Crystal Palace claim an improbable fifth victory in six Gameweeks as they add a forlorn Arsenal to their recent Chelsea scalp. Their wide men inflict the damage, as Wilfried Zaha underlines his potential ahead of the Gameweek 34 double with a pair of assists, ensuring that a lively Andros Townsend remains destined to be a differential. Here’s the Stock Check following Monday’s Gameweek 32 conclusion.

On the Rise

Wilfried Zaha, Andros Townsend
We waited in anticipation of a performance and points from Zaha, and the winger delivered. Two almost identical assists – sliding passes to Andros Townsend and then Yohan Cabaye – provided Zaha with returns and ensured that he grabbed a pair of bonus points.

He has now produced two goals and three assists in his last five Gameweeks, as he begins to mirror the consistency he displayed earlier in the season when we witnessed a run of seven assists and two goals between Gameweeks 9 and 15.

Brought in by 58,000+ ahead of Monday night’s encounter, investment in Zaha will now surely boom ahead of the Gameweek 34 double with Spurs and Liverpool. While those are testing opponents, five goals in the matches with Chelsea and now Arsenal proves that we cannot underestimate a confident Palace outfit.

Townsend is unfortunate not to offer more appeal. Identically priced with Zaha at 4.8, the former Spurs winger seems unlikely to garner attention despite impressing with a goal and an assist in Monday night’s encounter. He’s now produced two goals and two assists in his last five Gameweeks, but will doubtless be overlooked while Zaha grabs the attention.

Luka Milivojevic
Stroking home Palace’s second-half penalty, the Serbian presents a possible budget differential for Gameweek 34 for those unable to stretch to Zaha. Priced at just 5.0, Milivojevic has shown intent from range and Sam Allardyce confirmed post-match that he has even assumed duties from both direct free-kicks and penalties on establishing his starting role as a midfield anchor man.

“It was done a couple of weeks ago based on what he can do with a free-kick, so I’m glad he’s stepped up and took it because we’ve been very suspect on a few of them this season, and he tucked it in the bottom corner brilliantly.”

Wayne Hennessey, Joel Ward
While Mamadou Sakho is undoubtedly the key figure in the hugely improved Palace defence, the Liverpool loanee will miss the first of the Eagles’ double Gameweek fixtures against his parent club. That could have us searching for alternatives in Sam Allardyce’s defence, with keeper Wayne Hennessey and full-back Joel Ward perhaps the most likely contenders.

Palace have now kept four clean sheets from their last six, shutting out an Arsenal team that had scored in their previous 20 matches prior to Monday night. The buccaneering Patrick van Aanholt would ideally be our key target. But he’s still troubled by an ankle injury and his absence, together with doubts surrounding the Eagles’ centre-backs, may have us turning to Hennessey and Ward instead.

In Decline

Alexis Sanchez
Once again a peripheral figure on the left flank, Sanchez was unable to exert any real influence on a hugely disappointing Arsenal.

With Danny Welbeck starting in the central striker role for the last five Gameweeks, Sanchez has mustered just a single goal and assist. He’s now blanked in three successive Gameweeks for the first time this season – just as we look to the heavy-hitter ahead of Arsenal’s incoming double fixtures.

Despite Arsenal having eight matches left to play, Sanchez’s owners will be fidgeting wildly and considering their options.

It would seem almost unfeasible that Arsene Wenger will let the situation with Sanchez and the Arsenal attack continue. Having seen the Chilean excel in the central striker role earlier in the campaign, we could see Wenger revert to that set-up at Middlesbrough in Gameweek 33.

However, given Arsenal’s alarming malaise and chronic lack of confidence, there is still every reason to question the huge funds tied up in Sanchez as part of our squads.

Christian Benteke
Benteke was a major handful for the Arsenal defence and it seems almost remiss to lower his stock following such a performance.

However, Benteke missed out on attacking returns in the 3-0 defeat and, with Milivojevic claiming spot-kick duties, the striker’s prospects took a minor knock – Benteke had also missed penalties in Gameweeks 8 and 18 earlier in the season.

