Two draws but only one team are happy with their lot from the second night of European action this week. Man City celebrate, Arsenal get Euro deja vu – here’s how it all came about.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1 Man City 1

David Silva’s (8.7) equaliser right on half-time sent City into the last 16 of the Champions League with a match to spare.

It was only the Spaniard’s second club goal of a consistently unproductive season thus far, in direct contrast to the man who set it up, Kevin De Bruyne (10.8), who has now either scored or assisted in his last five Man City matches in all competitions.

Pep Guardiola made four changes from Saturday’s win at Crystal Palace, with Silva, John Stones (5.0), Ilkay Gundogan (5.8) and Jesus Navas (6.2) all coming in.

City’s defence – never the most stable of units this season – was further disrupted when Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) failed to travel having picked up a knock.

Fernandinho (5.4) was dismissed late on for a debatable second yellow card, forcing Bacary Sagna (5.3) to forego the total rest Guardiola might have had in mind for him during a final 20+ minutes in which both teams played with a man down.

While City’s defensive concerns pile up, the sight of Sergio Aguero (13.2) limping in the final few minutes was a little worrying for his 46.3% ownership.

In a bizarre last four minutes, Fernando (4.7) stood waiting to replace the striker, only for his team-mates to keep the ball, and their star man on the pitch, all the way through to the final whistle.

Guardiola was quick to banish concerns on Aguero’s plight post-match.

“Yeah, maybe he had a kick – but he is okay.”

So far, there are no reports to suggest the contrary ahead of the Gameweek 13 visit to Burnley.

Guardiola was generally happy with the result, offering us Fantasy managers re-assurance that, as of now, the domestic campaign becomes the single priority.

“We have qualification in the pocket until February, so now we can focus finally on one competition, the Premier League, and we can be so satisfied.”

City’s final group match is now a dead rubber, which will allow Guardiola to rest key players ahead of a tricky December 10 trip to Leicester City.

As for the weekend teamsheet, it’s perhaps Gundogan’s start that appears the most at risk given that a reborn Yaya Toure will be pushing for a recall having be excluded from Guardiola’s Champions League squad. Toure would seem likely to start at Turf Moor, then, with the German, or perhaps even Silva, under threat.

Man City XI: Bravo, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Stones, Kolarov, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Silva, Jesus Navas, Aguero, Sterling (Sagna 67).
Subs not used: Caballero, Fernando, Nolito, Sane, Clichy, Iheanacho.

Arsenal 2 Paris St Germain 2

While City players celebrated finishing second in their group, Arsenal failed to take their chance to avoid doing just that – and may again live to regret it.

Arsene Wenger had called on his players to get the job done against PSG, only for the visitors to do a job on the Gunners, out-shooting their hosts 14-5 in a match they controlled for large periods.

The Arsenal boss made four changes from the side that drew at Old Trafford.

Chief among them was striker Olivier Giroud (8.8) starting, with Theo Walcott (7.8) dropping to the bench and Alexis Sanchez (11.3) shunted back to the flank – a scenario that both Walcott and Sanchez owners will now fear could become a regular occurrence.

Giroud is certainly in scoring form. His penalty against PSG was his fifth goal in as many matches in all competitions for the Gunners. In a decidedly ironic twist, the spot kick was earned by Sanchez.

Arsenal’s second on the night came from a Marco Verratti own goal, but they couldn’t keep their lead as Alex Iwobi (5.8) contrived to head past David Ospina (4.8) when the keeper looked to have a PSG effort well covered.

That pair, together with Kieran Gibbs (4.8) coming in for Nacho Monreal (5.9) at left back, were the other changes Wenger had made to the team.

The Gunners still have a slight chance of winning the group, but it involves the French champions slipping up at home to a Ludogrets Razgrad outfit beaten 6-0 at The Emirates.

Wenger must now decide whether to field a full-strength side away at Basel in the faint hope that PSG come a cropper.

It seems rather more likely that he will rest key men ahead of the Gameweek 15 visit of Stoke City, but doubts will remain right up to the European match on December 6 – the worst-case scenario for FPL bosses trying to manage the Arsenal resources in their squads.

As for the weekend, Walcott’s owners will be hoping for a recall after Wenger confirmed he was benched due to a minor toe injury:

‘Walcott has a slight problem with his toe. I have plenty of players who are fresh and available and need games. So i try to rotate a little bit and keep the balance depending upon the opposition and that’s why I brought Giroud back in.’

Meanwhile, Sanchez’ remaining 22% ownership will be willing their man to return to the central striker role as he bids to end a miserable run at the Emirates: only one of his six goals this season has arrived in home matches.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Jenkinson (Oxlade-Chamberlain 81), Mustafi, Koscielny, Gibbs, Ramsey, Coquelin (Walcott 80), Sánchez, Özil, Iwobi (Xhaka 78), Giroud.
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Monreal, Elneny.

    Pickford
    Morgan, Clyne, Holebas
    Sanchez, Firmino, Coutinho, Sigurdson
    Costa, Aguero(c), Austin

    Jaku, Evans, Amat, Fletcher

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Time For Giroud?

Three goals in three league games, all from the subs bench, plus another last night suggests that Giroud is not to be ignored.

But will he start? And does it even matter if he can do that amount of damage in just part of a match.

I’m finding myself strangely drawn to the Frenchman this Gameweek, not enough for the armband, but he looks a great differential for the next three gameweeks.

    But what of Sanchez?

