After we sifted through those teams treated to a favourable schedule over the next four-to-six Gameweeks back on Thursday, it’s now time to analyse the sides who come packaged with a health warning for the forthcoming spell.

The pitfalls of potential blanks due to the EFL Cup final and the FA Cup sixth round in Gameweek 28 play a key part in our thinking, with Liverpool and Sunderland facing the sternest examination.

Liverpool

(CHE, hul, TOT, lei, ARS, BUR)

While the Reds enjoy six of their next nine Gameweek outings at Anfield, it’s the fact that they host fellow top four sides Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal in their next three at home that gives cause for concern.

Goals may certainly be harder to come by in those fixtures, and that’s a key factor, despite their other three matches on the current slate appearing favourable.

In addition, with the Gameweek 28 home fixture with Burnley still in doubt, that raises major concerns on Liverpool’s schedule.

Saturday’s shock defeat to Wolves does little to secure that Gameweek 28 fixture, as Burnley sealed passage to the fifth round draw with victory over Bristol City in their own tie. Much will depend on the Clarets’ faith in Monday evening’s draw.

Regardless, with form also faltering, neither Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are screaming out for investment, with Fantasy managers likely to park their interest in Liverpool’s attack until Sadio Mane is settled following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.

With Senegal eliminated on Saturday evening, we could even see Mane considered for the Gameweek 23 meeting with Chelsea, although a run-out against Hull City next weekend would seem more likely.

Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea have scored 12, 11 and nine goals respectively over the last four Gameweeks, so given the erratic form of the Liverpool defence, it’s difficult to see them keeping clean sheets in any of those matches.

Their other three ties could yield shut-outs, but of those three, it’s the Burnley clash that appears the most favourable, which, as discussed, remains in doubt.

Sunderland

(TOT, cpl, SOT, eve, MCI, mid)

The prospects for the Black Cats’ attack, in particular, is a real concern given that they face strong defences such as Spurs and Everton in the next six. Their remaining fixtures also look far from straightforward.

Sam Allardyce may yet introduce some improved resilience to the Crystal Palace defence and, although Manchester City have shown vulnerability at the back, they still could still limit the number of chances Sunderland can create purely by controlling possession.

The Middlesbrough fixture in Gameweek 28 will test the Black Cats cutting edge, and that may even be postponed should the Teessiders progress to the FA Cup fifth round.

As their key Fantasy asset, Jermain Defoe is already the third most sold player ahead of Gameweek 23. That’s harsh on the forward given the level consistency he’s provided, but it’s perhaps understandable when you factor in the fixtures ahead.

As ever, David Moyes’ side also seem unlikely to keep goals out at the other end. Spurs, Everton and City have to be backed to breach the Black Cats’ porous defence which remains riddled with absentees and uncertainty.

Papy Djilobodji is now suspended for the next four matches, while Patrick van Aanholt appears on the verge of sealing a move to relegation rivals Palace.

The Dutchman could face his former club when the two sides meet in Gameweek 24 and, given Palace’s position in the table, this promises to be a crunch fixture for both teams.

That perhaps only leaves only the Southampton and Middlesbrough encounters as reasonable possibilities for defensive returns.

Stoke City

(EVE, wba, CPL, tot, MID, mci)

The Potters endure a tricky upcoming schedule, with the Gameweek 26 trip to White Hart Lane looking the most daunting, while they could also face a blank in Gameweek 28 should Manchester City progress past the FA Cup fifth round.

Both Spurs and Everton rank among the most impressive backlines over the past few weeks, so Stoke’s attack will be severely tested in those match-ups.

Elsewhere, none of the Potters’ other fixtures really stand out as a favourable encounter.

Those owning a Stoke attacking option may hold with more pressing transfers scheduled, though the likes of Peter Crouch and Joe Allen will likely struggle to repay such faith.

Bearing in mind that West Brom have been prolific at The Hawthorns – scoring 15 goals in their last six at home – Stoke also look to have four matches where clean sheets seem unlikely. Certainly, they will be backed to concede in ties with Everton, Spurs and City.

