The Gameweek 5 captain poll, canvassing your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 5, is now live.

You can find the poll in the middle column of the homepage or at the bottom of the homepage on mobile. Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

Alexis Sanchez (11.0) and Eden Hazard (10.3), the two most popular candidates to replace suspended captaincy stalwart Sergio Aguero, failed their audition spectacularly in Gameweek 4.

The 13.9% owned Sanchez was rested for the Southampton tie ahead of Arsenal’s midweek Champions League game with Paris Saint Germain and brought in just one Fantasy Premier League point from a brief appearance off the bench. Meanwhile, Gameweek 4 poll leader Eden Hazard, who sits in 34.9% of FPL teams, failed to pick up any attacking points for the first time this season, away to Swansea. The Chelsea man also only managed a single FPL point after receiving a yellow card.

Nevertheless, both could reward those who keep the faith. Hazard takes on Liverpool in the Friday evening kick off and already has two goals at Stamford Bridge this term and has fired in 10 goal attempts on home soil, compared to six away. Liverpool, it is worth noting, have failed to register a clean sheet so far this season.

An away trip to Hull City could also ensure Sanchez follows up his Gameweek 4 disappointment with a positive haul. The Chilean scored and registered two assists away to Watford in Gameweek 3.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea also offer alternative options. With a brace against Swansea, Diego Costa (9.8) is now the only forward to bring in attacking points in every fixture so far. He certainly has form on his side ahead of Friday night’s game and is now part of 21.7% of FPL teams.

Santi Cazorla (7.6), who is on penalties and has been drafted in by more than 26,000 FPL managers so far this week, could be another popular selection. His second penalty of the season, against Southampton, takes him to fourth in FPL’s overall points table. Mesut Ozil (9.6) is another candidate. Despite failing to deliver attacking returns in Gameweek 4, he was Arsenal’s most creative player that match and scored during the Gunners’ last away trip in Gameweek 3 at Vicarage Road.

Midfield captaincy options are in abundance amongst Manchester City and Liverpool’s ranks.

Robert Firmino (8.4) and Sadio Mane (8.9) brought in three goals, an assist and five bonus points between them in their humbling of Leicester at Anfield in Gameweek 4.

Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) took centre stage for Manchester City with a goal and assist in the win at Old Trafford. The surprising differential, who has an ownership of just 6.1%, looks a prime candidate for the armband when City host Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 14% of FPL managers who own Raheem Sterling will also be considering the 8.2 priced England winger, despite his lowly one point return in the Manchester derby at the weekend. That was his only match without a goal or assist all season and his last home game, against West Ham in Gameweek 2, saw him bring in 15 points via a brace of goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.8) may well offer the most reliable source of captaincy points, away to a Watford side that has conceded eight goals and fail to register a shut-out this campaign. No player has generated more goal attempts than the Manchester United striker this season, who with a 63% ownership is FPL’s most popular player by a clear distance.

A final name worth mentioning is something of a forgotten man in previous captain polls, however, with his first goal of the season, against Stoke in Gameweek 4, Harry Kane (10.9) could be on the verge of a prosperous run of form.

Not only has he a favourable tie, at home to Sunderland, but Spurs look set to welcome back their influential midfielder Moussa Dembele, who as the theory goes, helps get the best out of the England centre forward. Should Kane score again this weekend it surely won’t be long before his 14.3 FPL ownership rockets.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Ozil has 2 more gameweeks. Or he's becoming Mane and doubling up with firmino

I did this before the price rise. Lamela has a good fixture this week but just going to constantly question whether he is going to play and cameos are becoming annoying when you have capoue as first sub!

I took a -4 to drop Stuani for Zaza which ended up costing me 5 points. I dont care when this happens as I did it and will live with it. Stun will be dropped soon enough as well IMO.

    Heaton

    Walker Baines McAuley (PVA Kingsley)

    Cazorla Antonio Firmino Redmond (Capoue)

    Lukaku Ibra Iheanacho

    5.5m ITB.

    Good to go?

    Is the midfield strong enough?

Very aware i'm missing Sanchez, Hazard, KDB......

    Cheers folks!

Best one week punt for this team before I mash the wildcard button?

    Foster, Jak
    Shaw, Evans, Friend, Amat, Kingsley
    Hazard, Tadic, Lamela, Redmond, Capoue
    Costa, Ibra, Lukaku

    3.5 ITB

Thinking either Redmond to Ozil or Lamela to Silva / KDB (assuming he looks likely to play.) Another cheeky idea is Bellerin in for Kingsley. Any thoughts?

