Burnley continue their fine home record while Palace come from behind to avoid a shock against Bolton as the FA Cup third round replays go to form.

Burnley 2 Sunderland 0

Burnley eased past Sunderland and into the fourth round of the FA Cup in a match both sides could have been forgiven for wanting to lose.

Clarets’ boss Sean Dyche made seven changes to the team that beat Southampton on Saturday, with only midfield trio George Boyd (5.1), Steven Defour (5.7) and Jeff Hendrick (5.4), together with defender Michael Keane (4.9), retaining their places.

Sunderland, by contrast, fielded a side much closer to their first XI, with the benching of the 29.3%-owned Jermain Defoe (7.9) the main decision by David Moyes, who also brought in Billy Jones (4.4) and George Honeyman (4.5) as his only other changes from the weekend. Jack Rodwell was their latest injury casualty, ruled out with a knee problem sustained in the defeat to Stoke City.

The goals came from Sam Vokes (5.9), assisted by defender Tendayi Darikwa (4.2), and substitute Andre Gray (6.2), who was set up by Boyd.

Gray, a 5.3%-owned Fantasy asset, had not scored in two league matches, but now has five goals from his last six fixtures in all competitions.

Defoe was brought on in the second half, but was ill-served by a side that managed just two attempts on goal.

Post-match, Moyes rued his squad’s lack of depth.

“I’m really disappointed because we are threadbare at the moment. There were some positives – George (Honeyman) played well for us tonight and we played with three at the back to see if we could stop Burnley bullying us a little bit defensively.”

A change of formation to a three-man backline does have the potential to allow another relatively popular Sunderland asset, the 4.4%-owned Patrick van Aanholt (5.0), a more attacking role.

But Defoe, who has scored four times in Sunderland’s current four-match winless run in the league, remains the Black Cats only real Fantasy attraction.

Burnley will now play Bristol City at Turf Moor on Saturday, January 28, before the Gameweek 23 visit of Leicester on the following Tuesday.

Burnley XI: Pope, Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Flanagan, Kightly (Gray 77), Boyd (O’Neill 90), Barton, Defour, Hendrick, Vokes.
Subs not used: Robinson, Mee, Lowton, Ward, Jackson.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Denayer, Djilobodji, van Aanholt, Manquillo, Larsson, Love (Defoe 63), Honeyman, Januzaj, Borini (Asoro 80).
Subs not used: Mika, O’Shea, E Robson, Embleton, T Robson.

Crystal Palace 2 Bolton Wanderers 1

Christian Benteke (7.4) came off the bench to score twice in 30 minutes and give Sam Allardyce his first win as Palace manager.

The 5.7%-owned Belgian hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 15 – the end of a purple patch during which he netted five times in as many matches – and has suffered a major decline in ownership and price as a result.

A return to form could reverse both those trends as Palace prepare for a vital run of fixtures involving Everton, Sunderland and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Bournemouth, Stoke City and West Brom.

Allardyce made seven changes to the team well beaten by West Ham at the weekend, but having talked up new signing Jeffrey Schlupp (4.8) pre-match, the former Leicester man was not eligible to make the squad.

Midfielder Sullay Kaikai (4.5) was given his first ever Eagles start, while Joel Ward (4.8), Damien Delaney (4.8), Andros Townsend (5.9) and Joe Ledley (4.4) were the only survivors from Saturday’s side.

Palace were on course for a loss before Allardyce chanced his arm with a triple substitution. Benteke responded by heading home a Mathieu Flamini (4.3) cross and then steered home the winner from a Townsend assist.

The manager didn’t dwell on the victory for long post-match, spending much of the time talking of the need to strengthen his squad.

“We are spreading our wings far and wide and hopefully in the next 48 hours, at least one of those targets will be saying yes, pass a medical and sign for us. It’s hard to say how many we’re looking for; we’ve had about five, six or even eight bids in for players across Europe and in this country, and we’ve only had one accepted, which is Jeffrey Schlupp.”

The Eagles’ immediate schedule is certainly demanding. The FA Cup victory means they’ll entertain Man City in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28 – three days before they travel to Bournemouth for Gameweek 23.

City will have the benefit of an extra day off before their trip to West Ham on the Wednesday evening.

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Ward, Kelly, Delaney (Tomkins 62), Fryers, Lee, Flamini, Ledley (Puncheon 63), Townsend, Kaikai, Remy (Benteke 62).
Subs not used: Hennessey, Phillips, Cabaye, Husin.

Thinking of doing Pieters > Alonso this week. This is my team. Currently 1FT and 2.2 ITB:

    Heaton / Pickford
    Valencia / Brunt / Chambers / Pieters / Amat
    Sanchez / Hazard / Alli / Pogba / Stanislas
    Ibra / Giroud / Anichebe

    Yes or no?

I like it! I think Alonso will return another double digit this week with a cleany and assist or something

      I would hold.

Valencia brunt chambers sound this week.

Choice of alonso or Walker then, spurs the handier fixtures.

      My opinion only

    Grant
    Alonso Brunt Baines
    Sanchez(C) Lallana Pedro Phillips(VC)
    Rondon Lukaku Ibra

    subs: Heaton Alli Friend Ake
    1.6 ITB

    1. Any suggestions for the starting line up/bench?
    2. 3-4-3 with Rondon or 3-5-2 with Alli? I just feel that Rondon will get more points than Alli this gameweek
    3. Should I do Lallana->Coutinho before his price rockets? Who do you expect to be more involved in points long term? I've had Lallana since 7.3 so if i sell now i make 0.2 profit
    4. Ake will have to go at some point to free up the 3rd Chelsea spot. Who should replace him to that low price? Thinking of Holgate/Yoshida
    5. Thinking of doing Alli->Eriksen as I expect the Dane to be more involved in points, would you do it?
    6. Any other thoughts about my team?

