Leicester begin with a bang, Spurs with a whimper and Sergio Aguero like he’s never been away as Wednesday’s Champions League action provides mixed fortunes for our Fantasy assets.

Aguero issues chilling reminder

It might have been 24 hours late, but the wait was worth it for everyone bar the hardy German fans who stuck around to watch their side taken apart by Pep Guardiola’s City.

Sergio Aguero (13.0) hit a hat-trick and Kelechi Iheanacho (7.0) came off the bench to complete a rout in which City outshot their opponents by 23 efforts to three and had 11 attempts on target to Monchengladbach’s one.

Assists came from Aleksander Kolarov (5.9), Raheem Sterling (8.3), Leroy Sane (7.8) and debutant Ilkay Gundogan (5.4), who replaced the injured David Silva.

The extent of the Spaniard’s problem was played down by Guardiola post-match.

“It is not a big problem but enough for him not to play. I don’t know if he will be in time to play against Bournemouth.”

Guardiola otherwise stuck with the team as announced on Tuesday, suggesting possible weekend starts for the rested Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy (both 5.4) and Nolito (9.0).

Gundongan didn’t do his claims for inclusion any harm either, with Guardiola effusive in his praise.

“Ilkay had three or four months out. He was so intelligent. He’s an amazing player and he’s going to help us a lot this year. We’re so happy to have him with us.”

With Aguero just one more league match away from serving out his suspension, and Iheanacho scoring in the meantime, Guardiola has plenty to keep him content at the moment.

One thing is certain – Aguero hasn’t lost any of his sharpness whilst he’s been absent from first team duties. Bournemouth will be thankful that he sits out Saturday’s encounter, us Fantasy managers will continue to ponder how we plan for his return.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Gundogan (Clichy 81), Sterling (Sane 79) , Aguero (Iheanacho 83). Subs: Caballero, Sagna, Nolito, Sane, Clichy, Tasende, Iheanacho.

Mahrez clicks on Euro debut

Leicester’s Champions League bow couldn’t really have gone much better – a fine away win, a clean sheet and two much-needed goals for Riyad Mahrez (9.4).

The Foxes’ opener came from Marc Albrighton (5.3), before Mahrez scored from a free-kick, and later a penalty, after fouls on Jamie Vardy (9.9).

It was a welcome return to the Mahrez of last season, whose patchy domestic form prompted us to question his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) value prior to the match.

Claudio Ranieri later revealed that he wanted new signing Islam Slimani (8.5), who looked lively throughout, to take the spot kick instead of Mahrez – bad news for the 17.7% of FPL managers hoping Vardy might have been back on penalty duties.

“Yes, maybe the music woke him (Mahrez) up. Maybe he is very tired, too tired of dilly ding, dilly dong and prefers the Champions League music. I tried to say Slimani because he is the penalty scorer but he has the personality to chose. If he doesn’t score I take the neck and I crush the neck. He took the responsibility.”

Albrighton’s goal came from a long throw by Luis Hernandez (4.4), in for Danny Simpson (5.0), with Ranieri deciding to rest his first-choice right-back despite declaring himself fit after limping off at Liverpool on Saturday.

“Danny Simpson, now he is trying to do something but in this moment I think why take a risk? We play every three days. All the matches for us are important. I risk him I could lose him for one month.”

In the end, he wasn’t needed. The hope now for FPL backers of Mahrez and Vardy is that they, and the team, can take their European form back home with them.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernandez, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Albrighton, Drinkwater, Amartey, Mahrez (Gray 81), Slimani (Ulloa 62), Vardy (Musa 70). Subs: Zieler, Chilwell, Musa, King, Gray, Ulloa, Wasilewski.

Spurs humbled in Wembley opener

Arsenal fans could have told them – not that their Spurs counterparts would have listened anyway – but playing your home Champions League ties at Wembley rarely ends well.

And so it proved, Tottenham gifting Monaco a two-goal lead before Toby Alderweireld’s header, from an Erik Lamela corner, gave them hope but no points from a frustrating encounter.

Spurs enjoyed 67% possession, had twice as many attempts as their opponents and three times the number of shots on target and yet laboured against a Monaco side in-form and in clinical mood.

The same could not be said of Harry Kane (10.9), who broke his scoring duck in the league last week but still looked shorn of confidence and mobility.

The hope for the 14.4% of FPL managers sticking by the England striker is that the return of Mousa Dembele (5.5), who came on at half-time for the ineffectual Heung-Min Son (7.4), will allow both Kane and Dele Alli (8.3) greater attacking freedom.

Despite his assist, Erik Lamela’s (7.1) strong start to the season seems to be on the wane. Given just 36 minutes against Stoke last weekend, the Argentinian midfielder struggled at Wembley and was at fault for Monaco’s opening goal.

Owned by 13.1% in FPL, his place in the team could be under threat if boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to accommodate Dembele, Son and new man Moussa Sissoko (7.0) in a busy midfield.

Another key FPL asset, the 25.3%-owned Kyle Walker (5.7), played the full 90 minutes. Given Pochettino’s penchant for resting his full-backs after European nights, his involvement in Sunday’s home fixture with Sunderland could be in doubt.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier (Sissoko 81), Alli, Son (Dembele 45), Eriksen, Lamela (Janssen 71), Kane. Subs: Vorm, Janssen, Wanyama, Trippier, Sissoko, Dembele, Carter-Vickers.

Why is fletcher dropping in price? I mean what were they expecting of him? He's done exactly what was expected, 2 points /game. I can't transfer him out now, have to take the drop.

4.0m defender who could or could not get gametime, was signed by Moyes from Man U so I'm taking the gamble that he will play a fair bit.

