Jamie Vardy arrives late to the party, Sam Allardyce finally finds the formula and double Gameweeks fill our heads with countless possibilities. With these three things, we close the lid on Gameweek 29.

The Player

Jamie Vardy already has his place in Fantasy Football folklore.

Priced at just 6.0 in the 2015/16 campaign, he emerged as one of the most unlikely “essential” assets in memory. Surging to 24 goals and eight assists, the Leicester City man delivered 211 points, including that run of goals in 11 successive Gameweeks.

The inevitable price hike followed, with a shiny 10.0m price tag making unreasonable demands of a striker who was always likely to struggle to match his title-winning output. But few could have predicted such a slump.

As the champions’ season nose-dived into an unlikely relegation battle, it seemed that Vardy would never threaten to enter our thinking – destined to be cast aside as an expensive also-ran.

But Claudio Ranieri’s departure, and the subsequent appointment of Craig Shakespeare, has rejuvenated the Foxes and Vardy, in particular.

The factors at play are perhaps uncomfortable to explore. The sudden transformation is so stark, we eventually have to question why Vardy has “flicked the switch”, but for now we should just look to exploit this purple patch.

Three goals and two assists since Shakespeare seized the reins for Gameweek 26 has elevated the striker, just as our options up front appear limited.

With Harry Kane ruled out and Zlatan Ibrahimovic likely to be parked until Gameweek 34, Vardy can now come in and do a job over back-to-back home matches with Stoke City and Sunderland.

A goal and assist return at the London Stadium on Saturday provided the latest evidence of the revival; preceded by his tireless performance against Sevilla.

Receiving more passes, attempting and completing more dribbles, creating more chances, shooting more often and involved in 55% of the Foxes goals since Gameweek 26, while Vardy’s underlying numbers have yet to reach the heights of last season, his case for inclusion is strong.

With over 44,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 30’s meeting with the Potters, Vardy is picking up traffic with the injured Kane and Manolo Gabbiadini making way.

He may struggle to hold onto to those new suitors once the aforementioned King Power Stadium clashes are done but, by that point, he would have served his purpose.

In a season that has seen heavy-hitters shift in and out of our squads with regularity, Vardy could now fulfill a similar role. Only month ago, even a fleeting two-match cameo seemed far-fetched.

The Team

The impact of Sam Allardyce’s appointment at Crystal Palace has been a long time coming.

Anticipating an immediate honeymoon period, Fantasy managers were put on alert for a marked improvement in points potential – particularly among their defensive assets, with Scott Dann earmarked as a key target.

The instant upturn in form never arrived and, three months later when the Palace rearguard finally show improvement, Dann has been reduced to a watching brief.

Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Watford brought a third successive victory and clean sheet – clear indication that the Eagles have finally bent to the Allardyce vision.

Sadly for Fantasy managers, with Dann frozen out, the key men perhaps offer little appeal as assets.

The combative Luka Milivojevic has proved a vital midfield screen in front of the defence, while Mamadou Sakho has been a stubborn barrier at centre-back and is responsible for Dann’s reduced role.

While Sakho has produced maximum bonus points in successive matches, he’ll be ineligible for the first of Palace’s two Gameweek 34 fixtures against Liverpool, driving us to look elsewhere when considering our options.

On his return from injury, Patrick van Aanholt will undoubtedly offer the best of both worlds – the promise of further defensive returns, coupled with a buccaneering attacking style that’s always likely to produce a goal or assist.

The double-header with Liverpool and Spurs seems unlikely to reap defensive rewards, a factor that could yet see us consider Allardyce’s attacking charges.

Wilfried Zaha may yet edge his way back into our thinking and even Christian Benteke – with a point to prove against Liverpool – could even find a reprieve.

But, as mentioned in This Much We Know, it remains to be seen if Palace can play a positive role in our season climax.

The defensive revival under Allardyce could simply serve to stifle returns from our heavy-hitters, with Palace never truly offering attacking promise of their own while the quest to grind out points remains a priority.

The Talking Point

With the Gameweek 34 schedule now reinforced with five new fixtures, chatter of the impending double Gameweeks dominates our thinking.

We now know that the rescheduling of the remaining six fixtures will come “in or around April 7”.

As a result, they can surely only drop in from Gameweek 33 onwards. With 34 fully stocked, we have a limited window to fit the remaining matches.

It appears that five can slot into Gameweek 37, scheduled for May 16 and 17 – avoiding any clash with UEFA semi-final fixtures.

But that still likely leaves Southampton’s St Mary’s clash with Arsenal orphaned and set for another Gameweek.

As Swan identified in his recent Hot Topic, the smart money is on Gameweek 35 which, while colliding with UEFA fixtures, still appears the most likely destination given Arsenal’s Monday night fixtures and the fact that they would face two matches in Gameweek 37.

For now, this is all pure speculation, but already the prospect of Alexis Sanchez facing two double Gameweeks (tot/sou and stk/SUN) has to put us on alert, particularly with the chips in mind.

Equally, Southampton would be graced with a Gameweek 35 double-header handing them twin home matches with Arsenal and Hull City. They could follow that, in Gameweek 37, with a trip to Boro while hosting a weary Manchester United days later.

We need confirmation, emptied treatment rooms and some clarity on end of season motivation before we can really exploit the possible scenario in front of us.

But, once again, the fixture list, coupled with our remaining chips, looks destined to offer us the opportunity to end the season with a three-figure score and a significant spike in rank.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Liverpool midfielders are a horrible thing.

You don't want them when you have them but every now and again they explode. Haven't had one explode on me all season.

Own Coutinho and Mane but I want Eriksen/Alli.

One of each would do here but which to get rid for which?

