Suspensions and late transfer window deals left many of our community’s best-laid plans in tatters.

Our hot topic posters sift through the cinders of a fiery transfer deadline day and the knock-on effect on wildcards wielded over the international break.

Meanwhile, our community articles look back at a disastrous set of predictions for the Scouts last weekend. Our Members tables focus on attacking defenders and midfield maestros and we also take a look at those best placed to cope with evolving team sheets at the top of our community competitions.

The Community Articles

Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s lack of goals last weekend meant our Scout predictions were less than successful during Gameweek 3, according to Andy85wsm’s latest look at our crystal ball gazing skills.

One of our Spot the Differentials of the near future is likely to be Stoke’s new loan signing Wilfried Bony, who has joined from Manchester City. Zlatan Time, is among our community writers who thinks Stoke boss Mark Hughes has done very well to nab the former Swansea star.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Transfer deadline day proved an eventful one for the community, with rotation and relegation looming large over some teams. Our hot topic the day after the deadline closed looked at the impact of the new arrivals and departures on our plans.

The search for cheap goalkeepers was among the key issues, with Hull’s successful recruitment of David Marshall seemingly sounding the death knell for Eldin Jakupovic’s time as a budget option between the sticks.

Meanwhile, as King Nidge points out, Sunderland’s failure to transfer in Boavista shot stopper Mika Domingues means that our hopes hang on Jordan Pickford in the sub-4.5 keeper bracket. It is worth noting that the Wearsiders are looking for special dispensation to sign another stopper, whilst Pickford withdrew from England Under 21 duties with a thigh problem in midweek.

Everton had mixed fortunes in the transfer window, missing out to Spurs for the signature of Moussa Sissoko, but securing West Ham forward Enner Valencia on loan. Tim Howard’s Beard was on hand to assess the Toffees’ prospects post transfer window.

He also took a look at how Chelsea may line up, following the London side’s recruitment of their former defender David Luiz from Paris Saint Germain, as well as left back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. Staying with Chelsea, RoysCallerAnne pondered why it is that the Fantasy Premier League bonus point system has such a dislike of their striker Diego Costa.

Another intriguing transfer this week was Manchester City’s Wilfried Bony to Stoke on loan. Andy85wsm takes a look at his chances of success in comparison with another similarly priced striker, Christian Benteke, who swapped Liverpool for Crystal Palace this summer.

Meanwhile, In Like Flynn is less than impressed with some of the high prices clubs are paying for average squad players who may struggle to even secure a regular first XI spot.

Sergio Aguero’s three-match ban, handed out this week after his altercation with Winston Reid last weekend, has also altered many best laid plans. We asked who is wildcarding this week to cope with his loss, while Triggerlips looked at the best time to bring the Argentine striker back in.

Among key targets for wildcarders are West Ham players, who are embarking on a favourable run as Jay’s analysis showed.

Arsenal players are also high on many of the community’s watchlists. But, asked S Kuqi, which of Alexis Sanchez or Mesut Ozil represents the best use of our money? For Carpe Diem, Sanchez looks a great option, particularly as the Chilean seems to be unaffected by fatigue when returning from international duty.

With considerable transfer activity anticipated as the international break marches on, Sinik sparked a discussion on the thresholds for price changes. Among those to see their price rocket is Watford midfielder Etienne Capoue. FPLVirgin popped by today to ask whether the budget pick has earned a starting XI berth after his two goals so far this term.

Finally, Diva urged community members to look beyond overall rank history when receiving advice.

The Members Tables

Manchester City’s midfield talent come under scrutiny in Ziro’s latest table. He also spent this week looking over Liverpool’s attacking options. Meanwhile attacking defenders were the subject of Andy85wsm’s most recent table, as well this statistical construction by Flashmule.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing the safety score was 34, which saw 157 managers depart and 2,900 remain.

Cak Juris is the new leader of Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season mini-league. This is his fifth season and he’s never finished outside the top 11,000.

The Irish Contingent competition, which is organised by HVT, is led by Godot, closely followed in second place by RoysCallerAnne.

Facer retains top spot in the FFS Moderator and Contributors league going into Gameweek 4, closely followed by Evs.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Just read the hot topic on Cech, and I wanted to make a case for a certain 4.5 - but it's probably not who you think.