Lee Grant’s owners may be content to keep faith in the hope of save points and shut-outs against Palace and Middlesbrough, but there looks to be little appeal in recruiting from Mark Hughes’ backline, with Erik Pieters’ 6.7% ownership likely to be considering their options.

Also be wary of…

Arsenal
The Gunners have a blank in Gameweek 26 due to the postponement of their match against Southampton as a result of Saints’ progress to the EFL Cup final, while they also face tough away clashes at Chelsea and Liverpool in the next four.

Also, having sealed passage to the FA Cup fifth round draw, the plum Emirates Gameweek 28 encounter with Leicester City is also in big doubt, potentially giving Arsenal two blanks in the space of three Gameweeks.

That clearly creates concern for those owning assets both in defence and attack: only a kind run of home matches keeps them from being written off over the next month.

The Arsenal rearguard will certainly be tested by Chelsea and Liverpool, leaving the home clashes with Watford and Hull City as the key remaining fixtures for those holding Laurent Koscielny (18.2%) and Hector Bellerin (14.8%).

While the possibility of two blanks will dent Alexis Sanchez’ stock, many of his 37.6% ownership will likely look to hold as their default option, hoping he can maintain his stunning away form at both Chelsea and Liverpool. Again, the two guaranteed Emirates meetings with Hull and Watford will be cited as vital as a source of potentially big returns.

Despite the emphatic form shown by the fit-again Theo Walcott at St Mary’s on Saturday, outside of the Sanchez option, interest in Arsenal’s squad comes with a major caveat, at least until we have further clarity on the Gameweek 28 scenario.

Southampton
Saints have the confirmed blank in Gameweek 26, while their Gameweek 28 home fixture against Manchester United also remains at risk.

The Red Devils are expected to progress past Wigan Athletic today to claim passage into the fifth round draw.

However, those holding Southampton assets will still look on the short-term schedule (swa, WHM, sun) and feel optimistic of returns.

But Virgil van Dijk’s likely absence through injury certainly lessens the potential of defensive points, while we are still waiting for a Saints attacker to show enough consistency to warrant serious consideration.

Rotation remains a key concern among Claude Puel’s charges, and the situation is not helped by their EFL Cup final appearance. It’s a factor that could influence the teamsheet for the Gameweek 25 trip to Sunderland, prior to the Wembley showpiece.

Bournemouth
Eddie Howe’s side face a difficult stretch of matches (eve, MCI, wba, mun) following Tuesday night’s home encounter against Palace, with Cherries’ assets looking likely to struggle for returns in the coming Gameweeks.

There is a major positive regarding Bournemouth players, though, with Howe’s men one of only four sides certain to face a Gameweek 28 fixture. They are due to play West Ham that weekend and, with both sides eliminated from the FA Cup, that match-up definitely goes ahead.

So, while short-term investment is perhaps ill-advised once Tuesday’s plum tie has passed, interest will likely pick up again closer to Gameweek 28.

Notably, Bournemouth follow the home fixture with the Hammers with another obliging match-up at the Vitality Stadium with Swansea City in Gameweek 29.

Who to lose first Lallana or Hazard?

Tough, but Hazard because you could spend that money elsewhere. But if Lallana doesn't play, then keeping Hazard is surely a wiser choice. 🙂

Very tough, seen this question quite a few times.

I might be tempted to give it midweek to see, but I'd personally be thinking Hazard is the man to come out for me as he often flatters to deceive on FPL, and the cash you have invested in him will easily be used to upgrade elsewhere, whereas Lallana is actually really good for the price - you want someone at that price who does something once every other game, or once every 3 games minimum (I have Antonio who does something similar for me)

Aren't you missing one player on your bench? And surely you should play Phillips ahead of Stan? Or have Phillips on 1st bench at least.

Are we sure that Snoddy will start this GW? Otherwise, you could start both Phillips and Stan and have Snoddy on 1st bench.

