Manuel Lanzini followed up an encouraging first season with West Ham United by emerging from the shadow of Dimitri Payet during the second half of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Argentine international totalled six goals and three assists in 2015/16, tallying 100 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but was limited to just three goals during the first half of last season before the departure of Payet in January.

He produced a further five goals and three assists to end with 133 points, finishing level with fellow midfielder Robert Snodgrass as the Hammers’ top points scorer in FPL.

Now established as the main playmaker in Slaven Bilic’s side, Lanzini looks primed to kick on once again this season and become increasingly relevant as a Fantasy asset.

  • After starting last season priced at 6.5 in FPL, Lanzini’s 133 points may hand him a price hike to 7.0 or, at most, 7.5. With Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Everton’s Ross Barkley likely to be more expensive than the Argentine, he could easily emerge as one of the leading mid-price options.
  • The absence of Payet is key to how we view Lanzini. The 24-year-old fired in 43 shots following the Frenchman’s departure from Gameweek 21 onwards, ranking him joint-seventh among FPL midfielders along with Tottenham Hotspur duo Dele Alli and Son Heung-min. He also placed eighth for key passes (36) over that period, with only two midfielders – Spurs’ Christian Eriksen and Barkley – surpassing him on both counts.
  • Those impressive numbers are reflected in a significant increase in Lanzini’s goal involvement from 2015/16 to last season. That shot up from 17.8% in his debut season to 30.3%, highlighting his growing influence for the Hammers.
  • Set-piece duties are now a key factor behind Lanzini’s appeal. He took just three free-kicks and three corners between Gameweeks 1 and 20 while Payet was still at the club. But from Gameweek 21 onwards, he was charged with 14 free-kicks and 41 corners – considerably more than any other team-mate. While Robert Snodgrass, Mark Noble and, to a lesser extent, Michail Antonio provide competition for duties, Lanzini should continue to be the main man. Penalties could also be a factor next season. Noble remains the Hammers’ designated taker, but his starting role came under question as he continued to suffer from a “long-standing” abdominal problem. Lanzini stepped up in Noble’s absence to convert two spot-kicks.
  • During the second half of the season, Lanzini illustrated his ability to produce explosive returns. He registered nine FPL points or more just once up to Gameweek 20, but managed the feat six times from Gameweek 21 onwards. That saw his points per match average jump from 3 up to Gameweek 20 to 4.55 between Gameweeks 21 and 38, with that upturn perhaps an indication of what’s to come this season should Bilic hand him more responsibility.
  • While rotation is set to be a real concern regarding many of the leading midfielders in FPL, Lanzini looks unlikely to suffer from the same issue. The Hammers aren’t involved in any European football, while Bilic doesn’t have a vast array of options available to him. Lanzini completed 90 minutes in each of the last 14 matches and appears to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
  • While West Ham start the season with three away matches (mun, sot, new), their schedule over the first 10 Gameweeks is rated as the second most favourable according to our Fixture Ticker. They only face two of last season’s top 10 over that period and have plum home fixtures against Huddersfield Town, Swansea and Brighton and Hove Albion. The fixture list certainly suggests that investment in Lanzini could pay off, with the midfielder likely to be a differential for early adopters.

Would rather see Snodgrass running the team as the enabler and Lanzini as the attacking midfielder. That's sort of how I see him now since Payet departed.

If only he had someone decent to serve up the ball to but West Ham might rectify that before the window closes.

      1. Errr. He has one of the best passers in the league behind him. And one of the most willing box to box runners.

And someone to finish the chances he makes?

          1. That is the problem. Antonio and Carroll are not quite cutting it. We need Ayew to be at his best.

I have no idea how they're going to be priced - it could go so many ways.

Going by some of the articles on the FPL site, they take into account PpG when deciding prices. So I'd be surprised if Mane is cheaper than Coutinho.

It's hard for me to say having missed much of the season, but it sounds like he may not have been completely comfortable with role that Conte demanded. Should he be relied upon to produce high up the pitch when his game excels in the defensive areas? He doesn't seem have the pace to be running up and down the pitch in a 2-CM system.

Liverpool will have a complete overload of midfielders should Naby Keita sign. Given that the front 3 will be Firmino, Mane & Salah with Coutinho in behind.

    So Mignolet/Karius
    Clyne, Matip, VVD/Lovren, Milner
    Keita, Can/Henderson/Wijnaldum/Lallana
    Coutinho
    Firmino, Mane, Salah

And that's not even considering Sturridge, Origi, Ings or Solanke.

Individually, they're two of the highest performing players in the game. Placing both together in one person's FPL team won't change that. I may double up too (Maybe Erik over Alli) unless someone can convince me the Wembley Curse is genuine.

The return of the witch that destroys Kane's early season fortune is something that I'm unlikely to budge on. She's been killed imo.

But I have many options in midfield. Sane pogba ozil and if firmino is midfielder are really really good options.

After looking at home and away statistics in depth and seeing what a huge difference playing at home makes, I'm open to this theory.

Hopefully they become accustomed to the pitch during pre-season, so it becomes their home turf.

Could it be possible that their defence is affected the most? Could take them some time to employ their usual defensive shape upon a larger pitch than they're used to?

Possibly. Although I feel I would be guessing. I don't know why teams are better home than away - it could be psychology, pitch size/surface, or both. If both, what ratio? And what are the psychological factors?

We'll just have to watch Spurs in pre-season and see how they get on there, I suppose.

This was touched upon above but I'll bring it back up directly. Despite the mint finish to the season, I think the price hikes plus more critically, the new stadium (look how WHU have done in theirs) and the pitch size being different will not help Spurs and may put people off. They also don't seem to start the season well. Is everybody set on getting assets from Spurs in from the outset?

Crystal Palace's sponsorship deal with ManBetX is believed to be the 8th largest club deal by value in the Premier League!

How did that happen?! Is it just because other clubs deals haven't been finalised yet since the multi-billion pound surge in Premier League TV-rights?

Or have Palace just done extremely well in advertising their London-based club to investors?

A few seasons ago there were only 2 or 3 clubs that you would have to pay a premium for their players in FPL because there were only 2 or 3 genuine title contenders. Now there are 6 teams that you are now paying a premium regardless of them being title contenders or not

Agreed, it's going to make it so tough this year... I could see lots of transfer hits as folks flit from one big gun to the next chasing last week's points. I'd say there'll be at least 20 players at 9.5 or greater, maximum we'll be able to fit 3 or 4 from this list into teams, and that's with going light at the back! With a good defender or two it's more like only being able to afford 2 or 3 from this list:

      Spurs - Kane, Alli, Eriksen
      Chelsea - Haz, Costa replacement
      City - Kun, Jesus, KDB
      Liverpool - Mane, Cout, Firmino
      Utd - Zlatan replacement, Mkhi
Arsenal - Sanchez, Ozil, New striker
      Everton - Lukaku

Has Lukaku to Chelsea gone quiet, or is it a done thing?

            Fee not agreed.

Chelsea waiting until July 1 (this sat) to announce any signings anyway as new kit deal with Nike kicks in then

            Bakayoko and Alex Sandro, done

The worlds football associations need to start withdrawing their membership of FIFA so the whole rotten etifious will come crashing down for the sake of human dignity.

Repost on the next page Syd. It deserves better than a "lost at the bottom of the last page"