Here’s some interesting research via Reddit on how the Chilean fares when his bearded team mate is fielded up top.

    https://m.reddit.com/r/FantasyPL/comments/5ay7fd/how_alexis_sanchez_performs_with_and_without/?compact=true

What are your Arsenal options for this Gameweek and their short kind run of games?

Walcott an option, despite his wife now being 11 months pregnant?

    Sanchez worth his price tag?

Is the consistency of Ozil worth tapping into, even though he has one of those annoying - bit too expensive price tags?

Giroud, who is on pens with Cazorla absent, tempting you?

Or are you going commando and opting for no gunners?

    1. Pochecinno
      • 10 Years

With all the doubt you have just cast it seems that opting for a gunner is actually the commando position 😛

      I'm tempted for a -4.

I just reckon prior to BOURNE is as good as ever. could be a 12 pointer.

      Next week Kun->Kane.

      Then wait on Costa YC.

          I'm thinking Allen/Lukaku->Siggy/Giroud -4

          Kun/Au$stin/Giroud

Next week Kun->Kane...then wait on Costa YC situation.

Worth monitoring Giroud than for BOURN/wh/STOKE.

If it turns out bad I will have funds to get one of Costa/Kun back in for Giroud.

Would kick myself if I don't and he scores well.

I've forgone Arsenal cover last week when I sold Sanchez for Hazard. I'm not that worried about having any of the options above as they don't seem to be whipping anyone at the moment. If I was going to dabble I'd probably go Ozil as his output seems to increase when Ollie G is in the team

I have only become more confident in my swap for Hazard, after seing Giroud starting up front. But will he start in the league? I am not entirely certain, but he will play a role.

Whether or not GIroud starts up front, I don't think Sanchez is worth his price tag. He has shown time and time again, that he cannot be trusted with the (C). Too inconsistent!

just not for me, but he is more attractive without Santi when he's on pens granted

that said, he is a flat track bully so I would consider for a one week punt if you you're looking to shift lukaku

but Sanchez and Ozil are still way above him for me

Ozil is being utterly overlooked. I plan to downgrade Sanchez to him soon to afford Harry.

Lukaku to Giroud might work out well but I've got Ibra on my mind!
The ARS player I have is Walcott and reluctant to get rid for now (friendly price). But I do have a feeling Ozil is gonna come good so I will be monitoring him closely with a view of getting him in for Walcott if I decide to free up Aguero funds in the coming GWs (a bit up in the air at the moment)

Sanchez never been as good when Giroud is in the team.

I would swap Sanchez for Hazard or KDB but not the right week to do it.

I think Giroud is decent value but 1 bad week and he could be back on the bench again with Sanchez up front.

Also it'd be nice if hot topics didn't always show up with regards to a dilemma you were facing with your team personally. A lot more interesting discussions just don't show up in the hot topics. Just what you come up with for the day and a random post you say (more often than not on the same page) on the day.

If you see something that would make a good hot topic please do flag up. Even better start a good discussion yourself and let us know about it via the flag button.

Also I tend to give a personal touch to a hot topic as its more conversational. But with Giroud scoring last night and lots of people mentioning him on Reddit, this site it is an issue that many are facing. It's also broad as well looking across Arsenal - asking whether Sanchez is in your team, or Walcott etc. I have no personal view on those players as neither are in my side.

I have Sanchez but I am growing increasingly exasperated and I want Hazard. However, with Sanchez again BOU and Hazard against Spurs, I dont know if this is the week to do it.

I will keep my FT this week, and then next week get in Hazard and then looking for Arsenal coverage elsewhere, either Arnie > Walcott or Lukaku > Giroud, depending on the weekend results.

I think Giroud could be worth a punt, if you've got a FT to burn, for this weekend's fixture.
If Walcott's available at the weekend -toe is better and his wife keeps legs crossed - I wonder if Sanchez is due a rest? He picked up the injury with Chile, two long flights, then two massive games on his return. Bournemouth at home is an "easier" game on paper and Wenger did say he was going to try and look after him a bit more this season.

      two things:

      1. I'm leaning to getting him this week. Not as captain, but few are more consistent than he when he starts.
      2. Giroud starting almost always means Ozil becomes a much better pick, and probably more valuable than sanchez.

I think it would be pretty interesting to see the goals the type of goals conceded by Bournemouth, Stoke, WHW. If they are largely set piece based or by headers. I think the entire purpose of Giroud having in the start lineup is to hold the ball and pass it to sanchez or someone and make further runs.

I do not see giroud scoring quite a lot from the leg but I would want to see how the teams mentioned above have conceded goals.

Giroud does seem a great option right now but its the lack of gametime and uncertainty regarding the start which poses a threat. Never the less, I think Wenger would be cautious with Sanchez. He is definitely concerned about him burning out.

I think I wouldn't take a punt this week. Its too unpredictable. I do have Sanchez in my team and going to stick with that atleast for this week.

Stoke have scored in 8 of their 9 away games
I don't think it's that obvious that Holebas can't beat Mcauley just because he some set piece duties.
Hull are arguably the worst team in the league and I think stoke will score Vs Watford,

Mata gets subbed alot, isn't on penalties, is in a ManU side that plays a few days prior in Europe and has unpredictable form. He's risky but a good risk.

Sigurdsson is the mainstay penalty taker in a Swansea side that is poor. But he gets consistent points. This weekend he faces a Palace side that has no clean sheets this season. Plus long term his fixtures are great.

I done Allen, Lukaku, Rashford, Aguero for Siggy, Anichebe, Costa, Kane for -8. I'm terrified but invigorated. I was planning on doing it over 2/3 weeks but had a moment of total abandon in the early hours and now have The Fear.