Snoddy is not on penalties and not sure yet if he will be on free kicks and corners. His FPL-points would then reduce quite a bit, unless he play a more advance role. But I'm not a West Ham expert.

Anichebe -> Lukaku (-4) and play AOA

    Ibra, Giroud, Lukaku

Yep, not bad - I'd be tempted by Alonso actually vs. Liverpool's leaky defence (I'm playing him) but can see in that situation how you should be playing AoA whilst Stanislaus has the fixture.

Wouldn't get in Lukaku for a hit .
Play Alonso and bench Anichebe, Cedric Vs Swansea away won't be all that straight forward with a weakened defence .
Better to have Alonso and Cedric play and hope one of them gets points.

Cout to Eriksen is only funded by Rose to Brunt (or Coleman)...I have Defoe Kane and Baines also in my squad and have a feeling Spurs won't be keeping a clean sheet next game

Don't think you should double up on EVE defence, since you already got Baines. 🙂

That's exactly what I'm considering. Got Coleman but I'm planning to get Baines in next week. Don't see why not. Fixtures are good and both are strong attacking options too.

Depends on how you want to spend your money. 🙂 I already have Brunt, Walker, Alonso, Baines and Friend.

I can actually do Friend -> Coleman, but that would be a lot of money in defence...

      Is this for a -4? 2FT?

if it's for a -4, no, roll your FT

if it's for 2FTs, then I'd say you'll have to be aware of the risks - Rose is awesome in terms of getting forward and Spurs have soft fixtures pretty much 'til kingdom come. What's the rest of you team? Any other ways to finance this move / take up an alternative?

Erm, not sure yet, depends on FA Cup 5th round.

Tbh I think your defence is pretty ideal. Maybe have a look at Coutinho out for a West Ham asset to future proof, or even Mirallas/Barkley to get more Everton.

Think Brunt is definitely your man. I know what you mean about being unsure who goes - I've also got some uncertainty about who to bring in if I decide to get more than 1 spur. Guess reluctantly removing Cout for Alli and Rose out is best

I'd be thinking you're right in downgrading Azpi for now, if you're benching this week you'll also be thinking of benching on the weekend for Arsenal home.

Maybe grab Nyom or RFM/Holgate for Azpi to free up funds whilst also ensuring you have another player in the blanks.

Looks a bit like he's not quite hitting his stride yet in the United team to me. It's all a punt for sure, I'd just be thinking that United is best represented by Ibra (whom I'd assume the vast majority would have) and maybe Jones at the back versus having a midfielder.

Ah I see. Then perhaps Mirallas and Mkhi is the combo here, you get players from the bigger two teams rather than from relegation-threatened (currently) misfiring teams.

If it's FPL as the platform for the draft I'd definitely say Mirallas is #1, then Mkhi but knowing that you have the blanks coming up. I know some other platforms do weird stuff to compensate for blanks, so idk the mechanics of that fully, but yeah now I understand that I think those two are best! Sorry for any confusion.

With Sanchez most likely having two blanks, are many going to sell or bench?
Will some even sell him before Hull(H)?

I'm certainly considering it, he should fund the rest of my team.

Not bad! A little bit risky to sell him for gw 25 though. He will probably end up with 0 pts, so keep a decent bench player ready!

Too early to tell. He could get injured, other players in my team could get injured.
People that got him late will probably sell. People that got him at around 11-11.4 will probably just bench him.

Sell Sanchez just to fund the rest of the team is not a good idea, especially if you want him back after the blanks.

I think he will lose some value over those three gwks so Slumdog might be able to buy him back.

Agreed, but getting him back with major re structuring could be a pain.
But I guess maximizing points in a given week or a certain window of gameweeks is the primary aim.
Reckon quite a few might just hold him , but I think it should be a good punt to get him out if Mane becomes hot .

If thought about carefully, with the right transfers it could pay off
Def going to be tricky though as to who to replace them with. 2-3 weeks should be good time to think of a strategy, what say ?

      It is pretty simple.

