Diego Costa crowns another professional away performance from Antonio Conte’s men as Chelsea run out 1-0 winners over Middlesbrough. Elsewhere, Eden Hazard frustrates, while Marcos Alonso confirms his reputation as the most forward-thinking of defensive options. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s Teesside tussle.

On the Rise

Diego Costa
The Spaniard’s relentless form continued with an opportunistic strike, his tenth of the season and his fifth goal in the last six Gameweeks.

The goal, plus the fact that 10% of FPL managers handed Costa the armband, will again ramp up the pressure on those holding Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku following yesterday’s blanks and with toughening fixtures looming for the pair.

Still sitting on four bookings, Costa has now navigated through six Premier League outings without earning the caution that will trigger a one-match ban. Those who have held off investment on that basis will be beginning to wonder if it will arrive before the Gameweek 19 cut-off.

Costa will now be free to face the Spurs defence in Gameweek 13 and follows that with a crunch trip to the Etihad.

However, from Gameweek 15, Chelsea’s fixtures are nothing short of superb and, assured of starts over the busy Christmas spell, Costa’s stock seems destined to rise further.

While Hazard clearly represents a key midfield investment, the prospect of doubling up on Chelsea’s twin threats looks difficult to resist from Gameweek 15 onwards – barring that potential ban.

Marcos Alonso
The left wing-back has now returned a clean sheet in each of his six starts for Chelsea.

Curiously, Alonso has returned just a single bonus point in that time – mainly because, of all the four FPL defenders fielded, he returns the fewest defensive actions.

However, Alonso’s attacking promise was again evident at the Riverside.

Pushing forward almost as a left winger, he is clearly benefiting from linking with Eden Hazard, with defences distracted by the Belgian’s menace and leaving space for Alonso to exploit.

His end product was lacking and often is, but, given the frequency of his attacks and his presence in the box from both open play and set-pieces, further attacking returns look inevitable.

Coupled with Chelsea’s peerless resilience, Alonso appears to be the obvious top bracket defensive target.

In Decline

Eden Hazard
It’s incredibly harsh to knock Hazard following the first blank in five Gameweeks and, while his form and potential as a Fantasy asset remains far from “in decline”, our confidence in the Belgian as a rounded captain candidate can be questioned.

Having earned a reputation in previous seasons as an asset heavily biased towards home fixtures, he has so far reinforced that theory with his returns to this point. Hazard has now produced just a single goal on his travels: only 28 of his 82 points have arrived on the road.

While that will be a minor concern for most, it’s clear that Hazard is still a work in progress as an all-round candidate for the armband.

He has the advantage over Costa at Stamford Bridge but, home and away, the striker has a clear edge as a reliable and consistent scorer of points. Costa has scored in six of his past seven road trips.

Despite today’s failing, Hazard’s stock has to remain sky-high ahead of Chelsea’s festive fixtures and his place at the top of the Watchlist is untouched.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Perhaps Taylor plays the away games and Kingsley plays the home games?

I just think Bradley is still trying to figure out his best 11...

Taylor+Kingsley is a good option to assure one starter among the 4th+5th defenders. Sadly 1 minute run outs are what I'm scared of.

Came off the left in GW11

i'm not really sure on how the formation works at Sunderland. Either way if they decide to stick with just Defoe up front then Borini is more suited to the wing. Although Anichebe's physicality is certainly an asset and is in sublime form so will keep his start for now.

Hey guys, could I have some advice with what I should do with my team this week??

    Grant (Pickford)
    Alonso, Fuchs, Holebas (Evans, PVA)
    Hazard, Coutinho, Firmino, Wally (Allen)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

    0mil itb, 1FT

I was considering going Wally and Lukaku -> Chadli and Kane for a -4 point hit, although, I've had Lukaku since the very start and I have a lot of value built up in him so I'm not sure if I should get rid of him. Thoughts??

Many are contemplating losing Lukaku so you are not alone

I wouldnt lose Walcott though how about downgrading Fuchs instead ?

Longterm I prefer Costa over Kane just think hes more consistent, better form and fixtures, cheaper etc

Unfortunately, due to Kane's price rise, I would have to downgrade Fuchs to a non-playing 4mil defender to be able to afford Kane...... Which I don't want to do with Christmas coming up and increased rotation. And I'm scared that Costa will get a YC as soon as I get him in (I would have gotten him ages ago if it wasn't for the 4 YC's)

I'd try and keep Gündogan for one more week to see what the situation really is, he did too well and was talked up too much before the break, he was rested because he played a lot for Germany while others didn't play as much (Aguero)

Pep said Yaya would help with rotation, he's a versatile player so doesn't mean he's in direct competition.

