Everton completed their first signing of what is expected to be a busy transfer window with Thursday’s capture of Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for a club record fee of £25 million.

The deal could rise to £30 million including add-ons, with the 23-year-old signing a five-year contract as Everton manager Ronald Koeman looks to strengthen an area of weakness for his side last term.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Koeman expressed his delight in securing one of the best young goalkeepers in the country:

“I’m really pleased we’ve made what I’m sure will be a significant signing for Everton Football Club. Jordan is a very talented young professional who also has a real hunger for success, and that’s important for us as we now look to make further progress in the seasons ahead. We’ve seen the quality he has through his performances in the Premier League last season and, given his young age, we’re sure he will get even better.”

The History

Pickford joined Sunderland’s academy at the age of eight, progressing through the age groups to sign a two-year scholarship in 2010.

A year later, Pickford agreed his first professional contract with the Black Cats and was then sent out on several different loan spells.

He made 17 league appearances for National League side Darlington during the 2011/12 season before playing 12 times for Alfreton Town in 2012/13.

Pickford’s development moved up a notch the following season, making 12 appearances for League Two outfit Burton Albion before ending the campaign on loan at League One side Carlisle United, keeping seven clean sheets in 18 outings.

The 2014/15 season saw Pickford make 33 appearances for League One club Bradford City before he had a final loan spell at Championship outfit Preston North End in 2015/16.

That move proved to be a real breakthrough for Pickford, who registered ten shut-outs in 24 league appearances.

He returned to Sunderland on December 31, 2015, and made his Black Cats debut in a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup.

His Premier League bow soon followed, in a 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, and he was handed a second league start on the final day against Watford.

Pickford then established himself as a Premier League player last season, making 29 league appearances.

He did concede 50 goals, keeping just four clean sheets, but was one of the few Sunderland players to emerge with any credit as the club were relegated to the Championship.

Pickford has represented England at every level from U16s to U21s and was part of the team that won the 2016 Toulon Tournament.

He received his first call-up to the senior squad last October, although he is still to make his debut.

The Prospects

After emerging as a fantastic value option in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last term, available at just 4.0 at the outset, Pickford will be expected to kick on as Everton’s first-choice keeper.

The ability to pick up save points and additional bonus was at the heart of his appeal, but his situation with the Toffees will be very different.

Last season, Pickford ranked first for minutes per save (19.33) and minutes per recovery (7.37) among FPL goalkeepers who made a minimum of five starts.

Recoveries are a key component of the Bonus Points System (BPS), an area where Pickford thrived – he ranked fourth for bonus points among FPL goalkeepers with nine.

But moving to Everton – who finished seventh in the Premier League and conceded only 44 goals (compared to 69 for Sunderland) – Pickford will face a different challenge in terms of how he picks up Fantasy points.

Last term, the Black Cats faced more shots (676) and shots on target (248) than any other side, compared to 447 and 148 respectively for Koeman’s team.

The difference in the numbers is stark, highlighting the extra protection Pickford will have in front of him next season.

Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori offer plenty of experience in central defence for the Toffees, while Koeman looks set to further strengthen in that area this summer, with Burnley’s Michael Keane a favoured target.

Everton also boast one of the best defensive midfield players in the league in Idrissa Gueye, who ranked first for tackles among FPL midfielders in 2016/17, with 186, and second for interceptions (83). His partnership with Morgan Schneiderlin could be a key one for the Toffees next season.

It all means that Pickford will rely more on clean sheets to be a success in FPL, with his number of saves likely to decline.

While Koeman swapped between Maarten Stekelenburg and Joel Robles last season, Everton still managed an impressive 13 clean sheets.

The pair made 19 starts apiece, with Robles averaging a save every 32.15 minutes and Stekelenburg 40.10, although both trailed Pickford by some distance.

The pair also trailed in terms of minutes per recovery, with Robles averaging one every 9.75 minutes and Stekelenburg 10.27.

As was the case with save points, the importance of shut-outs to Pickford’s Fantasy potential will be heightened with a drop-off in bonus points appearing on the cards.

Robles and Stekelenburg were handed starting prices of 5.0 in FPL last term and that looks likely to be the minimum mark for Pickford, given that only four teams kept more clean sheets than Koeman’s side last season.

With Seamus Coleman out injured until at least next year, Fantasy managers will be keeping a keen eye on who will start the season at right-back for the Toffees.

Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny currently appear the frontrunners, and should Koeman decide to trust the two youngsters and not bring in a more senior option, it’s one of those two that could provide the cheapest and most attractive route into the Everton backline.

But the addition of Pickford should boost the prospects of the Toffees’ rearguard.

His agility and shot-stopping have marked him out at this early stage of his career, and with an experienced defence in front of him, Pickford looks poised to be a key factor in FPL once again following his breakthrough campaign.

This. At everton he'll probably be a 5.0. Hopefully as HVT says above, he'll go down a bit in price after the few initial horror fixtures and then we can all pile in en masse under him, raising him up to heights he did not know he could attain.

Just in the interest of kicking off some debate I'll repeat what I said a few days ago.

No doubting Pickford's quality at all, he's a great keeper....but...

Have Everton been wise spending so much money on a keeper whilst they remain a little thin for outfield players, especially if Barkley and Lukaku are on the move?....They always looked like they had very few replacements last season when injuries came along (as an example the injuries to Baines/Coleman had them immediately relying upon relatively untested replacements)

    Begs a couple of questions.

Are Lukaku and/or Barkley done deals somewhere leaving them with some major funds ?
Have Everton got much bigger backing than we know about?

This article mention Holgate or Jonjoe Kenny look set to start to replace the injured Coleman. I'm not doubting their potential as players but it just seems they go straight from the quality of Coleman into young fringe players with not much else between the two....

Yes Wakey Everton have much bigger backing. Moshiris billions

Also on a side note Pickford is star in making , I really do think that

Niang Siggy M.Keane could all come for about 60 millions too still

The echo reported he was at Finch Farm having a medical while he was pictured on holiday in the states with Ballotelli. Typical Echo that. Along with the £8m Pickford bid it's no surprise they have no relationship with the club.

In the current market, £40-50 million for a 23 year old English international in Barkley playing week in week out for a top 10 side in the PL is possible, covering most of their spending on Klaassen and Pickford.

Another £80 mill to go from Lukaku 😉

Sandro Ramirez is the striker they're after, good season in La Liga, young and a buyout clause of just £5.25 million. Big bargain to be made on him if he'll be leading the line next season.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What is your preferred spend and strategy for goalkeepers?

Do you prefer a 4.5/4.5 double up of two sure starters for sides that are unlikely to keep many clean sheets but should provide plenty of save points.

Do you prefer a 5.0-5.5 sure starter for a team with a strong chance of clean sheets, backed by a 4.0 bench fodder keeper?

And what of next season with favourites like Pickford and Heaton facing a likely price hike? Where will the 4.5 fans go next season.

Ryan at Brighton looks potentially strong, especially with the Seagulls strong home form last season and the former Valencia man's experience.

Foster at WBA could be another options too as this season is likely to be a bridge too far for the Baggies veteran defence.

And what of Gomes at Watford. Could he face a price drop? And if so does he appeal.

And a final mention goes to Butland - who had a dire 16/17. Will the FPL price setters ignore this and slap a prohibitive 5.0 price tag on the England man?

Fraser Forster might be worth a.look in with those fixtures.
Heaton will again provide lots of points imo and I think he is been little neglected here probably due to his 5.0 price hike next season

      Ben Foster another option
      probably A 5.0 - 4.0 if a decent 4.5 option doesn't come up

Otherwise my darling heaton and a 4.0 option is decent I reckon.

4.5/4.5 normally for me and would have no problem going with a 4.0 in there too as we might need it elsewhere, Foster is on my radar but he so burnt me last year when on early wc I sold Heaton (4.5) and kept the WBA man 🙁

Lasy year I was lucky enough to be one of the few who rotated Yoshida and Baines in defence from very early on when Yoshida beca a pick. That pairing yielded more pts than Alonso for that spot I'm my team (PPG)

I've no idea how that would have worked out if I'd done it with the keepers instead but I suspect it would have been good as well.

My point is that rotating two mid priced keepers (always ignored as an option on FFS) could also be a way to go...even though we never do it.

Jagielka and Yoshida would probably be a better rotation, since Jags has a better home record than Baines, but I don't believe it would outscore Alonso - it certainly wouldn't if you played them only in home games.
Baines is too good and expensive to leave on the bench.

Rotating two premium keepers worked well in 2015/16, but that was a very unusual season.