There can be no question that Zaha has now been established as the primary attacking target for Palace but, despite Monday’s setback, Benteke remains firmly in our thinking – his six shots on goal, five from within the box, against the Gunners demonstrates his menace.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I ended up doing Mahrez and Llorente -> Hazard and Barnes (-4) instead. Worked out very well
Also, I'm once again glad I chose Bailly over the more popular Valencia XD

      Smooth:
Got into the top 100 for April. Scored over 100pts for the first time this season.
      Rough:
Sold Mkhitaryan and Vardy for a -8 hit, would have done even better without making any changes (Son would remain captain, instead I put the armband on my new acquisition: Ibra)
      Benched Zaha and Yoshida.

Valencia and Walker no show for 0 points. Auto Sub in Brunt for 1 and no other auto subs because Maguire is injured.
Somehow missing a benched 9pt Josh King.
2nd red Red arrow in two weeks.

      Smooth:

      Very entertaining week for me.

Rough. Taking out Lukaku for OR.

Smooth. Successfully guessed my rival would bring in Kun (c) so matched him by taking out Sanchez and Lukaku in my game plan of shutting out my rival over playing for OR.

Rough. Had Walker, Valencia, Carroll as non starters and put Coutinho last on my bench.

Smooth. My bench stepped up with auto subs and I finished on 89(-4). 20pts more than my rival.

Smooth - pretty much everything else: 101 all out with no hits (a rarity for me!), Aguero (c), Ibra, Lukaku, Son, Alli, Alonso, Bertrand and even a cheeky Stephens 9 pointer off the bench 🙂

Rough: Turns out i should have started Stephens and benched Sanchez, I'll never learn....

      Rough:

No Lukaku, no Ibra, no Aguero, no Hazard, went a week too early on Kane, Valencia didn't turn up, Llorente, Siggy and Sanchez blanks.

      Smooth:

My differentials saved me! Zaha and Sterling bringing home the points. Captained Alli. Full trio of defensive points from Heaton, Alonso, and Barragan autosub because...I played AoA!

I mixed week of incredible ups and downs that put me through the mill (no pun intended). Ended on 68 (-4), which was good damage limitation in the end, and I'm fairly well placed with my team for the remaining games.

Smooth : Back to green arrow land 🙂
      Keeping Coutinho despite the doubt
Cedric coming out of the bench with a CS for Walker
Lukaku, Aguero, Alli, Alonso and Heaton coming good (again)

Rough : Walker not playing for the second time in the 3 GWs I had him this season :-), De Roon in doubt now for 34

In between : Sanchez and Siggy keeps blanking

It will be either selling Siggy for Zaha this week or saving FT for GW34.

Smooth: Took Sterling out after being in and out the team, brought Zaha in before his price rise. Enjoyed watching him repay me with more points than Sterling got this week.

Smooth - everything in an attacking sense! Best gameweek of the season for me - 83 points with no hits. Aguero (c), Ibra and Lukaku all scored well, ably backed up by King and Alli in midfield. Zaha's performance last night was the icing on the cake.

Rough - defence is still causing issues (Valencia especially), and Siggurdson is a now a serious worry.

Rough; Mawson instead of Yoshida in my starting eleven after switching them one our before deadline. Sanchez was a little disappointment too.
Smouth; no Valencia meant that Yoshida went in with his 9 points after all. Pretty much everthing was smooth, but the best part being that King goal vs Chelsea which ruined a double CS for my rival and I got 9 points so that really swinged it in my direction. Walker no show also great for me as my rival has him and only got 1 points from his replacement from the bench.

Are we seeing a direct swap from Sanchez to Hazard, or now with many big hitters up front are we seeing a change in formation so we can accommodate the likes of Kane, Zlatan, and Lukaku?

I hope so. The fluctuations are fantastic - Lukaku blanks for two weeks and people are talking about a slump, likewise Alexis for three weeks.

The more people jump off Sanchez, the less will hold him for his DGW and hopefully an explosion both in his output and my upwards ranking trajectory.

At what stage do people start wondering if Hazard's output will be affected by Chelsea securing the league? And - in contradiction to my hopes and above point - do we start talking about Sanchez putting the cue in the rank once Arsenal cannot make the CL spots?

      For GW34, Lukaku vs Sanchez?

Most of us will want Kane + Ibra for GW34, and this will likely mean we have to choose between Lukaku and Sanchez.

