Alexis Sanchez is taking his turn as the latest heavy-hitter to cause us consternation.

Brought in by more than 91,000 Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of today’s trip to West Brom, the Chilean produced a typically superb goal for the Gunners that, ultimately, was to prove a mere consolation.

Interrupted by recent postponements, his first half strike in the 3-1 defeat means that Sanchez has now provided a goal or an assist in eight of his last nine Gameweeks – a record that ensures he remains the top scoring FPL asset.

An inevitable transfer target with Arsenal due to play another 11 matches over the remaining nine Gameweeks, today nonetheless provided further food for thought for those holding or considering a Sanchez acquisition.

His performance at The Hawthorns started so brightly – the goal punctuating a superb opening period of the game for Sanchez, full of endeavour and neat flicks.

If there were any concerns surrounding his performance levels dipping as a result of recent speculation surrounding his future at the club, they were dispelled in those opening 30 minutes

Then came the clattering challenge from West Brom’s James McClean, a tackle that delivered a blow to the ankle that perhaps should have seen Sanchez immediately withdrawn.

Instead, he played on until half-time to emerged for the second period.

Unable to impact on proceedings as the match slipped away from Arsenal, Sanchez was clearly affected by the injury, eventually giving way on 78 minutes.

A forlorn Arsene Wenger gave a brief verdict on the injury post-match, simply stating that Sanchez’ ankle “doesn’t look good”, later describing it as in “a terrible state”.

Due to depart with Chile for two World Cup qualifiers, including a vital clash with Argentina, we surely won’t have long to wait until we have a fuller prognosis, with Wenger insisting that if there is ligament damage, he will not travel.

But as we know, Sanchez is a player who refuses to bow to injuries. A factor behind his second-half appearance, his desire to play through pain will also doubtless govern the decision to depart to Chile.

Wenger and his Fantasy owners will then face a nervous wait for Sanchez’ return ahead of a Gameweek 30 clash with Manchester City.

But, there are also further concerns surrounding Arsenal’s form and confidence. On today’s evidence, Sanchez will need to carry Arsenal to victories over their remaining matches.

While this would seemingly guarantee him appearances, if fit, over the remaining 11 matches, we perhaps have to question whether his points output can be maintained.

With Sanchez subdued, the Gunners faded badly in the second period, created little and mustered just two efforts on target all match.

Even Sanchez, for all his incredible talent as a player and Fantasy asset, may struggle to go on producing in an Arsenal side so bereft of confidence and creativity.

Wenger’s press conference comments, promising an imminent end to the speculation surrounding his future of the club may now be key to a revival.

That will no doubt be the focus for the media over the international break, leaving us to monitor Sanchez’s fitness and assess whether the alarming Arsenal malaise can be lifted so that the season’s ultimate heavy-hitter can truly shine and deliver.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Arsenal's match against ManCity might be crucial. Lose that, and they're in big trouble. Especially since a later match against ManU is practically a guaranteed loss, and Arsenal's recent record against Spurs is poor

Erm, no. You earn a CL place by either finishing top 4 yourself or winning one of the European competitions. Someone else winning the EL doesn't give you a CL spot for finishing 5th.

    2 Questions:

    A) Thoughts on picking Phil Jones?
Jones instead of Valencia would give me much more financial flexibility, such as the return of Kane or Ibra, and upgrading duds like T.Carroll and Llorente

    B) Vardy seems to be gaining popularity, but thoughts on a Mahrez differential instead? He seems to be regaining some semblence of his old PotY form

Jones not reliable enough for me. Also, Tom Carroll is perfect bench fodder.

Yep, I think it's time to consider Mahrez, especially if Sanchez is out.

    2. *sigh*

Maybe Rojo instead of Jones if it means you can afford Vardy. So much better choices in midfield than up front right now so try get JV if you can.

PJones always seems to start when fit, injury-risk is in the price, good value.
Mahrez could be a great differential but Vardy looks back, big time.

    Baines* Coleman* Holebas* Brunt* Lovren*
    Mane Courtinho Siggy King* Chadli*
    Deeney Lukaku Llorente*

What should I do with this lot (those * I could get rid of). Any ideas for a confused individual?

Im thinking Holebas (if dropped) and Chadli to Alonso and Hazard?

Foster, Coleman, Lovren, King all seem fine.

Holebas to Alonso sounds a good move.

Then I'd probably get Gabbiadibi for Llorente and Chadli can sit on the bench.

        Cheers for the advice!

I think originally (weeks ago) I wanted todo Lukaku to Gabbiadini at this point but he's to much in form.

I'm a bit stuck but think I'm sure I want Alonso in and if Holebas isn't playing it will have to be for him.

Lovren ain't fine...he's in a bad defence and now rotating with Klavan, no DGWs eithers...ship him for Valencia

You don't need an Everton double up in defence any more...I'd ship Baines for Spurs defence...Walker or Rose when he's back

The best GK pairing going forwards is DDG and Pickford IMO...Foster certainly needs to go sooner rather than later

Need to get a Spurs mid in there, for either Chadli or Coutinho. Probably Alli...watch the game today.

Llorente needs to be turning into either Gabbiadini or Vardy.

...so you have plenty of scope for improvement 🙂

Lovren and Llorente the highest priorities

      They have 1st April STOKE / 4th April SUN / 9th April Everton / 12th April Atlético

Now they could just give up on Everton away sure…or leave one or both on the bench vs Sunderland, to bring on if the scrubs don't get the job done...

If Sanchez is ligament damage, how long might he be out for?

I know he's 'hard as nails' and all that, but the fact he actually played on, after only squirting some energy drink on his ankle, makes me think it can't be that serious. And that he came out and played on in the second half.

If it was pukker ligament damage, he wouldn't have been able to do that. I know.

Ok here's my as a Sanchez owner horrible theory. He is actually hurt and should not have played on. Arsenal medical team will know this but he want to go play for Ecuador as he always does hence increasing tension between him and Wenger.

I tend to agree.....I think he knew it was bad and insisted (so reports go) that he can play on, compounding the issue and generally causing a stir between Arsenal (Wenger) & Chile.

Sadistic theory I know, but wouldn't put it past Alexi, he's a ragging bull at the moment.

I dont know if it's that bad from an FPL owner perspective I think he is honest decent and just wants to play and especially for his country. If so fair play to him could do with some more like him and if true makes me think he really needs to get out all the more.

He was (maybe still is) though? Top scoring defender, even though he missed 3 weeks at the start. And he was priced 5.9m.

Doesn't get more essential than that.

      For -8pts, worth it?

      - Coutinho to Tadic
      - Abel to Vardy
      - Snodgrass to cheapie(5th mid)
      - Brunt to Yoshida/Kone

Alternatively, I can just do Snodgrass to cheapie and Abel to Gabbiadini/Deeney for free.

For those who watched the WBA-ARS game yday, I'd say you should hold onto Brunt.

WBA looked like a unit for the first time in ages, and another day Brunt gets an assist -> Mcclean and R-Kanu through balls for shots against the keeper + Rondon really should've scored from Brunt's cross.

I was looking to get rid, but yesterday convinced me otherwise. It seems highly improbable that he'll now drop into the back 4 as Nyom player really well
