Liverpool slump once again as a late Long goal takes Southampton to Wembley to set up a likely double Gameweek scenario for Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez.

Liverpool 0 Southampton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

Shane Long (6.1) sent Southampton to Wembley with a 90th minute EFL Cup semi-final winner that a resolute Saints thoroughly deserved.

Liverpool dominated possession but rarely threatened, with Daniel Sturridge (9.7) missing the one clear chance they created when he volleyed over from just five yards out. The only other major scare for the visitors came when Fraser Forster (5.1) somehow slapped the ball off the goal-line from his own fumble.

Oriol Romeu (4.5) and Maya Yoshida (4.2) were superb for the Saints, who sat deep and yet always carried a threat on the break; a threat that finally bore fruit when Long smashed home from a Josh Sims (4.2) assist.

With the EFL Cup final taking place on Sunday, February 26, Southampton’s Gameweek 26 home match with Arsenal will now be postponed. If that translates to a double Gameweek 34 or 37, as it did in the previous two seasons, then the Saints will also face either a trip to Chelsea or Middlesbrough. Arsenal will entertain Sunderland or go to Stoke City.

There will be more time to assess the scenario in full. However, clearly, the immediate impact is that with Manchester United also favourites to progress to the final via tonight’s tie with Hull City, we face the prospect of being without both Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Gameweek 26 – the top two owned Fantasy Premier League assets.

While that will come as a blow, the preferred strategy will surely be to bench both and absorb their loss for that weekend.

In saying that, it’s worth bearing in mind that, should Arsenal and United both progress to the FA Cup quarter finals – which take place on the weekend of Gameweek 28 – Sanchez and Ibra could conceivably face two blanks over three rounds of fixtures.

The upside, of course, would be the subsequent doubles to follow as a result of rescheduling, making them key targets for the Triple Captain chip, or as part of a Bench Boosted squad.

Returning to Southampton’s triumph, skipper Virgil van Dijk (5.8) missed the Anfield tie as he continues to struggle with an ankle problem. Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Dutchman would be facing up to three months on the sidelines with the injury setback suffered against Leicester City on Sunday, although the club are yet to confirm that prognosis.

Claude Puel addressed Van Dijk’s situation post-match, to reveal that the defender is to undergo further scans and consult specialist advice. That would certainly indicate that we are unlikely to see Van Dijk for the Gameweek 23 trip to Swansea City.

Jack Stephens (4.0) was a more than able deputy for the Dutchman in Tuesday’s tie, one of just two changes Puel made to his side. Stephens, along with Yoshida, now represents a budget route into a Saints defence that, as demonstrated in last night’s tie, could offer real value as a source of defensive returns. However, that presumes that Puel will not move into the market prior to Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Elsewhere for the Saints, both James Ward-Prowse (5.0) and Jay Rodriguez (6.3) were withdrawn with injuries, with the latter suffering an ankle problem which saw him swapped for Long at half-time. Both appear to be early doubts for Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Arsenal and the Tuesday meeting with the Swans.

Jurgen Klopp was more bold with his Liverpool line-up, bringing in four fresh faces, most notably Joel Matip (5.3), who replaced Ragnar Klavan (4.6) after finally being cleared to play following his bizarre club versus country issue.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (4.3) again came in for Nathaniel Clyne (5.8). The England right-back played the full match at the weekend, but a recurrence of his rib injury sidelined him against the Saints.

It has been a terrible January for the Reds, who have won just once in six attempts – and that was 1-0 at League Two Plymouth.

The return of Philippe Coutinho (8.3 and 18.7%-owned) has not borne fruit as yet – the Brazilian managed 87 minutes but again lacked any real spark– and Liverpool have sorely missed Sadio Mane’s (9.0) attacking verve.

To cap a miserable month, Mane’s Senegal finished top of their group in the Africa Cup of Nations 24 hours before the Reds’ EFL Cup exit, so his absence will be extended further.

With Chelsea and Spurs to come over the next three Gameweeks, any sign of an end to their 2017 slump could remain equally elusive.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Milner, Can (Origi 78), Henderson, Lallana, Firmino, Sturridge, Coutinho (Wijnaldum 87).
Subs not used: Mignolet, Klavan, Moreno, Lucas, Woodburn.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand, Ward-Prowse (Hojbjerg 59), Romeu, Davis, Tadic, Rodriguez (Long 45), Redmond (Sims 81).
Subs not used: Lewis, Clasie, Martina, McQueen.

