Two ties lead to single-goal victories for Premier League sides on a night decidedly short of many FA Cup thrills and spills.

Plymouth Argyle 0 Liverpool 1

A first-half header from Lucas (4.4) finally saw off a spirited Plymouth and secured Liverpool a home tie with Wolves in the fourth round.

The Brazilian netted from a Philippe Coutinho (8.3) corner but Jurgen Klopp’s young side couldn’t kill off the tie, with Divock Origi (6.6) having a second-half penalty saved following a foul on Alberto Moreno (4.4).

Klopp made nine changes from the side who drew with Manchester United on Sunday. But having named the club’s youngest ever team for the first cup tie, he drafted in only Coutinho, who was given another hour as he returns from injury, and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) to give the starting line-up at Home Park just a sprinkling of extra experience.

The England striker was a peripheral figure and Coutinho only an intermittent influence and as a result, the Reds struggled to break down their hosts, who were the width of a post away from dragging the match into extra time as they grew in confidence following the break.

One of Liverpool’s youngsters, Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.3), again impressed at right-back in the continued absence of the 11.5%-owned Nathaniel Clyne (5.8), who missed the Old Trafford match with a rib injury.

Aside from the result, the 18-year-old’s performance, and more minutes for Coutinho, were the major positives for Klopp when speaking post-match.

“I’m happy, really happy. It was very important for us. I thought 60-65 minutes was the perfect intensity for today. Good for him (Coutinho) and good for us.”

Liverpool will now have to attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final, face Wolves and then entertain Chelsea in Gameweek 23 during a busy last week of January.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Lucas, Moreno, Stewart, Ejaria, Coutinho (Wilson 65), Woodburn, Origi, Sturridge (Ojo 76).
Subs not used: Mignolet, Klavan, Williams, Randall, Alves.

Southampton 1 Norwich City 0

‘Every game’s an adventure’ according to this year’s FA Cup marketing blurb.

Well if Southampton’s replay with Norwich was an adventure, it wasn’t an awfully big one. In fact it was just awful.

Shane Long (6.1) bundled home the winner two minutes into stoppage time to finally put a drab match out of its misery, earning the Saints a home encounter with Arsenal in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28.

Coach Claude Puel made eight changes to the side who lost to Burnley at the weekend, with only Long, Maya Yoshida (4.2) and James Ward-Prowse (5.0) keeping their places. The 11.8%-owned Virgil van Dijk (5.8) – a virtual ever-present this season – missed out with a knock.

Southampton had 10 shots on target to the visitors’ zero, but struggled to break down Norwich’s deep-lying defence – fitting for a side who, with just 19 goals, have the Premier League’s second worst scoring record.

Puel has not named the same side for consecutive matches all season. That lack of continuity explains some of his side’s toothlessness up front, as does the lack of a quality goalscorer since Charlie Austin (6.4) fell to a long-term injury.

No amount of tinkering by Puel seems to be addressing that issue, making the Saints’ forthcoming fixtures – Leicester City and West Ham at home, Swansea City and Sunderland away – attractive only as a chance for Fantasy managers to pick up points from defensive assets.

The Arsenal tie will be book-ended by the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool and a Gameweek 23 trip to Swansea. Such a busy schedule will no doubt prompt further changes by Puel.

At least his decision to make Yoshida captain against Norwich – and then single him out for post-match praise – suggests the budget centre-half looks key to Puel’s defensive plans.

“Maya made a very good season, playing well in every moment and with good concentration, winning duels and giving satisfaction. He made good progress since the start of the season.”

With Cedric, Dusan Tadic and Redmond also named on the bench, Fantasy managers can at least look to that trio with a degree of security ahead of Gameweek 22. It remains to be seen if Jay Rodriguez, withdrawn on 70 minutes last night, leads the attack.

Southampton XI: Lewis, Martina, Yoshida, Stephens, McQueen, Clasie, Reed (Romeu 71), Ward-Prowse, Sims, Long, Rodriguez (Redmond 70).
Subs not used: Taylor, Soares, Gardos, Tadic, Højbjerg.

    Gents,

Is it worth using my wildcard if I would change those in CAPS?

    Heaton - Foster
    Alonso - Jones - EVANS _ HOLEBAS _ AMAT
    Sanchez - Eriksen - SIGGY - PUNCHEON - FLETCHER
    Ibra - AGUERO - BENTEKE

Looks like I would be moving at least 8 players.

