Dugout Discussion – Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Gameweek 17 begins with Chelsea attempting to maintain their 10-game winning streak at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.

There’s plenty on show for Fantasy Football managers, with Eden Hazard a confirmed starter having missed the midweek victory at Sunderland.

Sold by more than 130,000 ahead of today’s deadline, they will be fidgeting uncomfortably throughout and hoping that Hazard continues to simmer in away matches. He’s scored just two goals in seven road trips so far, compared to six in eight at Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa has had no such issues, home or away. He goes into today’s encounter off the back of just his third blank of the season on Wednesday – he is yet to go two Gameweeks without a goal or an assist this season.

For Palace, both Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke offer the major threat to a Chelsea defence that has conceded just two goals over their ten successive wins.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Costa to Ibra seems the obvious move. Ibra has great fixtures anyway and the casuals will sell Costa in droves. I've been caught out before thinking I could ride a short ban and lost too much team value.

    Not too concerned about the Costa yellow. As previously posted I thought Costa would be benched for one if those close together games.

    He struggles to finish games sometimes at the best of times.

    Bottomed: Is Azpi a better choice than Alonso? Seems a differential around these parts and hoovers up all 3 baps whenever it's a low scoring affair. Chelsea don't look like scoring much at the moment

      Yeah, to be honest I'd expect Azpi's bonus points to more than match Alonso's odd goal or assist. If I was buying now I'd get Azpi, but as it is I'm happy with Alonso.

      Azpi and VVD are definitely up there

      For me Bellerin has to make the cut purely for his efforts getting from one side of the pitch to the other to make a block/tackle. Absolutely love seeing that from him

      Warning: this post contains lots of stats (courtesy of FPL Discovery)

      Of the top 10k at this stage last season, 43.6% had used TC, 47.3% had used BB and 46.4% had used AOA. This season the figures are much lower with 24.9% for TC, 19.9% for BB and 24.3% for AOA.

      Also at this point last season 22.89% of the top 10k managers were in their first season with only 3.28% having a previous top 10k finish. This season only 13.18% of the top 10k are ‘debutant’ managers with 7.49% having experienced a top 10k finish.

      Having said that there is far less of a ‘template’ this season, amongst the top 10k Costa has the highest ownership at 85.6% whereas last season there were four players with higher than 87% ownership (Mahrez, Ozil, Lukaku and Vardy). Last season there were only 23 players with 10%+ ownership (in a 3-8-8-4 formation) whereas this season there are 31 (4-9-11-7).

      From these stats it looks like a climb through the rankings will be far tougher than last year as there are less ‘casuals’ who have blown their chips amongst the top ranks, but there is an opportunity in the fact there isn’t such a set template.

        Nice. Us early buyers will have to keep. There's only Sanchez and Costa that can do that to us so far...even Walker and Alonso have alternatives for a straight swap.
