play him sometimes as part of a rotation, and he'll be more reliable for injuries. With so much value across defences I really think we have to avoid for now.

Additionally, a downgrade from a 4.5m to a 4.0m in a few gws when a 4.0m defender emerges will feel good. You'll be rescuing 0.5m and you'll have confidence your 4.0m will play.

Very true. If it weren't for Hull City, we'd all be talking about what a dumpster fire Swansea could become.

I've been thinking similar...all of the popular 4.0 defs are 3.9's or a four point hit waiting to happen.
