The return of Philippe Coutinho is the only positive for Liverpool on a night when Southampton’s EFL Cup profligacy might well come back to haunt them.

Southampton 1 Liverpool 0

Nathan Redmond (5.8) made the difference but could have made so much more, as Southampton failed to put away a listless Liverpool at St Mary’s in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

The visitors managed only two shots on target from 68% of the possession, while Redmond alone had five goal scoring chances to make the second leg at Anfield considerably more comfortable than it is likely to be now.

The midfielder did at least convert one of those opportunities, finishing smartly from a Jay Rodriguez (6.3) pass, and was perhaps unlucky to see a late effort hit the bar.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had a major consolation prize to soften the blow of defeat as Philippe Coutinho (8.2) returned after a month and a half out injured. The Brazilian was given a 30-minute cameo and immediately rejuvenated a Reds attack in which Roberto Firmino (8.5) and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) were toothless.

Firmino has struggled hugely during his compatriot’s absence, scoring just once, losing close to a quarter of a million Fantasy managers and dropping 0.3 in value. The 11.6% who have stood by him will now hope for a return to the form – and “false 9 role” – that harvested five goals and as many assists in the first 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Coutinho is still found in 14.7% of Fantasy squads, but he may well be eased back into action just as Liverpool face a mixed bag of upcoming fixtures, with tough matches against Man United, Chelsea and Spurs tempered by a trip to Hull City and the visit of Swansea City.

The Reds also have an FA Cup replay against Plymouth Argyle to resolve on January 18.

Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his weekend side, Claude Puel seven to his, with only Maya Yoshida (4.2), Virgil van Dijk (5.8), Ryan Bertrand (5.4) and Dusan Tadic (7.0) remaining from the Saints team that drew with Norwich.

Yoshida has now started the last four matches across all competitions and, with club skipper Jose Fonte (5.4) looking for an exit over the January transfer window, the Japan international could be one to consider over a relatively attractive run that involves trips to Burnley, Swansea and Sunderland and home matches with Leicester and West Ham.

However, Puel will surely be prioritising a replacement for Fonte should the defender be allowed to leave the club.

Elsewhere, continued rotation looks inevitable in the Saints’ squad as the fixtures continue to pile up. As well as their league commitments, they will have to replay against Norwich City on Wednesday (January 18) before the second leg of their Liverpool tie a week later and a potential FA Cup fourth round tie just three days after that.

For now, though, last night’s result gives them a slight advantage as they look to book a place at Wembley.

Clearly, the outcome of that second leg at Anfield will have major repercussions for FPL managers.

Should the Saints prevail and clinch a place in the final, their Gameweek 26 clash against Arsenal would need rescheduling and would almost certainly be moved to another Gameweek – something to consider for the 36.5% of FPL managers currently holding Alexis Sanchez (£11.9m).

If Liverpool can overcome that deficit, though, their Gameweek 26 trip to Leicester City would require rescheduling instead.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie (Hojbjerg 73), Romeu, Davis (Ward-Prowse 82), Tadic, Redmond, Rodriguez (Long 82).
Subs not used: Lewis, Stephens, McQueen, Sims.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner, Lucas, Can, Wijnaldum (Coutinho 61), Lallana, Firmino (Origi 83), Sturridge.
Subs not used: Mignolet, Gomez, Moreno, Stewart, Woodburn.

I'm still annoyed about Austin getting injured.

        Austin -> Kelichi -> Carroll -> Defoe

"Payet doesn't want to play for us but we won't sell him"

Just sell him and let him get on with his career. Yes, he's not behaving properly but don't destroy his career and deprive people of seeing him play, like WBA have done with Berahino.

Not sure I completely agree with this. He's under contract and they're likely paying him good money.

Have words with the manager / club but refusing to play is a bit much (if true).

the guy is nearly 30, its not like he was really on anybody's radar until west ham bought him. they knew he had potential but were aware of attitude issues and that scared them off. play until the seasons over but dont pull a stunt like this as if you were already one of the hottest properties in europe and west ham were lucky to get you. he was fortunate to find a suitor

Agreed, West Ham should have considered selling him last summer after the season he had.
Now the problem is that West Ham is not the same team this year with their poor form. Payet has lost motivation and wants to move away from the club.
I think a club should not stand against a player's will, they should respect players' decisions.
His value is going to drop now and West Ham will regret it.

How does this look for WC team?

      Hennesey (Grant)
Mustafi - Baines - Brunt (Chambers, Amat)
Sanchez - Alli - Coutinho - Phillips (de Roon)
      Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Defoe

      Exact money.

Last decision I think I have is whether to do Brunt/Baines to 4.4/Rose, isnt really a 4.4 I feel good about though.

Can't say that the Payet news surprises me. We had a whm fan on the other day asking our thoughts about them. I replied I got the sense something was wrong between Billic and his players.

The worrying thing for the fans is that these things don't happen in isolation. Payet will have friends at the club and quite quickly a clique can start to form.

Billic needs to chuck Payet out on his ear at the very first opportunity....none of this hanging around the club or dressing room lark. It's destructive.

I'm keeping Carroll for at least Palace game, I think he could be wanting to prove a big point and against Palace may be ideal. Also big differential now! Ake appearing in a blue shirt has thrown me like! I was all set for playing 4 at the back this week thinking he would be against Hull, now he is back at chelsea will he even play? (I didn't even know this until I looked at my team todya, not been on here for a week or so :-/)

        My plan was:

        Cech
        Alonso / Pieters / Ake / Friend
        Alli / Lallana / Sanchez (C)
        Carroll / Ibra / Aguero

        Jaku / Phillips / Capoue / Brunt

Bench Ake and bring in Phillips?
Leave as is and hope if he doesnt start he doesnt come on at all so Phillips would come on anyway?

No chance that happens. Who knows what the lines up will be like in future games though.

Guess I should sell Payet now, for who though?

        A) Alli
        B) Pogba
        C) downgrade to cheapie and get Luka for Anichebe for free

Alli/Pogba can be brought next week for Sigurdsson 😮

Still struggling with whether to play my WC.

I'm not bothered about OR and just look to beat previous seasons scores (and my ML) with a hit a week as usual. I've always played my Jan WC in Jan so to do anything else skews my results.

        I should play it really...mmmm.

Depends how many changes you want to make... If 7-8, then go for it

Not many really. Although i'm a bit too similar to my rival's teams for my liking...again...

Ah ok, since you are in lead, might aswell play WC and give them a chance to make it lil bit competitive 😛

Aye. I like my Costa Ibra front line but it's a bit pointless with my son having the same.

I wouldn't. Depends on your situation though. I presume you have cash leagues or mini leagues ? Could be a mistake if others utilise it using the DGW'S

Try to wriggle in two big hitters in defence as your differentials.
One of Baines or Rose definitely, maybe Daniels too since he attacks so much.