    When Kun back:

    Foster, Jaku/Pick
    Valencia, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, Amat
    Hazard, Firmino, Cazorla, Snodgrass, Capoue
    Ibra, Aguero, Benteke

    Snod and Capoo to rotate

    Good plan?

almost identical to what i've got except antonio instead of Caz, lets you put a bit more into defence- i.e Baines instead of one of those 4.5s

    Hi! Worth WCing next week?

    Heaton | Foster
    Valencia | McAuley | Friend | Stones | Pieters
    Özil | Hazard | Lamela | Barkley | Redmond
    Lukaku | Vardy | Gray

And if so what to do with FT. 1.3 ITB

    bottomed

Is it worth using capoue as an enabler and downgrading Redmond to spend a bit of extra cash elsewhere? (4m in the bank to switch lukaku back to Aguero next week)

    Foster, Heaton
    Valencia, Williams, Morgan, Friend, Amat
    Hazard, Firmino, Antonio, Redmond, Capoue
    Ibra, Lukaku, Gray

Yes, Capoue might very well be a good enabler. Toying with the idea of 3-5-2 with Kun/Ibra/Capoue

Dont like Fer or Redmond. Snodgrass better option in 2. KDB still plays too deep and Aguero is enough for me. So 2 with Snod

Sanchez & Sterling owners (me included) - I think the worst is still to come 😕

With both rested for CL, and easy'ish fixtures next GW, if they both play a full 90mins (which I reckon they will), I think they'll be on for more limited minutes at the weekend.

Sterling especially, cause he's a bit wet at the best of times.

So I need a 6.3m Midfielder so I have enough in the bank to upgrade Kane > Aguero next week, any thoughts who? Rest of team is:

    Foster | Jakupovic
    Shaw | Stones | Williams | Amat | Love
    Sánchez | Mane | ????? | Fer | Capoue
    Ibrahimovic | Kane | Benteke

I'm currently on Redmond but not convinced, I know there aren't too many options at that price when I already have Fer & Capoue. Wilshere maybe? Thought about Iwobi, but will he get enough minutes. Shaqiri would be a great option imo but is 0.1m too much.

    1. Worzel Gummidge
      9 years, 11 months ago

I think he will do really well in that team with Payet and Lanzini pulling the strings but I may be biased as I have him. Fixtures up to GW12 are excellent. I have Antonio and Zaza.

Ahhh nice. Yeah the thing is I wanted West Ham, Liverpool, Arsenal attack + Hazard. The only way to do it was to get a striker from one of the 3 teams, and Zaza seemed the only viable option. Meant I missed out on Antonio.

Not sure what to do now, but obviously will wait and see for a couple weeks

Yeah I think that will come into play tonight, even if he just plays for a draw.....so 0-0 would work for you.

Well if it's Defoe, then that also might work, but he'll need to pick up full bappage......and Baines might still need an assist.

Need 12pts from Baines & Defoe.....

At least they're on the same side and don't automatically cancel out the other if they do something.

Not fun having attacker vs defender when you need a few points....

Yes..they do. Went with an attacking backline - Valencia, Baines, PVA and Masuaku with Cech in the goal. Unfortunately Cech had an own goal and Masuaka Valencia combo has given me a total of 1 point till now. Just hope its not 1-1 tonight with none of those three scoring.

    Foster
    Shaw-McAuley-Stones
    Hazard-Sanchez-Eriksen-Firmino
    Zlatan-Defoe-Gray
    Jakup-Hojbjerg-Amat-Friend

Is Capoue & Fer, really this seasons Mahrez & Alli?

Honestly I just can't see it happening. Then again I never saw Mahrez & Alli happening til it was too late.

    Snoddy tops them all.......

Capoue is perfect 5th mid for me and I am glad I got him even though I benched all his points. Fed is a no no from me. Swans look pretty useless to me but yes he has got some decent returns. Poo and Snoods for me as well.

Honestly cant see it continuing for Fer or Snoddy due to the quality of their team more than anything. They will do well but not that well imo.

Capoue on the other hand could keep going i reckon. That first XI and even the bench for Watford looks really good to me. Roberto Pereyra looks a class player and if Ighalo goes god mode then i think they will do very well.

This. Really contemplating watford double up with deeney + capoue. Would get pereyra but just too many good options in midfield.

Had a shocker this week, Ibra was the only one to get me anything. Hopefully one of my Everton players can get a few points!

Team is looking okay for next gw though:

    Foster
    Baines Valencia Stones
    Sanchez Hazard Redmond Puncheon
    Ibra Lukaku Gray

    Jak Capoue Friend Amat

Have a few bob in the bank so thinking the obvious transfer is Gray out. For one week who would you prefer:

    A) Benteke
    B) Iheanacho
    C) Kane

On A at the moment. Cheers.