Although WBA is solid at the back, providing Foster with good CS prospects, there's someone else in that same price bracket that catches my eye even more. When Cech was compared to a select 4.5 GK in the HT, the original poster chose to compare him to Foster (naturally, as he's the most popular 4.5 GK), stating that there really wasn't much difference regarding saves between the expensive and reliable Cech and the cheaper 4.5 GKs. But as Cech and Foster has made 10 and 11 saves respectively, my man has made at least 1/3 more than that, and he's even racked up a clean sheet and 3BP for a 10-point-haul along the way.

I'm talking about Tom Heaton. Somewhat popular as a rotating partner for Foster, he's now being dropped/overlooked/ignored in favour of a Foster/4.0-combo. But I wanna ask why that combo is more popular than a Heaton/4.0-combo?

Is it because we all view Burnley as a rubbish promoted team that will go back down straight away just like they did last time? Well, maybe they will. But the last time they did just that, Heaton racked up an impressive total of 150 points along the way, including 10 CS, 127 saves, 2 penalty saves and 11 bonus points. And remember, this was even before the BPS change for GKs that boosted their chances for bonus points via multiple saves (if someone has a lot of time on their hands, I would love to see a re-calculation of Heaton's points in 14/15 using this year's bonus system.. :D). Heaton has already started just where he left off last time around, with 1 CS, 18(!) saves and 3 bonus points for a total of 17 points in three games - 1 point behind Foster who has kept 2 CS.

But what about those tricky away games against top sides? Surely you don't wanna play Heaton in those matches? Well, to a certain extent; you won't get a Burnley CS at the Etihad or at Anfield. But what you will get is tons of saves, and should he be faced with penalties, he's more than capable to save them. For example, Burnley was trashed 3-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend. A 3-0-loss, a disaster for your GK, right? Well not really. Heaton still managed to get 3 points through six saves, losing out to the CS-keeping Foster by only 3 points. Do you want to pay .5 for a rotating GK for that sporadic 3 point gain and risk of benching your 10 point hauls and penalty saves?

I realize this post entered tl;dr land a long time ago, but one last point I'd like to make is that Foster is injury prone and neither Jakupovic nor Pickford looks long term playing prospects, leaving you with little cover if you go down the Foster/4.0-route. The thing with Heaton/4.0 is that you can pick the Burnley back-up-GK (looks to be Robinson) as your 4.0 and have cover in case Heaton (never injured, see below) gets injured.

    Foster injury record: http://www.transfermarkt.com/ben-foster/verletzungen/spieler/13572
    Heaton injury record: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-heaton/verletzungen/spieler/34130

Good luck to everyone trying to pick the right GK combo on their wildcards, and may the Heatster be with you.. 😉

I totally get that. But even with 2 CS in three compared to 1 CS in three, Heaton is still almost at par due to all his save points.. 🙂

And don't you fear for Foster's fitness given he's missed 44 games over the last two seasons?

Yes I'm pretty sure that Heaton is a great shout too, wouldn't mind having him.

As long as Foster won't get an injury I think he will keep playing every game. Goalkeeper is not the most demanding position 😉

Although I do agree the WBA defence probably is slightly more solid, I really think you're underrating the Burnley defence. As I wrote, they did keep 10 clean sheets the last time they were up (despite being relegated) - just as many as WBA kept last season.

However GKs and defenders are all individuals, and although I like Heaton more so than Foster, I think there's better value in WBA for the 4.5 defender bracket than there is at Burnley - mainly due to more goal threat.

That's exactly my thinking so I have Heaton plus cheap (Jaku) from the beginning and not changing it during WC. I also have WBA defender in Evans who may take the baps. None of Burnley defenders won't take Heaton's baps.

And I don't like rotation cause I often pick wrong

Exactly. People are obsessed with coverage, but we have to look at who's the best individual pick from each defence aswell. Heaton's by far the number one pick at Burnley (Keane could challenge him if he scores regularly like last season), whereas WBA defenders are all up there for BPS and goals (more BPS).

I currently have McAuley myself, might shift for Evans if I need the .1, and I really like Heaton/WBA-def-combo myself.

All valid points, and a very good post. Cheers on that.

I have Foster atm because not only does he play for Pulis, he has a lot of ownership at the moment too. Maybe down the line Heaton would become an option for me when we know teams a lot more and the less-interested crowd goes away, but until then, Foster is in my team as he keeps raking in those points and increases in value.

