Man City inspire, Arsenal perspire and the Ilkay Gundogan (5.6) bandwagon goes into overdrive on a night of high entertainment in the Champions League.

Manchester City 3 Barcelona 1

If attack is the best form of defence, then this was one of the finest rearguard actions of the season.

A high tempo, relentlessly open encounter went the way of City thanks to their relentless industry and threat from midfield, with a brace from Gundogan and superb Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) free-kick earning the home side a deserved three points.

Gundogan’s fourth goal in as many days has added 0.1 to his price and close to 200,000 new Fantasy Premier League new owners.

The German could earn starts against Middlesbrough at home and then Crystal Palace and Burnley away either side of the international break. That should see his 6.1% ownership rise further, providing he makes the first XI against ‘Boro.

De Bruyne has played just 68 minutes of the last two domestic matches following injury but was back to his dynamic best against Barca, while Raheem Sterling (8.3) provided an assist in a lively display.

David Silva (8.7) and Sergio Aguero (13.1), who was brought back into the Euro fold after a benching in Barcelona, also recorded assists.

City coach Pep Guardiola made three changes from the side that swept past West Brom at the weekend, with Willy Caballero (4.9) replacing the suspended Claudio Bravo (5.5) in goal, Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) returning at right back after injury and De Bruyne in for Nolito (8.7).

Zabaleta added experience to a defence in which Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) was outstanding, while Fernandinho’s (5.4) discipline freed up Gundogan to drift forward to devastating effect. The Brazilian later limped off with a knock and is now a doubt for the Middlesbrough match on Saturday.

Saturday’s team-sheet is now the main concern for Fantasy managers.

Given that there is a break to follow, Guardiola is likely to prioritise fielding a full-strength side, although he does have a wealth of options to mix things up – one or two changes do look likely.

Nolito, Jesus Navas and Leroy Sane are all options in the attacking positions that will threaten the likes of Sterling and Gundogan.

Sterling was preserved with 20 minutes remaining, indicating that he would seem in line to start once again. Despite his form, Gundogan’s starting role is less assured, with Nolito perhaps introduced on the flank, shifting De Bruyne back to a central role.

Man City XI: Caballero, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho (Fernando 60), Sterling (Navas 71), De Bruyne (Nolito 89), Gundogan, Silva, Aguero.
Subs not used: Gunn, Kompany, Clichy, Iheanacho.

Ludogorets Razgrad 2 Arsenal 3

Arsenal booked their place in the last 16, but had to go the long way round to do it.

Goals from Granit Xhaka (5.2), Olivier Giroud (8.8) – his third in two matches – and Mesut Ozil’s (9.6) fine individual effort wiped out a two-goal deficit to give the Gunners a fighting chance of actually winning their Champions League group for a change.

Ozil, Aaron Ramsey (7.6) and Mohamed Elneny (4.6) provided the assists.

Boss Arsene Wenger was again without the injured trio of Theo Walcott (8.0), Santi Cazorla (7.2) and Nacho Monreal (6.0) and chose not to risk Hector Bellerin (6.6), who picked up a knock in the weekend win at Sunderland.

Xhaka, Giroud, Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson (5.0) came in, with David Ospina (4.8) retaining his Euro place in goal.

The form of the returning Giroud is of particular concern to the 25.3% who own Alexis Sanchez (11.4).

The Chilean went back to the left flank to accommodate the striker, and with Spurs at home and then Man United away up next for the Gunners, the attacking threat of the six-goal Sanchez suddenly looks compromised.

Ramsey’s first start since Gameweek 1 also thickens the plot, with competition in midfield a boost for Wenger but an added complication for FPL managers with Walcott and Cazorla in their squads.

Wenger stated post-match against Sunderland that Giroud’s future as a starter could be limited to a 4-4-2 set-up, alongside Sanchez. Last night’s tactical shift immediately compromised that statement and illustrated the options available to the Gunners boss.

Nonetheless, we should expect Sanchez to lead the attack again on Sunday, with Walcott likely to return having been pictured back in training just 48 hours ago.

Ramsey is now clearly a factor, although he much prefers a central role and cannot match the in-form Walcott’s thrust and goal threat. Wenger has talked up Walcott in tandem with Sanchez the striker as a “good working unit” and, for now, that surely remains his first choice option.

There’s little doubt that the pair will have to maintain their output to hold those current roles, however. Perhaps no bad thing for owners of Sanchez and Walcott.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Coquelin, Xhaka (Elneny 87), Ramsey (Oxlade-Chamberlain 75), Özil, Sánchez (Iwobi 90), Giroud.
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Holding, Maitland-Niles.

Someone may have posted something along these lines already so apologies if I've missed it.

Gundogans scoring record before moving to City wasn't amazing, many of the goals being PK's.

Guys that have bought him, are you thinking he is scoring more these days due to playing a different role/being in a very attacking team?

His price is a big draw, il give you that, but, deep down, I have this gut feeling he's a transfer waiting to happen. Willing to be convinced otherwise though?

city look electric and hes been a big part of that, for the price cant go wrong, rare for everyone in your fpl team to perform anyway and he enables me to aford KDB, happy to take the risk

He's not a consistent goalscorer,I have absolutely no doubt about that. But when you put him in the same price bracket as current fantasy darling Joe Allen you have to agree he may be worth considering. He plays in a much better side that will create more chances.

That said,Allen plays more advanced and Gundogan always has a question mark over his head in terms of fitness.

For me,a flash in the pan and I agree with you.

