A Baggies attacker, a consistent Everton and a volatile market that’s showing the door to a goalscoring legend. We say goodbye to Gameweek 5 with a tale of the unexpected…

The Player

Immediately filed under “promising, must monitor”, Nacer Chadli was always going to be an interesting option once he’d made the move to West Brom.

An erratic Fantasy asset while at White Hart Lane, the Belgian nonetheless demonstrated the ability to spark to life in the box, raiding for goals and suddenly turning a forgettable average six out of ten performance, into a match-winning display.

That wasn’t the case in Gameweek 5.

On Saturday, the Baggies record signing carried the game to West Ham from the kick-off; Chadli single-handedly transformed West Brom from a ponderous, impotent attacking force to a team that bristled with threat.

His two goals and two assists have immediately brought him to the attention of the masses but, distracted by leading lights elsewhere, he’s yet to register the transfer interest Saturday’s points tally deserves.

We still have reservations. It’s still difficult to trust West Brom’s potential to score goals: we can hardly make a judgement based on a single performance against a beleaguered Hammers defence.

But with penalty duties unexpectedly tucked away in his locker, Chadli is clearly alive and back in the game.

Another handy mid-price candidate to call upon once West Brom’s schedule softens.

The Team

Five Gameweeks in and Everton’s recognition as a Fantasy force is already long overdue.

While Everton barely had to break into their third gear to see off Middlesbrough, it’s clear that they have become a very different proposition under Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman has revived their Fantasy assets.

We’ve already dwelt on the appeal of Romelu Lukaku.

While we remain wary of a player that has teased us for so long, his displays and output thus far have given us every reason to believe that we will see him make another stride towards genuine heavy-hitter status. A true challenge for the Golden Boot is on – 25 goals perhaps a realistic target.

But the supporting cast also warrants attention.

At the back, Seamus Coleman’s fine opener against ‘Boro was his reminder of his six-goal season back in 2013/14.

While we’re willing Leighton Baines to rediscover his returns from bygone years, Coleman has the legs on the left-back and could yet emerge as the stronger option.

Then we add Ashley Williams – a statistical monster who can potentially offer an even cheaper route into covering Everton’s new level of resilience.

In midfield, Koeman has added Yannick Bolasie on the right and appears to be investing faith in Kevin Mirallas on the opposite flank.

Both have the talent to provide us with mid-price options – particularly for those who still baulk at the concept of Ross Barkley following Lukaku’s lead in shaking off his frustrating inconsistencies.

The Talking Point

The mighty really are falling.

Eden Hazard’s price has tumbled 0.2 in the space of 48 hours with thousands of owners panicked at his meagre returns with Manchester City’s midfield assets sparkling.

Three points over his last two Gameweeks, plus an alarming decline in his underlying numbers, has provided the catalyst for what some would describe as a knee jerk reaction.

Last season’s decline will have also spooked some – we’ve seen how severely Hazard can regress; three encouraging Gameweeks has clearly not been enough to win back our trust.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is close to mirroring Hazard’s sudden collapse.

Triggered by Manchester United’s current malaise and Sergio Aguero’s return, Ibrahimovic is being mercilessly shown the door at pace, despite returning a goal or an assist in four of his five Gameweeks.

It fits the profile of the season discussed in last week’s ScoutCast.

The transfer activity of the last ten days is typical of a campaign that will see heavy-hitters frequently slide in and out of favour.

Last season we sat on the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Dele Alli because they provided such value: we were wary of selling them and absorbing a big cash loss and, given their price and a lack of alternatives, we could afford to sit tight.

With big funds tied up in both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, this is not the case. FPL managers will feel compelled to act quickly, driven by a market where every 0.1 counts.

The money tied up in failing heavy-hitters can be used to carry out significant surgery, or to move to the next big name edging into form and rising in price. There’s been a constant supply of those so far.

Regardless of the trend, many will sit still, discounting toughening fixtures for both Hazard and Ibrahimovic, backing them to punish the fickle amongst us.

It remains to be seen who will win out. But one thing is certain: the short-lived shelf life of the big hitters is already making for a fascinating season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A triple of Deeney Capoue Holebas feels wrong, but my head says it's right.

    Thoughts on this triple?

Know what you mean but cant fault it really. 3 players for that cheap is needed/ helps if wanting the high priced players. Deeney the only real option for lower priced striker, maybe Benteke. Shame Bony plays for Stoke

    How's about this DZ?

    Foster - Jaku
    Williams - Kos - Holebas - Amat - 4.0
    Sanchez Payet Firmino Sterling Capoue
    Lukaku Aguero Diamonde

    Defence too weak?

No could work with the fixtures the 3 starting defenders have. Still think Payet > Antonio could make it stronger. However that is template. Payet should score more over course of the season.

        Yeah Cheers
Gut is screaming Payet TBH. maybe ditch the double City, Sterling > Snoddy or something like that.

In a 343 I might agree on having Snodgrass and Capoue and trying to rotate. with a 352 I think that is risky. Go with gut keep Payet and Sterling and hope that defence is strong enough with the fixtures.

Worth a -8 to get Kun in this squad? Planned on doing a -4 next week.