If he doesn't start at Burnley than we'll know to jump off quickly, if he does start then for his price he's still a decent option.

I think Pep also turned to Toure to help combat Palace aerial threat - that's why he used Kompany over Stones.

But Toure is not available in CL so there's every chance he'll play the matches around the remaining ties.

I reckon Toure starts vs Burnley for me, Gundogan in CL and vs Chelsea in GW14, then Toure in GW15 vs Leicester after the Celtic game.

I think they are almost like for like, sadly, - Toure less defensive and used vs teams that need a stronger physical presence. Gundogan a better all-round player with defensive cover so used against tougher opponents.

It's possible, we'll see this week when everyone is available and no International hangover to consider.

Must admit, when I read his comments about helping to rotate, the first person I thought of who could see his minutes reduced was Silva, he's not getting any younger and not sure his body can cope playing every game anymore, the fact that he was benched for Palace confirmed that he's not guaranteed to start every game and maybe they'll try and pick and chose the bigger games for him (they have options) as he's still a key man but will maybe nurse him through the season, this week will tell all.

Yaya and Silva in MF is quite an old set of legs.

Play Amat, if he doesn't start Wilson can come off the bench. Swansea desperately need a result now and i can see them tightening at the back.

Yeah the only thing putting me off is that Palace score more than most at the bottom of the table - only blanked twice this year.

I hear you. If Swansea needs to get out of the mess that they are currently in, they need to produce sooner rather than later. I believe a home game against Palace is a decent platform. I'm not optimistic of Wilson's chances against an Arsenal defence.

Is moving an Arsenal defender to a Chelsea one a bit pointless? I have Kos as a premium, and reluctant to add a second premium defender...looking at the fixtures over the next ten:

Arsenal: BOU whm STO eve mci WBA CPL bou swa BUR WAT
Chelsea: TOT mci WBA sun cpl BOU STO tot lei HUL liv

      Thoughts?

I think Arsenal has good fixtures and is worth keeping Kosc, but Chelsea are not letting Goals in, irrespective of the fixture, can't you have both? If not, then if you want a Chelsea Defender, get after the City game.

Have the money to do Lovren > Alonso

But that means to get Costa/Kane for Lukaku I would need a serious 4th mid downgrade (currently Walcott)

wanted to find out if mids or strikers are scoring better and which formation, either 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 might be better...took 48points as cut off (av 4 points/week) and looking at their current value without being too statistical..on face value, mids are performing better and providing valuable returns than strikers..would the debate of using 3-5-2 return these few weeks? Would it be more worthwhile to put more of our cash in mids?

      Midfielders (players and current value)
      (i) 48 - 55 pts: 10 players (5.0 - 9.6m)
      (ii) 56 - 65 pts: 6 players (5.4 - 9.1m)
      (iii) 66 - 86 pts: 6 players (4.9 - 11.3m)

Strikers - (players and current value)
      (i) 48 - 55pts: 2 players (6.8 - 11.1m)
      (ii) 56 - 65 pts: 1 players (13.2m)
      (iii) 66 - 86 pts: 3 players (7.4 - 10.5m)

I don't think WBA will make too many shots so less save points for Heaton.

So it will either be 2 or 6 of Heaton...I think B might win it, can see it as a 0-0 draw

      Here's my team with 1ft & 0.4itb

      Foster
      Alonso, Fuchs, Holebas
      Hazard, Coutinho (c), Firmino, Capoue
      Aguero (vc), Costa, Lukaku

      Jaku, Amat, Pieters, Allen

I'm happy playing Capoue (Stoke h) as he might get on a bit of a roll now & the player rating report I read said he got forward more vs Leic so maybe he'll keep it up. Will keep Allen for the gw14 game vs Burnley h as by then he could be back in the no. 10 role. Thought about selling Fuchs but with Midd h & Sun a in the next 2 games he's got to get a cs surely. I'm happy keeping Lukaku (Sou a, MU h, Wat a) for the next 3. As a big fan of taking hits I can't even think of a ft I should do this week.
However if I was going to go hit crazy & abandon logic I would do this for a -8 hit:
Lukaku, Allen, Capoue out - Anichebe, Walcott, Siggy in

      (a) Be dull & save ft or
      (b) Do the -8 hit.

Thoughts & thanks if you read the whole post haha.