He is scoring more cos he's in a more attacking role.Scoring rate previously impacted by lack of fitness.

Remains to be seen if he'll primarily be as attacking. I think he will be, a more Yayaesque role. Why would you not use this strength?

It happens too much. Prominent player gets injured and when selling people will look first at a similar priced player rather than the cheaper inform replacement.

      Hey Dan,
The other option in that bracket Allen has fixtures West Ham, Bournemouth Watford Burnley in the next 4. Also he is more nailed on to start and plays an advanced role
Will give Allen those fixtures and after which if Gundogan has form will get him with more info.

Btw did you consider my offer on twitter?

    Sanchez Bolasie Capoue Milner Snodgrass

Sanchez won't get rested away to Manchester United. Aguero maybe. One of Firm or Cout will start away to Southampton. I think Firm will play as he is usually on the bench for Brazil & Coutinho starts both matches.

Nah I could, I just don't want to buy him. Seeing his career goal stats is offputting, and I really doubt anything significant has changed despite these few goals he's scored.

Main reason for de roon is to gain from all those Capoue price rises.

Yeh, I just really don't want to be using many transfers in this area of my team. I have the feeling that if I buy gundogan then il be transferring him out within a few weeks. I think he'll be one of those players who rises loads, but then suddenly drops leaving you needig to make a transfer in an area of your team which is one of the least point yielding.

    A) Hazard and Gündogan
    B) KDB and Allen

-A) Gündogan might be a rotation risk, and Hazard have worse fixtures than KDB. But Hazard is Hazard.
-B) Both have good fixtures and no rotation risk.

    Thanks!

Do you have aguero? So Hazard and allen. IMO
Beside that, you can upgrade in somewhere else

KDB looked so good yesterday and due to the fact they have easy fixtures I gotta go with him instead of Hazard. I could always switch to Hazard after GW14 if I feel like.

Midfield of firmino, Sanchez, Walcott, Allen, Snodgrass...

So Walcott to Coutinho or Snodgrass to Redmond (benching headache)?

Using my wildcard, what do you say:

    Heaton (Jaku)
McAuley Stones Daniels (2 non starters)
    Hazard Sanchez Coutinho McArthur Allen
    Lukaku Aguero(C) (Barrow)

Guys who still own Snod for who you are transfering him out? I am on Gundo or Allen for next 3,4 gw.

Capoue and Son >> Redmond and Allen for GW11

    Then

    Redmond > Chadli GW12 , 13 and 14 due to fixtures.

    Thoughts???

dunno why people worried bout Gundogan's previous role for Dortmund, Lee bloody Cattermole would score points in this City team and how defensive is he gonna need to be against Middlesborough anyway

Would you keep Arnautovic if you had him with Capoue to cover this week?

He looked extremely good vs Swansea..

anyone else keep looking at gundogan and thinking "if he's that cheap surely he can't be that good" ?
maybe it's more so if you have more than that price to spend, for example anyone thinking of ditching arnautovic now

Price doesn't redecorate his ability. After all, the only reason he isn't say 8-9m is because a few bods at FPL towers have priced him based on previous seasons playing for a different team with a different style of play.

Not to say that I think he's worth 8-9m or that he will carry on with points hauls. But his price should be the last thing to deter you.

yeah, it's just a weird sub-conscious thing. if he was 7mil i'd be taking him more seriously even though he's the same player and that would make his value worse!

          Kane/Austin the season before

I won't be brining Gundogan in as he just doesn't fit in my team set-up. However those that are in the mind that he isn't a safe starter I must say I think (bar general rotation which applies to most players from big clubs and every City player) he is guaranteed to start.

He's a player brought in by Pep. Fits Pep's system well and is an all round very good player.

The only debate is where he plays. Against bigger teams he may be slightly further forward but for this weekend for example he will be the "holding midfield" player in the side.

ideally we'd know if bony is on pens in bojan's continued absence. a penalty friendly ref is at the west ham game this weekend but arnautovic being out means it may not be conclusive.

was a bit concerned benteke's 3 goals brough just 2 bps, and how he's far from involved in all their goals (3 of 14), so leaning towards bony now

A Message to all the Gündoğan Haters...

If you have no other pressing issues, you may as well just get him in while his price is low. The worst case scenario is you will stand to gain 0.2m/0.3m (should he rise to £6m as expected) in the next few weeks, which you can use to bring someone you previously couldn't afford.

We've all been there when we do our teams and we are 0.1m off our perfect side... This would fix that!

Who knows what formation Pep may play? He could end up being this season's Dele Alli, but even if he isn't, and it all goes pear shaped for him, at least you will have profited handsomely.

This season - more than all the previous nine that I've played - has proved to me that team value will play an integral part in my 'Overall Rank' come the end of the season.

So, in a nutshell - İlkay Gündoğan is the perfect 4th/5th midfielder
    (For the time being) 🙂

    Thanks

      I agree.

I already have Allen so can't fit him in or otherwise I would. As you say, for the price rises as much as anything.

Although those without a midfield hole to fill so have the luxury of waiting a few weeks to reasses as even with a few price rises he will still be cheap.

        Current Mids:
        Alexis - Mane - Coutinho - Gundogan - Allen

The last two will be sharing duties.

          I have

          Sanchez / Hazard / Cout / Firm / Allen

And I'm playing 3-5-2. So there's no room at the inn for me.

The rate the players prices are rising (and falling) tends to be far more crazy than all my previous seasons playing the game.

And I'm sure others will agree.
