Away goals come back to haunt Manchester City, leaving Leicester City as the sole English survivors in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Monaco 3 Manchester City 1 (6-6 on aggregate, Monaco win on away goals)

A Leroy Sane goal wasn’t enough to keep Manchester City in the Champions League on a lop-sided night in Monaco.

Pep Guardiola talked of attacking to defend their two-goal advantage, but then opted to start with Fernandinho ahead of Yaya Toure and watched his team turn in an abject performance that had them 2-0 down at the break.

Kevin De Bruyne was moved deeper in the second half and City improved markedly. Sergio Aguero was handed two great chances but failed to take either before Sane scored from a Raheem Sterling rebound.

Monaco soon netted again and City never recovered on a night when the manager was let down by his players more than his selections.

And, generally, the players have let down their Fantasy managers this season as well.

City’s squad is ageing – 12 regulars are 30 or more – and surprisingly thin, with a cluster of exceptional players, some still developing and then the rest.

Guardiola’s tinkering and a couple of key injuries have rendered the vast majority of his squad as unreliable Fantasy assets.

City have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the league, out of just eight all season, and the only defender in the top 30 for points scored is Aleksandar Kolarov, back in 21st spot.

More surprisingly for such a free-scoring team, they have just two top 30 midfielders – De Bruyne and Sterling – and only John Stones, Sterling and Aguero are owned by more than 10% of managers as a result.

In the absence of Gabriel Jesus, Aguero is the side’s go-to striker and, despite last night’s blank, he still has six goals in his last six across all competitions.

Nonetheless, there’s every likelihood that City’s schedule over the next three Gameweeks – which involves Liverpool at home and trips to Arsenal and Chelsea – would have earned him far more than the 14,000+ transfers out this week, if it hadn’t been for Harry Kane’s injured ankle and a suspension to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Certainly, in terms of league output, Sterling remains the most consistent, with a goal or assist in nine of his last 11 Gameweek appearances. Yet last night’s consolation continued the recent ascent of Sane, who now has six goals and four assists in his last 11 matches across all competitions.

With a (yet-to-be-scheduled) double Gameweek to come, albeit involving the home leg of the Manchester derby, City’s favourable run of fixtures from Gameweek 32 onwards indicates that they will still have a part to play in our plans.

Furthermore, there’s hope that last night’s exit will only lessen the likelihood of rest and rotation, as Guardiola targets a kind run-in to secure a top two finish, at least.

Pep’s men also still have to host Hull, Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Brom. The Baggies clash – originally scheduled for Gameweek 34 – has been postponed due to their progress to the FA Cup semi-finals but is expected to remain in that Gameweek and be moved to midweek.

With trips to Southampton, Middlesbrough and Watford also on their agenda, City at least have the platform to put last night’s chastening exit behind them and offer FPL managers reason for optimism once the testing next three Gameweeks have passed.

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Stones, Kolarov, Clichy (Iheanacho 84), Fernandinho, Sterling, Silva, De Bruyne, Sane, Aguero.
Subs not used: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Delph, Toure, Navas.

Are closer to an idea of when to play the 2nd WC?

If the DGWs are announced soon I think I will use mine over the international break.

I can't for the life of me see the appeal of waiting until GW36, even allowing for DGW37

I've been stuck on GW36 all season until a few weeks ago.

Now I'm almost defiantly playing it between GW30-33.

Do what you have to do.
Every sensible player in this game knows to wait with it until gw 36.
End of discussion. Stop kidding yourselves.

I would like to think I'm a sensible player.

How many points do you think you will get off the bench in GW37? I've predicted 30 for myself but in reality it could be more or less.

If I adjust my team earlier I think I could earn over 100 points in regular GWs also taking into account careful planning for all future DGWs.

Really want to play wc next week over the break. Seems ideal time with lots of teams fixtures having an up turn or down turn, plus my team needs a revamp. But just nervous playing it if dgws not announced as I'm currently planning on bench boost gw34 rather than 37 (assuming there is more than 1 team having dgw)

DGW scheduling is the key for me – if Man U and Arsenal have bad DGW37s, I’ll WC GW36, if Man U and Arsenal have good DGW 37s, I’ll WC the week of the first DGW.

I think a lot of people have been too greedy with GW27 (City DGW) and GW28 (blanks) and backed themselves into an early WC corner. Until a couple of weeks ago the vast majority were looking at GW36.

