Huddersfield Town secured the services of Aaron Mooy on a permanent deal on Friday, after the midfielder played a key role in their promotion winning season while on loan from Manchester City.

The Australian international joins the Terriers for a club-record fee of £8 million, which could rise to £10 million depending on add-ons, and has signed a three-year contract, with the option of an extra year’s extension.

Speaking to the club’s official website, head coach David Wagner expressed his joy at being able to wrap up a deal for a player whose performances were central to Huddersfield’s success last term:

“As I said many times last season, Aaron was right at the heart of our team. When he played well, we usually played well – and won! His performances for us understandably brought a lot of interest in him this summer, so it is a big statement that Aaron wants to return to us… He is still a great age and has space to improve, which is exciting for us too!â€

The History

Born in Sydney, Australia, Mooy’s big break came in 2006 when he joined then Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers at the age of 16.

Mooy stayed with the club for the next four years, before departing at the end of his contract in July 2010 due to being unable to break into the first-team squad.

The midfielder joined Scottish Premier League side St Mirren, and made 21 first-team appearances over the next two seasons, registering once goal and three assists, before returning to his homeland with newly formed A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers in June 2012.

He scored four goals in 49 appearances, before moving to Melbourne City, where his career really took off.

Mooy registered 18 goals and 13 assists in 53 matches over a two-year period, with his performances during the 2015/16 season in particular, when he was named PFA Player of the Year, leading to the move to City in June 2016.

The midfielder was immediately sent out on loan to Huddersfield though, with Mooy producing four goals and seven assists in 48 league outings including the playoffs as the Terriers gained promotion to the Premier League.

After representing Australia at U20 and U23 levels, scoring six goals in 13 appearances, Mooy marked his senior debut with a goal and assist in a 9-0 win over Guam in December 2012.

Mooy has played 25 times for his country, producing five goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Given that Mooy was never likely to break into the first-team picture at City, it came as little surprise to see Huddersfield’s Player of the Year return to the John Smith’s Stadium.

An all-round midfielder, Mooy boasts impressive technical ability, with his passing one of his main strengths, although his lack physicality and pace could be more apparent in the top flight. The Australian is, however, strong in a challenge and ranked fourth for tackles among Championship midfielders last season.

More importantly from a Fantasy perspective, he boasts tremendous quality through his set-piece delivery, and also took two of his side’s four penalties last term, scoring one and missing another.

Mooy impressively made more key passes (102) and successful tackles (114) than any team-mate, playing predominantly as the deep-lying playmaker in central midfield.

His output in the Championship, along with the fact Wagner has turned him into a more rounded midfielder, having played much of his football in Australia as a No 10, suggests a likely price tag of between 5.0 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

However, interest in Mooy could be drowned out by the attention given to another potential midfield target: Elias Kachunga, who was Huddersfield’s top scorer last season with 12 goals.

The DR Congo international made 36 of his 44 league appearances in the attacking midfield positions, with the other eight coming as a central striker.

He may well be classified as a midfielder in FPL then, and if priced similarly to Mooy, could hold the upper hand.

Wagner’s side struggled badly for goals last season, managing just 56 across the 46 league matches, suggesting that despite their favourable opening schedule, we should be wary opting for Huddersfield attackers as budget options.

The Terriers begin their campaign away to Crystal Palace, while over the first eight Gameweeks, they face just one of last season’s top seven (NEW, SOT, whm, LEI, brn, TOT, swa).

So should either Mooy or Kachunga impress in pre-season, there’s every chance they may be viable options as a cheap fourth or fifth midfielder, with Derby County’s Tom Ince potentially another option, with a fee agreed for the winger on Friday.

Mooy certainly looks capable of making the step up to the Premier League from a technical standpoint, and with his set-piece duties so prominent, he could be a factor in the coming season, particularly if he is the designated penalty taker.

But with other possible candidates in both midfield and attack and further new Huddersfield signings to come, Fantasy managers will hope that pre-season can provide some cast-iron evidence of a stand-out option.

Here's a topical Hot Topic for you.

If FPL are to release some early prices soon, who do we want?

I doubt they will give us Kane but who else would likely give us the best barometer for the price list?

