Spurs are woeful and Leicester resolute on a night of diminished Champions League returns for the English sides. Here’s how the rather insignificant amount of action played out.

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1

Spurs slipped to third in their group after another nervy and unconvincing attempt to make Wembley their Champions League home.

Eric Dier (5.2) hit the bar from a free-kick and Dele Alli (8.2) might have had a penalty, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men were otherwise outplayed, hurried when in possession and stretched when without, as the visitors out-shot them by 11 attempts to nine.

More worryingly, they are now winless in six matches in all competitions and have scored just twice in their last five – and both of those were from penalties.

With Erik Lamela (6.7) missing out due to a hip problem, Pochettino recalled midfielder Moussa Sissoko (6.7), who is still banned domestically. Striker Vincent Janssen (7.7) dropped to the bench and full back Danny Rose (5.9) was rested, presumably with Sunday’s North London derby in mind – Ben Davies (4.8) took his place.

Janssen was soon involved, however, as Mousa Dembele (5.4) went off with a knock, which meant a return to midfield for Heung-Min Son (7.5). The South Korean, who has failed to score in his last four league starts, was a peripheral figure throughout. Close to 90,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have now cut their losses on him this week alone.

With their injury list slowly growing, Spurs’ squad is starting to look rather thin. They have sorely missed the goals of Harry Kane (10.7) is recent weeks and the England man’s possible return from an ankle injury for the weekend’s match at Arsenal cannot come soon enough.

However, with Pochettino confirming a twisted ankle for Dembele, he’ll be a major doubt for Sunday’s clash – we all know by now the impact that his absence can have on Spurs and, in particular, Kane’s scoring rate.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Dembélé (Janssen 30), Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen (Winks 66), Son (Nkoudou 73).
Subs not used: Vorm, Rose, Nkoudou, Onomah, Carter-Vickers.

FC Copenhagen 0 Leicester City 0

Sometimes the stats say it all: two teams; 29 attempts between them; only three on target. Result? Goalless draw.

But that was an outcome which suited Leicester just fine, with the Foxes needing just one more point from two matches to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Coach Claudio Ranieri made three changes from the side who scrapped to a draw away at Tottenham, with Luis Hernandez (4.3) in for Danny Simpson (4.9), Daniel Amartey (4.5) replacing Andy King (4.8) and Jeffrey Schlupp (4.9) coming in for Shinji Okazaki (5.7).

Islam Slimani (8.4), still struggling with a groin injury, didn’t even travel, which meant another start for the in-form Ahmed Musa (7.0).

The Foxes became the first side to keep a clean sheet in their first four Champions League matches, and it was no surprise that Ranieri reserved much of his praise for Kasper Schmeichel (5.0), who produced a fine late save to secure the draw.

City are now starting to replicate their Euro form in the Premier League. A good run of forthcoming fixtures – West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Watford and Sunderland – could prompt investment in the champions, particularly at the back.

Ranieri would seem unlikely to be concerned with resting players for Sunday’s meeting with West Brom given that an international break now looms.

However, the likes of Marc Albrighton (5.1) and Okazaki will be pushing for recalls, while Simpson would seem likely to slot in at right-back. Hernandez, Schlupp and perhaps Musa look the most likely to come under threat.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernández, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs, Mahrez, Amartey, Drinkwater, Schlupp (Okazaki 71), Vardy, Musa.
Subs not used: Zieler, King, Albrighton, Simpson, Okazaki, Gray, Ulloa.

Has the Schmeichel injury prompted a rethink regarding drafting in a Leicester defender?

Back up Zieler has started two games this season offering us little to go on.

He kept a clean sheet at home to Burnley and shipped four away to Manchester United.

Haha I literally just posted this... I'm still probably getting Fuchs in I think. Zieler is meant to be a decent 'keeper in his own right, and the fixtures are still very nice.

I think this, combined with the fact that Leicester's defensive stats are actually quite poor anyway, has put me off.

Their home record is solid and they have tightened up in general lately. Brought in Fuchs two weeks ago. Can't say this injury isn't worrying. Sticking for now.

I still think I'll be on Fuchs because I'm happy with Heaton & Foster but for others it seems a great option.

I think Fuchs is still worth it. He has strong attacking threat at home in particular and Zieler's clean sheet v Burnley bodes well considering the poor opposition they face in the next four.

If Leicester had the likes of ManU etc coming up I'd definitely be put off. Zieler is clearly no Heaton when it comes to keeping the big guns at bay.

Although this does also make me think that Alonso (who I want anyway long term) could be a better move.
Plenty of time to decide as Valencia and Fuchs' price isn't going anywhere for a while.

