Last season, there was simply no contest when it came to the budget midfielder of choice amongst Fantasy Premier League managers.

Starting off 2015/16 at the cost of 5.5, Riyad Mahrez tore up the top-flight on his way to ending the campaign as the highest scoring player in FPL, steering Leicester City to the most unexpected of title triumphs.

This time around, however, things are not quite so cut and dry…

Watford’s Etienne Capoue and Stoke’s Joe Allen have fallen out of favour after severe regression, while Palace wide man Wilfried Zaha is currently out the picture after opting to turn out for Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hull City’s Robert Snodgrass has upped his output in recent matches, but with trips to Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal supplemented by a visit from Liverpool in the next four, it’s difficult to extol his virtues until the schedule smiles far kinder from Gameweek 26 onwards.

With that in mind, we’re turning our attentions to a couple of cut-price wide men with form and fixtures very much in their favour.

Matt Phillips has dispelled the notion that, when it comes to Fantasy investment, it’s defence or nothing with West Brom.

This week, over 73,000 FPL managers have drafted in the 5.9-priced Baggies winger, who ranks eighth overall in the midfield standings with 102 points.

As a result, he currently sits in 20% of squads, having averaged 5.1 points per match.

Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas is another who has belied a lowly price tag.

In a season hampered by hamstring injuries, he’s surpassed Phillips for points per appearance, with an average of 5.5 just behind Liverpool pair Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho, on 5.6 apiece.

Subject to over 42,000 transfers in this week, the Cherries wide man remains very much a differential and resides in a mere 3% of squads right now.

In tonight’s second member’s article, we cast an eye over both these players, assessing their individual numbers, over the season and in recent weeks, as we ramp up our search for value in the centre of the park.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Rose or Yoshida for this week?

Fancy Saints against Leicester at home due to Leicester being so poor away. But Rose has the higher ceiling with his attacking returns.

Been on Sanchez all week, but tempting to change

Hazard could be a huge boost if Sanchez fails since he will probably be captained most. However if he goes off we will regret it.

Sanchez safe choice. Hazard risky choice.

It's a tricky one. Alexis home form is poor. That said, I'm a breath away from ditching Hazard to free up funds. But he's home to Hull- any chance of a false 9 for him if Costa doesn't start?

      1. nkhoughton
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 6 months ago

If Costa doesn't start then hazard could be false 9 plus at home could be a way to get him his 1st Chelsea hat trick in ages, if Alexis starts cf could be a major boost for him lw he isn't as explosive

Both likely to start but hazard won't be as dampened by Costa there more likely boosted can't say that about Alexis but Sanchez is still a good shout regardless but hazard home to Hull is very tempting

Hazard at home is impressive regardless of stats, hazard vs Hull is good

    8. stat
      9 years, 6 months ago

At the moment I'm with Hazard, even though it's the riskier selection. Hazard's home form is significantly better than the home form of Sanchez. Hazard is on penalties, and no team in the league has conceded more penalties than Hull. Hull have also just sold Livermore and may be without Snodgrass due to injury. Hazard is also much stronger at home than he is away, and most of his point hauls have come at home.

On the other hand, Sanchez is in better form and has been more consistent over the course of the season. If Sanchez does well and Hazard blanks, I'll suffer more as a Hazard captainer than I would if the opposite happened (Hazard outscoring Sanchez, and captaining Sanchez). Burnley's away form is horrible - though Hull's is around the same level.

I'm going to take the risk and go with Hazard, because I feel he is the more explosive option this GW.

He has only scored more than one goal once this season though back in GW 11 against Everton. I agree he is playing well but his FPL returns not so much.

          2. stat
            9 years, 6 months ago

Yep, meanwhile Sanchez has only scored 3 goals and registered 3 assists in 10 PL home games this season. He's blanked in 5 of those games too.

Hazard's poor away form is mentioned a lot more than Sanchez' poor home form, for some reason.

        2. stat
          9 years, 6 months ago

Very difficult choice to make, but if I had to make a prediction I'd say that both will do well this GW.

If Hazard blanks, his ownership is going to drop like crazy.

      2. nkhoughton

Well put I will go with hazard this week, Alexis I will captain vs Watford. In terms of risk hazard exploding this week and Alexis not so much this week will boost a lot who go hazard

    9. Guba
      • 10 Years

If both Giroud and Costa weren't playing I would captain Sanchez as I feel he gains significantly more from playing further forward and not on the wing.

As it stand both strikers look like they'll be playing which personally I think benefits Hazard more, plus that he has better home form and against a worse side defensively.

      In summary: Hazard

Anyone considered Hulls new loan signing right back Omar Elabdellaoui? it's my understanding he can play this weekend. Should definitely stengthen the team but I'd imagine it would take time for him to settle into the side.

My only fear with Sanchez as C is the amount of players around him that could share the points but I guess the could be said about Chelsea with Pedro, Costa and even Alonso's form. Pens are a big advantage though.....I also can't help fast forwarding to Sunda afternoon, the Arsenal match is over, Sanchez has blanked....and the Chelsea match is about to kick off with a Hazard captaincy, could end the w-end very nicely.

I would easily pick Fabio over Friend. He has been amazing lately and the Boro fans really rate him. Some are starting to doubt if Friend are good enough for the PL, and they think Barragan is sh*t. Fabio also has better attacking stats than Friend. All full backs are a risk though, so Chambers if you want to play it safe.

    B: Philips
    C: Mirallas
Both my rivals have Stan and my gut says Philips, but Mirallas could be a great wildcard
    Cheers!!

Pep: "He (Aguero) has already signed a contract."

      "An extension?"

Pep: "Yeah, I think so. I think it's already done."

How quickly do people think Berahino will be starting games for Stoke? Currently have Crouch in my draft team, should I swap for Saido?

Ademola Lookman is the real deal, says Ronald Koeman, and in line for an Everton start very soon @_ChrisBascombe https://t.co/Z3mTVrcTg4

Only scored/assisted in 2 games in the last several games. Needs to show more consistency

Koeman doesn't actually say he is going to start in the quotes, just looks like the writer trying to make a more interesting story

I'd bin him tbh. Lukaku looks a decent short term punt but he's an incredibly frustrating player. So Kane for me.

Thinking maybe Kane in for Aguero and then Evans > Brunt -4?

I know that its stating the obvious but In gw26 the efl cup final will be played which will mean that four teams will be without a game. Games include

    City v United
    Saints v arsenal
    Leicester v Liverpool

I'm discounting the fact that hull are unlikely to get through after first leg. It might be worth looking at this after knowing who the finalists will be after midweek this week.

Just flagging it up in advance.

Interesting. When would the resulting DGWs likely happen?

Trends tend to show gw 34 or 37 as dgw's but this largely depends on teams still involved in fa cup.

    What do you reckon guys

A save transfer, play rose bench Evans
B Evans to brunt and bench rose

    1. Ibracadabra
      • 17 Years

      C. Save transfer. Start Evans. Rose first sub. If Evans doesn't play, Rose can provide attacking returns against a woeful City back four + GK even if he does concede.
