Diego Costa scores twice as Eden Hazard bring home a one-point return. Leroy Fer strengthens his claim as a budget midfielder, whilst Stephen Kingsley seems to have convinced Francesco Guidolin he’s a worthy starter. Here’s the Stock Check following today’s events..

On the Rise

Diego Costa
Whilst Eden Hazard offered us nothing more than a yellow card, Costa maintained his momentum under Antonio Conte by netting both of the Blues’ goals at the Liberty.

Over 362,000 FPL managers turned to Costa as a result of Sergio Aguero’s suspension last week and today’s display means is the only forward to score or assist in all four Gameweeks.

Conte has failed to curb the Spain international’s penchant for falling foul of referees, though – this afternoon’s caution was his third of the season, continuing a run that has seen him booked in every league match that he has scored in this term.

Leroy Fer
Along with Etienne Capoue, the Swansea midfielder continues to bely his budget price tag, with this afternoon’s goal a third in the first four Gameweeks.

Granted, the upcoming fixtures continue to look dire but having scored against Leicester and Chelsea in back-to-back fixtures, Fer seems to have the form to prevail.

Capoue’s cheaper price (4.7 to the Dutchman’s 5.2) and kind set of fixtures from Gameweek 6 suggests he’s likely to remain the favoured fifth midfielder.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Without a goal or assist in the first three Gameweeks, the Swansea playmaker had dropped to 7.3 ahead of Chelsea’s visit.

Sigurdsson’s spot-kick duties came to the rescue, though, and with a couple of bonus points also in the bag, his season now looks up and running.

Fer may currently be the form option, yet Siggurdsson is established Fantasy royalty and could be one to consider when the fixtures start to improve in Gameweek 9.

Stephen Kingsley
The Scot was expected to drop to the bench to accommodate Neil Taylor’s return but instead retained a role in the first XI thanks to a change in tactics by Francesco Guidolin.

The Swansea manager’s decision to begin with a 3-5-1-1 allowed Kingsley to start for the fourth successive Gameweek, stationed alongside Jordi Amat and Federico Fernandez in a back three, with Taylor utilised as a left wing-back.

Guidolin’s first-half decision to haul off Taylor and bring on Mo Barrow suggests Kingsley may well be ahead in the pecking order.

Regardless, with Southampton, City, Liverpool and Arsenal next, he looks set for a spot on our FPL benches for now.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
Okay, it was his first blank of the season.

Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that if Hazard had delivered yet again today, the bandwagon would have kicked into overdrive.

Although a rare off day will certainly be forgiven by his owners, some would-be suitors may now think twice over bringing in the Belgian right now.

With the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Michail Antonio all bagging double-figure hauls ahead of some great fixtures, Chelsea’s schedule – which sees them face Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester and Man United in the next five Gameweeks – could prove enough of a short-term deterrent.

The Chelsea Defence
Antonio Conte handed new boys David Luiz and Marcos Alonso a place amongst the substitutes, opting instead to keep faith in the defence that produced a clean sheet against Burnley in the previous Gameweek.

Branislav Ivanovic may have collected an assist for Costa’s acrobatic leveler yet the nature of Chelsea’s capitulation indicates their backline is very much a work in progress right now.

Given the aforementioned fixtures, Conte will be desperate to address his rearguard’s shortcomings. With John Terry doubtful for Liverpool’s visit with an ankle problem, the Italian may well consider a reshuffle against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form attack.

Neil Taylor
Hauled off just 40 minutes into his first appearance of the season, the left-back looked none too happy with his manager’s decision as Swansea reverted to a back-four.

Post-match, Guidolin apologised, conceding he should have replaced the Wales international at the break, though the bottom line is that Taylor now seems to have fallen behind the cut-price Kingsley as the Italian’s preferred left-back for now.

To say this gameweek has been a disappointment is an understatement.......
34 points with only Lukaku and Williams left to play. Wish I havent used my wildcard...Should I stick to my plan of saving 2FT for Aguero at Gw6 or ring the changes now? Hugely disappointed with Sterling Ozil blanking and Hazard(c) giving me a 2 point return...... Very tempted to swap Ozil for Firmino or Mane. Thoughts????

    Team: Foster/Pickford
    Williams Collins Valencia McAuley Amat
    hazard Sterling Ozil Antonio Capoue
    Benteke Ibra Lukaku

despite WCing, putting c on sanchez and vc on hazard and somehow coming out of the WC with 3.8 itb ive had a good gw. fought the urge to put payet in for antonio, all because of form.

planned change is Walker for a 4.5m watford df who isnt playing.

worth it, or should i leave a ft for aguero nw?

