A defensive display of some merit is undone by a refereeing decision of rather less quality as the first leg of Leicester City’s Champions League quarter-final ends in narrow defeat.

Here’s how the action in Madrid played out.

Atletico Madrid 1 Leicester City 0

An Antoine Griezmann penalty made it advantage Atletico in their quarter-final with the Foxes.

The goal was reward for the home team’s dominance even if the penalty, awarded for a foul on the Frenchman by Marc Albrighton, should never have been given – replays showed that the offence took place outside the Leicester box.

The visitors came to defend and did so impressively, generally reducing Madrid to pots at goal from long distance. But the Foxes rarely strung more than a few passes together all night and of the five shots they managed, none of them were on target.

Atletico only worked Leicester keeper Kasper Schemichel sporadically themselves, perhaps unsurprisingly as the match involved two teams who excel on the counter-attack.

Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare named his strongest available XI after ringing the changes in the weekend loss at Everton, with Danny Simpson and Christian Fuchs returning at full-back, Wilfred Ndidi and Riyad Mahrez back in midfield and Shinji Okazaki supporting Jamie Vardy up front.

Yohan Benalouane, who had a fine match, continued to fill in for the injured Wes Morgan, the skipper travelling with the squad as he continues to recover from a back injury.

Fellow centre-half Robert Huth will be suspended for the second leg of the tie on Tuesday after picking up a yellow card in Madrid, which will please his 1.9% ownership as Shakespeare will surely now play him in Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace while potentially resting many other key players once again.

The Foxes’ main Fantasy asset, the 16.4%-owned Vardy, performed his usual pacey irritant role well. But he lacked for service with Okazaki relatively close by in the first-half and was completely starved of the stuff once Andy King came on for the Japanese international after the break to shore up a midfield that had been over-run for 45 minutes.

Vardy’s ownership will now have very real concerns on his pitch time at Selhurst Park after the striker was replaced on the hour mark in Sunday’s defeat. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Shakespeare gave Vardy’s replacement from the bench last night, Islam Slimani, a start up front. Indeed, the Algerian was named in the first XI at Goodison and bagged the Foxes’ first goal.

Despite returning five goals and an assist in his last six Gameweeks, Vardy suffered a loss of 13,000+ owners prior to last weekend’s deadline, with more than 33,000 already ushering him to the exit ahead of this weekend.

Other Leicester rotation risks include the 8.6%-owned Riyad Mahrez  – a peripheral figure in Madrid – and the industrious Albrighton (1.4%), who could be rested against Palace, with Demarai Gray the obvious alternative.

The Foxes have now lost back-to-back matches after winning six straight in all competitions when Shakespeare first took the helm.

A trip to the in-form Palace – one of three consecutive away league fixtures up next for the Foxes – suggests that the dip in form could continue while the Champions League remains such a major, if understandable, distraction.

The Foxes had their double Gameweek 37 confirmed with yesterday’s announcement, although an away trip to Manchester City, combined with a King Power Stadium clash against Spurs, are hardly favourable match-ups.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Benalouane, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez, Drinkwater, Ndidi, Albrighton, Okazaki (King 45), Vardy (Slimani 77).
Subs not used: Zieler, Chilwell, King, Amartey, Slimani, Gray, Ulloa.

Got 2 FT and want Kane in for Costa (will wildcard in gw 36)

What's the best move to fund it?

    A. McAuley to Holgate
    B. Walker to Rojo
    C. Baines to Sakho/Gibson

    Thanks.

A would give you two Everton defenders, which is not the best.

If Rojo is nailed, I prefer B. Frees up some cash (and potentially a Spurs spot if you want to fill it) plus the attraction of 2 DGW.

Repost. 2FT, 1.1m ITB. WC and BB left. Best move here?
    A. Carroll to Benteke and save (Heaton + Evans to Valdes + Boro def next week)
    B. Sanchez + Carroll to Zaha + Kane (Evans to Boro def next week)

    Pickford
    Alonso, Valencia, Holebas
    Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen, King
    Ibra, Lukaku, Carroll

    Heaton, Mawson, Fletcher, Evans

RMT prefers A for GW33 and 34 but think the majoirty on here are going for something similar to B

I can't see Everton scoring a shed load.
Bournemouth on the other hand will try to "out football" Spurs.

I'm a Bournemouth fan and will be at the match on sat. Kane has scored 5 goals in 2 matches against us and I expect him to score at least once. The only down side for his owners is how many mins he will get. But will probably get 70-80 to prepare him for Chelsea match. Afcb have no Surman or gosling as a defensive shield in front of the back four so it could be a very profitable day for Spurs

Whatcha reckon? Need to move today on B, C or D due to price rises...

No Kane is a worry, but I have triple TOT already, so decent coverage there. I'm actually quite tempted with D) given I have no WC - Barnes looks dead wood and this one maximises DGWers.

    A) Brunt -> PVA
    B) Son & Ibra -> Zaha & Kane (Lukaku -> Ibra next week)
    C) Bavies & Ibra -> PVA & Kane (Kane -> Ibra next week, maybe)
    D) Firmino & Barnes -> Zaha & Benteke, & bench King (tot)

    Grant
    Valencia, Bavies, Brunt
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Firmino, Son, King
    Ibra, Lukaku(c)

    Jaku, Barnes, Stones, Robertson
    Bank 0.0m, 2FT, no WC

doesn't seem like it to me. The transfer news is confusing for us. £200mil to spend, and klopp wants to apparently double our transfer record. Then we get linked with fulham players.....