      Good 5th choice defender imo.

Bear in mind he is also competing with Manquillo for the RB slot.

If you remember Manquillo was dire at Liverpool, if he's the same at Sunderland he will soon lose his spot.

    Foster
    Stones | Williams | Pieters
    Sanchez | Mane | Antonio | Capoue
    Ibra | Kane (C) | Benteke

    Jakup | Fer | Amat | Love

+2.3 in the Bank for Kane > Aguero next week.

How's this looking for GW5 WC (not pulled the trigger yet tho)

    Heaton, Jaku

    Amat, Walker, Stones, Shaw, Evans

    Hazard, Sanchez, Antonio, Bolasie, Capoue

    Costa. ibra, Ihenacho

Gets me city cover this week, and overall better team, most likely take a hit this week anyway, so not fussed about taking one next.

-4 next week would be Sanchez > Cazorla or Lallana and Costa to Aguero. Ihenacho to Deeney in GW7

I think I'm happy with a long term structure of Aguero + Ibra + 7.5 or below FWD.

There's a lot of decent options there now and some great fixture runs in the short-mid terms for a few options.

    HOW TO "HAVE 'EM ALL"

I was wondering if it was possible to have all of what I consider to be the "Big Four" plus Lukaku and still have a full playable squad.

It turns out it is possible but there are obviously sacrifices...

    Pickford Jaku
    Valencia 3 x 4.5 Amat
Hazard Sanchez Snodgrass (or similar) Capoue De Roon
    Aguero Ibra Lukaku

    Downsides -
The goalies may not be secure longer term,
The defence is OK but not brilliant
None of those great value mid priced mids are included (Antonio, Cazorla, Firmino, etc)
Capoue is promoted from your bench (you may not view this a bad thing!)

But it is possible - all those big hitters in a full playing squad

Yep it is. Trouble is, are they even the best options? I don't think we can confidently say Sanchez is the second best (or best) midfield option

Would you WC now with this options or just roll with current team and wait until next week?
    Current team:
    Foster
    Shaw Stones McAuley
    Sanchez Hazard Tadic Antonio Capoue
    Ibra Lukaku
    Jak Diomande Friend Amat
2.9m itb. Already used free transfer to get Antonio.

    Possible WC-team
    Foster Jak
    Valencia Koscielny Baines McAuley Amat
    Firmino Cazorla Antonio Capoue Fletcher
    Kane Ibra Lukaku
Enough itb for Kane->Kun next week

Gray to Iheanacho for a hit?

Wildcarding next week anyway. And guy at top of my mini league has him as captain...

Just feel it's a bigger risk to go without as no city cover.

    Canvassing second opinion here.

currently fighting with myself trying to go with my guts and bring Payet in though mathes say Antonio is the right pick.

Still, really think payet might be worth the difference

I don't think Payet is worth the difference. Think he'll get more points, yes, but he isn't worth 2.5m more. He won't outscore cheaper options such as Firmino & Mane either imo

Antonio is on fire. Payet is also quality enough to gain you points. But price is the factor for many

i have preferred Alexis for a few years, buy the weight of one thing after the other convinces me to keep Hazard and ship Alexis next week, to fund Kun:

-- Giroud will play again and there are just so many ways for the Gunners to score. i think this
is the main reason why Alexis' returns are always so erratic . . . for Chelsea, it's Haz + Costa

        -- then there's penaties

-- then there's the price difference

-- then there's CL and South America vs. Europe WC qualifiers

-- but thing that tipped it for me is that Wenger rested Alexis this time after the international game.
he has never done that before, which to me means he has made the decision to treat Alexis more
gingerly to try and avoid his late season burnout. i think he will pull him earlier in games, rest him
        again after internationals etc.

Way too punty, plus he's not the type of playing you want in FPL. Won't be amongst goals or assists really

      Fantasy Football Scout

With all the huge hauls from the likes of Lukaku and Aguero last night proving he is essential are we in danger of forgetting all about last year's Champions - Leicester. Another impressive display from Mahrez last night and with Vardy looking dangerous too should our affections be returning to the east midlands?

No. CL (with a fairly small squad) + their prices make them non-options for me

can't fit them in at the moment, also sounds like Slimani could be on pens, which seems a big issue so far this year

Mahrez took and scored a pen while Slimani was on the pitch so he won't be on pens

Leicester's game has been well read in the PL this season and i think they will struggle as teams will play them very differently to last season

Ranieri said Slimani is meant to be on penalties and that he would have 'Crushed the neck' of Mahrez if he missed after taking the ball from him.

Mahrez is by no means nailed on pens.

My situation is a bit different, in that I have Vardy, and wonder whether to keep for BUR, or play WC now - in which case he will be shipped. Mahrez is wait and see.

Nope... doubt vardy will score more points than aguero or Ibra or even Kane .. mahrez is still worth considering I think as he's on pens and also a quality player - just that at that price point it's tricky trying to fit him in and hazard both

      9. ChameLeon Best

If you see the passing structures of Leicester this year, they have been less direct in there build-up.
This is does negate the efficiency of Vardy and Mahrez.
A team full of pace, large physical center backs... I can envisage a lot of penalties which brings Mahrez overall projected PPG up significantly.

If Slimani takes the place of Okazaki, and is on pens as Ranieri said he will be, then he is the best attacking option for me at 8.5. Will have to wait and see how it unfolds. The fixtures turn kindly in GW11.

      11. Still Unsure
          9 years, 4 months ago

No. Prem teams have figured out Leicester's style of play, in the most part anyway. In the CL they'll do better as they're an unknown, especially away from home when teams push on and open themselves up to their counter attacks.
