Spurs crash out of Europe as a hot-headed Dele Alli sees red but a formation change and an easing schedule could yet be good news for Fantasy managers.

Tottenham 2 Gent 2 (2-3 on aggregate)

Spurs’ failure against Gent was both glorious and gloriously inept.

An early Christian Eriksen strike, from a Tony Alderweireld ball over the top, was just reward for a blistering start to the second leg, only for Harry Kane to miscue a header into his own net to gift the visitors a crucial away goal.

Spurs remained the far superior side, even after Dele Alli was shown a straight red card six minutes before half-time for a wild lunge that caught his opponent just below the knee.

The ten men dominated after the break and went ahead again when Eriksen cutely set up Victor Wanyama, but as the hosts poured forward looking for a tie-winning third goal they left themselves increasingly exposed to a counter-attack and that proved to be their final, and definitive, undoing.

Much will be made, and rightly so, of Alli’s recklessness, but the match contained a number of positives for Fantasy managers with Spurs players in their ranks.

Mauricio Pochettino had decided against utilising the successful 3-4-2-1 formation while both Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose were injured. But with the former now back and up to speed after a start in the FA Cup, the coach reverted to that set-up and Spurs were transformed.

Alli’s departure and the introduction of Son Heung-min saw a shift to a 4-2-2-1 on the hour-mark but, having started at wing-back, we may now see Ben Davies adopt handed that role until Rose is fit to return.

Eriksen, without a league goal in nine matches, thrived and Kane received sterling service from a team that played on the front foot throughout the match, even if the striker was unusually wasteful in front of goal.

Both players are among the top 12 for transfers-out this week, while only three assets have suffered more sales than Alli. But that exodus could prove to be a touch premature with home matches against Stoke City and Everton to come before a Gameweek 28 blank.

And however harsh the immediate comedown from a European exit might be, the longer term impact on Spurs’ over-stretched squad can only be beneficial.

They boast an excellent run-in, with home matches against Arsenal and Manchester United their toughest tests remaining.

If Spurs can improve upon their profligacy – they had 25 shots against the Belgians, but only three were on target – then there should be plenty of Fantasy mileage left in their key assets as the season reaches its climax.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Walker, Dier (Janssen 89), Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies (Son 58), Wanyama, Dembele (Winks 75), Eriksen, Alli, Kane.
Subs not used: Vorm, Trippier, Sissoko, Wimmer.

How likely is it for Ibra to drop another 0.1 before gw starts??

Players seem to drop slower when they've reached their initial price, but trades accelerate this evening.
That said, I don't think he'll drop. Funny thing is it's likelier he'll drop tomorrow (since many do transfers before deadline).

      Sport psychology.

Oh the opposition are great, brilliant individual players. Fantastic club, blah blah blah.

Moyes did secure the sevices of some everton players recently to help avoid the drop. It might be his way of saying "thank you" for that.

But in the end it is only small talk. Sunderland survival hinges on every game between now and end of season. Moyes and the players know that.

I expect Sunderland players and Management to be up for this one.

They might even get a result.

I would pay no heed to team or management talk.

You can be sure moyes is gunning for EVE more than any Sunderland player at the moment.

    Firmino Phillips Siggy (Sanchez, Barry)
    Jesus Costa Kane

It is Ashley, and unfortunately I have been stuck with Barry since GW1 who is my 3rd Everton player so have to rid one in order to bring in Lukaku.

Could also do Barry to Tom Carroll (has a decent GW 28 fixture) and stretch transfers over 2 weeks to avoid to many hits?

Limits your City DGW options though, if they have one, but then again, Sanchez is holding all the Aguero cash anyways 😛

Probably C for now, not worth a -4 for a keeper - they have to score you a clean sheet for you to break even (6-4 = 2) and then get saves / bonus to give you a profit on top of that.

    A) Coleman and no Ibra for 27 (Lukaku vs Spurs (a) )

    B) Funes Mori + Ibra v Bournemouth (h) in 27 and -4 points

B also means another -4 in GW28 will only get me 9 players in GW28.

Aguero comes in with both scenarios.