Thanks for the replies. I will give Ozil another shot. Another huge headache is that I have already used my AOA chip and I really dread the idea of leaving Capoue(and 13 points) on the bench again. Which of these front 7 do you think I should take out of this team to put in Capoue?

Considering a double up on Liverpool midfield as their fixtures ease. But concerned that while they can put 4 past Arsenal and Leicester, they may struggle to be so prolific against HUL, swa, WBA, cpl.

    Thoughts?

Tend to agree. The high press works best against teams who attack rather than teams who sit back. They need to find a way to beat the lesser teams consistently if they're ever going to push for the title or even top 4

I think liverpool will rip through a few teams this year.

They look better than last year.

Burnley game means we should be cautious but im not inferring too much from one game. Id love to double up though there are a lot of alternatives in the price range so not sure i will in the end

Yes. Dortmund struggled in Klopp's last season simply because the other teams refused to attack so the pressing didn't work. He had no plan B then, hopefully he has one now.

At least Coutinho likes a long shot, that's helpful against the ultra defensive sides who just crowd their third.

I would just like to point out some conversation about if one owned both Hazard and Costa that it would be 'foolish' or 'terrible captain choice' going with Costa and not Hazard.

The reason given? Baps. And people expect Costa to be ejected from any match.

    Capoue is the new Mahrez.

If he cost 6 or 7+ he'd be a nailed starter in everyone's team each week regardless of fixtures. But because we all got him as bench fodder it "feels" right to bench him each week in favour of your more expensive assets.

    Play Capoue every week people

Mahrez's first four matches last season vs. Capoue's first four this season:

          - Penalty area touches: 21 to 11

The current Fantasy Team of the Year is:

    Foster
    Walker Smith McAuley
    Capoue Antonio Cazorla Fer Hazard
    Ibrahimovic Costa

Total cost as of today: 76 clams

But when it comes to Arsenal only get Ozil/Sanchez. For WHM only get Payet. Don't get Costa due to yellows. Ibra is too new to PL, don't get him. Foster & McAuley - you can' possibly double on WBA defense.

Anyone with a worse score than 15pts? Still got Lukaku, Barkley and Williams - surely that's worth 35 pts between them? 🙁

18-4 with lukaku, barkley and kone. Might have a slim chance if one of those does something?

If you think Kone is a 1 or 2 then a decent score from one of the others will help.

Surely Sturridge is the best player on that team when fit, Firmino isn't losing his place in any Klopp team, and Mane looks nailed with his form and the outlay to get him. That would mean they have to change formation to 4-2-3-1 for Coutinho. Could happen, probably will, but don't always want to fix something that isn't broken.

Unless they follow standard protocol and sub Sturridge before he falls apart and then give Coutinho a run against a tired and slow Chelsea defense. He's welcome to hit a hat-trick too please.

IMHO you can't ignore it any longer. I'm livid with myself for thinking it would stop, I even got rid of him pre-WC 🙁

Form over Fixtures. This week against United will be THE acid test for Watford. If United defend like they did against City then I can see Watford getting the bacon.

Set to save transfer this Gw:
    Heaton
    Baines, Walker, Valencia
    Antonio, Firmino, Hazard, Ozil
    Defoe, Benteke (c), Vardy
    Subs: Pickford, Mcauley, Amat, Maloney

Does the bench and captain choice look good.
Vardy is another captain option. But Heaton in goal sways that thinking

I know I'm blaming myself. Just thinking out loud that I should have listened to him.

Thinking back there was absolutely 0 upside of playing Redmond away at the Emirates, although he was unlucky not to have the assist from the Tadic FK.

Yea I was really hesitating playing Redmond and I was banging on during the break about Southampton system just not working.

But I guess I just decided that his potential OOP was worth giving a chance. Meh. Blame myself too - ignored gut.

Bro tbh I think it's his price who throws us off.

            4.5, I just always bench the 4.5 ....

Even next week I'm benching him and he will somehow find a way to score vs United. lol

Wowzers. I have had Firmino from GW1 and looks a keeper until injured for me. Just way too explosive.

Pretty cheap for a guy who can easily get 10+ every game,

Plus Klopp loves him and he always plays 90mins.

I was sucked into chasing value. Really stupid on hindsight.

Was also disappointed with the first 2 GWs.

Am wildcarding next week and likely getting him back. Just gutted - was at 13k last week and 2 simple decisions could have made this week so sweet (keeping Firmino and playing capoue over Redmond)