Bit it did from about GW22 or whenever it was Yoshida became first choice. The few that rotated Baines and Yoshida got 6.5 PPG.

Agreed that Jags would have been better but he wasn't even a pick when he first started picking up pts due to not even knowing if he was nailed on or not

You appear to have started rotating Yoshida and Baines from GW27, playing Yoshida ahead of Baines for Everton's matches against TOT, MUN, CHE and ARS.

There were also a number of game-weeks in which Baines and Yoshida were auto-subbed in for Walker and Valencia - but that was an expensive backline which was only really affordable because of your high squad value.

If Fabianski/Foster are both 4.5, I can't see a better pairing. Perfect home/away rotation and the fixture difficulty in the rotation is fantastic.

The first 16 gameweeks would look like this:

      BOU/bur/STO/NEW/WHU/WAT/WAT/HUD/LEI/MCI/BRI/bur/BOU/NEW/CRY/WBA.

      I've always been a £4.5M/£4.5M double-up man myself.

We all know that it only takes a second to score a goal and, as a result, I'd rather invest more of my initial £100M in players that can do precisely that rather than those that see their CS points slide from being on the opposite end of this adage.

Finding a solid Home/Away rotation pair allows for the potential of clean sheets, while also bringing in save points too.

If they come in at £4.5M, I'd take a serious look at Butland, Gomes, Foster and Begovic. I fear that all three promoted sides will find clean sheets hard to come by (sorry Jonty) and don't feel any of their first choice keepers will produce Heaton-like heroics. TM32

Two 4.5 rotators can so easily get burned when you bench the wrong one. I prefer the £4.5 plus sub a la Heaton/Robinson for 16/17 and foster/myhill 15/16. I'm hoping wba is similar again otherwise will look at Brighton or Newcastle. Benitez will revert to type next season a drill Newcastle into a defensive unit imo

My strategy is to spend as few transfers on keepers as possible. So looking for someone with good fixtures is fairly pointless as I hope they will be in so long the fixtures will even out.

5.5/4.0 did me awful this year. 4.5/4.5 was amazing, and when Grant popped up to give me a 4.5/4.0 rotation that was fantastic. Hopefully another 4.0 GK pops up this year somewhere in the season.

Right now I'm looking at a Bournemouth/Swansea rotation

Hennessey Butland for 9.0 looks good. Palace rotate well with Stoke.

Butland was only able to play the last 5 matches of the season, because of injury, but there was nothing wrong with his form - 4.0 points per game (2-7-1-0-10). He let in 4 against Arsenal, but he also kept 2 clean sheets, made 17 saves and was awarded 2 bonus points.

Of goalkeepers who played more than 2 matches, only Robles, Heaton and Lloris had superior ppgs.

Would have missed out on quite a few Heaton hauls if I rotated him. Might go with a 4.5/4.5 combo if there are any decent options, and then go for a starter and a bench fodder on my first wildcard.

Last year I liked the Heaton/Foster 4.5s rotation, however not so sure there will be that quality at 4.5 this season. If there is, i'll go that direction again. if not, I'll probably do a DeGea / 4.0 to start the season

On FFF the Predicted Player Prices for the 4.5 keepers are:
      Boruc,
      Fabianski,
      Gomes,
      Hennessey,
      Randolph,
      Darlow

      Butland
      Foster
      Heaton
      Forster
      Cech
      Mignolet

Most of you are dreaming with who you think are going to be 4.5s. 4.5s are only from the very lowly teams right? Foster and Forster are going to be more.

Yeah, I can't believe everyone's forgotten how bad the 4.5s were last year. Amat Franics and Evans were in my lineup.

8 weeks from now, the white lines will be gleaming on the freshly-cut pitches, the turnstiles will be open and the Prem will be back. There's really nothing quite like the opening day of the season. What is your routine for the big day? Where will you be and what will your preparation look like on the day itself?

When was the last time a Sunderland keeper didn't pick up a ton of save pts?
Mignolet used to be one of the best keepers in the league until he left Sunderland, and then died as a fantasy prospect.

Pickford will be a very different prospect at Everton, and may not be nailed on immediately. 5.0m - No go. 4.5m - Wait and see. 4.0m - Buy. IMO

          Hm.