I think an early wildcard can really work if your team needs it. If it doesn't in the short term then no reason to tweak until the fixtures force your hand. I'm looking at maybe 32/33, but I may wait until 36 if I'm happy with the team.

Obviously that's a very wishy washy answer, but think being definitive right now is a bit silly.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Can Man City recover from their Champions League exit? Will this herald a slump, that coincides with a tough fixture run? Or will Pep's troops bounce back?

A more immediate concern for those with Liverpool and City assets is do we keep hold of the likes of Aguero, Sterling, Coutinho and Firmino or are they ditchable?

    1. Smoky Johnson
      • 9 Years

Im keeping Aguero, Sterling, Mané for this game.
      City likely to bounce back.

      P.S. Every player is ditchable.

Personally I think Sané and Mané are the ones to keep.
Sané seems to be in a real purple patch and for that price, he's worth keeping hold of. Mané seems most consistent for pool and is becoming a big game performer

        Agree

All this nonsense about Mané not being consistent

I can see them doing pretty bad from now on, they didn't show much form last couple weeks, imo they played very bad their last two league games vs Sun and Sto. Maybe Sane and Sterling could be ok considering their price but thats about it. Kun not so good option considering his price.

Made my plan to ditch Aguero after this week more solid. Think City continue to lack a bankable asset. Best bet is Sterling or Sane on price, but either could be benched and too much uncertainty over their form against tough opposition. This weekend will be a good gauge.

    9. Still Unsure
        8 years, 11 months ago

Sterling is going for a Spurs mid this week, just need to decide which one.
I'm keeping Mane and Aguero for now, though. However worth saying that before Kane's injury he would've come in for Aguero and I'd have kept Sterling until he became Sanchez.

        The best laid plans, eh...

I have Ageuro, Sterling, Mane and Coutinho! without taking a hit, my options this week are probably:
        Snodgrass > Son
        Coutinho > Alli

      • jumpinjeffflash
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

I think their form will continue to be a bit of the lumpy side! Earlier this week I did Sterling + Aguero -> Sanchez + Costa for a hit.

This was primarily to shut the door on my ML rivals and make it harder for them to catch me, but on the evidence of the Sunderland/Stoke/Monaco games, I can't justify keeping either of them anyway.

As per recent articles, Man City aren't too hot after European games and you can't be sure how Pep will line up on Sunday (you also have to add Liverpool's decent record against the top teams into the mix too) - or indeed ever!

So as they say on Dragon's Den: I'm out.

I've moved Aguero and Sterling on already post-27, and I can't see myself picking City players again this season.

Aguero is overpriced for the player he is under Pep. Sterling and Sane are good mid-priced options, but there are many others where you won't be fretting on the teamsheets. I still don't trust the defence, and even if they are getting clean sheets you are still worrying about rotation. If they are to have a dgw 37 funds will be limited and City players won't be a priority.

This weekend, who gets more points?

      A.) Firmino
      B.) Sanchez minus 4 points

Like most people on here I already own Mane. I'm expecting Firmino to start but after watching them play Vs Burnley i'm not feeling optimistic. Sure, the stats seem to indicate they do well against the big teams, but in the same breath can't say i'd be surprised if Liverpool only managed 1 goal on Sunday. Really on the fence with this one

Fuchs has been much improved recently, was one of our players who's performance had dropped the most earlier in the season. I'm still put off by how terrible he was for me last time I got him in (2 points total from 5 games: 1,0,0,0,1). So I'll probably go for a United defender instead

I've brought him in on a wc , was between him and Defoe or Deeney but it's easier to switch him to costa or ibra if he's looking stink than to find the money through downgrading elsewhere big West Ham pitch lots of space in behind followed by two two cream home fixtures easy decision

I like Pedro. I also like Son but there's the inevitable international break tightrope.

A really big differential might be Tadic (7) or Redmond (5.8) after spurs, with BOU CPL wba the three fixtures plus obviously DGW upcoming. Gabbi definitely coming in for me next week, as well as Bertrand to sort out my defence a bit, but yeah might be worth a punt on one of those guys in that price range.

Pedro/Son/Walcott/Tadic I'm considering all 4 but they all mean double ups as I will have Costa, Alli, Sanchez & Gabbiadini.

          It's a tough choice really.

I'd have no problem doubling up on the Spurs or Chelsea front right now, and from next week Southampton, then from 31 Arsenal if you can progress it that way?