Agree he is a good pick but, Liverpool was a bit of a one of IMO, Liverpool should definatly have scored.

Heaton isn't as good for bonus as Cech, in a full season Heaton got 11 bonus and Cech got 15 last season.

Heaton got 127 saves, Cech and Cech in 300 less minutes got 101 so let's say that is an extra 10 points in Heatons favour.

Arsenal clean sheets last year 18 (I made a mistake in my HT by looking at Cechs CS who missed games rather than Arsenals)
Burnleys clean sheets last time were 10.

So Heaton may have a slight advantage if any at all for bonus and a a 10 or so more points for saves Cech will get 8 more clean sheets than him at the least which is an awful lot more points.

Not to mention burnley were more defensively solid the last time they were promoted and Arsenal are more defensively solid this year than last (IMO).

Now I think Heaton is more capable of 3 bonus than Cech but Cech consistently gets 1 or 2 bonus and that's why he gets more.

      1. Bibelnissen
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 11 Years

Yeah, but there was a change in the BPS scoring for keepers before the 15/16 season, doubling the amount of BPS for each save, hence making it 'easier' for Cech to get BP last season than Heaton the season before. I do believe Heaton got the most BP in 14/15, but 6 out of 11 came from the two penalty saves. Gaining bonus points without penalty saves for GKs post 15/16 was almost impossible. If they kept the same BPS scoring in 15/16 as was used in 14/15, then Cech wouldn't have been near 15 BP.

If we do say that Arsenal will get 8 more CS than Burnley, that equals 8*4p = 32p. Then subtract 3p (at least) for Heaton's saves, and we're at 29. That means you're paying 1m for 0,75 points per week, or 3 points every four weeks. Heaton also has a better penalty career record than Cech, and Burnley are likely to face more penalties than Arsenal over the season, so we could possibly add 5-10 points in favour of Heaton there aswell. Now I really think you can get more out of that 1m if you put it into midfield or attack.

I think the main difference between WBA and Burnley is that nobody would pick a 4.5 Burnley defender ahead of Evans, McAuley or Galloway.

And that explains (at least to me it does) why I need to keep Foster.

Someone did an analysis of the effect of the BPS changes on bonus points, and this showed that Heaton would have got 16 bonus points instead of 11 if 2014-15 had been under the new system.

Pantilimon's bonus points, however, would have increased from 7 to 17!
The 3rd best goalkeeper in 2014-15 for bonus points would have been Fabianski (up from 9 to 14).

Hart, Walker, Cahill, Stones, Rose, Dier, Henderson, Lallana, Rooney, Sterling, Kane.

Walker, Cahill, Henderson, Lallana, Rooney 😆

Ah well, at least Sterling and Kane play.

Wilshere does really well for England more often than not. Certainly brings more balance to the midfield than Henderson and Rooney.

Agree with this.. lovely left foot and technically on another level to the others when he's on form.. Barkley over Sterling for me and the sooner we accept that Rashford should walk on to that side the better

Beginning to warm to Wilshere in an England shirt, I don't think he's ever disappointed. Not that I remember anyway.

Good shout on Barkley, decent player like. Think Sterling has better form.

Totally forgot about Rashford, his time will come for sure. For now, Kane/Sturridge/Vardy should be fine.

    Which would you prefer;

    Aguero + Tadic > Costa + Antonio
    or
    Aguero + Feghouli (5th) > Costa + Antonio

Oh, I have hated and will hate that bad stuff, always.

And it's not because of the bad boy stuff in general, it's because of what kind of bad boy stuff it was. That he was such a whiny cheat, and then played dirty. I can't take that combination: whining and playing dirty. I can accept that a player plays rough, I even like it, and even dirty can well be acceptable, but then the player should be fair and open about his rough play and definitely not go cry to ref himself all the time, particularly not when nothing has been done to him.

I can't stand it when a player plays dirty AND play acts and whines. I support much easier the antics of somebody like Joey Barton or Eric Cantona. It's dicky, it's dirty, it's violent, it's impulsive, but it's also sort of fair play. So, fair enough.

There's really no competition for Messi as the best (attacking) player. No matter how much goals Suarez or anybody scores. Messi is the only player who truly looks like he's from a different planet than everybody else.