    Key questions:

    1) Bench or sell Sanchez and Ibra for the blank GWs?
    2) Who to get for the blank GWs?

      1) I am keeping them. Too expensive to get them back in.
      2) I will however be bringing in Kane for Aguero. It won't cost me anything to get him back in after (if I decide to)

I'll keep Sanchez but sell ibra. Costa/kane might be a good choice for ibra

      1) Sell for me - they'll fall 0.2 / 0.3 around that time - maybe more if they have 2 blanks in the space of 3 weeks.
      2) Lukaku if you don't have him, any other Everton, West Ham, West Brom or Bournemouth players you fancy. Otherwise, hang on until we know which games will go ahead in GW28.

    6. MTPockets
      9 years, 5 months ago

      1) Likely selling one of them. Don't know which but probably Ibra.
      2) Any appealing non blanking players first, then others.

I am benching Ibra (great fixtures) and selling Sanchez after Hull. Till gw 31 very bad fixtures so not buying back until then for sure.

      1) Bench if they have a single blank and you'd lose a lot of value from selling. Sell if the value hit is tolerable and they blank twice. Out of the two, right now Sanchez looks essential, but it's close.

      2) Replacements are tough, Lukaku, Kane and Costa are the usual suspects.

    Heaton
    Alonso, baines, brunt
    Sanchez, alli, cout, Pedro, Phillips
    Ibra, lukaku

    Jaku, barnes, friend, holgate

1ft, 0.1 itb. Any change suggested?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Dealing with the League Cup blanks

With the Southampton v Arsenal clash now odds on to be postponed and Man Utd favourites to join them with a blank fixture how are you planning to cope with GWK 26's reduced schedule?

If as expected Man Utd prevail over Hull tonight the following ties will be off and rescheduled.

    Sou v Arsenal
    Man C v Man U

How many players from these sides do you own?
Will you be more reticent about recruiting them?
And given Ibrahimovic and Sanchez's ownership can owners of both realistically bench both in GWK 26?

I have Ibrahimovic, Sanchez, Giroud and that's it from those four sides.

But crucially with Amat I have only 14 players.

The aim is to keep Sanchez and Ibrahimovic benched due to value tied up and wanting them long term (esp with dgwks to follow)...which means my planning now will centre around making sure I have a credible bench to cope.

Giroud will depart as well and Amat needs replacing. Other than that should be good to go GWK 26...well in theory anyway 😉

      Own 3.
      Not buying from those.
Will bench, unless they blank GW28 too, in which case I will then reassess. Will be holding 2 FTs throughout until all the fixtures are made clear.

If Sanchez and Ibra both blank in 26 & 28 I'll sell both and bring them back later.

Actually that's a good point...as there value will plummet anyway then so the cost of buying back wouldn't be so bad for long term owners.

So I'll revise my answer - Ibra and Sanchez are gone if the only play once in three gwks.

I'm guessing about a 0.4 drop for both as most sales will come before gw 26. That should be fine for most Ibra owners. Sanchez you'll lose a little more on but not enough to bench for 2 weeks imo.

It should in fact work out you can buy them both back for what you sold them for at worst. Give or take the odd 0.1.

For Sanchez GW 27 is Liverpool away so maybe can ride that out.
Ibra GW27 would be Bournemouth at home. If you already have Lukaku not so many choices for Ibra as other big hitters could also be blanking GW28.

I agree with that. Sanchez has bad run of 5 fixtures after hull. 2 blanks liv, wba, MCI. I can go Alli, Eriksen, Hazard,Philips with better result without him during that spell.

It kind of seals Hazard's fate for me.

I might hold for this week but Hazard to a Phillips or Mirallas, allowing me to upgrade both Amat and Anichebe to decent GW26 and 28 assets now looks certain.

      -Giroud

      -Jones

Giroud and Jones will be moved before 26 most likely to Kane and Brunt.
Will keep or Sell Sanchez and Ibra
      depending on

      -mass sales
      -other players emerging

I can cover Cech by Jak. Sanchez by Evans, Ozil to someone and Diomande to cover Ibra 😳

I'm also considering WC in order to bring Chelsea players and sort the defense and team structure

      will bench Sanchez & Ibra.
Hazard goes to upgrade Amat & Jones.
Giroud was going anyway to Lukaku.
Can easily get to a decent side for GW26 with no hits but will wait for this weekend's FA Cup results & subsequent draw before making any final decisions.

      Sanchez and kun
Don't know what to do atm. Kun to ibra for a hit doesn't make sense atm.

