Next up this Friday evening, itโ€™s time to settle down to our usual pre-Gameweek members article.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the main contenders in this weekโ€™s Captain Poll, before assessing the Opta numbers and Rate My Team rankings and suggesting some differentials to help solve your armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Harry Kane is the standout captaincy candidate for Gameweek 14, earning 37% of the votes cast for Tottenham Hotspurโ€™s home clash with Swansea City.

Subject to more transfers in than any forward this week, Kane has bagged three goals in as many appearances since returning from an ankle injury.

Heโ€™s served up 29 points in four outings at the Lane and faces a defence that has conceded at least three goals in four of six fixtures under Bob Bradley.

Team-mate Christian Eriksen finally opened his account for the season away to Chelsea last weekend, though a series of inconsistent displays means he is backed by just 1% this time out.

Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have been tussling for second spot all week after both scored twice in the previous round of fixtures.

Of the two, Agueroโ€™s prospects are a little trickier as Man City host a Chelsea defence that has conceded one goal in seven Gameweeks.

The Argentine has been surprisingly lacklustre at the Etihad so far, scoring just twice in front of his own fans compared to eight strikes on the road.

Sanchez heads to West Ham looking for a fourth double-figure haul on his travels, having delivered at least 10 points away to Watford, Hull and Sunderland.

A trip to Selhurst Park sees Charlie Austin head the chasing pack.

Southamptonโ€™s top scorer is a clear differential option, with just 4% backing him against a defence that have yet to keep a clean sheet. Palaceโ€™s 5-4 capitulation at Swansea boosts the prospects of the in-form Austin, who has netted six times in the last nine Gameweeks.

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are backed by a mere 2% and 1% respectively.

The Belgian admittedly struggled on the road, scoring just one away goal to date, whereas Costa has been far more reliable, netting in all but one of his six away appearances.

Fantasy faith in Liverpool seems to have dropped off as a result of Philippe Coutinhoโ€™s injury absence.

Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane earn just 2% and 1% of the votes cast respectively ahead of a trip to Bournemouth.

Back in full training, the Brazilian is expected to shrug off a minor calf problem in time for Sundayโ€™s encounter.

He boasts better recent form on the road, scoring in two of his last three away outings, whereas Mane has failed to find the net outside of Anfield since Gameweek 1.

Still owned by 25% of FPL managers, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has five goals in as many outings across all competitions after netting twice in United’s midweek cup win over West Ham.

Up next, he visits an Everton backline that have kept out their opponents just once in the last nine Gameweeks.

Anyone read Klopp's comments on Firmino as a not-so-subtle dig at Sturridge?

“Roberto trained yesterday, too. That’s important. There’s still a little bit of pain – it’s painful but not that serious. When you can deal with the pain, then everything is fine. He is quite a tough guy, so he came through the session yesterday. Again, we have to see how he reacts and that’s it.”

Tbh I'm quite fed up of nobody simply telling Sturridge to man up. He's injury prone, I accept that, but half of his battle is in his head and it is hampering his career, especially when he's entering the sweet 27-30 age gap for a striker.

What makes you think it's in his head?
Is it just a hunch or has there been something said?

Volume of injuries down the years and various comments from Klopp that suggest there's nothing seriously wrong with him.

Most players play through pain. Some opt not to

              I still don't get it.
Basically Klopp's saying he's soft, or he doesn't want to play.
              Both seem unlikely to me.

Not soft as in unable to take a tackle, he can do that I reckon.

I think he simply has it in his head that every slight twinge, every little issue is actually heralding a massive, serious injury.

                  9 years, 4 months ago

This exactly. He doesn't want to or doesn't have the confidence to play through pain. Louis Saha was reportedly the same way. Always crying off with little injuries. Don't forget they have objective data from scans etc as well as what the player tells them, so they can see when something is serious vs not.

You just have to look at Sanchez playing through a "small tear" in his hamstring and scoring 4 goals in two games for Chile and Arsenal.

Klopp is contrasting that South American mentality of Firmino with Sturridge's weak mentality

And that's the point of the post. The words he used were pretty much the same except he finished it off by saying he needed to learn how to handle pain. The opposite of what he's said about Firmino.

            Good shout by Sharpe Shuffle.

I've had this issue with Danny boy for a long time.

He has even said he thinks he's "inherited" his injury issues from his father, it all reads like someone who is paranoid about an injury. When you get like that, funny enough, you tend to experience more injuries in my view.

I remember last year or maybe the year before they had him over in the States and did some operation on some malformed or jagged part of bone in his hip which some heralded as the end of all his problems. Back then, I wondered if this was maybe more a placebo procedure than anything else. Still wonder if it was.

pretty sure he has a mental condition. i don't mean a serious debilitating one, but one in which he has an unnatural fear of injury. a hypochondriac of sorts

I certainly think there are hypochondriacal elements to him. Perhaps that's unfair, because I don't know the guy, but it isn't like someone like Aguero who is injury prone but they tend to be very bad injuries. Kun doesn't pull out of a team because his calf is a bit tight. Sturridge gets these kinds of problems often between any bigger injuries.

to be honest, he's a guy who's impressed me in newspaper interviews a couple of times. seems a good lad etc. but an issue is an issue. that said, i'm really only speculating and going on soundbites from managers and that. it's a real shame tho, whatever it is

Spurs, Arsenal,Chelsea,Utd and Soton have some tasty fixtures over the next 10 GWs.A case can be made for 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 instead of 3 at the back with mostly cheap options. I can see the premium defenders outscoring most of the 5-7m midfielders who have shown no consistency over the season (apart from Siggy recently). Also defenders tend to be much more nailed than midfielders during the Xmas fixtures. Anyone tempted? I am going with Kosc,Walker,Alonso at the moment and will get Cedric for Pieters next week. I can't see the likes of Fer, Allen, Snoddy, Phillips, Redmond, Capoue etc keep pace with most of the premium defenders that offer attacking potential and baps as well.

              4-4-2 could work. I think 4-3-3 is a mistake.

Why? Lots of good forward options at the moment.

Yeah but we've seen that midfielders have kinda been outscoring forwards. I just think 3 is too little.

            After this GW:
            A) Walker to Alonso
            B) Smith to Cedric

I really want Alonso, but Walker has 2 more easy home games and i need to get rid of Smith who has a dreadful list of fixtures.
            What you guys think?

            Heaton
            Fuchs - McAuley - Lovren
            Sanchez - Firmino - Zaha - Hazard
            Costa - Austin - Aguero

            1. Philips
            2. Fer
            3. can
            4. Watmore
            5. Zaha
            6. Someone else?

Can is the one that you need to keep your eye on.

                To paraphrase my earlier post...

                A - Defoe/ Benteke to Kane/ Austin
                B - Benteke/ Wally to Kane/ Pedro
                C - Benteke/ Wally to Kane/ Lallana
                D - Benteke/ Sanchez to Kane/ Hazard
                E - Benteke/ Bertrand to Kane/ Cedric
                F - Benteke/ Holebas to Kane/ Dawson

All for a -4. Actually thinking E or F, but opinions welcome...
