With a break in our open to all Fantasy Premier League cup competition during the midweek fixtures, we spend some time this evening to see who has made it through to fifth round, which takes place during Gameweek 17 this coming weekend.

A reminder that, for this latest contest, there are more than £1,000 worth of prizes for UK based entrants courtesy of our partner FanDuel, as well as £350 in Amazon vouchers to the top three managers at the end of the competition.

In addition the highest scoring manager each round wins a £30 FanDuel credit, with community regular Moin earning this prize after his 65 point Gameweek 15 haul. He next faces msq22 in round five.

The next four highest scoring managers in round four win a £10 FanDuel credit. These will be handed out to Pinky Unites, who scored 63, DJDave1979, who scored 61 along with twobitgooner, and BC1, Bashvilla, Hagop, who all hit the 60 point mark.

The highest placed manager left in the competition is 216 ranked Bacuna Matata, who along with Pink Unites, won a £30 FanDuel voucher for the top highest score back in the third round.

The unfortunate manager to face this early frontrunner to win the competition is lowlifegimpe, who is ranked 337,555.

In a closely fought contest, our only remaining Fantasy Football Scout staff representative, TorresMagic, has made it through to round five, after squeezing past Zambhino10 by just a single point.

The moderator has another tough encounter in store when he takes on Smooth Rossi, who at 6,687 in the overall rankings is more than 7,000 places above him.

Other eye catching ties taking place in round five include Funkyav’s clash with Big Phil Soccer Team and Cobberlsnz taking on Bash Villa, who incidentally sent me packing back in the first round.

The fourth round results can be found via this link, while the full fifth round draw can be found here.

Good luck to those still involved and if you would like more information on the schedule and prizes click this link.

I have the same situation. I think if I put those 3 in order it would be Payet, Eriksen, and Firmino a distant third. Firmino next 2, at MID, at EVE, are not great. Payet has two easy home fixtures and looks good; so does Eriksen. The difference is on Spurs Alli, Son, possibly Dembele, full backs on crosses get returns with Kane hogging goals. At West Ham it all goes through Payet. Payet then.

Is 'cover' an illustion in the game and does it cloud our judgement?
FPL is a game about individual players, is it not? So many posts read something like: definitely get X.but if you have no Kane get Y.
Is 'cover' an illustion in the game and does it cloud our judgement?
An example would be my team this week. I have no Kane or no Spurs mids. I made the calculated decision (right or wrong) to stick with Ibra & Costa for the Christmas fixtures (hence no room for Harry). I did consider a Spurs mid this week (due to those two fix.) but don't think they have an indiviual in that midfield to match Payet (so went for him instead).
A lot of posters on here have said things like - 'it is crazy to go without Spurs attacking cover for those fixtures'- but it's a game concerning indivdual players, right 😉

Yes and no. If you get players from teams that score a lot of goals you got a bigger chance your player gets involved in the goals than if you get a player from for instance West Brom. But proven players like Siggy etc will always deliver even if his team suckx.

There's some validity to defensive cover as defenders score or fail as a team.

Attacking cover is a myth IMO for the reasons you've stated. Player X scores or fails regardless of what player Y from the same club does.

Plenty of folk disagree with this. I guess it's a matter of opinion

    4. Sharpe Shuffle
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

This type of comment I've never understood "definitely get X.but if you have no Kane get Y"

It's like it's a way to simplify the decision but it doesn't make any sense to me

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

I feel if you're trying to choose between 2 players from different clubs but with very similar form, ease of fixtures and reliability, you would tend to go for the one from the club you have no coverage in.

        1. Sharpe Shuffle
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

But why? Because it "feels" right? The potential of each attacking player to score is totally unaffected by the other players you own

          1. Cok3y5murf
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

Hence why I stressed that it's only when they have similar form, fixtures and reliability. And this is so that in the event one team does not do well, you have cover from the other team as well (and since both players have similar points potential, they are going to match each other according to you)

For the most part, coverage is an illusion but it matters slightly imo. It really depends on the players. For example, Mane, Firmino and Coutinho all covered each other in Liverpool before because they all shared goals and no one was significantly better/worse than another. And Liverpool were scoring goals for fun, so 'cover' from that team was wise.

But on the other hand, Walcott does not cover Sanchez. He is just not the same level of quality and cannot explode as much as Sanchez. I don't think Eriksen/Alli cover Kane either. And Costa and Hazard partially cover each other, but not as much as Liverpool mids.