Only Ibra + Sanchez but not sure if I will keep them, will depend on gw 28. If for example both Arsenal + Manu blank again gw 28, and another good team like Chelsea doesn't. I think I'm selling to the likes of Hazard/Costa. If there are no really good alternatives however, I'll probably just bench both and play 442 for 1 week

      the value is key.

i bought Sanchez at his lowest price ages ago so clearly not selling to then buy back on wildcard say, as would be killed

players I've only recently moved in from those teams will be transferred out

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

        Yes, that's very true.

I made a big mistake selling Sanchez when I thought he was an injury risk and he wasn't. Cost me 37 points in 2 weeks and 0.4m more to bring him back. But that could now help me because I bought at 11.5m. He'd be an easy sell with blanks GW26 & 28 (if that happens).

I also planned to switch Zlatan out for Costa in GW26 anyway. Costa's record against Swansea is off the scale. With Zlatan having a blank that's easyish too because I bought at 11.3m (way back before he fell to 11.1m).

It seems to me that arriving in GW26 with 2 FTs is the main thing. The GW28 situation will also be a lot clearer by then.

      5....

Sanchez, Giroud, Ibra, Jones, and Mkhitaryan.

Mkhitaryan's days are numbered anyway. Giroud likely needs to go now Walcott is back but we'll see.

I want to keep Sanchez and Ibra and may just bench them. A lot still depends on GW28. If they blank both it's a whole different story.

Unknown. They might re-schedule for GW26 at the risk of having to postpone again if FA Cup replays intervene. They might re-schedule for GW34 which runs the same risk.

But on past record they will do nothing and wait. And then get into knots later on. And then have to pay a fine to UEFA. That's probably the most likely outcome. 🙁

It would be 3 days (Sunday/Wednesday). But yes, that's why they usually don't re-schedule just after a cup final when one of the teams concerned may have just had to play 120 minutes. If I had to guess it would be "do nothing".

Don't really think it's wise to even entertain a decision on this now. The decision will be informed by what happens in the meantime in terms of form and fitness, what alternatives are available at the time and whether there are other matters putting a demand on the two free transfers. All speculation at this point, so there's more interesting things to worry about

I have Ibra, Jones, Alexis, Kos and Kun.

And yet, with 2FT currently in hand I've figured out a plan to get a decent 11 out in GW26. If I can manage it with that amount of blankers I'm sure others will be fine.

Can't say specifically who I will be selling/keeping and benching due to the amount of ffs money leagues I'm in 😉 ha

Triple Arsenal and Carrick here. I'm definitely keeping and benching Alexis. He's in my team since day one so there's no point to get rid of him and then buy back for more. Giroud out, Carrick stays and I'm not sure about Özil yet. It really depends on how players from other teams perform before GW26 and on some unexpected injuries.

Have Giroud, Sanchez, Koscielny and Ibra. Also have Amat and Capoue so some surgery is required. Amat to Fernandez (4.2) could be a simple option.

Will probably ditch Sanchez for BLANK-liv-BLANK and keep Ibra.

Mate of mine has Sanchez, Giroud, Valencia, Ibra, Sterling, Yoshida plus two fodder players Fraizer Campbell(?) and Amat = a total of 8 players who are guaranteed or very likely to miss GW26.

I have Sanchez, Giroud, Jones and Ibra.

Jones and Giroud were becoming Coleman and Lukaku for GW26 anyway and i'll just bench Ibra and Sanchez, I don't need to sell them to fix my bench so will just take the drops as they are going nowhere with potential double doubles to come.

My bench has been built to cope with GW26 (Chambers, Barnes and Brunt) so a team for 26 is not a problem, whats the bigger problem is Hazard and his replacement, want to 'gamble' on KDB for the next 3 and don't want to be put off by blanks as there's still a lot of points at stake in the 3 GW's leading up to the first blank.

GW26 not a problem, figured out a plan for 7 key players in 28 with no hits, think i'll settle for that and just try and tread water that week, everyone will be in the sh*t anyway.

Will keep both for DGWs as I can bring McAuley and Gray off the bench for that blank GW

Shipping Jones next week, especially now he's had his nice price rise and I've made 0.1

Ibra and Sanchez tough - might be worth a -4 to do a 'switcheroo' but I'll have to look nearer the time. As with the majority, I've owned both for a little while so the price variance likely to preclude buy back.

