Two four-nil thrashings and a historic farewell ensured that this was no ordinary Sunday, as Phillipe Coutinho punished double Gameweek investment and Harry Kane earned the final Spurs goal at White Hart Lane. Here’s the Stock Check…

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We were braced for a single fixture asset to explode points over Double Gameweek 37 and it is Philippe Coutinho who appears to have accepted the role.

Sold by over 221,000 Fantasy Premier League managers over the last two Gameweeks, Coutinho stepped up to produce his biggest points haul of the campaign in the 4-0 rout of West Ham, courtesy of two goals and an assist.

It was the first time that the Brazilian has been involved in three goals in a single Premier League match, arriving having taken up a new position in a changed Liverpool’s formation.

Deployed in a central midfield role, with Adam Lallana recalled to provide the point of a diamond system, Coutinho nonetheless capitalised on a lethargic West Ham display.

He was a sparkling influence throughout, recording six efforts on goal, while his assist was one of six chances he created.

Liverpool will face relegated Middlesbrough in Gameweek 38 and, with goal difference potentially a crucial factor in deciding the final top four, we have to believe that there will be further profit available for Coutinho.

That is already prompting FPL managers into a returning to the 8.4 priced asset as a final day option. Among the top ranks – who will have doubtless cleared the decks for double Gameweek assets – he will be an unlikely differential, even with his 18.8% ownership on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge
But Sturridge could represent the ultimate Gameweek 38 gamble.

He returned to the starting line-up to lead Liverpool’s attack alongside Divock Origi and set Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way with a smartly taken opening goal.

With four attempts in total, three from inside the box, Sturridge looked lively enough to make a claim to retain his starting role for Boro’s visit.

He will go into that fixture in just 36,000 (0.8%) of squads, although a hefty 9.6 price tag will doubtless prove a major obstacle, preventing that number increasing markedly.

The Liverpool Defence
Jurgen Klopp’s backline has, statistically at least, ranked among the top defences this season without offering the assurance of clean sheets.

Prior to Gamweweek 33 they boasted just 7 shut-outs, but four in five outings since has suddenly thrust them into consideration for the final day.

They could hardly be treated to a more favourable fixture – Middlesbrough arrive at Anfield without motivation and with ten away goals all season.

Centre-back Dejan Lovren, priced at just 4.8, along with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet at 4.7, are likely to be popular targets.

Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen
Kane got his goal, although he was deprived the honour of scoring the final strike at White Hart Lane by Wayne Rooney’s consolation for Manchester Untied.

But Fantasy managers will be content enough with Kane’s return ahead of his second fixture with Leicester City on Thursday.

Now just two behind Romelu Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot, we have to presume that he will remain motivated to retain that gong having claimed it in his last campaign.

Spurs remained full of attacking intent against United, with Eriksen once again in profit as he provided the dead-ball delivery for Kane’s goal.

The Dane has now produced 18 FPL assists over the season – level with Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne – delivering five in his last seven Gameweek starts.

A tally of five key passes in Sunday’s clash also ensured that Eriksen sat top of the Bonus Points System to claim an additional three points. Now tied with Dele Alli on 209, he’s outscored his team-mate by 50 points to 41 since Gameweek 31.

Ben Davies
With Danny Rose sidelined, Davies has been handed a start over the last 13 Gameweeks at left-back and has produced either an assist or a clean sheet in nine of those matches.

Rooney’s consolation robbed the Welshman of another shut-out and likely bonus points but, nonetheless, with Rose apparently being eased back into the fold, Davies looks well placed to see out the season ahead of trips to Leicester City and Hull City.

Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke
Subject to a flood of sales since Gameweek 34, the Palace pair were both key figures as the Eagles eased their way past a shell-shocked Hull City at Selhurst Park.

Zaha and Benteke were ranked third and fourth for FPL sales ahead of Gameweek 37 but, like Coutinho, they were to punish the legions who ushered them out.

Scoring a first goal since Gameweek 30, Zaha snapped a run of five successive blanks. Meanwhile, Benteke was back on the scoresheet following three blanks of his own.

While there will little or no investment in the pair, those still holding may consider retaining their services for the Gameweek 38 collision with a distracted Manchester United.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
With Coutinho delivering at the London Stadium, his compatriot Firmino missed out with an ongoing “muscle issue”..

Having provided three successive blanks prior to today’s absence, Firmino’s stock is in freefall having lost over 130,000 owners in the last two Gameweeks.

