His biggest tally of the season. A third successive double-figure total. Sixty-eight points in his last seven Gameweek starts.

We can’t deny the numbers – Zlatan Ibrahimovic is delivering and refusing to leave the door ajar for a cast of competitors up front.

Both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero are now back from the cold and, while we will doubtless begin measuring up for the surgery to install one of that pair alongside the Swede, it currently seems unthinkable to drop the Manchester United striker.

Having scored or assisted 16 of 26 goals scored while he’s been on the pitch, Ibrahimovic has been involved in 61% of United’s goals. While Jose Mourinho’s men have yet to hit the heights to suggest that they are a true attacking force, that’s a difficult statistic to ignore.

Zlatan’s fixtures remain strong and, seemingly classed as “undroppable” by Mourinho; there appears little or no counter argument. Ibrahimovic increased by 0.3 in price ahead of today’s deadline and, again, he’s already ranked second only to Costa for transfers, with another hike looming.

If we wish to opt for two heavyweights in our forward lines, our decision currently appears to create a head-to-head between Costa and Aguero: two strikers who present two very different scenarios.

Chelsea are undoubtedly pacesetters supreme. Their current form and confidence cannot be questioned and, while the fixture list remains demanding, it would be brave to underestimate Antonio Conte’s side against any opposition.

Manchester City’s fixtures are also testing, but they will go to Anfield on New Year’s Eve still in stuttering form.

The Gameweek 17 victory over Arsenal looked priceless in re-establishing their status as title challengers but the performance in tonight’s 3-0 win at Hull City was, for long periods, still unconvincing.

Aguero may be able to circumvent any malaise and doubts – arguably, he could flick the switch and re-invigorate City’s season.

However, at 12.8, he costs a princely sum which would surely restrict flexibility in midfield or defence. In many ways, Aguero now represents a gamble.

That seems an unthinkable and unlikely sentence to write on these pages. The Argentine has, for so long, been a mainstay of the Fantasy Football Scout community and an asset that requires little thought or research. But that is surely no longer the case.

Having missed seven matches of the season through ill-discipline and, with the jury still out on Pep Guardiola’s side, the choice between Costa and Aguero is not straightforward and even appears weighted in the Chelsea man’s favour.

Currently 2.1 cheaper than Aguero, the Spaniard has shown unerring consistency and, crucially, could allow us to retain significant funds in midfield, or even opt for a Blues pairing in defence.

But, as we’ve seen, the landscape can shift so quickly. With just a matter of days before Gameweek 19, our opinions and plans have to remain flexible.

Midfield assets like Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez, in particular, are under constant pressure to perform now that Aguero is back in the game.

Hazard’s spot-kick against Bournemouth may have kept talk of an exodus subdued for now, although two goals in six Gameweek starts is still not enough to justify his selection now that Costa has returned to the equation. We need more from Hazard against Stoke City.

As for Sanchez, he hit a post and fired in more attempts than any other player in Monday’s matches but has now produced just a single goal since his heralded hat-trick at the London Stadium back in Gameweek 14.

Arsenal still appear to be struggling at the Emirates without Santi Cazorla in the double pivot. That needs to change for the visit of Big Sam’s Crystal Palace: we perhaps need to see Sanchez back in the striker’s role. We certainly need him back in the points to stave off any talk of exit plans.

Again, such a knee-jerk reaction seems unthinkable when we look back on the scramble for the Chilean’s services only last month.

But that’s typical of this campaign and, for tonight at least, the only current certainty appears to be relentlessly providing and scoring goals for Manchester United.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have been pretty good on captaincy. I seem better at it on Sky for some reason. Maybe it is just the number of different captains you can have in week. Gaston Ramirez a couple of weeks ago was a huge one as I think that was a bit of a differential

KDB being sold by the bucket full ahead of Aguero's return....madness.

KDB has hit the woodwork five times this season, that's more than any other player. If only a couple of those had made their way in then we would have a very different opinion of him.

Sell Peters. Stoke aren't a Pulis team. They've been culpable of conceding goals too easily.

Watford are much the same but holebas is more attack minded and on s9me set pieces.

Keep Lorenz,. Pool have looked better defensively and he pops up with goals every now and then.

    Squad:

    Grant. Pickford.
    Alonso. Jones. McAuley. Francis. Kingsley.
    Eriksen. Hazard. Siggy. Sanchez. Phillips.
    Ibra. Costa. Origi.

    A. Leave it as its set up now

I'll put it in writing. Selling Kane now is a waste of time and a transfer.

Costa's frozen price is quite handy for my mad hit a week plan. Gonna call in at Lukaku vs Hull for next week and get Costa after the next deadline.

The maths then allows me to keep Silva vs Bur at home and Tekkers vs Swa at home the week after.

    Sounds good to me...

Chelsea have Spurs away after the next GW. Not the best time to get him in. It's either this GW, or in 3 GWs IMO

I did Kane and Morrison to Benteke & Walcott, instead of Ibra & 4.2.
Wally didn't play and Benteke missed a pen. Brill.

Do I admit my mistake and go ANOTHER -4 to do:
Benteke & Wally / Eriksen to Ibra & cheapy, or stick to my guns?

    Heaton
    Walker Alonso Cedric
    Haz Sanchez Siggy Eriksen Wally
    Costa Benteke

    Pick, Amat, Anichebe, 3.9

Are Chelsea assets a sell high candidate after the Stoke game?

Next five post Stoke: tot, lei, HUL, liv, ARS.

Certainly a case for Diego to Kun, at least?

The fact that they're focusing solely on the league makes me want to keep them for the rest of the season regardless.

This is a good point. Plus, they are hot, and two of those games are very attractive. Arguably, chelsea score three or more against hull and Leicester, and Liverpool could also be a goal fest (or 1-1).

Leicester, Hull and Liverpool will all likely concede

This is the reason I haven't already tripled. One defender one attacker will do me for now.

flag gone = protected week or thereabouts

    2. Ruth_NZ

They only apply when a player goes straight from a red flag to clear. They are then price protected (can't rise or fall) for a period of time. I believe it is 8 days but there is nothing in the rules to say FPL couldn't decide to vary that.

Mkhi is the better pick imo. I'm sticking with the Pog though...great to watch.

That's one of the harder things in FPL. Get a player you really like to watch but maybe has less FPL potential or one that's less exciting but likely to score a few more points.

I'd like to think I do the latter but the truth is that I sometimes find excuses (selective rationalisations) to do the former.

One of my key aims in FPL is to like my team when I see it on the team selection page. I don't mind so much if that team then has a bad week.

Eriksen and Capoue to Mkhitaryan and Carrick sound good for free this week?

Would give a front 7 of:

    Sanchez, Hazard, Mikky, Siggy
    Zlatan, Costa, Origi

Slight fitness worries, and Lingard, Mata, Martial will always be nibbling if he gets a knock.

yes fair point, they are overloaded in those wing positions, but he looks too good to overlook, might have to take the gamble. Only other replacement I'd be looking at for eriksen is walcott who is not in the same league and also has fitness worries

I wouldnt restrict myself to having carrick as my 3rd Man u player.
There's points in their defence these next few games too.
Can you not afford De Roon at 4.4
