The return of Philippe Coutinho is the only positive for Liverpool on a night when Southampton’s EFL Cup profligacy might well come back to haunt them.

Southampton 1 Liverpool 0

Nathan Redmond (5.8) made the difference but could have made so much more, as Southampton failed to put away a listless Liverpool at St Mary’s in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

The visitors managed only two shots on target from 68% of the possession, while Redmond alone had five goal scoring chances to make the second leg at Anfield considerably more comfortable than it is likely to be now.

The midfielder did at least convert one of those opportunities, finishing smartly from a Jay Rodriguez (6.3) pass, and was perhaps unlucky to see a late effort hit the bar.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had a major consolation prize to soften the blow of defeat as Philippe Coutinho (8.2) returned after a month and a half out injured. The Brazilian was given a 30-minute cameo and immediately rejuvenated a Reds attack in which Roberto Firmino (8.5) and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) were toothless.

Firmino has struggled hugely during his compatriot’s absence, scoring just once, losing close to a quarter of a million Fantasy managers and dropping 0.3 in value. The 11.6% who have stood by him will now hope for a return to the form – and “false 9 role” – that harvested five goals and as many assists in the first 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Coutinho is still found in 14.7% of Fantasy squads, but he may well be eased back into action just as Liverpool face a mixed bag of upcoming fixtures, with tough matches against Man United, Chelsea and Spurs tempered by a trip to Hull City and the visit of Swansea City.

The Reds also have an FA Cup replay against Plymouth Argyle to resolve on January 18.

Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his weekend side, Claude Puel seven to his, with only Maya Yoshida (4.2), Virgil van Dijk (5.8), Ryan Bertrand (5.4) and Dusan Tadic (7.0) remaining from the Saints team that drew with Norwich.

Yoshida has now started the last four matches across all competitions and, with club skipper Jose Fonte (5.4) looking for an exit over the January transfer window, the Japan international could be one to consider over a relatively attractive run that involves trips to Burnley, Swansea and Sunderland and home matches with Leicester and West Ham.

However, Puel will surely be prioritising a replacement for Fonte should the defender be allowed to leave the club.

Elsewhere, continued rotation looks inevitable in the Saints’ squad as the fixtures continue to pile up. As well as their league commitments, they will have to replay against Norwich City on Wednesday (January 18) before the second leg of their Liverpool tie a week later and a potential FA Cup fourth round tie just three days after that.

For now, though, last night’s result gives them a slight advantage as they look to book a place at Wembley.

Clearly, the outcome of that second leg at Anfield will have major repercussions for FPL managers.

Should the Saints prevail and clinch a place in the final, their Gameweek 26 clash against Arsenal would need rescheduling and would almost certainly be moved to another Gameweek – something to consider for the 36.5% of FPL managers currently holding Alexis Sanchez (£11.9m).

If Liverpool can overcome that deficit, though, their Gameweek 26 trip to Leicester City would require rescheduling instead.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie (Hojbjerg 73), Romeu, Davis (Ward-Prowse 82), Tadic, Redmond, Rodriguez (Long 82).
Subs not used: Lewis, Stephens, McQueen, Sims.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner, Lucas, Can, Wijnaldum (Coutinho 61), Lallana, Firmino (Origi 83), Sturridge.
Subs not used: Mignolet, Gomez, Moreno, Stewart, Woodburn.

Too much depth wenger has anyway plus Mahrez is a bit greedy, won't go well with Sanchez and Arsenal s philosophy.

West Ham fans will blame Payet but I understand his frustration. He was outstanding last season and shone for France at the Euros. But he came back to a team that had under-invested, had no feasible striker apart from Carroll (injury prone) and Zaza (most of his scoring had been done for Sassuolo in Serie B). The only significant signing had been Ayew and he's a wide player or 2nd striker, not a centre forward.

They had also sold an important defender in Tomkins and only replaced him with one of a number of free transfer signings made by the club. And loaned out Valencia (for a fee, of course), the only other feasible striker option apart from the perma-injured Sakho.

As a result, West Ham were ignominiously knocked out of the Europa League before the group stage and lost 5 of their first 6 PL games. Payet returned in GW4 and despite him creating loads of chances and playing really well, West Ham still could only manage 2 wins in the next 12 games. They scored barely more than a goal a game in that run and often had to resort to playing without any recognised striker at all.

The club is unhappy, the fans generally hate the new stadium and the board won't invest or even make serious offers (£5m for Snodgrass?). Payet is 29, at the peak of his career, and was persuaded to ignore interest from PSG and REal Madrid in the summer by all accounts. It's not surprising he feels let down. He's playing in a team not good enough for him.

