As the only two teams set to play twice in Gameweek 36, Arsenal and Southampton players are expected to dominate this week’s Captain Poll.

Yet both sides have struggled to convince in recent matches.

Alexis Sanchez – our go-to Gunners option with the armband and the top-scoring player in Fantasy Premier League – has a single goal in six ahead of clashes with Manchester United at home and a trip to St Mary’s in midweek.

Indeed, with two goals and a pair of assists over that same period, Mesut Ozil has emerged as the unlikely form route into Arsene Wenger’s attack.

For the Saints, Claude Puel’s decision to haul off Manolo Gabbiadini before the hour-mark at home to Hull City on Saturday has hardly helped matters.

The most transferred-in player for the previous Gameweek, the Italian – who has a single assist in his last four – heads to Anfield at the weekend prior to entertaining Arsenal.

Having played 90 minutes in each of the last five, Dusan Tadic has seemed immune to his manager’s rotation at a time when both James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond have endured bench-warming duties.

Yet the Serbian’s missed spot-kick against the Tigers – extending a poor run of form to one assist in his last seven – won’t have many reaching for the armband.

Ironically, Tadic is the poster boy for those considering single Gameweek players this time around – his 16 point-haul away to Watford in Gameweek 27 outshone Man City and Stoke’s main men, despite both the latter sides offering two matches apiece.

Nonetheless, although there are certain players with just one fixture that could prevail, opting only for the most reliable, in-form performers will reduce the degree of risk for those who choose to overlook Arsenal and Southampton.

With that in mind, Spurs trio Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen remain very much in the mix for the Friday night trip to West Ham.

Kane has three double-digit hauls in his last five starts and bagged 13 points against the Hammers back in Gameweek 12.

Alli – with a goal or assist in eight of his last nine – and Eriksen (returns in six of his previous seven) offer alternatives as Mauricio Pochettino’s side face a defence that has been breached at least twice on eight occasions at home this season.

Man City’s home encounter with Crystal Palace also heightens the appeal of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

We’ve yet to ascertain the extent of the Argentine’s groin problem but, having found the net in six of his last seven, Aguero has upped his output over the last couple of months. A 12-point haul alongside Jesus away to Middlesbrough – a first double-figure score since Gameweek 12 – highlights his form.

Yet Jesus – the most transferred-in player in the Gameweek – could also benefit against the Eagles’ injury-hit backline. A leveller at the Riverside means that the Brazilian has netted four times in as many starts and his stock will surely be on the rise if Aguero misses out.

Nine goals in his last ten league outings ensures that Josh King is also among the main single-Gameweek contenders as Bournemouth welcome Stoke to the Vitality.

The Cherries have scored ten times in their last four at home and host a Potters outfit that have failed to score in six successive road trips, with Mark Hughes’ men perhaps another side already on the beach.

Jamie Vardy has been Leicester’s main source of FPL points since Craig Shakespeare took the helm.

The Foxes frontman has delivered a goal or assist in eight of his last nine league outings and has scored in four consecutive matches at the King Power Stadium ahead of a home encounter with Watford.

Still floundering in the drop zone, Swansea Ciry need a result at home to Everton, with Gylfi Sigurdsson vital to their survival bid.

Yesterday’s goal at United – his first since Gameweek 24 – bodes well for the Icelandic international, who scored against the Toffees earlier in the season.

With a single goal in his last eight road trips, it’s fair to say that Romelu Lukaku will struggle to garner attention. Yet it’s worth noting that the Swans boast the worst home defensive record in the top flight, having shipped 33 goals in front of their own supporters.

After taking just one point in their last two home matches against Bournemouth and Palace, Liverpool’s bid for a Champions League spot is in danger of dissolving.

Results yesterday, however, should offer fresh impetus for a weekend visit from Southampton.

If Jurgen Klopp’s men can prevail at Vicarage Road this evening, then Philippe Coutinho – with goals in four of his last five – and Roberto Firmino, with returns in six of his previous seven, are the Merseysiders’ form men.

Chelsea’s home encounter with Middlesbrough next Monday night offers armband potential at both ends of the pitch.

Eden Hazard – with points in seven of his last eight – is the Blues’ in-form asset against a defence that has conceded four times in each of their previous two away matches under Steve Agnew.

The Belgian has more goals (11) at home than any other FPL midfielder and bagged six lots of 10+ points hauls at the Bridge

Only last week, Diego Costa served up 16 points at home to Southampton – his highest haul of the season – to finish just one point behind United’s Double Gameweek 34 duo David De Gea and Anthony Martial.

Having earned a first clean sheet in 12 attempts away to Everton yesterday, the Blues’ Marcos Alonso could also be in profit.

The Spaniard – who is ranked top among defenders for both shots on goal (39) and FPL points per match (5.5) this season – will face a travel-sick attack with a mere ten goals away from home in 2016/17.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll ahead of Friday evening’s 7pm Gameweek 36 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I will try to get more opinions on this wildcard - avoiding southampton and going treble arsenal defence.

Avoiding saints defence I just can't see anything for them, if I try to predict results. Tried to pick defenders t.hat have a chance of starting games and get clean sheets

Going treble Arsenal defence - they might get two/three clean sheets from four (despite what the stats gurus on here say!)

Man United VERY defensive game - will be tippy tappy side to side
    Southampton on holidays
    Stoke on holidays
    Sunderland on the way out

    So the team:

    Cech - Big Willy

    ________

Koscielny - lunatic luiz -huuuth - monreal - holgate blue minty

    ________

    Eriksen -Ali -King -Albrighton-hazard

    _________

    Costa-Jesus-Kane

Yes I know no Sanchez - I think he is dreaming of Madrid or Paris

I agree there is a decent chance of Arsenal defensive returns, I have gone for Cech and Gabs with Sanchez. You have invested in the 3 most nailed defensive options.