I have Sanchez, Giroud and Ibra.
I will happily bench them to play 541

      Randolph (wat)
Alonso (SWA), Rose (STO), Baines (SUN), Coleman (SUN), Brunt (BOU)
Eriksen (C) (STO), Alli (STO), Phillips (Bou), Davies (SUN)
      Defoe (eve)

The above would be my current team so I won't worry too much until the week before.
I am likely to keep Sanchez and Ibra even if they blank in 28 as well, Giroud would have to go though.

Have Sánchez & Ibra. Whilst I would expect values to plummet I might keep hold of Sánchez. Ibra is replaceable with Lukaku but it very much depends which teams go out in the FA Cup this weekend as to whether a high scoring mid can be found for GW28. If they can't it's just an unnecessary transfer

Ibra, Sanchez, Jones and Yoshida. There's a fair chance the only one left by 26 will be Yoshida, especially if Sanchez also blanks 28.

Late to the conversation, but a further wrinkle here is the fixtures preceding and following the GW26/28 blanks.

Using the Fixture Ticker, here is how they stack up:
      GW 23-25 Overall
      Southampton 1st
      Man United 2nd
      Man City 4th
      Arsenal 8th

      GW 27
      Man United 4th
      Man City 5th
      Southampton 8th
      Arsenal 18th

With those first three in particular, avoiding them now because of blanks later might give you a bit of an advantage for 1-2 gameweeks but might cause you to miss an overall picture that is actually pretty appealing still for the other 4 gameweeks. Plus, they will be valuable assets later on when they have their DGWs.

I think it was Perchinho who posted earlier this season that the AFCON panic that appeared here in early December might have prompted owners to forego players like Mane and Zaha who were in great form before they left.

We do, after all, get to make transfers every week.

4: Sanchez Aguero Ibra and Valencia

May switch Valencia to Walker or Baines after this week.

Probably Switch Aguero to Costa after gw25

      Ibra may become Lukaku

Sanchez will probably stick if possible as bought for 10.9...

Saving transfer this week for now...

If I sell Sanchez and buy him back after the blank, it will cost me 0.1. Doing that with Ibra will cost 0.2. That's not much to have heavy hitters playing instead of on the bench.

If Stanislas is to become 5th midfielder I'd take T Carroll instead and invest the 1.0m elsewhere.

Stanislas is not an attractive buy. Zaha much more attractive as a 4th midfielder considering his upcoming schedule so he would be in a battle with Caroll & Davies for the 5th spot.

I would prefer either of the above with the extra funds

Nah, Chelsea rate him highly. Conte puts him in front of Batshuayi actually. A loan with regular games might be good for him but Conte wants to keep him in the squad.

It's an interesting transition with these young players coming through at Chelsea. The club have had enormous success at youth level and have a crop of excellent prospects emerging. In the past they would have signed players and thus blocked the route for the youngsters but they are trying to avoid that.

That's one reason why Aké was brought back. In the past Chelsea would just have signed someone to provide some defensive cover. But they don't want to block Christensen and Aké out.

No. Southampton v Arsenal for definite, City v United will be the other most probably.

Chelsea have Swansea which looks the plum game of the round, selling Hazard and not having a route back could be key in this period.

Sell Gibson (4.9m) and buy Yoshida (4.2m) to bank some money or find another way?

Yoshida now has at least one blank, I would start planning for GW26 and 28 now.

So with Bellerin,Sanchez and Giroud + Aguero
it would be stupid to bring Zlatan this week right?
(Belle and Gru will become Baines and Lukaku next gw but still)
I hoped to have Zlatan captain this gw as ML differential but...

From GW24 until 26, you will have 3/4 FTs depending on whether you are carrying any over into this week and into the next.

I'd take a look at your team and bench. If (using those FTs) you can ensure 11 nailed players for GW26. Zlatan (c) could be worth it in the short term

    On a wildcard, any thoughts?

    Foster

    Alonso, McAuley, Coleman, Jones
    Alli, Sanchez, Eriksen, Phillips
    Ibra - Giroud

Subs: Jaku, T.Davies, A. Carroll, Amat

2,2ITB can upgrade Carroll for Lukaku next GW.

    Looks alright?

So Arsenal, Southampton, Burnley, Hull, United and City for GW26 and all teams but Everton, West Brom, West Ham and Bournemouth for GW28?

    a) Mirallas
    b) Barkley

prefer Mirallas goal threat but he never plays 90 mins which is annoying

I think A, better field position, and cheaper which is going to become vital changing these bench fodder guys to playing targets for BGW's