    Thank you 🙂

Not sure where to burn an FT, current GW22 defence looks like this:
    Heaton
    Azpi-Valencia-Holebas

    Should I:

    A) Zieler -> Valdes, bench Heaton
    B) Francis -> Chambers/Funes Mori, bench Holebas

    Is Friend nailed against WHU?
    Friend - McAuley/Walker - Luiz and Foster.

Play Stanilas (WAT) or Siggy (liv)?

Play McAuley (SUN, probably clean sheet), already have Foster or Walker (mci, probably not clean sheet)? Or both and bench Friend.

If Giroud isnt fit for a hit. (-4)
    a) Siggy + Giroud to Ramirez/Capoue/Matic and Kane? (already have Stanislas)
    b) Siggy + Giroud to Phillips and Lukaku (already have Rondon)

Probably going to save ft if Giroud is fit.
Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - Stanislas (Siggy)
    Ibra - Rondon - Giroud

Might've been a good idea to show your team here.

      A) I think I will bench Ramirez or Rondon.
      B) Benching Rondon over Stanislas because have Phillips.

Really tough. I'd wait til Friday and the Gru news (like I am - see below!) as your decision may be made for you!

Anyone else you can potentially bench? Of those, I'd be so torn but maybe Alli because Stan has a better fixture on paper and is on pens... but City are hardly in form so it'd be really such a marginal call.

I can't split them, benching Alli feels so yuck.

        Heaton (Jaku)
        Baines, Brunt, Daniels (Chambers, Yoshi)
        Sanchez, Haz, Alli, Phillips (Stanislas)
        Ibra, Lukaku, Giroud

Yeah. This is why I always have everyone on the bench being bench fodder / solid 2 pointers - it can catch you out, yes, but I hate having this situation.

Now I see you have Daniels, I think benching Stan is "correct" because of Alli / Spurs' form. Leave it like that.

Plus if Giroud is out you can always bench / remove for a cheaper striker and go 3-5-2 🙂

No Baines rise yet. Another day of hovering over Nyom -> Baines whilst I have perfect money...

    Team is
    Randolph / Jaku
Alonso Jones Nyom / Pieters Amat
San(c)hez Antonio Alli KdB / Fletcher
    Ibra Gru Rondon
    2.1itb / 1 FT

Gotta wait on Gru news, right? I can't get Kane in if I do Baines (for a -4 by downgrading the mistake that was KdB; I'll muddle through in defence if that's the case), and can't think of anyone else I'd want other than Costa for Gru, who obviously has his own question mark hanging over him!

I'd hold on. Doesn't sound a serious injury.

Cheers Clump. Den Binnery said it "wasn't a serious" as first thought (https://twitter.com/BenDinnery/status/821035164004446208) so hopefully it'll be ok.

Giroud perfect for the upcoming fixtures, but am ok with Ozil in for KdB and Kane in for Gru if not, think that's a super solid -4.

Wait on Costa but i think he'll be back in the team. Can you do Pieters > Baines?

Yep, I can do that even after a Baines rise. Worry about removing Pieters who is definitely playing, though, Bobby - it still leaves me with Amat and, potentially, Nyom as non-playing defenders I still need to change up.

I can afford Coleman (5.5) or a straight swap to Brunt (5.0) for Nyom even if Baines rises, so I guess I should wait. Just so tempting to get Sir Leighton in though with those fixtures plus penalties...

I got him last week. Would always pick baines over coleman as you said due to pens. Tough mate but waiting is the best form of action here. We should find out about Nyom in the next few days - last i read Fifa were stepping in to see if they can get clearance

Yeah wish I'd done that - I had to replace Costa and Origi last week which meant I couldn't get Baines in, plus it was yet again looking like a 50/50 at that point over Nyom.

Nevermind! Guess I'd better hold on. And maybe do something else other than think about fpl... like work!?

I'd pull the trigger on Nyom-Baines tomorrow for sure. I suspect Giroud will play and be fine

Cheers IWR, I was really close to doing it this morning when I saw that Bainesy hadn't risen!

Now I've thought about it and commented / read on here, the problem with this is that I can't get Kane in if Giroud this week without a -8 if I do Baines in and I think I'd only want Kane in for Gru if he's out. That's basically the only bit holding me back.

Also strongly considering Brunt because many have at least one of McAuley and Foster, so any WBA cleanie is going to punish me.

These factors all make me think just wait - there's always Coleman lol

Its tough. Eriksen is popular due to form/consistency and is on FK/Corners. Alli is the one who can be explosive. I went with Alli but Eriksen is very hard to ignore.

I thought it was interesting in the Big Numbers article to see that whilst Alonso has a poor shots on target ratio, his conversion rate from his few actual shots on target is very good.

This set me wondering; do players with a poor ratio of shots on target tend to have a better conversion rate for the shots that are on target? Are they deliberately aiming for the corners of the goal, meaning that they have fewer shots on target but that more of those go in?

So I decided to make a new stats table, extract the results into excel, process and plot the data, write a members article and walk away with a nifty £10 amazon voucher.

Unfortunately there is absolutely no correlation whatsoever. So that's that question answered. You're all welcome.
