In addition to the recent raft of player price reveals, earlier today Fantasy Premier League announced that they have introduced a new chip ahead of this week’s launch.

While the two wildcards, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips remain intact, All Out Attack has belatedly been given the elbow, replaced by a brand new “Free Hit” chip.

Essentially, the Free Hit can be used once in a season and allows you to make unlimited changes to your entire 15-man squad for a single Gameweek.

Once the deadline for that Gameweek has passed, though, you squad immediately reverts to the previous line-up.

It’s important to note that you cannot use this chip to play the market to your advantage.

Any value gained/lost by those players drafted in as temporary new additions will not effect your squad.

This only applies to new players acquired on the Free Hit chip.

Ie, if you already have Alexis Sanchez in your original squad and choose to keep him on your Free Hit Chip, then his price would still be subject to fluctuation.

So if you have any players plummeting in value in your original squad, playing the Free Hit chip won’t stop their price drops from being taken off your budget.

Of course, if you choose to use transfers or the Wildcard instead, you’d avoid those drops in cost and earn the appropriate value from any rises.

Arguably, then, the Free Hit chip could be used to help temporarily trade out injured and/or banned players that you ultimately want to retain. If they’re seen as expendable, a transfer out is perhaps the best solution.

Like the second Wildcard, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips, the Free Hit chip could be used when planning for Double Gameweeks in order to maximise the number of players with two fixtures.

A specific example of this would be Double Gameweek 27 last year, where Stoke City and Manchester City were the only teams to play twice.

Despite knowing that both sides blanked in Gameweek 28, many managers took points hits to bring in the likes of Sergio Aguero and also played their Triple Captain chip on the Argentine.

The Free Hit chip would have allowed us to temporarily acquire City and Stoke assets without the need to tear apart our teams, while also navigating the upcoming blank more efficiently.

However, it could also be used as a reactionary chip.

Although this may be a helpful tool as a quick fix when your squad is hit by injury and suspension, it could ultimately come in handier when utilised on those Gameweeks hit hard by FA Cup postponements.

We witnessed this last season in the afore-mentioned Gameweek 28, where only four fixtures went ahead.

Bournemouth’s Josh King was the star turn that day, serving up a season-high 18-point return at home to West Ham.

The Norwegian had bagged four goals in as many matches prior to that fixture but, with many managers choosing to be prudent with their points hits, he was drafted in by just over 141,000 for Gameweek 28 and selected by only 252,000+.

With the option of a Free Hit chip, King would surely have been a major player in far more squads for a Gameweek that also saw the likes of Everton and Liverpool participate.

As this comment from Lateriser in this morning’s Hot Topic also pointed out, though, the Free Hit Chip could also help take advantage of big fixture swings and help you load up on sides with very appealing fixtures.

In that respect, it could be viewed as more subjective and dependent on the players you hold and state of your squad in any given Gameweek.

Certainly, when assessed against the merits of the All Out Attack chip, the new Free Hit chip looks a far more useful addition and one that should afford a greater degree of tactical variety from FPL managers over the course of 2017/18.

Let's list the questions we have about the new Free Hit (FH) chip. Here are a few to get started:

If I transfer a player out to avoid a price drop, then later in the week I activate the FH chip, does my team value drop by 0.1? And if I've used all my available cash does that mean my money in the bank goes to -0.1?

What happens to your second FT if you play the FH chip when you have 2FT?

What happens if I have activated my FH chip, then a player in my original squad gets a knock and I'm desperate to transfer him out as he's going to lose 0.3 before the next Gameweek. Am I stuck with him until after the Gameweek deadline? (I assume so, but would appreciate some clarity)

      a) Your team would be exactly as it was for the points scored in the week previously. Your team value would drop if the players in that squad drop. The -0.1 scenario is not possible.

      b) Not sure, but I'd imagine you keep it as the whole squad just resets.

      c) Yes

So any transfer made before the FH chip is activated becomes considered a FH transfer the moment I hit the FH button? What if I have bough a player in to gain 0.1 from a 0.2 rise, then transferred him out again for the player I really wanted for that coming week. Then, later, I make more moves using my 0.1 gained and hit FH button?

My understanding is that you would lose 0.1m on that player as if you still owned them - it wouldn't affect your money in the bank - just as if they were still in your team.

I expect a second transfer is dissipated by this chip, like when you play a Wildcard.

And yes, I think you're stuck with them in that case - any transfers are for that week only - your team reverts back to how it was.

I think there's a clue in the fact that once FH is activated, it cannot be deactivated again (unlike WC, BB, TC).

To my mind this implies that a line is drawn at the point FH is activated. The post-FH squad will be the 15 players at the point of activation. This would also apply to money in the bank.