If that's true about Payet he can do one - The pathetic little clown. Life must be really difficult for him.

Money is no issue to him, but one day I hope an owner stands up and, although he can't stop the sulky player earning the money on their contract, he refuses to sell and lets their career rot away as they can't play anywhere. It'll never happen unless an uber rich owner has principles and is willing to write off a chunk of money on a principle. So highly unlikely.

If you want a move you should play your hardest and give your all until the end of the season, then you can agree to getting the move. Don't behave like a little child. His legacy is ruined at that club now. Payet's Agent will obviously be getting his dirty hands involved and adding to the drama too.

    Winds me up. Rant over.

I think you're missing the point to be honest. It's not about money, it's about glory and success in the twilight of his career. My club lost Antonio to West Ham - never did we think it was about money, we always knew it was about playing at a higher level... I see this the same way really.

                  Correct.

But we had a similar situation with KDB. He had a stellar loan season at Wolfsburg in 2012/13, was brought back to Chelsea and then hardly played. Who could blame him for pressing for a move?

It wasn't money he was concerned about. It was his career.

No Chelsea fans I know of blamed KDB for that. Mostly we just regretted that he hadn't been given a proper chance at Chelsea. 😕

A player of that calibre probably wants to win somthing now he's into his 30s. Everyone here would probably do same thing in his position?

yea, i dont think he is driven completely by money. He is nearing the end of his career and wants to win something. West ham let him down with the spending in summer. Now they are signing a player from the championship.

West ham are trying to sign players that are in a relegation scrap like Snodgrass. This is just part of modern day football.

Which team Snodgrass plays for is totally irrelevant, I think anyone that knows anything about football would agree that Snodgrass is well capable of playing at a higher level than Hull are currently performing!!

Assume you're talking about Defoe and Snodgrass? What was derisory about offering £6m for a 34yr old player with no sell on value. WHU were always going to offer less than what his value to SUN is..

I'm not saying this doesn't happen in modern football, I know it's the reality. But doesn't make Payet any less of a clown. Horrible, greedy and sadly fits the stereotype despite his occasional brilliance.

if he is unsettled why not just come out and say "look, I don't feel to happy here, I would appreciate if you would allow me to explore the opportunity to move. I will give my all whilst I am here" instead of saying you will never play for the club again

It's just his attitude which is bizarre really, he seems to think the way he is approaching this will allow him to get his move easier

Bizarre indeed. Toys out the prat job. Bilic hooked him against City and benched against United and he's having a strop.

Even if West Ham gave him 'assurances', I can't imagine they'd allow him to move mid season anyway.

        Agreed.

I remember all those years ago when Shearer signed for the Rovers. Almost as soon as he got there he said his ultimate goal was to play for Newcastle. Everybody knew where they stood with him....and he never gave less than 100% for Blackburn.

unfortunately these 3-4 weeks are where we have ended up with a terrible schedule of fixtures

lol, this is an illustration of what is wrong with the PL. There is so much money sloshing around, which somehow makes you think that blowing £20m for 3 weeks on a 'might work/might not work' punt seem appropriate.

Makes no business sense. Unless of course they see him as a more long term investment.

    Heaton

    Alonso Ake Cresswell

    0FT and 0.2 ITB

Don't get the hype around this celebration thing tbh. Would people call Callum Wilson a bell end if he celebrated a last minute equaliser in the same game if the roles were reversed and Bournemouth had been 3-0 down ?

No they wouldn't call him a bell end. Obvious innit? Arsenal are supposed to be title contenders. Bournemouth are not. Bournemouth equalising in the last minute = fantastic point. Arsenal doing the same = still 2 points lost on title rivals to a team they should really be beating...

            • 10 Years
            9 years, 7 days ago

It's not as simple as that though is it. First of all, they were 3-0 down - so is that 2 points dropped, or a point gained? It's a tough one to answer.
Secondly, Giroud himself has been struggling for first team football and has just scored a pretty important goal for Arsenal. From a personal point of view for him, it's something to celebrate and I completely get that to be honest.

    Jones Ake Alonso
    Lallana Sanchez(c) Hazard Alli Philips
    Costa Ibra

Subs this week: McAuley Jaku Grabbon Smith

Do I play McAuley rather than Ake or make some more transfers to sort out the defence..?

I'd hold this week to be honest. Play it as it is, if Ake doesn't come on then you get an inevitable 2 points from McAuley anyway, and can make the transfer next week.

I'd play McAuley. Ake might not start but would be likely to come in later to shore up the defence. I think you could make the transfer now, you will need to buff up your defence eventually and there are some good games for clean sheets this week.