      1) Look at the GW28 fixtures.
      2) For each fixture are both of the teams out of the FA Cup?
      3) If yes then that fixture will be played. If no then it depends on what happens in the 5th round of the FA Cup.

All we know for sure at this point is the following PL fixtures will be played in GW28:

      Bournemouth v West Ham
      Everton v West Brom
      Hull v Swansea

Man Utd won so if they win their 5th round FA Cup game then their GW28 fixture against Southampton will be postponed.

You can try and predict the chances of teams still in the FA Cup of going out, but that is all it is - a guess. Who would have thought that Leeds, Newcastle, Brighton, Hull, Watford and Liverpool would lose this weekend?

Yes, I get that. It's just the percentage chances of blanks which is confusing and whether certain teams are completely blank-free or whether there is a chance of a blank in GW28 or 34 or something.

They're based on bookies odds, Virg. They won't be so accurate at the moment as nobody knows the draw yet but once the 5th round is (sort of) scheduled tomorrow they'll be easier to follow, and a little more accurate - at least, as much as bookies odds can be.

Well, Butland got injured during the second half of the season. Still managed to get 132 points.
Heaton is still alive and well and currently on 93 points.
Should outscore him before GW 30, hopefully. 🙂

Hmm, I guess it looks fairly even then
But to play for a Stoke side who always have a better defence than Burnley gives Butland an edge for CS's, Heaton has just taken his average defence and using it for save points .
A 4.5 player on 93 still sounds too good to be true when some costly Mids are only at 110-130

Will propably keep both and riding out both blanks and not wasting 2 transfers on them but instead strenghtening my team elsewhere, also good differentials for mid games when all else have sold them.

Will be selling anyone who blanks twice .
Lot of casuals in the mini league s ESP won't even think twice, they ll just look to maximize points by getting whoever is in form.

Carroll, Llorente seem very decent 3 third strikers in the 6-7 mil range to fill in . Probably for the first time since ever, Carroll actually looks to match Austin s value if that midfield behind him gives him the supply.
Mane, Siggy , Antonio depending on their form in a couple of weeks too, monitoring all of them.

See what is said by Poch in the presser, OT. Wouldn't presuppose anything til then, given the rampancy of "cup injuries" this week for key players (Lallana, Kane)

I'm 17th in a ML i won so easily last year. Ive had so much bad luck, im wildcarding and this is the team i came up with

          Jaku

          Baines Alonso Walker Yoshida
          Alli Sanchez Phillips
          Kane Ibra Lukaku

Subs - robinson zaha carroll lenihan

I know i should save for dgw but i think this team is worth it, thoughts?

Phillips and Zaha in a 4 man midfield might frustrate you .
Also Yoshida to rotate a 4-3-3 like this week, doesn't really look solid.
Unless you have a top record with getting your captain picks right, I think this might bite you later .
            Probably give it a thought.

Can you afford to wait until you see how Snddy plays? He's currently 5.7 and could be gold if he does well in West Ham. 🙂

            Wow, huge outlay on keepers.

Think MID WBA is a 0-0. Can imagine both teams setting up not to lose and cancelling each other out (though as a fellow Brunt owner I'm obviously hoping he hammers in a long ranger to score the winner!)

As Burnley are home I'd say Heaton here.

The whole thing is bang unpredictable, it's why I'm kind of happy to shove 1 GK in and hope for the best (and luckily my keeper, Randolph, hasn't got a blank in GW26/28)

                  Nice one.
Randolph could even benefit more if Fonte and Reid partner up asap. overall Randolph looks a great value keeper to get in , if keepers were given more importance as genuine transfers every week.

A mate. You're covered in terms of not playing Lallana so for me I don't think it's essential to make the move. Personally, I'd be tempted to play Lallana over Cedric as we don't know what will happen if Mane is back, can see that really galvanising Liverpool.

If you gain the 2FTs you might be able to swap out other players later on - remember Lallana has Hull next - that are better. For example, much like me you're lacking Everton players so maybe bringing one or two of those guys in next gameweek with your FTs is best.