After my nightmare boro picks of fabio and valdes and am trying to get fellas that will be likely to start.

I am hoping for a 'tippy tappy arsenal' to keep the ball most of the time and have few shots on target.

I had a look at your history and you don't need my advice. Triple Arsenal defence is on my radar. But what happened three years ago? Do you just hate Suarez. 🙂

      Interesting choice.
I went the other side of the equation with 2 Arsenal Mids
Koscielny and Monreal with Cech are a great shout.
We'll have to see how the cookie crumbles.
It will be interesting to see which set up does better until the end.
      My team.
      Willy,
      Gabriel, Kompany, Alonso,
      Sanchez, Eriksen, Haz, Ozil
      Jesus, Kane, Gabbi
      (Pick, Stephens, T Carroll, Holgate)
-4 after doing sanė -> ozil
      vardy -> Jesus

      I do like your team.
      Good luck

I love this site but I wish people wouldn't write these impenetrable nick names for players. Who the hell is blue minty?

Anyway United scoring at the moment plus arsenal switching to a back 5 I've got 2 arsenal defenders as well. Do we think Gibbs is gonna get a run out?

Holgate = colgate blue minty gel toothpaste 😀

Gibbs will only be given a run out if there is injuries or others are fatigued.

I think united are struggling to score because they lack creativity - and they are riddled with injuries at the back which means that they will be on the back foot a lot - more chance of not scoring

Better save TC for GW 37 if you want to use it to Alexis. This week he has United H and Southampton A, but in 37 Stoke A, Sunderland H, it's way to easier games (Stoke and United play good defence, but you cant compare home game against Sun and away South)

This is my ML rivals team: (He dsnt have WC but have BB and TC)

He is currently 46 p behind me!

    De Gea - Jaku
    Valencia - Walker - Cahill - Olsson - Robertsson
    Hazard - Alli - Eriksen - King - Zaha
    Lukaku - Origi - Rashford

    1.4 ITB

I'm on my WC and my team currently look like this: (I have BB and AOA)

    De Gea - Jaku
    Blind - Vertongen - Alonso - Stephens - Yoshida
    Hazard - Alli - Sanchez - King - Sane
    Lukaku - Jesus - Anichebe

I'm trying to block big hitters and CS potential but at the same time i want good run-in players and try to block his potential transfers. What do you think?

Focus more on blocking etc Eriksen?

Okay. Hope this isn't too long winded but here goes. Looking for some expertise on battling rivals as this is the 1st time I've been in this situation.

Leading my mini league by 16pts. He has Sanchez, I don't. I'm happy to go without him this gameweek. Have 1.8itb, want to spend it on Cahill.

Or, should I save the money and if Sanchez comes to life next week, take a -4 and get Sanchez in to cover his potential TC in GW37.

Him vs me is looking like
    Sanchez vs Haz
    Sané vs Siggy
    Aguerro vs Kane
    Gabbi vs Jesus
    Benteke vs King
    Heaton vs DeGea
    Valencia vs Alonso
    Pieters vs Daniels
    Stones vs PVA/Cahill

    Thank you

      Sanchez (1-0)
      Tie (1-0)
      Augero if fit (2-0)
      Jesus (2-1)
      King (2-2 )
      DDG (2-3)
      Alonso (2-4 )
      Daniels (2-5)
      Cahill (2-6)
Looks like you should win most of those battles so keep with your plans.

Not getting Sanchez when protecting a lead over someone who has him and as you say, will likely tc him is a bit bonkers. Get him, capt him and then tc Hazard in 37. Game over 😉

Why are people confident of returns fro an ARS defence, I'd really like to know? They have managed 2 cleansheets in 12 games ... home/away, top table/bottom table makes no difference. Plus, Man U and Soton are not the easiest of games?

We're not.. but a 2xdgw player with attacking potential from a top side is well worth a punt

I'm reasonably confident because United will play for a draw at the Emirates and Southampton look devoid of attacking ideas. As for the 2nd double, the teams are poor.

    Which one?
    A Pedro Gabby
    B Sane Anichebe/5.8

    Rest of attack is
    Sanchez Hazard Eriksen King
    Kane Jesus

To make Zaha into Hazard do :
    A) Mustafi > Gabriel
    B) Benteke > Gabbi
    C) Mustafi > Gibbs
    D) something else

Any chance Mertesacker could re-appear for Arsenal in the double gameweeks?

My head 2 head ML ends on gw36 on the PL website with no h2h games after that. Strange. Anyone else has this issue?

Alonso & Vardy - Chelsea have a great DGW and Vardy is picking up some form!

    Thoughts on this WC?

    Cech, Pickford

    Alonso, maguire, holgate, Stephens, Yoshida

    King, hazard, Sanchez, alli, eriksen

    Kane, Jesus, Anichebe

    Thoughts?

Admittedly quite a cheap defence..... struggling to find any good value between 4.5-5.5

    Current team
    Heaton Randolph
    Valencia Alonso Davies Pieters Olsson
    Hazard Alli King Coutinho Zaha
    Kane Gabbi Lukaku

Is this a good trade for this week?
    Lukaku > Jesus, Coutinho > Sanchez, Zaha > Matic -8, 0.1 ITB

Then next week to do possibly..
Randolph > Caballero, Pieters > Yoshida, Olsson > Stephens, -8 0.1 ITB (Also use bench boost for this week)

    A:Cahill and zaha
    B:Monreal and pedro
If A,i'll bench zaha and BB on 37
if B:i'll bench no one from these two players