Apparently that Fulham left back is going to be really special. We missed out on Alli, who was at MK Dons, and look how that worked out.

I'm not buying into the £200m spend nor do I want to see it necessarily (dependent on net spend). We need a top CB for starters.

we need a top CB, maybe 2, a left back, a midfielder and a top forward, so Firmino can play in behind him. I'm all for signing young talent, but we need to also sign players that are already at the level we need

    Valdes / Jaku
    Valencia Holgate Olsson Yoshida Barragan
    Sanchez Hazard Alli Zaha DeRoon

King imo...he's proven to be fixture proof. Watford have also scored in their last 6 home matches so unless your looking for attacking returns from mawson his likelihood to keep it clean is low

Which plan is better. (wildcard in 36)

    PLAN A
    Gw 33. Costa to Benteke
GW 34 Fletcher to Townsend and Amat to Gibson

Would give me 5 dgw players AOA chip used:
    Pickford
    Walker Gibson
    Siggy Ali Townsend Alexis Zaha
    Zlatan Lukaku Benteke

    PLAN B
Gw 33 Costa to Kane and McAuley to Holgate
    Gw 34 Robertson to Barragan

Would give me 3 dgw players:
    Pickford
    Baines Walker Barragan
    Siggy Alli Alexis Zaha
    Lukaku Zlatan Kane

    Thanks.

Long post but bear with me. How is this looking for the season DGW finale? My ML rival seems to be getting in GW37 double players.

He has a 65 point lead and BB intact but no WC.
I have WC and BB intact.

    My team:

    Heaton Pickford
    Alonso Valencia Gibson Yoshida Mawson
    Eriksen Alli Sigurdsson King Sanchez
    Kane Lukaku Diamande

    His team:

    Heaton Foster
    Rojo Maguire Evans Mawson Walker
    Alli Coutinho Sane Pedro Sigurdsson
    Kane Costa Llorente

Feel like my team is a lot better on paper but he's keeping up with me.

I know he has got Kane and Coutinho in this week.

Think Kane might only get 60 minutes. Should I captain Lukaku instead?

Should I play WC GW36 and get 3xArsenal 3xSouthampton 3xSpurs 2xChelsea 4xOther? May have to get the cheaper options.

The fact you have a WC means your advantage comes from the fact that you don't need to plan for or hold onto DGW37 players, unless you have a lot of value tied up in them (i.e. you got Alonso for 6m).

Looking at the permutations/fixtures, it's clear that a WC in 36 is the most prudent use.

I'm looking at 3 Ars, 3 Chelsea, 3 Spurs, 3 Sou, 3 City. Mind you, I have 108m in the bank.

I think with your points difference, the WC and BB combo should get you a minimum of 25 points swing (esepcially if your rival takes hits). And thats you having a poor week and a poor captain pick. If you play it well, with a good captain pick, you'll have at least a 40-60pt swing on him. More if he has a poor captain pick.

I'd say between now and GW36, you have 3 weeks just to focus on gaining points (whilst your rival has to focus on GW37 players). I like the look of trebling up on Palace (even for a hit; Benteke, (if fit) Van Aaholt, Zaha/Townsend) because they have an extra fixture midweek (albeit difficult ones), but their games either side are great and you don't need to worry about drafting them out.

Thanks for the reply! Need to spend a few hours planning my 36WC. Until then I'll get some short term players.

Is it too much to ask for a Grant 10 pointer this GW, to tip him over the edge for that 2nd 0.1 price rise, before Butland comes in and steals his place? 😀

Tempted to captain Aguero. Southampton have been conceding quite a lot of chances lately, Romeu suspended and Aguero in form.

Likely he'll score, but doesn't get goals in bunches anymore.

Thats still a million times better than Sanchez at the moment, though. 🙁

      You're not alone mate.

Can see Burnley being a tough nut to crack.

Kane just back from injury, and hard to choose between Erik & Alli.

Aguero is getting chances and due a haul, against what is still, let's face it, a makeshift Southampton defence.

Differential captain, but not offf my radar completely.

I know a few people have asked this, but the decision seems fairly split!

Can we have a vote please? first to 5, wins.

TC Kane(BOU) this week or wait for Sanchez DGW (UTD, sou)?

I'd always TC a DGW player regardless, just better odds of more points,

There are other options than Sanchez though, such as Ibra GW34

is Ibra a better option though? He's never prolific and risk of a rest with Europa and DGW fixtures are: bur, cit.

I wasted my BB chip unfortunately... This is my first season so I am very ignorant...

In this case it is a good idea to use my TC chip in dgw 37? Sanchez, Hazard or Aguero(Jesus) have great fixtures, even better that Ibra on 34 and Sanchez on 36...

    Tks

    Please help me out here!

    Grant
Alonso - Gibson - Valencia(hopefully he will fit)
    Zaha - Hazard - Alli (C) - Siggy
    Kane - Kaku - Llorente

    Foster, Maguire, McAuley, DeRoon

    I already did for free:
    1. Costa to Kane
    2. Walker to Gibson (preparing for DGW34, lost faith in Walker)

Is this team gtg for GW33?

Now, should i do any of below for -4 for better point in GW33?

    A) Llorente to Benteke (preparing for DGW34 also)
    B) McAuley to Yoshida/suggest me better option

    All chips still available.