Coutinho ranks top for transfers in so far ahead of Gameweek 38, while Firmino retains his place in the top five for sales – only Romelu Lukaku has left more squads since Friday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    deja vu is hitting

I remember a season when coutinho played brilliantly gw 37 going into a gw 38 game with qpr at home. Loads of people got him in, I capped him and he failed miserably

I am probably going to get him in again, lesson not learnt

Bang on Optimus, it was Sturridge who let people down. Coutinho scored that day in a 1-0 win. Carra's last game (hit th post from 30 yards!!)

Two things we obsess over - late season double gameweeks and in particular, bench boost - are over-rated. Bench boost is after all usually two sub-par defenders and a fifth midfielder. The goalie is the best bet at something of a haul, but that's a hopeful one. Late season doubles are always subject to rotation and injuries due to fatigue. Oh well, until next season when we all inevitably obsess all over again 😀

The thing is, from what I've seen no less, is that people who played the early WC still spent points recruiting DGW players, some of which disappointed anyway. My WC last week still provided a boost on overall rank, but my use of the chips this year has been poor. AOA attack cost me 4 points, BB has so far provided 3 extra points and TC gained me 9 points. A net benefit of 8 points. Not really worth spending so much time planning for so far...

Good points, but depends on team value a bit. My 5th mid is King for example 😉

But yes, so far BB has been a failure because I picked the wrong mid-price forward.

My BB has been very disappointing - but as they cost 4.1, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 they enabled my 87 and 82 (so far) so I'm happy enough with late WC, not so much on the BB 🙂

Thanks, so only 19% played their WC in GW36?

Does that suggest that many in top 20,000 might not have as many DGW players as I originally though?

          GW35 was 7.9%
Pretty sure the others prepared well in advance.
Arsenal, S'ton, Spurs and Chelsea are popular in the top 20K.

perhaps nearer 10% if the 9% who used their TC used WC in GW35 to alos stock up on GW37 DGW players?

I see what you mean 🙁

I seem to remember making a big jump last season in the DGW but then again my OR wasn't as good as this season.

Just outside the top 20,000 so was hoping to kick on.

Suffered by 'giving up' for a couple of games just before Christmas as the game is so demanding of my time.

    My Bench Boost so far:

    Pickford - 1
    Vertonghen - 2
    Evans - 2
    Anichebe - 1

    Plus - Stephens & Tadic haven't played.

Seems like a similar story to a lot............

I really agonised over who to replace Coutinho with.

I looked at tables and tables and tables of stats. I read every article.

I bounced between several players and, minutes before the gameweek deadline, I did Coutinho to KDB - a move which required two budget defender enables and a -8.

After all the anguish, I would be 25 odd points better off if I'd just forgot about my team and done nothing.

This one is going to sting. This is a weekend ruiner 🙁

I chose KDB over Sane this week. Ofc, if I had of got Sane, then I would have an easy route into getting Coutinho for GW38. KDB needs to have a haul to repay my faith 🙂

Sane was the sensible move. But having KDB, Sanchez and Hazard in my team got the blood pumping. I went heart over head.

I chose between a straight swap Alli > KDB instead of Eriksen > KDB + 1 hit and if I didn't have KDB, my TC would have been on Sanchez ..... I'll wait to see how much I lose out in the next round of matches before I total up the loss

      Only -40 so far

    7. MTPockets

KDB was ultra kneejerk (could still pay off) but nobody was predicting Liv & Coutinho result.

was already planned ... only OR to try and go for so went the riskier options ... it could all balance out, especially if Sanchez doesn't play, but points in the bag would feel a lot better

          Roll on an interesting week

it was the logical move for me ... didn't want Kane / Alli / Eriksen and given the cash, KDB has more potential than Sane ...once KDB was in the team then is was a TC choice ... safe with Sanchez or punt on KDB

Nature of the beast, you can't predict football. It's all acquired knowledge and then a dose of luck, it's nothing if not unpredictable. Well it is this way when doing poorly 😀

Unlucky mate. De Bruyne is actually quite inconsistent, if you take his price into consideration I think Sane (for this season) is generally the better pick. Unlucky though

Got slaughtered on here last season after using a BB circa GW 7 or 8- from memory, got about 17/18 pts off it - maybe loading your team GW 1 and sing the BB is the way to go - keep the WC for GW 37

Planning on selling Pedro and Costa for the final GW38. Will get Coutinho for Pedro, then I have £9.0M to bring in a forward. Who to bring in? Rooney? Thinking of Giroud, but then I have to take -4 as I have Cech, Monreal and Sanchez.

        My team with AOA:

        Caballero (Cech)
Davies - Azpilicueta (Monreal - Kone - Yoshida)
        Sanchez - King - Redmond - Albrighton - Pedro
        Kane - Costa - Jesus

        Will greatly appreciate input. Cheers.