    Foster (Jaku)
Baines / McAuley/ Holebas (Valencia, Amat)
    Mané(C) / Sanchez / Sterling / Capoue (Snodgrass)
    Ibra(VC) / Lukakku / Benteke

I don't believe Igahlo is nailed on for Watford anymore. That open goal miss might be the straw the broke the camels back. I also believe it's a massive gamble to go more than two Watford players. That have a nice run of fixtures but are they going to steam roll teams???? Don't think so

Of course he's nailed. One miss doesn't instantly mean he's dropped.

Tripling up isn't a bad idea.

Holebas - Potential CS's and attacking threat
      Capoue - Capoue...
      Deeney - Goals, assists, pens.

The fact Watford have done as well as they have, with the fixtures they've had make it an easy choice for me.

Just had a thought about the AOA chip. Does it make more sense to play it late in the season, when you have more money overall, and therefore better players?

Obviously there are many other factors, but hadn't thought of this

its usually a poor card, play it when you like

I like reserving the chips for DGWs. I do think there is validity to your theory as well, and of all the chips, the AOA is probably the least desirable. Not sure it really matters with that one, unless you have a great group of attacking players with great fixtures one GW.

Heard some good reasoning about playing it week before or after double gameweek when you have loaded up the attack with a WC. Seems to make sense. So yeah late in the season it's a pot luck chip whenever you play it.

I'm pretty shocked by how much Hazard's price has dropped in just a week. I understand the temptation to sell him but surely not for a hit right?

Yes. City are the only team in the league who look like they're capable of scoring 4 or 5 goals any given game. KDB will be involved in most of them

Certainly not!! He is on pens, KDB will play a bit deeper. Would do it for a FT only

Unless the rules have changed, he won't drop again this week so you can probably hold off on the hit if you were worried about further price drops.

Well, some felt they had to get Kun back and keep 2 heavies up top so 2FT's + a hit kind of did the trick, and got shot of Collins te boot 😉

I sold him for a hit because I knew a drop or more was coming and KDB is absolutely bossing the Premier League right now. I can't stand by and watch it any longer! I won't! 🙂

Taken a risk and gone with a 3-5-2 for the foreseeable future given Capoue's form and fixtures. I won't be making the Capoue decision each week! Madness or a decent move?

    Pickford
    Baines, Shaw, Evans
    Antonio, Sterling, Sanchez, Firmino, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku

    Bench: Heaton, Friend, Amat, Diomande

1.6 in the bank to perhaps 'upgrade' Capoue when/ if the time comes.

Weird I have 1.6 ITB and on 352 all seasons. Capoue as 5th mid is just gravy. What you thinking of doing with ITB. I have same mid and I am tempted by Sterling to KDB , probably needs a defence .5 downgrade to finance it?

Yeah, for me Shaw might be on the chopping block soon but for me I'd keep Sterling as I don't think he will be impacted as much be the return of Kun as KDB will be.

I actually fancy Holebas a bit more than Williams this GW.
Burnley are struggling hard for goals and Bournemouth are decent at home.
Plus Holebas has good attacking potential.

What's the deal with Scott Dann??? Nobody seems to be interested.
Scored a goal against Stoke. Another header cleared off the line and a goal in the final seconds costing him a clean sheet. 5.5m price tag screws up a lot of teams I suppose.

    1. Jape

      He still plays for Palace.
If they had at least decent chances for clean sheets, he'd be essential.
He's still a pricey, streaky Palace defender with bad upcoming fixtures.

    3. The Enlightener
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I've been interested since day 1. But, I haven't committed on actually getting him. Was going to more recently, but other moves needed to be made first. He is a huge blip on my radar, that's for sure.

      1. The Enlightener
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

But yes, as the other two said, there's that whole Palace thing, which has been my main reason to hold off.

        1. Spg76
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

He's got a star next to his name. I think it's the price tag more than the Palace factor tbh. Screws up options for really good 4th midfielders. That extra one million makes the difference

          1. The Enlightener
            • 12 Years
            9 years, 3 months ago

Yes. Price a factor as well. A combination of reasons have lead to me leaving him out overall. Can't get them all, as they say.

    Hi,

    How is this team:

    Cech (Jakupovic)
    Holebus, Walker, Jagielka (McAuley, Collins)
    Antonio, Sanchez, Firmino, Sterling, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku (Stuani)

    1. Holding Mee Bong

Starting 11 fine for now. If on WC just go all out for 352 take Stauni and upgrade defender a bit -Coleman / baines for Jag.

    2. Sanchit
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

I think that KDB's role isn't changed much with Aguero in the team. Rather, It's about Silva. When Silva and KDB play together in midfield, sometimes Silva will go up and KDB will stay, sometimes vice versa but when KDB is paired with Gundogan, KDB is the one who goes up everytime and Gundogan stays back everytime. The United game was different because KDB played a false 9 after 60 minutes.

For the next two weeks only:

    A) Mane (HUL, swa) and Bolasie (bou, CPL)

    B) Sanchez (CHE, bur) and Capoue (bur, BOU)

I'm leaning toward A, and then using the two free transfers in GW8 to bring in Sanchez for Mane.

    Kaku, Kun, Zlatan

    On WC.

There is very little form amongst defenders so far this year, but Tottenham have the best defensive record of any team so far and Walker has returned pretty regular bonus and/or attacking points as well. I don't see any better options right now especially at the price.

since 29 april 2011, chelsea only lost once to arsenal (home & away). the one that they lost was community shield back in aug 2015.

arsenal last scored against them (except the community sheild goal), is in 2012.