Well, the FPL winner is usually *not* a regular top 1K finisher. It's someone who has an epic season out of the blue. Go through the top end of the Hall of Fame and you find a lot of consistent greatness without the elusive win.

Used to be a poster around here who was said to have finished 2nd twice.

              Tom Fenley 275th.

I don't recall anyone claiming to have come second twice and been able to prove it, although there are a few who have had two top hundred finishes.

Peter Gullestad (36th and 31st), Cormac O'Shaughnessy (51st and 86th) and Rob Pitt (YMA) (46th and 71st) are the only ones in the current HoF top 50 to have achieved this.

My initial thoughts on a team for next season:

    - Not looking beyond GW8 as I'll likely wildcard before that anyway
    - GW8 was chose as Man Utd, Spurs and Arsenals fixtures turn for the worst around that point
    - Avoid expensive Man City assets until we can try and work out Pep's starting 11

    With this in mind:

    Fabianski (4.5) / Foster (4.5)
    Bailly (6) / Kolasinac (5.5) / Trippier (5) / Daniels (5) / Lascelles (4.5)
    Sanchez (11) / Sane (8) / Sigurdsson (7.5) / J.Rodriguez (6) / Fletcher (4.5)
    Kane (12.5) / Morata (9.5) / Deeney (6)

    - The keepers rotate nicely
    - Daniels covers Siggy when he has very tough fixtures
    - Daniels also forms a solid 2 out of 3 rotation with Rodriguez and Deeney for the first 5 weeks
    - Lascelles covers when Bailly Kolasinac or Trippier have very tough fixtures
    - Sane won't be in the same price bracket as KDB or Aguero, and doesn't take a striker spot at Jesus would
    - Fletcher as bench fodder

What are peoples thoughts on how realistic this team is?

Spurs are looking for £50m for Eric Dier which is way more than a player of his quality is really worth

They should do away with the homegrown player quota as it is forcing clubs into paying way over the top for players they normally would not consider

    1. Pap Le Cissier
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 24 days ago

I thinks it's a Double edged sword. Do away with it and it brings down prices, but might make the home grown situation worse

Keep it and we'll continue to see over inflated prices for players half the calibre of the same talent from another country

      1. Somalion
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 24 days ago

Another consideration is teams buying up homegrown players and plonking them on the bench whereas if there was no rule then they might not be in as good a team, but they'd play and develop.

They have best defence in league. A small pitch size change will not affect that defence. They are really organized

Spain u21's tonight and a bit of Sandro scouting on the agenda. Possible Everton target apparently who had a good last season at Malaga scoring 14 goals in 30 games. Potential 3rd striker option if he's any good I'd say. Can play anywhere across the front 3. Not sure if he's a starter in this Spanish side but hey, something to watch if you're bored. Might even get another chance to see some wing wizardry from the enigma know around these parts as Del Boy. Luvly jubbly 🙂

If there's any keeper that I'll go 5.0/4.0 instead of 4.5/4.5 for, it's him. Do we think Robinson will be 4.5 or 4.0?

I think I will go with Foster/Myhill combo (8.5m) and just have Mee(4.5m) as one of my cheap rotating defenders to "cover" them Heaton home hauls. Burnley's away fixtures are tough...I see plenty of 1's & 2's for Heaton in there away fixtures.

Ah the deadzone.................................boredom levels sky high, might even watch Russia v New Zealand later,......

All things FPL, subject to price particularly and Salah imminent move to Liverpool, rough squad -

    4.5 4.0

    Moses/Trippier/Rose (6.0) T.Smith/Lowe 4.5 Olsson/Mawson (4.5) Evans/Nyom (4.5) 4.0

    Alli (10) Pedro (8.0) Salah (8.0) Sane (8.0) Kachunga 5.5

    Kane (13) Lukaku/Jesus (11)

    Exactly 100m

Don't really think Kaku or Jesus will be 11.0 (think 10.5 personally) but for the sake of a rough squad, I've gone for 11.0

Smith will probably be 5.0 which would still tempt me but Lowe on some set pieces at 4.5 will also be a good option

Really want Heaton-Robinson but that would require someone I predicted to be 0.5 more than they actually are eg Kane at 12.5 instead of 13.0 opens up 0.5 for 4.5 to 5.0

All really depends on Salah. If he doesn't sign for LFC, I'd have to go for Mane who I'd expect to be 1.0 or more dearer