    1. AA33

      Pogba, Jesus, Lukaku, Alli, King.

Sanchez' classification. Got a feeling he'll be a forward, and wondering I feel he'll still be essential as an expensive forward.
Would also like to see Firmino/ josh king.

Something like this would give a good idea I guesa

      GK - Butland, Heaton
      Def - Cahill, Valencia
Mid - Alli, Coutinho , Pedro
      Att - Jesus

Plus the bonus. Position and prices of
      Alonso,Moses, King, Dier, Firmino 😉

If I had to pick 3,

      Heaton, Liverpool mid, Llorente.

If Heaton is 4.5 then your cheap GK comment would be correct.

Liverpool mid gives a rough idea of how much the others may cost.

Llorente would help to guess Gabbi/Defoe/Benteke's price as third striker slot.

          😀

As a tease to get people talking about FPL more I see why they do this kind of thing but it just feels gimmicky. We on here complain through the beginning of the summer that there's too much speculation about prices this just increases that!

Why not release one name July 10th, two on the 11th, four on the 12th, etc; that would make it even more exciting 😉

Also, getting to know the price of some probably cheap newly promoted fodders like Ritchie would be nice.

Have FPL said they might release some early prices?
It's only happened once or twice before to my knowledge, in seasons when the FPL launch was delayed and they had not given us a date for it.

If they do give us some advance information, I would be more interested to know which players will be reclassified to a different position (e.g. King, Firmino, Milner and Moses).

I think he lost his credibility last season when his predictions of the launch date were vague and over-optimistic.

And FPL have pre-empted him this time by announcing the launch week themselves.

Would be a bit weird for Mark to start a hot topic like this if they wouldn't plan to do that. First time they have an official twitter account and are tweeting a lot so it makes sense really.

But has there been anything on FPL twitter yet?

I couldn't tell whether our Mark knew something or whether he was just suggesting that it might be a possibility.

As you say, they have been broadcasting a lot more information than usual on twitter for a year now, including the date of the next launch week, so I suppose they might have decided to break with tradition and release a few early prices.

For us I think it's more interesting to not get prices of the really big names as we're expecting them to be high anyway.

The likes of Sigurdsson, Alonso, Milner would be good. I'd also like to see some mid priced strikers like Defoe and Sandro to get an idea of any potential value up front.

Arsenal won't get Mbappe. But they will drive up the price and so when he goes to Madrid or Bayern etc it unsettles a forward who is at the club already. That starts a merry go round on which if they are smart they can capitalise. If Mbappe went to Madrid that is bound to put Benzema out of joint and then Arsenal can pursue him.

I could see Real selling both if Mbappe came in. Benzema is 30 so he is not going to get better.

Get more games out of James Rodriguez, Kovacic, Vazquez etc and promote some of the youth team. They don't need really strong backups for the league. Even Bale has said La Liga is easier than the PL:

Lacazette at £10m would be nice, also Sandro at Everton is hopefully in the £6.5-£7.5 bracket..
If J-Rod deal go's through could also be a great option if he's still Oop Mid

Like Mooy, but he's very much in the engine room. 4g 7a in 45(3) apps and with a 5.5 pricetag I suspect just not really going to figure on our radars unless a bandwagon begins.

As the article mentions, Kachunga (who we looked at here: http://whogottheassist.com/posts/461) might be better for HUD

Not going to do an article on him I don't think 🙂

Very good opening fixtures for sure. Lots depends on if they hit the ground running.

    Also of note regarding Huddersfield:
    https://www.htafc.com/news/2017/june/loan-goalkeeper-jonas-lossl-joins-town/

Jonas Lossl has been signed on loan with option to buy from Mainz, presumably to replace previously on loan keeper Ward

Numbers aren't too impressive for a struggling Mainz side the past season
    According to Squakwa:
    27 appearances
    5 clean sheets
    1.93 saves per game

Loris Karius also came from Mainz when he joined Liverpool, and his stats were strictly better than Lossl's
    34 appearances
    9 clean sheets
    2.53 saves per game

Mainz struggled a lot in general last season, especially compared to the one before, so the numbers don't necessarily tell the whole story

Phil Jones IF he stays fit is a good option. Kelly is the Crystal Palace defender. Don't know if he'll start. Just earmarked him for the bench.
Knockaert is almost a one man army for Brighton. Could be a mini Mahrez. Gross has a good reputation for set pieces. Another bench fodder.