Either he comes in for Lukaku which means I need to get him back for GW28 or he comes in for Ibra and I just keep Lukaku for Spurs (a) in 27

Not only is getting Lukaku in and out an extra 4 points it also means 9 instead of 10 players in GW28

Bit confused by your last para, Andy, but I'd keep Lukaku and not use (waste) transfers flip-flopping.

I think it comes down to Ibra v Bournemouth or having Aguero for the DGW. You might even want to ignore Aguero (keep Ibra) and captain someone like Sterling.

I still have Jesus, so a switch to Aguero is a no brainer.

Hey Andy, I'd definitely do it. You stand to gain far more points doing the "hokey cokey" with Kaku

    5. Ephurion
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I'm assuming you'll captain Aguero in GW 27?

Then it looks like a -8 to play Ibra vs Bournemouth without captaining him in addition to Funes Mori instead of Coleman.

I'm a fan of Ibra in 27 (and after 28), but I'd go A there.

          Changes things indeed.

Looks like you "only" need Ibra to net once to break even, and I'd back Ibra for 2 before I go with Lukaku scoring against spurs.

This city DGW is so much easier for us Kane owners, though 😀

After some transfer advice guys, already done Jesus - Lukaku so any transfers will be hits. Have 0.6m in bank

    Foster/Jaku
    Baines/Alonso/Amat/Holgate/Ake
    De Roon/Alli/Philips/Sigurdsson/Sanchez
    Costa/Kane/Lukaku
As you can see I'm more than likely down to 2 defenders so there's a few transfer options

    Do I...

Sanchez - Liverpool Midfielder ? then possibly play AOA chip ?
Ake - £4.5m with no blank and play De Roon ?
    Sanchez + Holgate - Liv Mid + Coleman for 8pt hit ?

Speculation based on Evans coming back into the CB position, Nyom going back to LB and then Brunt going into midfield.

It would mean one of the midfield 3 would need to lose their place. Before that was Morrison but he's been in good form.

B - madness to sell Lukaku and buy back for GW28

madness is selling Ibra ahead of gw27 or having six WBA/WHU players for gw27 with their fixtures.
This is just cuny strategic move which is likely to pay off well.

Not if you're spending -4 transferring him out, and end up spending another -4 bringing him back in.

Even for free is arguable as you could have 2 x FT's going into GW28 and beyond.

A, but personally would think twice about it. Zlatan could do well against Bournemouth and Aguero has been hit or miss (you never know if Iheanacho will make an appearance for one of the games)

Guys which combo scores more points?

    A. Alli (STO) + Eriksen (EVE)
    B. Firmino (lei) + Firmino (ARS)

A allows me to monitor Pool assets and pick between Coutinho and Firmino in GW28. Cannot afford Mane if I want Sanchez in GW29 for Philips.

    Captains

Lukaku - "Safe" as most will, but 2pts realistic

Costa - Really safe as a goal is more likely, but usually 5-6 points

Mané - Differential captain, explosive, Leicester without form and Ranieri sacked I guess their motivation is at rock bottom?

    1. stjohnstones
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

Agree - Lukaku could go either way. Costa = 1 goal, no BPS. Mane could do well but Leicester situation unpredictable - nowhere for the players to hide now that Ranieri has gone.

      A. I am going with the majority. Having Costa and Mane gives you a great comfort. But its Sunderland home. Injuries and leaky defence. With Coleman Barkley and Lookmam looking really good they have no chance against Eve imo.

If Chambers doesn't play, I have Stanislas coming off the bench 🙁 I could end up with 10 men.

If you have 10 men, the 11th count as 0 points
If you take a hit, the 11th has to score more than 4 to even make a difference

I would just keep, Jones had BOU next

similar situation.probably a bit worse as I have Andy Carroll as well.
Think I have to take a hit for P.Jones just to make sure I'm covered. Unlikely to figure next 3 weeks.
Not sure on Liverpool defender as i'd probably bench them against Arsenal next week. Got 3 WBA already so maybe Funes Mori for me.

      Jaku (Foster)
      Walker Alonso Baines Brunt (Maguire)
      Hazard Mane Snodgrass Sigurdsson (Morrison)
      Lukaku Kane (Barnes)

      GW27 Kane -> Aguero/Ibra depending on DGW
GW28 10 players currently, plan is to get someone in up front

      Mane Siggy Fletcher Alli Phiilips
      Lakuku Carroll.
