Having already signed Paddy McNair and Donald Love from his former side Man United, new Sunderland boss David Moyes once again looked to Old Trafford for fresh faces, with Belgian international Adnan Januzaj joining the Black Cats on a season-long loan.

Speaking about his move to the north east, Januzaj provided an insight into what he expects from himself, and how he hopes to become a fans favourite at the Stadium of Light:

“My job is to score goals and assist goals. The fans come to the stadium to enjoy football and watch players that make things happen, so I want to be one of those players and make them happy. David Moyes was key to me coming here and I appreciate the opportunity because I want to show people what I can do.”

The History

Born in Brussels, Belgium, Januzaj began his youth career with FC Brussels, before joining Anderlecht’s academy at the age of 10. He spent six years with the Belgian giants prior to moving to Man United at the age of 16 in March 2011.

Having impressed for the reserves during the 2012/13 campaign, winning the 2013 Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player Of The Year award, Januzaj made his competitive debut under new United boss Moyes in the 2013 Community Shield against Wigan, coming on as a late substitute.

The young attacker was handed his Premier League debut a month later, again as a substitute, during a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. His first start ironically came against Sunderland, with the Belgian scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory for United.

He ended the 2013/14 campaign with four strikes and as many assists from 27 league appearances, but under new United boss Louis van Gaal, Januzaj’s progress stalled, playing only 18 league matches in 2014/15, and failing to register any attacking returns.

There was some hope he could re-establish himself at Old Trafford at the start of last season, having scored the wining goal in a 1-0 win at Aston Villa in August, but the youngster was sent out on loan to German side Borussia Dortmund.

Januzaj failed to make an impression in the Bundesliga though, only mustering two assists in six appearances, before returning to Manchester in January. He remained out of favour under Van Gaal during the second half of last season, only managing three substitute appearances in the league.

After some confusion over whom Januzaj would represent at international level, he committed himself to Belgium ahead of the 2014 World Cup. He made his official debut against Tunisia in June 2014, but only featured once in Brazil. He has since struggled to get into the Belgian squad, and is currently stuck on six caps for his country.

The Prospects

Considering that Januzaj’s big breakthrough came under the tutelage of Moyes, it’s no surprise to see the two linking up once again.

Speaking about the Belgian, Moyes expressed his belief that Januzaj still has the potential to succeed at the highest level, but the time for excuses was fast running out:

“This boy can play two or three different positions, he’s got an ability to go past people, score goals, make goals. He’s got the talent to be a big, big player. I’ve said to Adnan, you need to stop blaming everyone else for what’s gone wrong. This loan’s a little bit of a risk. I’ve told Adnan to look at himself and realise that it’s down to him to change it; it can’t always be the manager’s fault or the coach’s fault that he hasn’t progressed.”

Januzaj looks capable of featuring in all three attacking midfield positions of the 4-2-3-1 formation used by Moyes in his first game in charge against Man City last Saturday.

The Belgian was stationed on the right wing when introduced off the bench after 64 minutes, and he encouragingly played a part in the build up to Jermain Defoe’s equaliser. The 21-year-old was also handed corner duties following his introduction, possibly adding a further string to his bow from a Fantasy perspective.

Januzaj looks set to be battling against the likes of Fabio Borini, Wahbi Khazri, Duncan Watmore, Jeremain Lens and Lynden Gooch for playing time at the Stadium of Light. Nonetheless, his history under Moyes indicates that, if he can find some consistency, Januzaj has the potential to nail down a regular starting berth.

During 2013/14, when Januzaj first broke through under Moyes, he notably averaged a key pass every 56 minutes, while he managed a goal attempt every 36.9 minutes. By comparison, neither Khazri (46.4), Lens (52.4) or Watmore (72.1) could better the Belgian for shots on goal last season.

Lens (75.7) and Watmore (77.6) both trailed Januzaj for key passes too, although Khazri did better the Belgian international in that regard, averaging a key pass every 41.3 minutes.

Januzaj’s price tag of just 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) certainly makes him an interesting proposition, but we may have to wait until he gets a few starts under his belt before being able to fully assess his prospects.

Sunderland have four home fixtures (MID, sot, EVE, tot, CPL, WBA) in the next six Gameweeks, affording Januzaj a chance to stake a claim for inclusion on Moyes’ plans.

With Defoe currently the strongest option from the Sunderland attack, the path is clear for Januzaj to emerge as the leading midfield option on Wearside. His price tag is certainly conducive to that becoming a reality, and if his Black Cats debut is anything to go by, it may not take Moyes too long before he can bring the best out of a player that was once described by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville as having the potential to become one of the best players in the world.

Big night tonight for Zlatan owners/non owners tonight.

Most of the game will be captaining Aguero freeing up a 45% striker to inflict maximum damage in their first game at Old Trafford.

Owners don't even need to captain him to have a big impact, could be a long night for non owners.

I'm not sure you can cover a player with 45% ownership, it's not about finding alternatives with that level of ownership as any sort of score moves you and half the game away from non owners.

A brace and bonus points would cause carnage, 9 points helped ranks jump at the weekend.

What if i scored more points with other players? Is there something im missing where points from players who are owned more are worth more than points from players who are owned less?

Well, they are not worth less but if approx 1.6m players are all scoring points from Zlatan and all moving up the ranks together, your alternative would have to do something special to cut through all those movers.

i dont see alternatives worse than zlatan though lol. i like aguero as a captaincy option way better. Dont see the point in having zlatan aswell. not going to put all my chips on 2 players.

Yeah off course, if you don't care about your rank than alternatives are the way to go, if you do then you're just urinating in the wind without.