I'm not a big fan of rotating keepers, but for those who are, I think the best bet from the start is likely to be Begovic/Fabianski, if they both come in at 4.5m.

Bournemouth and Swansea rotate home and away for 34 out of 38 gameweeks in 17/18, and whilst they both have Man City at home in their first three, the schedule looks promising (bar GW10) for the first 16 GWs, which should be more than enough to take you to your first WC.

Probably Foster/Myhill - minimum outlay at 8.5m, secure in case of injury or suspension, good fixtures to take me up to an early WC, and no chance of benching hauls in away games, where more save points come.

Just 6 clean sheets from West Brom last season. They love conceding a solitary goal late in a game. It was very frustrating last season - don't think I'll go there again.

I'd be surprised if their figure is that low again, though there may not be fireworks - it's just not statistically sustainable whilst conceding so few goals.

Heaton and Butland are ones to wait for the WC with their opening fixtures, for me.

For all the talk of Heaton picking up save points in tough away games, Burnley are very unlikely to keep a CS in those matches. Their first five away fixtures are che/tot/liv/eve/mci - Heaton scored 3/3/1/2/1 in those fixtures last season. For 5.0m, I want a chance of points every week, as good as he'll be at home.

More a fan of 'fire and forget' 4.5/4.0 here, think with rotation bench points are inevitable.

That rotation is very good though!

I'm still thinking Begovic, Foster or Gomes are the main men really, with Foster the prime candidate due to decent opening fixtures.

      Rubbish.

Lost Izzy on day one of the TdF fantasy game with a lumber injury. He's out for the duration and needs an operation today, Game over for me before it's barely begun.

He was Maverick enough to have won a stage or three in the mountains by going on to the attack, as oppose to Froome who just needs to sit back mostly. He's agreat descender and this year had a few downhill finishes.

      Pfffft.

Really bad weather on day one. Two very good riders, and popular picks, crashed out
on very wet roads for a time trial.

Valverde and Izaguirre are top riders.

I thought KDB was poorly priced last season. Hopefully he will be cheaper this year given his average position on the pitch and his lack of goals.

Hard luck, inspired Lund pick. I think Porte was right to be cautious, he'll be happy to bide his time with the pressure off for now.

Yes he was right to be cautious...they all were.

It got missed a bit on the commentary but Froome was equally cautious at the start of his ride. Somebody must have realised that actually yesterday was a great chance to get a jump on the field and then he really picked it up. Adantage of riding last and knowing that so many others had put safety first.

LOI side Bray Wanderers are in big trouble. Spent big money on players at the start of the season and still couldn't get fans in despite currently being 3rd in the league. Owner pulling out and players have been told to find new clubs. They may not finish the season.

    FAO Official FPL

With Sandro likely to threaten his minutes, Alonso should not be significantly increased in price.

There is even an argument for keeping him at £6m because Conte is not going to bench a £60m left back.

Maybe with Hazard out, Alonso could cover further forward on the left wing. An OOP Alonso would be too much to ask for I think

Palace, Leicester, Watford is a good 3 way rotation but defenders probably not cheap enough. They play HUDD, BRIGHTON, BRIGHTON in 1st 3 games.

The season leading to his 5.5m price tag he had 4 goals, 5 assists, 0 yc in less then 2100 minutes.
Last season he managed 6 goals, 4 assists, 4 yc in over 2800 minutes.
I think he got the same amount of baps in both of those seasons.

Of course this means very little as players tend to rise fadter/higher then the opposite but one can dream of a bit better then 8m.

        Gone for Kittel myself.

Cav will be glad that the race has opened as it has. It will ensure very few risks by the top riders this week as the SKY train will stay together and just feel anybody back in to protect Froome's lead...meaning a slower race.

That will suit Cav just fine so he may have a surprise left in the tank. Also Lund may have enough to compete again.