Did Burnley have any shots on target in that game? Did Zieler make any impressive saves? That's what I'd like to know before reading anything into 1 CS

          Good point.

Just had a look and not good news for clean sheet fans.

          V Burnley Zieler made 1 save...that's it.

V Man U he made three, but two were long range so easy.

Meanwhile he shipped four goals, mainly at set pieces and only saved 1 close range shot.

Ok - I'm now rethinking, he's not looking too hot at set pieces and close range shots in partic. In fact if you own McAuley or Rondon now may be the time to captain 😉

All the bou def are good. I'd definitely get one if you haven't already.

Going into GWK 10 there were three Bou def in the top ten scoring defenders in FPL... Two are still there.

Daniels my top tip as not on 4 yellows. Smith would be top if he wasnt on the tightrope.

Strengthens the case for Fuchs over Morgan in case you want to go Leicester, since there may not be many cleanies and you are then relying on baps and assists.

    So, riddle me this:

Walcott to Gundogan (-4)? Madness clearly yes? I also don't have Sanchez...

Reasoning would be more confidence Gundogan will start, easier fixture and next week I'm blowing up the team by selling Ibra so can get Arsenal cover in midfield then...

It's madness isn't it... I should walk away from the computer...

Madness or genius... I'm going for genius.

Who would come off the bench for Walcott in your team if he doesn't start?

I'm weighing up Tadic to Gundogan for -4. I keep saying 1 more week to Tadic but it's been too long now.

This season (so far) its anyone's (Arsenal's until March).

I'd ship Walcott if I had Sanchez and FT AND no other pressing issues, plenty of good options in his price range.

Yes, it's often sensible if there's a clearly strong team in the league at the time.... Like City when they won the league 3 seasons ago when Aguero - Yaya - Kompany was a great combo! So it depends, last season there was no team in such a great form for instance....

Triple ups are risky but there is clear reward.

I have a stoke triple up atm, Grant, Pieters and Allen. Grant is mostly sub GK for De Gea though. This has gave a decent points return in recent weeks through CS and Allen

I also now have triple Pool, ~Clyne, Lala and Cout and I don't worry about that too much, other than Clyne and his CS potential

How´s my team looking? Do you have any suggestions?

    Holebas Pieters Stones

    Firmino Cout Sanchez Allen

    Kun(c) Costa Austin

    Rose, Bolasie, Evans, Amat.

Really want Chadli for the next week, but Rose as 2nd keeper is killing me, having 3 Wba players already.

Remember when English teams dominated in the Champions League a few years ago? I believe that was in part due to the introduction of Mourinho at Chelsea which creating more competition in the PL, and in turn created better teams overall.

I have a feeling that the introduction of Pep at City could create a similar effect in conjunction with the added influence of Klopp and Conte. We’re already seeing one of the most competitive leagues ever and I can only see the big teams spending big to maintain there top 4 positions in the future.

nah. English teams get so busy with their schedules that its almost impossible to get fresh to the champions league as the others

You didn´t have middle table teams as strong as today. Stoke, Wba, Borough, Watford, even Swansea. its not easy to beat any of them

This is the problem. Top 6 can be competitive but when you can't rest players for any side in the top 10-15 then it becomes extremely difficult to compete on all fronts.

I haven't looked into this at all..

Got Walcott - could ship him to Coutinho (for a -4) - seems worthwhile with fixtures & worry over starts etc, but it would give me 3 Liverpool this week (Firmino, Cout & Lallana)...

Other option is Gundogan or stick on the Wally tightrope (without Sanchez)

What would be your priority with this lot. Have 2 FTs.

    Heaton
    Koscielny Clyne Holebas
    KdB Sanchez Walcott Lallana
    Costa Lukaku Austin

    Pickford Allen Pieters Amat

    1. Get Aguero (Lose Costa)
    2. Get Coutinho ( Lose Lallana/Walcott/Sanchez)

    Replies appreciated. Cheers.

I think you need one of KDB/Aguero - both is overkill and takes up a LOT of funds.

I would do the Walcott -> Coutinho move. Wally might start, but with his injury track reacord, I believe Wenger will:

      1. Start with Giroud
      2. Have him on the wing anyway (if he plays 90 minutes in the first place) - i think he'll come off the bench

Plus doubling up on Liv is a very good idea

      1. MoSalah Dosa
        • 10 Years

Don't have enough funds for a direct swap.

Having said that, even I agree on Walcott's injury concerns and Giroud's return.

Plus the great Arsenal November slump might just kick in.

        Thanks.

      Get Coutinho, lose Lallana.

Costa could be suspended one game, yes, but the fixtures for Chelsea are really bright from GW15, and you could still play 3-5-2 with Allen as your fifth mid wich is pretty strong.
