Moving Target

A reported target of Alan Pardew’s from the beginning of this transfer window, Christian Benteke finally completed his move to Crystal Palace on Saturday, joining the Eagles for a club-record fee, reportedly in the region of £27 million.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Selhurst Park and, speaking to the club’s official website, Pardew hopes the Belgian can fill the void up front that has been evident since the former Newcastle manager arrived in January 2015:

“We lack goals and some firepower and I would think Christian’s arrival will enhance every player within the squad. There’s one thing that’s always impressed me about him, he gets the sort of goals you would expect, but now and then he just pulls a rabbit out of the hat with a goal.”

The History

Born in Kinshasa, Zaire, Benteke’s family immigrated to Liege, Belgium in 1993. His big break came in 2004, when at the age of 14, he linked up with the Standard Liege youth set-up.

Two year later, the striker moved to fellow Belgian side Genk, and it was there where he made his professional debut in February 2008. In 2007/08, he bagged two assists in seven league appearances but, having only featured in three league matches in the first half of the following season, he re-joined Standard Liege in January 2009.

Between 2009 and 2011, Benteke took in loan spells at K.V. Kortrijk and KV Mechelen and began to make his mark. The striker scored 22 goals and claimed 10 assists in 56 league appearances, and returned to Genk ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.

Benteke scored 16 goals and registered nine assists in 36 league matches that season and, in the summer of 2012, Aston Villa swooped to sign the forward for a fee of around £7 million.

He instantly made an impression in the Premier League, scoring 19 goals and setting up four in 34 outings in his maiden campaign, and over the following two seasons he notched a further 23 goals and four assists in 55 Premier League appearances for a struggling midlands outfit.

Liverpool splashed out £32.5 million last summer to prise him away from Villa Park, but his sole season at Anfield was a disappointing one, yielding just nine goals and three assists in 29 league matches, with the striker falling out of favour under new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Benteke featured regularly for Belgium at every youth level from Under 17 to Under 21, totalling 23 goals in 37 matches, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in May 2010. An Achilles injury ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup, though he featured at Euro 2016 and currently has seven goals and three assists in 29 outings for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that Palace produced more crosses than any side in 2015/16, the acquisition of Benteke makes sense – since arriving in the Premier League, the Belgian has been amongst the top three forwards for successful headers in four consecutive seasons.

Pardew generally prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, so Benteke should enjoy service from the likes of Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha in the wide areas, while Yohan Cabaye and Jason Puncheon provide the creativity through the middle and from set-pieces.

Townsend has provided more key passes than any team-mate this term and with a natural finisher on board, his prospects of assists look to have taken a turn for the better. The summer signing from Newcastle has created a chance every 36 minutes this season.

Benteke has also shown his dead-ball capabilities, more so during his time with Villa, but with Cabaye also at Palace, it remains to be seen if he can wrestle those off the Frenchman.

Cabaye scored three of his four spot-kicks last term, but he did miss his last one, against Newcastle in April. So there’s perhaps a chance Benteke may be in line to take over penalty duties, which, as already seen this season, can prove so critical to a player’s appeal.

The major plus regarding Benteke’s Fantasy prospects are Palace’s fixtures over the coming month or so. Saturday’s favourable home clash against Bournemouth is followed by a four further kind match-ups (mid, STO, sun, eve), handing the forward the ideal platform to hit the ground running for his new team.

Given that Palace having failed to score in their opening two matches, the need for a quality addition in attack couldn’t have been more evident.

Connor Wickham only managed to score five league goals last season, and has been far from prolific during his time in the top flight. Benteke will surely come in as Pardew’s favoured frontman, with the only doubt perhaps over his minutes against Bournemouth due to a lack of pre-season action.

A price of 7.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) also looks attractive given his goal scoring record over the past four seasons, and with owners of Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic looking for value in the third forward slot, Benteke could fit the bill.

The Belgian’s ownership in FPL currently stands at just 2.4%, but if Palace play to his strengths, which they appear set up to do, there’s little doubt he could prove hugely successful.

While the likes of Alvaro Negredo, Andre Gray and Salomon Rondon have staked their claims for the cheap third forward spot in FPL, a player of Benteke’s calibre could prove hard to ignore should he thrive as the big fish in a small pond as he did during his time at Villa.

Was looking at getting Aguero in by doing:

    Vardy OUT Aguero IN
    Firmino OUT Lamela IN
    Drinkwater to a 4.5

But not enough to do that as left with 4.2 itb. Any other suggestions on the best option? 2 FT itb

    Foster, Pickford
    Terry, Stones, Shaw, McAuley, Mee
    Hazard, Drinkwater, Firmino, Deulofeu, Tadic
    Long, Ibrahimovic, Vardy.

    Foster (MID)
Valencia (hul), Stones (WHM), Williams (STO)
Hazard (BUR), Barkley (STO), Tadic (SUN), Redmond (SUN), Townsend (BOU)
    Aguero (WHM), Ibrahimovic (hul)

    Jankupovic, Walker, Amat, Diamonde

Thinking of going 3-5-2 on wildcard, thoughts on this team? There are a few potential 6.5m strikers and Benteke particularly that interest me which gives me some doubt. But there are way more midfielders that seem good value and for instance when an 8.5m mid hits form then its more flexible to switch my midfielders around based on form.