I'm not sure you understand how maths works. If 1.6 million players all went 9 points ahead of you, then your alternative scored 10 points in the next game, you would overtake all of them. You don't have to "cut though them"

I'm not touchy and I understand maths but I also understand how ownership works which is why very few good players go without Aguero every year.

Good luck to all who ignore the bloke with 45% ownership, not for me.

His age is neither here nor there in fantasy football, he could look like a slow slug for all anyone needs to care, he just needs to score, he just needs to put the ball in the back of the net.

Can't argue with 3 goals in 3 United games for an old man, he didn't do much in the last game, scored a goal and got the maximum bonus, if that's not a danger sign nothing will be.

Lol sheesh. Didnr expect to see this going on within my post. Settle down robotnik. His allowed to be confident in his zlatan pick and i can see why. Just trying to justify if its worth him and aguero since i still put aguero above him.

I think zlatans goalscoring will depend on how well man united are playing. Watched all his goals from last season just now. With afew of the spectacular the majority were put on a platter for him by a dominate team, along with some penalties. But dont see this as me saying he wont do well, from what i understand, you give that guy a chance and he takes it. Watching this southampton game very closely, seeing as ill be able to get zlat in for free if i decided to for next gw (without getting rid of aguero)

Weak people who dont have him fear him scoring will give 45% of players points.
Strong people who dont have him, like me, dont care, and trust Man Utds ability to win a boring 1-0 with a Bailly set piece goal.

French league may not be as competitive, but that doesn't mean the opposition just stand there and let him do what he wants, lol. He still had to work for the goals and avoid challenges, find space, make runs, and finish chances.

If the French Ligue was so poor then every striker would return Ibra's numbers. Point being they don't, so obviously he's a cut above the rest.

And as others have mentioned, he didn't just play in the French Ligue and has a good record in tougher leagues, especially at the time he played in those leagues.

Any player with his scoring record and 2 goals in 2 away games after what many have described as average performances, has to leave non owners a little concerned considering he's yet to truly click with his new team which is known as an attacking side historically.

Signs all point to an improvement will come, and I wouldn't want to be a non owner when that happens. 😉

        Not as good these days?

He just had his best season ever last season, lol.

Don't buy into the age debate. Base your thinking on an individual players fitness as these days football is not like it use to be even 20 years ago.

The rapid development in medical and nutritional science amongst other areas mean players now can remain at the peak of their abilities for much longer.

In physical fitness age I wouldn't be surprised if Ibra was around the 27-29 years old mark considering he set club records during his medical.

I think people seem to focus on why he can't succeed rather than looking at the obvious reasons why he can. 😉

People that can't afford him or can't find balance with him and Aguero will look for excuses to justify their thinking, they did it all last year with Vardy but in reverse, he was cheap so that run couldn't possibly continue, how did that work out?

He may be old but he's played 3 times for United now and scored 3 goals, he's not played well but now they are at home and he's had two or three weeks proper training with the team, we may be about to see what he's really made off tonight.

I agree and expect it, especially from United haters, lol.

The truth is none of us know how he will perform over the season, but if people are going to point out reasons why he won't succeed at united, I think it's only fair to point out the reasons why he could so the argument is balanced enough for readers of these comments to make their own judgement.

Just to say a player is too old or the league is much tougher is very vague reasoning if you also don't consider the other factors that surround those arguments as I pointed out in my previous comments.

Just for the record I'm obviously a United supporter so some might ignore my comments as bias, but I can assure you all that I've followed Ibra's whole career and would be making these same comments if Ibra went to another club other than MU. 🙂

I think it's important to put our hate to one side when playing fpl, otherwise I would never have players like Aguero, Sanchez, Kane and Hazard in my team, and given they are some of the best players in the world that wouldn't be very smart, lol.

Aguero is another great option also, obviously.

To be honest I'm still torn between both but these arguments are slightly convincing me that Ibra might be worth the punt this particular gw.

Maybe I'll just keep changing back and forth until the deadline comes and locks my team. That way whoever was last picked will be captain, lol.

        I agree.

A few big captain hauls from Kun, Ibra or Hazard and you'll be shocked how far you'll slip in the rankings. You're then playing catch up all season.

You need at least one or even two of those big hitters, especially considering they play for the 3 teams that have been earmarked early to be competing for the title and top 4.

So tempted to save FT but think forced into making a change with feghouli...havnt heard any update about him so assume he is going to out and his price shd drop tonight

    foster -- jaku
stones valencia kone --- friend pieters
hazard firmino townsend redmond --- feghouli
    kun ibra gray

    A: feghouli >> ramirez..and bench redmond
B: feghouli >> capoue to avoid price drop and gain capoue rise and start redmond..will eventually have my fifth mid at 4.5 so might as well get now
C: save FT and consider doing
C1: firmino + feghouli >> mahrez + capoue next gw if mahrez scores
C2: gray + feghouli >> benteke + capoue next gw
    C3: stones + feghouli >> baines + capoue + 0.5m itb next gw

That's the beauty of Friday night PL.

Hold Feghouli, play the other 7 attackers....then monitor Fegh price tonight and remove him after ManU game.

what diff if i remove him after the man u game?

yes i could avoid the price drop but wont be able to determine whether to downgrade to capoue or get ramirez..plus since most of the games are tomz, will have no idea about a new bandwagon

          -you solve your benching dilemma
-the rest of your front 7 will all play, so get Capoue after the manU game

...effectively you roll a trade and have 2 FT's after manU game...you never know you might not want Ramirez next GW or Ibra/Redmond/Val could get injured tronight

yes i understand what you mean...would be a lot of better if he didnt fall in price tonight as i could asses any other players tomz