If you have a WC left, it will mean a short term decision, with Sanchez possibly having the better fixtures if the DGW is in GW35. With no WC, it will mean Sanchez has 2 DGWs.

However, more due to Arsenal's form rather than Sanchez, should he be dropped in favour of keeping an in-form Lukaku?

Perhaps the best thing to do is watch Sanchez vs Boro this weekend and then decide.

      1. Philman
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Some just may lose patience and go Sanchez to Zaha this week, paving the way for the big 3 up front for GW34.

This is understandable, if somewhat scary, with Sanchez playing Boro, I prefer to lose Siggy for Zaha and play the waiting game.

Not waiting for Siggy? I do agree with you Philman, Sanchez vs Boro isnt wise to let go from your team. Zaha vs Siggy is maybe a good deal, but Siggy and Swansea has to do something vs Watford to save their lifes and as with Siggy i think Clemente now sees that he plays more in a No. 10 role and either way Watford could be quite weakened if none of their defenders return, so Swansea should get something from this one, i think. Zaha is a fantastisc option too, so it´s proving difficult to pick in midfield atm.

        Lukaku, Aguero, Vardy

the plan was to do lukaku to ibra in 34 and captain. I think ibra in 2 games can outscore lukaku in 1 and dont see any other captain option . thoughts?

I will defo get in Ibra, but all will depend on Sanchez performance away to Boro.

If it is good, then Kaku to Ibra. However, I can upgrade Barnes to Ibra and keep Kaku, if I sell Sanchez.

I can always get Sanchez back on my WC, but I plan to WC in GW36 whether the DGW is 35 or 36, so keeping Sanchez if it is a DGW35 will be another factor

So Siggy to Zaha this week and then just see how the games go.

Yeah that's pretty high. Mine's taken a bit of a hit recently with a couple of injuries not helping. 107.8 so still ok.

Yeah, selling Alonso last week was pretty much the last player I had with bug funds tied up.

By this stage, points and patience with transfers are way more important that losing the odd 0.1m and keeping a player that you think could still do well.

Aguero (Amazing player, focal point of a very attacking side)

Sanchez (team is struggling, amazing fixtures and possibly best player in league - also unlucky not to have scored points recently)

      1) what do we do with sanchez?
      2) the spurs conundrum: who are the players to get in the defence, if any. What are the midfielders to have from spurs and now that Kane is back who should be occupying our 3 spurs slots?
      3) are the dgw clouding our judgment and making us ignore some decent options in other teams? A lot of people selling players like lukaku for ibra but with heavy rotation in the united squad and mourinhos now diminishing desire to fight in the prem as well as Arsenal's poor form, can better value be found in players that don't necessarily have a dgw 34/35/36? Im looking at players like the liverpool assets or josh king or even players like grosicki at hull or deeney as a striker option?
      4)ideal enabler 5th mid?
5)with the rotation we have seen is a cheap defence

*5)with the rotation we have seen is a cheapish defence and a premium attack now the way to go, poor Sanchez form now makes an attack of lukaku, ibra, kane perfectly viable.

Well, Lukaku is also playing in a side which will soon be without any motivation table wise, but your question is certainly timely. Another example could be Zaha vs King; King against Boro could very well get same amount points that Zaha will get in his two games vs Pool and Spurs. And last year in mind we all remember the Spurs guy hammering those with DGW

I have a similar thing with Alli,. Erikssen and Son. I'm leaning to ditching Son but he surely starts in the same position with Kane up front in an easy fixture vs Bournemouth so I'll hold off. In your situation I think I'd get rid of Davies... although I'm getting edgy about Erikssen too.

I played in GW29, and have managed to move from 8700 to 2500.

Will have to see how the late Wildcarders are rewarded, but you simply don't have the time to accrue the benefits of an overhaul (in my opinion).

It really depends on how much of a mess your squad was in before you wildcarded.
If it needed multiple changes, then it was right to wildcard early.
But if it didn't then it is probably better to wait till GW35 or 36 and use it to bring in additional DGW players that you don't need for earlier GWs.

      6) Lukaku or Kane for captain ... And why?

