A defensive display of some merit is undone by a refereeing decision of rather less quality as the first leg of Leicester City’s Champions League quarter-final ends in narrow defeat.

Here’s how the action in Madrid played out.

Atletico Madrid 1 Leicester City 0

An Antoine Griezmann penalty made it advantage Atletico in their quarter-final with the Foxes.

The goal was reward for the home team’s dominance even if the penalty, awarded for a foul on the Frenchman by Marc Albrighton, should never have been given – replays showed that the offence took place outside the Leicester box.

The visitors came to defend and did so impressively, generally reducing Madrid to pots at goal from long distance. But the Foxes rarely strung more than a few passes together all night and of the five shots they managed, none of them were on target.

Atletico only worked Leicester keeper Kasper Schemichel sporadically themselves, perhaps unsurprisingly as the match involved two teams who excel on the counter-attack.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare named his strongest available XI after ringing the changes in the weekend loss at Everton, with Danny Simpson and Christian Fuchs returning at full-back, Wilfred Ndidi and Riyad Mahrez back in midfield and Shinji Okazaki supporting Jamie Vardy up front.

Yohan Benalouane, who had a fine match, continued to fill in for the injured Wes Morgan, the skipper travelling with the squad as he continues to recover from a back injury.

Fellow centre-half Robert Huth will be suspended for the second leg of the tie on Tuesday after picking up a yellow card in Madrid, which will please his 1.9% ownership as Shakespeare will surely now play him in Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace while potentially resting many other key players once again.

The Foxes’ main Fantasy asset, the 16.4%-owned Vardy, performed his usual pacey irritant role well. But he lacked for service with Okazaki relatively close by in the first-half and was completely starved of the stuff once Andy King came on for the Japanese international after the break to shore up a midfield that had been over-run for 45 minutes.

Vardy’s ownership will now have very real concerns on his pitch time at Selhurst Park after the striker was replaced on the hour mark in Sunday’s defeat. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Shakespeare gave Vardy’s replacement from the bench last night, Islam Slimani, a start up front. Indeed, the Algerian was named in the first XI at Goodison and bagged the Foxes’ first goal.

Despite returning five goals and an assist in his last six Gameweeks, Vardy suffered a loss of 13,000+ owners prior to last weekend’s deadline, with more than 33,000 already ushering him to the exit ahead of this weekend.

Other Leicester rotation risks include the 8.6%-owned Riyad Mahrez  – a peripheral figure in Madrid – and the industrious Albrighton (1.4%), who could be rested against Palace, with Demarai Gray the obvious alternative.

The Foxes have now lost back-to-back matches after winning six straight in all competitions when Shakespeare first took the helm.

A trip to the in-form Palace – one of three consecutive away league fixtures up next for the Foxes – suggests that the dip in form could continue while the Champions League remains such a major, if understandable, distraction.

The Foxes had their double Gameweek 37 confirmed with yesterday’s announcement, although an away trip to Manchester City, combined with a King Power Stadium clash against Spurs, are hardly favourable match-ups.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Benalouane, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez, Drinkwater, Ndidi, Albrighton, Okazaki (King 45), Vardy (Slimani 77).
Subs not used: Zieler, Chilwell, King, Amartey, Slimani, Gray, Ulloa.

With this team how can I get Kane in? 0.8ITB 1FT

    B.Davies, Valencia, Bertrand
    Alli, Eriksen, Sanchez, Coutinho
    A.Carroll, Lukaku, Aguero

My problem is already having 3 Spurs. Getting rid of either Aguero or Sanchez to enable the move is the only routes I can see.

Kun to Kane and Davies to Mustafi /Gibson

Kun to Kane and Alli/Eriksen to Hazard

are the best routes for you

You can also save and hope Kane doesn't score more than a goal too

The second option is one I haven't thought about. Just worried about missing out on the DGW so was trying to navigate a Palace player into my team.