If correct, then in your first example you can avoid the price drop provided you transfer the player out before activating FH.

It's not clear what would happen to the existing FTs. If my understanding above is correct, then we will be able to use FTs before activating FH. It's possible that any unused FTs will not be carried into the next GW though.

In your final scenario, my guess is the same as yours - that you would be stuck with the price loss. All part of the risk vs return !

Exactly, where is the line drawn with the FH chip? If it's at the moment it is played then surely everyone will leave it until the last possible second to activate the chip. Cue the FPL website crashing before a big blank Gameweek.

Good point. I'll probably activate it a bit earlier. Need enough time to get all of the transfers confirmed.

Also, imminent price changes could force us to activate early in order to be able to afford the desired team.

Very interested interview with Rooney featured in the guardian.

It was just a frustrating time. It was the first time in my career I didn’t play. I was on the bench and that’s not me. I needed to play but I was also the captain of Manchester United so I needed to stay positive around the place and try not to bring any negativity.

'Rooney made it clear he had abandoned his wish to reinvent himself as a midfielder and would be leading from the front for Ronald Koeman’s team.'

If I had gone to China, which was an option, then I would have called it a day,” Rooney said. Not on Merseyside, though. “I want to play for England. You can’t get in the England squad because of what you have done before. You need to be playing well to represent your country. I understand that and I respect that. That’s what I have to do now.”

      This confirms 3 things

1 That Rooney will be an undisputed starter.

2 That he will play as striker

3 That he will try and perform at a high enough standard to be selected for the World Cup in 2018

More interested in Rooney's price now people?

“November,” Rooney replied to the question of when he had started to think he had to cut himself free from Old Trafford. “I started the season doing OK. I’d done well, I had a bad game at Watford away, and that was it [out of the team].”

It's clear he doesn't want to be a midfielder anymore so he's going back to what he does best. An unstoppable goal scoring machine

Never has been the best striker in the world and I'm afraid he was already in decline in 2007.

The best I ever saw Rooney play was at Euro 2004 before he got injured. When he broke a bone in his foot prior to World Cup 06, he's never been the same since.

In 2004 Rooney was unstoppable, an unbelievable player for his age (still a teenager) but while Messi and Ronaldo progressed massively well into their 20's/30's, I'm afraid Wayne, whilst still being good, hasn't been great since those European Championships.

If someone reads it and thinks that fpl is live, but then they read the bit underneath and realise I'm just stating the first four letters in Liverpool. So it's funny to imagine someone getting excited for a split second but then reading the other part and realising that, although what I said was factually accurate it wasn't the news they wanted

Of course he is not nailed, none of the City players are. He played lots last season, but came in fresh later in the campaign. City also have more new recruits now that need Gametime.

Doubtless he will play most games, but some will be on the wing. Love him as a player but 10.5 he will only be an option when the fixtures are very kind, not a season keeper like say Lukaku

They didn't drip feed the chip info on twitter in previous seasons, I think? In that case, they may me having a few issues in testing and are using this time to get them sorted. Maybe they were planning to launch the game today, but it has genuinely been delayed.

it's the same nonsense every year on here. Everyone second guessing.

No one knows. It will launch when it's ready. There's still loads of time before the season starts.

I have no problem with the game releasing in 3 weeks, I don't care, but just hyping it up "releasing week of 10th", drip feeding player prices, it's all a bit much.

It's possible they have tech issues but I doubt it, they wouldn't have made the public announcement that it was launching this week(only last week) if there was any kind of problem with the QA phase

Irritating your customers isn't a great way of endearing them to your product.

They are not doing it on purpose. Maybe they are testing all the versions before launching so that they don't irritate you with crap product

I understand your second point but i would contest that they are doing it on purpose because they are deliberately drip feeding player prices, which is irritating when the good folk addicted to FPL just want to get started on their team. Better for the Premier League to get the game ready ahead of time and then be explicit about a start day, to manage everyones expectations

In what way? This is no different to any other season, if anything there was a bit of a heads up.
What irritates a customer is releasing a product that is not ready like they did about 4 years and cocked up gameweek 1.
Maybe you should find a new provider or be patient and stop bleating.

6.5m to start with. If he starts scoring, anything up to 8.0... If somehow he becomes good again, he could be worth up to 9.0m

Not going to lie I'm a pretty frugal guy and seeing some of these prices are a little jarring. Dwight Gayle 6.5m? Jesus 10.5? This 100m will feel like a coupon this season.

Alli 9.0 would've been silly though.

Maybe the prices are less elsewhere or maybe we get a slightly bigger budget?

      1. _Make
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

There is no way the budget will ever be more or less than 100m, since prices are all relative and abstract and because 100m is a very nice round number. They will just adjust the individual prices accordingly.