      7) My single gameweek players have a great fixture in GW34. Should I really move them out for a double gameweek player with 2 uninspiring fixtures? Wasn't one of the lessons from last season not to lose all your single gameweek players during the doubles?

With the performance sanchez is giving, is it time to invest in big front 3 or bring hazard in our teams ?
The thing about hazard is he finishes the season on a high, i reckon he will easily outscore out of position, out of sort sanchez

Mark is doing extremely well this season, but there seems to be a lot of good fortune at play; eg points off the bench, etc.

Do successful managers make their own luck?

Yeah and its pity that a lot of people here have started to moan about his luck, even the good ones.

The guy deserves it all coz he plays the game in a maverick way and always backs up his decisions with astute reasoning. I think most successful manager strategize similar way, unless they are having a one off season.

With the good form of both King and Zaha, is owning both key to having a strong balanced squad for the run in?

Does owning both allow us to consider 3 heavy hitter strikers (Zlatan, Kane, Lukaku), and mean 3-4-3 is the way to go for rest of season?

WIth a clear change to everyones thinking now Kane is back, Hazard seems to be going well, Arsenal's major slump and Premium defenders being benched, is there a need to wildcard now so as to be able to restructure your squad to what appears to be a very much newer template / essential player list?

2 FT this week and I've already brought Zaha in for Antonio.

Looking for ways to get Kane in without dumping Lukaku just yet.

Alli Sanchez Zaha Siggy de Roon
    Ibra Llorente Lukaku

    Which would you do?
    1) Llorente + Sanchez = Kane and Coutinho for a -4 (0.0 ITB)
    2) Ibra --> Kane (then Lukaku to Ibra in 34)
    3) Suck it up and just do Lukaku --> Kane this week.

I think people get too obsessed with DGWs (to an extent). I WC'd back in January and rose from 300k to 50k. Ok, I now will "only" get about 9 DGW players in for GW37 bench boost, but I don't think that will cost me 250k places...

Spot on. You're doing great too. Many will end up in a Wildcard with good players in poor form against seemingly poor opposition when many lesser lights with single games could bring just as many points.

Wasn't Harry Kane the one last season? Deserted by thousands for a striker with a double and then scored big. Heck, it's always a bit of a gamble - if we knew what every team/player was going to do, it would be a boring game

DG weeks can be over hyped, but you have also made 16 transfers since your GW21 WC - so is your rise 'instead of' or 'inspite of' your WC? Would you have had the same OR rise with, say, a -8 in your WC week and still be looking at a big WC/ BB gain in 37?

That's a good point, but I have always been a big one for transfers. I look at a player as a three/four week option. hurts more when it doesn't pay off, but the rewards can be excellent. I was also on WC when the costa china story broke, which meant I got a Kane hatty that I probably wouldn't have otherwise

      - Southampton struggled big time against top 5 opposition at home this season
      - Aguero is on a great run
      - Sterling looked back to his best vs. Hull + he is rested

I would like to get rid of Carroll if I were you, though.

      1. Going Home
        • 14 Years

I would love to get rid of Carroll (in a perfect world for King/Zaha and FPL would let me pick two forwards and six midfielders).

Aguero to Kane isn't really a consideration, that's happening. It's the other two I'm weighing up (and will have my hand forced a little by their imminent price rises).

To be honest I didn't see Sterling's performance, but the return was appreciated. Always concerned about having Citeh mfs, this is a hangover from their DGW. I guess it comes down to whether Sterling and ACarroll will score four more points than King and Zaha (with ACarroll as an option) before the end of the season, as they would all be seaon long moves...

It would be silly to do Sanchez > Hazard to take advantage of form & price rises, right? Doing so would mean I can afford both easy on a WC. Already on a -4 as I have brought in Kane.

Kane over the 50% mark on FPL Stats - 55k have bought him this GW.

Second price rise this GW on the cards, maybe even a third price rise before the weekend ... fill your boots while you can still afford him 😉

I know its wrong but seriously tempted by sanchez + Carroll > townsend + kane. Already have zaha and townsend being ignored despite also having decent form. Could also get cout/firmino but fancy a dgwer.

Was also looking at the same but with Zaha instead of Townsend. Think losing Sanchez is a mistake at this stage though with Boro up next and a DGW around the corner. Also Kane could get reduced mins