I think from what everyone is saying maybe Sanchez is now a season keeper. If Wenger sees sense and Sanchez scores 2 away at Boro it could end in tears haha.

You're going to get confirmation bias here from people who own either in the answers. I own neither so maybe can offer you less bias, but still a wild guess. Form says keep Hazard. If you have WC then get Sanchez back for doubles.

I'd personally go cheaper. Not much value in that midrange currently. I swapped out Walker this week for Pieters - v good fixtures up until when I'll Wildcard, and he's cheap. So he's my pick.

While we still have a chance of winning the league Poch will play him in every game.

He was injured for 7 weeks at the start of the season and now 4 weeks. He's had plenty of rest, match fitness is the only concern which he now needs to gain.

He's played 23 games and scored 19 goals, I think that says it all, he's vital for Spurs in all competitions.

How about the "dismantling their teams to bring in Kane" part?

If you have the money to replace say Llorente or Carroll with Kane, then perfect.

But the hits are flying around here man. You can see Lukaku/Ibra/Kun being replaced by Kane for a -4 or even -8, which is totally mad.

I agree with what your saying but if people firmly believe Kane is going to score big and are going to captain I say go for it. Owned by 10% a risk worth taking?

Like many people I can either downgrade Sanchez to fund it (for a hit) for my 3rd striker or do a straight swap for Aguero for free. So it'll be removing one heavy hitter for another - along with all the risks that entails. Keep the FT and going Kaneless is becoming more of an option.

          1. Dele
            • 9 Years

My opinion is changing the more I think.

I was dedicated to loosing Sanchez now I'm keeping that would be foolish.

If you can do it with a FT that's great, just comes down to who will score more Kane or Aggers.

Exactly. Nobody is doubting his record or ability. FF is all about timing. Back from injury and as said above by wanyama hes not match fit.

Yeh, some people will regret no doubt.

I've taken a -4 to bring him in

Barnes to Kane, funded by Sanchez to Zaha, and taking a chance on benching King.

Obviously I'm wide open to be bitten by Sanchez returning to form &/or King keeping up his from or bettering Zaha's returns. I probably wouldn't have even got rid of Sanchez that if I didn't have my WC available to bring him back for GW36.

I just thought -4 for those moves were worthwhile to essentially have Kane back.

I have no doubt about that his need to plat. But if the man is not 100% fit (which I doubt he is) then if played he will not be playing at the same level and may even aggregate it further. You can be sure also that once fit he will be doing his utmost for the team and on a more personal level all he can to chase down golden boot leader lukaku. But he can not be 100% match fit or injury free

Ok so my team is currently...

    Pickford (Valdes)
    Olsson - Walker - S.Ward (A.Smith - Lescott)
Tadic - Sane - Eriksen - Firmino (Antonio*)
    Carroll (vc) - Kane (c) - Ibra

    I have 0FT and 1.6m itb

Is it worth taking a hit to replace Antonio? Maybe with Barkley/Davies/Walcott...

Or De Roon from Boro ready for their DGW next week.

My main concern is Carroll not playing for 90!

        Yoshi, Gibson, Vert, Holgate, Stephens
        Sanchez, Haz, Eriksen, zaha, JWP
        Luk, Kane, Benteke

Enough left in the bank to go to Ibra next week.

Will need to ship out the CP boys over the interim before GW37, but I like the flexibility this gives for this week, next week, GW 36, and then ultimately the BB in 37.

Chasing down a 60 point gap, so it's time to roll the dice.

He wants to win stuff not play the rest of his career with arsenal whom need 4/5 big players, defence coach and whatever else.

Missing out on CL for another year also a factor for the guy.

Hard to see him staying unless serious investment and a squad clear out next summer.

Talk of such is cheap and history suggrsts that arsenal neither have the desire or mood for such a change.

I have read about Arsenal looking at other managers and players but seriously while this whole Wenger situation plays out no top player is going to want to join them. Sanchez doesnt exactly look like he wants to be anywhere near Arsenal right now. He can get the money elsewhere.