Townsend won't match Benteke but the 1m saved allows me to upgrade 2x 4.5m defenders to Stones and Williams. Capoue is a great pick so I have a back up plan in case one of the mid fails and I want a new striker. Diamonde might not be in the team long but he works well as an enabler.

Word of caution, you were also "feeling it" presumably when you picked Firmino and Carroll in the first place?! Benteke hasn't played a single minute and has presumably had fewer than three training sessions with his new team mates. Pogba looks great in real football terms, but yet to see how he'll perform in Fantasy football terms. I'd suggest waiting ...

agree with TTM and Spirit. Benteke has been out in the Liverpool cold, think he needs at least couple of games to fit into the Palace mould.

Personally felt Andy Carroll is poor choice, but that's just me.

        A non fantasy question:

I am attending a medical conference in Manchester and as part of social activities the organisers have offered a tour of Old Trafford @ 47 GBP (includes coach service from and to the conference venue). Anybody here have an experience of such a tour? Is it worth 47 GBP (thats significant money when converted to my local currency)?

The tour description says '...on arrival at Old Trafford you will go behind the scenes and see the stadium through the eyes of Manchester United greats themselves. From the dizzy heights of the Sir Alex Ferguson stand, to the atmosphere soaked players’ dressing room, to emerging from the players’ tunnel and following in the footsteps of so many players, you will visit the Museum ..'

        Any advice appreciated.

The Ben Gibson/Dani Ayala Partnership is back!

Fantasy footballers, are you ready for some Dani Ayala?!!

Late cameo coming on for Emilio N'Sue to shore things up against Sunderland and he looked as dominant as ever. It is expected that from Sunday he will come back in to centre back next to Ben Gibson, and Barragan, who has been really impressive at CB, will revert to RB at the expense of N'Sue.

For those of you not aware of the Ayala/Gibson CB partnership here at the stats for the past two years when they've played together (and this is not a typo!)

          Last Season:

          Played 28 Won 18 Drawn 10 Lost 0 (ZERO) Goals Against 12

          Last two season combined:

          Played 48 Won 29 Drawn 18 Lost 1(ONE) Goals Against 28

Thats 1 league game in 48 that Boro have lost when these two have played together. All our bad runs have been when one (usually Ayala) has been out injured. For context, the 1 defeat came at the back end of the 15/16 season in a must win game, that saw us send the keeper up for a last minute corner and Fulham put a winner into an empty net on the counterattack.

Good to have you back Dani!

Doesn't Bolasie improve his prospects?? Bolasie is not a goal scorer

These four are interesting prospects. Let's see where they go and how they settle...

          Bony
          Benteke
          Bolasie
          Kone

Yep but I assumed Kone would be playing either at Sunderland or preferably Everton. Getting a bit concerned that he is rotting

2 FTs and nowhere to use it really.. How does Firmino + Costa to Hazard + Benteke for free look?

I'd hate to lose Costa before BUR though. Maybe just Firmino out?

Hate it too.. But I get hazard at least! Other option is firm to Sterling/pogba/bolasie

Terrible - at least keep an FT (unless you are WC'ing after next GW)

People saying Firmino isn't in form is ridiculous after just 2 games people. I really don't get it?

I think you are all getting confused by what form actually is as opposed to not scoring points.

Maybe a better excuse for transferring Firmino out is that he hasn't scored you points over 2 gws rather than that he is in poor form, lol.

          There's a massive difference people. 🙂

No point to pick up on mistakes like that when the reasons are obvious?

Sorry but the reasons aren't that obvious.

Form is an excellent measure of future points prediction, and if people are willing to use such a small sample of 2 games to base form on, then Firmino's underlying stats in those two games suggest his 'form' is great and points should be predicted to come very soon.

              People also have unreasonable expectations.

It is extremely rare and unlikely that a player is going to score points every game or every second game when there's 22 other players on the field. This usually only occurs if a player is in 'good form' and is lucky enough for the end product to materialize from that good form.

This tells us that the best fpl bets are those players with strong underlying stats that have so far been unlucky with the end product rather than those players with poor underlying stats that have been lucky to produce returns.

Of course the quality of the player is also a factor as the better the player the more clinical they can be even with low stats, however that is an elite group that doesn't really factor here with the players being discussed.

Facts are Firmino has the quality to come good on what are very good early underlying stats, or in many people's opinion good form over 2 games.

            true that

mahrez has points and isn't in form

            tadic has none and is

If he's not playing as a striker, he rarely gets any points.

I have been looking at firmino stats. All looks good on first glance but if you dig a bit deeper you will notice many of his chances created weree where he laid it off to coutinho to take a 35 yard pot shot

Whilst I am frustrated he hasn't scored points the deeper stats don't necessarily show he will actually deliver more pts. More likely to carry on as he is for now

            I am considering selling

I have watched both their matches and IMO he has been quite poor. I just sold him yesterday knowing that of course he can score a brace @ next gw. He is just so good player.

I'm sure that I will buy him back at some point, maybe at GW6 🙂

              For me it was:
              A) Firmino (tot LEI che)
              against
              B) Barkley (STO sun MID)

I guess B will earn more points (bonus: prices)

          Tadic -> Redmond
          Kane -> Ibra
          Firmino -> Barkley

          -4

          Go or No go?

          Or leave Tadic?

Tadic has been unlucky and his stats indicate that he will score more than 2 or 3 pts the next gameweeks.

if you'd watched either saints match you'd know this was madness

            tadic will come good, stick

do just firm to barkley if you want to catch price changes, but beyond that keep