I'm happy about owning them as someone who's lagging behind (still outside 1M). The argument for Spurs is stability and consistency, but when you average out Liverpool v Spurs, you find they're pretty similar, but you get the added excitement of owning Mane and another explosive pool mid.

I have more faith in Mane than Spurs mids, but less faith in Firmino. But the difference isn't enough to warrant a transfer at this point due to fixtures and priorities. And it's just too hard to call who will do the best

    England team discussion topic.

Is this mental? (I realise that it will never happen)

FA pays decent players to represent England professionally. They may only be Championship standard players whose contracts are expiring, or players like Rooney who are approaching the end of their careers and don't want the hassle of a new club and fancy a new challenge. The standard would be lower than top tier international standard but they would train together all year round and work on tactics and strategies. It would be a fascinating experiment!

I don't think there'd be enough public interest for this, I like the concept and as you said it would never happen anyways.

Possibly a reserve team though. Not that there'd be public interest BUT gets those fringe players through the England door and gets them used to playing internationally etc. Also a good chance for retiring players to keep being in the set-up rather than retiring early?

      1. _Make
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

I'd just love to see what would happen if you had a dedicated team, rather than a bunch of (much more) talented individuals. Constantly losing to and drawing with much weaker teams in internationals reinforces this for me.

        1. GreennRed
          • 14 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

I think a lot can be put down to very talented but overpaid footballers being at the beck and call of their clubs. For many international players pride in their country's jersey is secondary because their clubs are their employees.

Not sure about other rugby nations but in Ireland they're contracted to the national team and those who play abroad are not picked. Wouldn't happen in soccer but the clubs are told by IRFU when to rest players. Not that it has done us much good in 2017!

All-Star teams loaded with talent (see, National teams) often won't perform as well as a team that plays together, has less talent (not a lot), and works as a unit. This experiment would create a team at least as good as the national team, and potentially, better.

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards selling Aguero for Vardy. 2 great fixtures for Leicester ahead, Aguero has only picked up 1 bonus point in his last 8 matches or so, and it leaves me with enough money itb to upgrade COutinho to Sanchez

Ah he is but I think I have to prioritize Valencia. If I had an extra wildcard I'd look to bring him in but it would be for a hit if I tried it now.

I don't think he's a very good defender but he's so comfortable on the ball in the final 3rd. Most of the other wing-backs appear a bit panicky and lose their composure, he doesn't, and that is my fear... I'm opening the wallet, the moths are flying out lol gl bud 😉

I probably would. Or potentially Sterling > Eriksen?

I just think there's no reason to have four 5.5m+ defenders unless you plan on playing all of them consistently.

How much better is Alli than Pedro as an FPL asset? Is he really worth the extra? The main reason I'd choose Alli is his security in staring XI, but I'm not sure that's enough...

pedro likely to share goals with costa, willian, hazard, alonso, cahill and everyone else whereas alli sort keeps them for himself now that kane is gone and probably gives one or two to eriksen.

      Alli PPM: 6
      Pedro PPM: 5

Pedro 3 more sub appearances and substantially cheaper. It's not that obvious surely. Alli shares goals too

      1. fedolefan
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

PPM don't really mean too much too be honest. Security of starts is everything. Can you look up Fabregas' PPM and compare it to Pedro?

Sorry, but this is a nonsense retort. We are obviously talking security of starts for players with attacking points potential.

                • 12 Years
                9 years, 3 months ago

PPM potential is fairly similar if they play 90, but Pedro gets subbed early and has serious competition from Willian. He is racking up stats and points, yes, but he's been subbed after racking up points on 70 minutes, 64 minutes. There's really only so much you can do in that time. It's worked out well so far, but it's kinda like Walcott. Can match Alli's points potential, likely to play lesser minutes than Alli minutes wise and more likely to be rotated/dropped and hence blank. Is that worth a 1.9m in savings? Depends.

                1. Deulofail
                  • 10 Years
                  9 years, 3 months ago

The situation can only get worse for pedro if he is dropped. But if he starts, he'll either get 70 mins as usual or the full 90. If he can pull off a good PPM with 70 mins and 5 sub appearances earlier in the season, then there's no real reason to expect less going forward (unless of course you expect him to rotate with, or lose his place to, Pedro). I think he's more nailed than ever though, perhaps until they've won the league on mathematically.

    Hi all

Bit stuck. Want to do a -4 max but could do 3 potential transfers.

Defender out is RFM, Mid is Antonio and FWD is Llorente. Lots of punts - not getting Alli nor Pedro cos ML rival I'm chasing owns both. Can't afford Costa unless I take out Kun, which I won't unless he's out.

    What's the best duo?

    A) Bertrand + Mahrez (c)
    B) Valencia + Tadic (capt Kaku/Kun)
    C) Vardy (c) + JWP

Waiting til IB over but Antonio looks to be out for 30, so he has to go - I think any of these look good, but I'm thinking of B provided Valencia is back from internationals.

    Thanks!

Don't like the Mahrez (c) mate. He could be a good MF pick for the run-in as Lei still have to have to make 40 safe (Looking for a Lei pick myself, but for who - Siggy?), but too much of a gamble against an in-form up-front Alli.

Plenty of time as you say, but the reason I recommend the post is; hopefully you can have Alli and a also a good diff ...

Not too shabby, looking good for 37, but looking to bring in Valencia & 'possibly...' Ibra for 34.

Also thinking about DDG for the run-in (good TV) - what's your take on ManU def for the rest of the season?

Provided he's back from IB ok Valencia will be near essential I reckon, hence why I'm thinking of getting him in, then taking the punt on Tadic to replace the injured Antonio lol...