Alternatively I have 2FTs, 0.0m in the bank to make smaller changes.

How's Puncheon in your team? Just do Aguero+Benteke->Kane+Lukaku if you can

Went balls out a few GWs back on Palace vs Swansea, expecting the Big Sam bounce that never happened!

Short on cash for the move you suggest unfortunately.

I always try and save for potential DGW's. So if I were in your position I'd use the 2 FT's, maybe even take a hit if you're desperate, and sort it out gradually.

Seems like the consensus is to save the WC, so thanks for that - ideally that is what I will do.

Frustrating what FTs to make though, as I can't take Phillips due to owning 3 WBA already and I kind of want to hold Kun for this week at least.

Puncheon + Tekkers + Aguero > Stanislas + Kane + Lukaku (if you can't afford Kaku, then maybe Defoe?)

I think you're right that Big Sam will turn Palace around; you just went in a touch early by the looks of it. GW24-27 looks profitable but I doubt you'd want to hold for that long.

      I'd do;
      Puncheon to Stanislas

To make wholesale changes you'd need Aguero's cash really so maybe do three transfers (-4) with that next week?

I'm saving the WC, but not convinced it's necessarily the right strategy if a team needs a major overhaul. Last year, we had a big DGW immediately followed by one with lots of blanks--tough to handle without a WC. This year, it looks like most of the blanks will happen in weeks 26 and 28, with doubles 34 and 37, so more conducive to being handled with FT's and some planning.

1FT, 0.3 in the bank. Thoughts? Been meaning to get rid of Willian for ages, bit of a dilemna between him and Costa in that if one starts the other won't.

    Grant
    Alonso - Jones - Rose
    Sanchez - Willian - Alli - Allen
    Ibrahimovic - Costa - Rondon

    Pickford - Capoue - Francis - Amat

I attach lower probability for Bournemouth clean sheet even though they Re playing watford at home . Face it, they are missing the spines in defense : Ake and Francis are out. Hull managed to score 3.

How "nailed on" is Crouch? I'm getting tired of having Anichebe in my team.

I have 1.9 in the bank, and that won't get me much more than Crouch unless I downgrade Hazard (which I'm reluctant to do before he's facing Hull).

Alternatively I can just upgrade Pieters to Walker/Rose/Baines.

    Thoughts?

    Heaton Foster
    Alonso Evans Friend Ward Pieters
Hazard Sanchez Eriksen Phillips De Roon
    Ibrahimovic Kane Anichebe

    Benching headache:

    Heaton
    Daniels Baines Brunt
    Stanislas Ali Eriksen San(c)hez Phillips
    Ibra Lukaku

    (Jaku, Giroud, Rose, Yoshida)

G2G or does Giroud deserve a start presuming he is fit?

It doesn't sit well especially as an arsenal fan, but who do I drop instead? With Giroud scoring and only getting 5 points last week I thought it would be the safest option seeing as the point ceiling is higher with midfielders

I wouldnt bench Alli. Would bench Eriksen.

Why? City should have most of the ball as Spurs will be ok to leave it to them and counter quickly. Alli's good runs could hurt them.

Yeh agree with your logic regarding eriksen, I really am tempted to use BB. Reason being, it will only be of more use to me in the DGW if I have all 15 players with doubles. Chances are like past seasons without my wildcard I'l have between 8-11 players typically with doubles. In which case, why not use BB now?

Can't afford Defoe without a hit and already have 3 WBA so Rondon would also be a hit.
Should I keep him for this week or just take a -4?

Lots of potential points on bench
Guess you can look to bench Defoe and play Stanislas? Can't argue much with benching Friend with that defense though

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

Oops, crossed the border and lost internet. Hard to bench a goalscrorer like Defoe against a WBA side that conceded 4 last game, whoever they played. I agree it's not idea having points on the bench, but better than having none when someone's injured (which has happened a lot to me this season).

I would bench Alli or Philips for Stanislas before Defoe. I wanna play Stan, but it's not an easy decision. Thanks for the reply!

Ok folks, any opinions on this:

    A. Allen/Aguero > Phillips/Kane (leaving ££ to upgrade elsewhere next week)

    B. Allen/Holebas > Phillips/Love (bench fodder)

    Foster
    Azpi Walker Pieters (Amat Holbas)
    Sanchez Eriksen Allen Lallana
    Ibra Defoe Aguero

My gut is A, being Kane over Aguero on form and both have tasty fixtures...

    Would welcome any thoughts!
