Moving Target

A reported target of Alan Pardew’s from the beginning of this transfer window, Christian Benteke finally completed his move to Crystal Palace on Saturday, joining the Eagles for a club-record fee, reportedly in the region of £27 million.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Selhurst Park and, speaking to the club’s official website, Pardew hopes the Belgian can fill the void up front that has been evident since the former Newcastle manager arrived in January 2015:

“We lack goals and some firepower and I would think Christian’s arrival will enhance every player within the squad. There’s one thing that’s always impressed me about him, he gets the sort of goals you would expect, but now and then he just pulls a rabbit out of the hat with a goal.”

The History

Born in Kinshasa, Zaire, Benteke’s family immigrated to Liege, Belgium in 1993. His big break came in 2004, when at the age of 14, he linked up with the Standard Liege youth set-up.

Two year later, the striker moved to fellow Belgian side Genk, and it was there where he made his professional debut in February 2008. In 2007/08, he bagged two assists in seven league appearances but, having only featured in three league matches in the first half of the following season, he re-joined Standard Liege in January 2009.

Between 2009 and 2011, Benteke took in loan spells at K.V. Kortrijk and KV Mechelen and began to make his mark. The striker scored 22 goals and claimed 10 assists in 56 league appearances, and returned to Genk ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.

Benteke scored 16 goals and registered nine assists in 36 league matches that season and, in the summer of 2012, Aston Villa swooped to sign the forward for a fee of around £7 million.

He instantly made an impression in the Premier League, scoring 19 goals and setting up four in 34 outings in his maiden campaign, and over the following two seasons he notched a further 23 goals and four assists in 55 Premier League appearances for a struggling midlands outfit.

Liverpool splashed out £32.5 million last summer to prise him away from Villa Park, but his sole season at Anfield was a disappointing one, yielding just nine goals and three assists in 29 league matches, with the striker falling out of favour under new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Benteke featured regularly for Belgium at every youth level from Under 17 to Under 21, totalling 23 goals in 37 matches, before making his senior debut against Bulgaria in May 2010. An Achilles injury ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup, though he featured at Euro 2016 and currently has seven goals and three assists in 29 outings for his country.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind that Palace produced more crosses than any side in 2015/16, the acquisition of Benteke makes sense – since arriving in the Premier League, the Belgian has been amongst the top three forwards for successful headers in four consecutive seasons.

Pardew generally prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, so Benteke should enjoy service from the likes of Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha in the wide areas, while Yohan Cabaye and Jason Puncheon provide the creativity through the middle and from set-pieces.

Townsend has provided more key passes than any team-mate this term and with a natural finisher on board, his prospects of assists look to have taken a turn for the better. The summer signing from Newcastle has created a chance every 36 minutes this season.

Benteke has also shown his dead-ball capabilities, more so during his time with Villa, but with Cabaye also at Palace, it remains to be seen if he can wrestle those off the Frenchman.

Cabaye scored three of his four spot-kicks last term, but he did miss his last one, against Newcastle in April. So there’s perhaps a chance Benteke may be in line to take over penalty duties, which, as already seen this season, can prove so critical to a player’s appeal.

The major plus regarding Benteke’s Fantasy prospects are Palace’s fixtures over the coming month or so. Saturday’s favourable home clash against Bournemouth is followed by a four further kind match-ups (mid, STO, sun, eve), handing the forward the ideal platform to hit the ground running for his new team.

Given that Palace having failed to score in their opening two matches, the need for a quality addition in attack couldn’t have been more evident.

Connor Wickham only managed to score five league goals last season, and has been far from prolific during his time in the top flight. Benteke will surely come in as Pardew’s favoured frontman, with the only doubt perhaps over his minutes against Bournemouth due to a lack of pre-season action.

A price of 7.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) also looks attractive given his goal scoring record over the past four seasons, and with owners of Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic looking for value in the third forward slot, Benteke could fit the bill.

The Belgian’s ownership in FPL currently stands at just 2.4%, but if Palace play to his strengths, which they appear set up to do, there’s little doubt he could prove hugely successful.

While the likes of Alvaro Negredo, Andre Gray and Salomon Rondon have staked their claims for the cheap third forward spot in FPL, a player of Benteke’s calibre could prove hard to ignore should he thrive as the big fish in a small pond as he did during his time at Villa.

I love KDB, the player, but also his FPL appeal. Problem is that it is very difficult to fund 10.5 for him considering Aguero is a must have. Hazard at 10 with set pieces is currently more appealing but KDB will definitely still deliver.

Also, Hazard is 100% nailed. KDB might be rotated a bit considering the MCI calendar this season with CL duties and MCI bench offers A LOT of options now with Gundoga, Sané, Nolito, Sterling, Silva, Yaya, Delph etc..

Still bothering me not to have him but the Return on Investment ratio for KDB is currently outshined by Hazard imo

Why are there so many bitter Firmino owners on here today worried about the price drop and trying hard to convince others to hold ?