I'd be favouring Son or Pedro of those options as it's in "punt" territory - neither immune to rotation nor with a rep for playing full 90 and you might not have Son in GW30 after the internationals.

Maybe Pedro comes in? If you don't have Alonso maybe he's the man.

I'd also be considering Sane, btw, with City out of Europe and focusing on the league. The guy is clearly really good and will be central to their attack.. may be worth a punt too.

I'm definitely considering Sane for Siggy from GW32/33. Might be a little too early to bring him in now.

Yup I don't have Alonso. The other possibility could be I just get Alonso and cheaper mid.

Oh ofc, he's like a mini-Mane, gets you a return 1 in every 3 games but can be explosive.

Tbh if you're in the 7.5 price bracket you get what you pay for, so a punt isn't too bad if it enables Alonso who is pretty consistent, even if the price is a bit mad... could go Walker instead actually if you haven't already got him, too.

I've been having trouble finding a mid in the 6-8m price range from DGW teams. Pedro is the standout one I think, but he gets benched too much for my liking, would rather have Hazard and a downgraded 4th mid.

I don't want to downgrade Sanchez or Alli definitely. Siggy is my route to a City mid for the doubles and downgrading him when he's in such good form would be a little silly.

Or I can just get a 6-5.5 and Alonso.

Woops - posted on the older article 🙂

Is this gtg? Really itchy trigger finger about Llorente for some reason, want to get Deeney in for him, but it'll be for a -4. Definitely happening if Llorente is ruled out.

Did Eriksen in for Sterling on FT.

      Randolph / Jaku
Alonso RFM Coleman / Brunt Pieters
Eriksen Siggy Mane Antonio / Fletcher
      Kaku (c) Kun Llorente

      Thanks 🙂

      Grant
      Valencia Baines BenDavies
      Mane Alli Siggy King Zaha*
      Lukaku Costa

Am I G2G here? Will probably do Brunt > Valencia (-4) if Llorente or Baines are injured, since I'm relying on both of them.

      Jaku / Grant
Alonso, Baines, Coleman / Brunt, Yoshida
Mane, Eriksen, Siggy, Lanzini / T.Carroll
      Costa, Lukaku (C), Llorente

      Next week Llorente > Gabbiadini

I think a lot of people have been too greedy with GW27 (City DGW) and GW28 (blanks) and backed themselves into an early WC corner. Until a couple of weeks ago the vast majority were looking at GW36.

Or am I being harsh here and people were always planning for GW30ish?

think the biggest thing thats changed is the form of everton, suddenly keeping all 3 seems a decent option plus King now looks almost fixture proof, Siggy too and maybe even Antonio so theres a core of 28ers that can stay long term

I will be WCing early enough and always intended to. I think 36 is a bit late personally, would rather get the benefit of a WC over 6/7 weeks than the final 3 weeks.

Are you really going to carry a 4.3 un-nailed Watford defender over the next 8 game weeks just for DGW37 against Everton and Chelsea? Even with a BB I would not want him in my team.

Assume King and Gabiadinni rotate, but that means you have over £1 mill wasted on the bench each week that could be used to upgrade others ? Maybe have a proper bench fodder 5th mid or 3rd forward ?

Looks good - here are a few things:

Deeney instead of Defoe I reckon - do a comparison on the last 6 weeks in the member's area.

Also think Davies is a transfer waiting to happen - better off with Cedric. Is there no-one better than Britos?

MNF for Arsenal 32 and 33 makes me think 35 or 36 is probably the slight favourite. Just one English team in CL left probably nails the match being played on a CL night as the Southampton v Arsenal match can be played on a night which definitely doesn't clash with an English team playing in the CL.

I agree that GW35 or 36 is more likely, but nothing can be ruled out until the fixtures have been released. The MNF games could be moved or Southampton could play Chelsea or United if they get knocked out tonight in GW32 or 33

Getting in and captaining Lukaku early vs Bournemouth shot me up the rankings. Selling him next week will do the same.

      Pleasure.

      Heaton
      Coleman Valencia Baines
      Mane Coutinho Siggy Sterling
      Ageuro Lukaku Llorente

      Grant Snodgrass McAuley Amat

£1.8itb 1FT and feel like i could do with a Spurs mid

      A) Snodgrass > Son
      B) Coutinho > Alli / Eriksen
      C) something else...