And I agree that when it's player vs player like Payet vs Eriksen, all you have to consider is each player and his fixtures. Cover doesn't matter there.

Hmm, 'cover' is good to have from teams that scores a lot of goals, or defences that keeps a lot of clean sheets. Its so trendy to say that cover is an illusion.

      1. Sharpe Shuffle
        • 10 Years

Would you get Hendo to cover Pool attack? Or Kante to cover Chelsea?

of course not. 'Cover' is not about picking the player with the least point potential from a team.

    8. The Bandit
      • 15 Years

It's the word 'cover' that is daft, not the concept. There are times (like now) where for instance it would be daft imo to have no attacking players from Spurs or Chelsea but they have to be the right ones. Son and Moses for instance would be 'cover' for the sake of 'cover' but having none of Kane, Eriksen, Alli, Hazard or Costa would be just plain madness

      1. FPLtfs
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 9 Years

this. Alli is good 'cover' with Spurs upcoming fixtures, because he will most likely get a goal or an assist if Spurs win by 4-5 goals.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Not if you're trying to choose between Alli and someone better from a team you already have cover in. He's still going to get you more points than Alli.

Fair point. Get them both 😉 My point is that if you can not afford, lets say Payet for the next fixtures, then Antonio might works as a 'cover', because he most likely will get you something from that fixtures. Its based on fixtures and team form. Of course, if Zaha scores a hatty against United, and West Ham draws 1-1 its easy to say in hindsight that 'cover' was uneccesary. As I stated earlier; 'cover' is good to have from teams that scores a lot of goals, or defences that keeps a lot of clean sheets.

            Wouldn't say THAT obvious.

Odds to score are 3.2 for Siggy and 4.0 for Allen. And as I will be playing at least to WBA defenders, I am kind of hoping he will blank 😉

Used my FT to go Austin--> Llorente

    De Gea (Jacupovic)
    Walker Daniels McAuley (Kingsley Lenihan)
Siggy Sanchez Hazard Manė (De Roon)
    Costa Defoe Llorente

For 0.7 ITB. Any transfer worth a -4 at this point?

Giving Antonio another whirl at 6.7 - might as well with those fixtures, plus getting him in for Firmino freed up the moolah for me to bring Costa back in again.

Just a thought. Step in pep's shoes.
U are loosing big, your midfield is not providing your striker, u have next game in 3 days and ihenacho is your only striker available. Of curse u sub him and give him a rest. IMO

Problem is, they only started to look dangerous (and scored twice) after Nolito came on and played the 'false 9' role

    Damn price rises.

I am .1 of going ideal trade of Snodgrass to Erikson.

If Firmino drops tonight i will lose sell value on him.

Anyone with any ideas? I am thinking about saving as i am second in money league and 1st has Firmino too.

    Heaton
    Alonso / McAuley / Cedric
    Hazard / Firmino / Sigurðsson / Snodgrass
    Kane / Costa / Defoe

Pickford / Pieters / De Roon / Friend

His stats are pretty poor. It's Erikson or no one from Spurs mids imo.

Yep, I'd prefer Eriksen too. Still, Alli is a goal threat is he gets his act together.

Am I the only one dreading a Firmino double-digit backlash if I sell him on this week?

Inside the top 11k, winning most ML's and altho not scoring he's imminent for 2/3..big games = big performance and v everton in Derby and away v boro I just think he could cause huge headaches (for us sellers!!)

My team currently is: (All Out Attack being played I think!!!)

    Valdes (Heaton)

    Stones Pieters (Fuchs, Kone, Friend)

    Firmino Siggy Mane Eriksen Fletcher

    Tekkers Kane (C) Lukaku

    2.1 ITB 1 FT

Feelings are I've good cover in Eriksen and Kane.
Strikers in good form despite Costa hurting me every week since I binned him when reached 4YC's. Defense weakish but intentional as CS's a lottery except Chelsea and expensive.

    Options are:

    A) save FT and keep AOA option
    B) Fuchs > Rose
    C) Join the masses and go Firmino > Payet as already have Eriksen and Siggy
    D) Overkill Spurs and go Firmino > Alli and double up with Eriksen + Kane.

Humour me please with plenty of feedback, Firmino exploding when my H2H opponent having him also is a big worry but Payet/ City midfielder looks appealing.

    Cheers all...