Surely you should just be grateful for those selling him and causing the price drop so when he scores all these fantastic points you are predicting this weekend it will be a massive differential for you and shoot you up the rankings. Simples.

Who said anyone's bitter? You're making a fairly general accusation that all his owners care about price fluctuations.

As an owner I couldn't care less if he drops 0.5mil. At this stage of the season it really doesn't matter.

I personally have been questioning the sellers reasoning for selling because it for the most part has been wildly inaccurate and at some points simply false.

This isn't fair to other people who read this reasoning and then think they have to panic transfer because of false hype based on inaccurate information.

I just like to tell it as it is and let others decide what to do based on accurate info at least. Whether they then buy or sell I really couldn't care less. 😉

I'm actually selling him BECAUSE he's dropping in price.

I wouldn't mind holding for Spurs, and think there's a chance he could do well.

Just really, really fancy Ozil (who wouldn't 🙂 )

        1. devils advocate
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 7 months ago

          And that's fair enough.

It's a better reason for selling than these fools who are trying to justify it by saying he is out of form after just 2 gws, lol.

I respect your honesty at the very least. 😉

            *civil hi 5* 🙂

I've got some very delicate plans for my team up until I WC in gw7, and my strategy this season was always to follow the markets to maximise the WC. Obviously, will probably get stung by a few players I sell down to this, but hopefully on the whole I'll come out with a small advantage.

I've sold and would encourage others to do so - Barkley fixtures much better and potentially will rise 0.1m means alot at this stage of the season

      1. devils advocate
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

You think a 0.1mil rise at this stage of the game means a lot? Lol.

        Can you explain why?

I get that you would prefer Barkley because of fixtures, but the rest of your reasoning makes no sense sorry.

If that's how you play the game you're going to have fun jumping on every player who rises 0.1mil each gw after a good score, lol. Even though you need a minimum 0.2mil rise to see any benefit regarding profit.

Sorry but this is another poorly thought out reason to sell as 0.1mil movements mean little this early in the game as another player could easily be the next bandwagon after this gw and then what? You have to get them in as well?

There's no logic to this. 🙂

Looks like 4-3-3 is the formation to go with this season:

As Aguero and Ibra look a must in front.

    Current team

    De Gea

    Stones Shaw Morgan

    Hazard Firmino Pogba Redmond

    Llorente Aguero Negredo

    1ITB

    a) Who to transfer out?
    b) Or Save

I would like to add another full back, for more attacking threat. So im looking at Morgan. Will bring Ibra in with my wildcard gameweek 4.

not too bothered by price rises - considered Barkley...but I've been there too many times!

        Current front 8 is

        Hazard Lamela Firmino Redmond Capoue
        Ibra Gray Kun

Barkley has a great run but he's so frustrating to own. Tadic has some good immediate fixtures and he was very impressive against United imo. Passes the eye test comfortably.

that's exactly why I'm ditching Firmino - too many shared points.

I intended to but I've gone early, largely as a result of Ibra surgery; I would've needed a double hit to get him now and waiting = multiple price-rises.

    Pick 1 to transfer in:

    A - Ibe
    B - Townsend
    C - Ox
    D - Matt Phillips.

probably B as Benteke joining might give a bit more of offensive appeal to CRY

Hoping Benteke stays at 7.4m til after this GW deadline. Then very tempted to do Gray to Benteke (only have 0.9m itb)

        Pondering it too.

Risk is Gray at home to Hull in GW4 and Benteke starting slowly. Palace are on a horrendous run of form too since Jan.

Season wise I def want Benteke but would feel pretty stupid if Gray hits double digits again v Hull and I've takena -4 to get Benteke in for some more Palace blanks. As much faith as I have in benteke I don't like the idea of being too dependent on Pards.

Yeah looked good when he came on at weekend. Big money signing so reckon he will go into the team this week and is good value at 6.0.

Yeh he's great value at 6.0. I really wanted to do Ibra/Bolasie in for Kane/Deo but had to settle for Snodgrass because Ibra up at 11.6 🙁

What would be people's opinion on Gray to Benteke for -4.

At the moment I am leaning towards no as I don't want to take the hit and Gray has 2 good home fixtures out of next 4 games. Also Benteke might not hit the ground running as he hasn't played in pre-season.

On the other hand Benteke is a player I have total faith in and would definitely have him if he'd been at Palace from the start of the season and Palace have such good fixtures. Will be watching his performance in League Cup tonight closely.

Thats a pathetic move at the given moment considering how great Grays form has been not only this season but even last

Wouldn't say its pathetic. Benteke is proven goal scorer in Pl year on year and is playing with a better team who have excellent fixtures.

Gray has done well in Championship and now has 12 points over 2 games in PL . But Burnley were v lucky to score 2 goals from 2 shot son target this weekend so for me this is definitely a very close call.

I think it's a probably a good move long term, but definitely wouldn't take a hit for it. There's no guarantee he'll even start this weekend, let alone be in form.
