Stoke City were the first Premier League side in first team friendly action as they began their pre-season tour of Switzerland with a 1-0 victory in the opening fixture of the “2017 Uhrencup”.

Neuchatel Xamax 0 Stoke City 1

With just five days of pre-season training behind them, Mark Hughes’ side played out their first summer encounter and earned a 1-0 win over Swiss second division side Neuchatel Xamax in the Tissot Arena.

The opening match in the four-team Uhrencup – which also features BSC Young Boys and Benfica – was decided by a late own goal as Hughes used the opportunity to field two different XI’s over the two halves.

Mixing first-team players and Under 23s, Hughes started the match in a 4-2-3-1 formation and fielded Jack Butland in goal ahead of a defence that included captain Ryan Shawcross and full-backs Phil Bardsley and Erik Pieters.

Bojan started in the central attacking midfield position, with want-away Marko Arnautovic also named in the starting line-up. Saido Berahino was the lone striker.

Hughes’ early plans were disrupted by a back injury for Bardsley, who departed on 19 minutes. The problem was later reported as a knee injury.

Berahino is a player who will be monitored by Fantasy managers in pre-season, with the former West Brom man surely burdened with the responsibility of scoring 15+ goals next season. Stoke’s official website described the striker’s appearance as “incredibly trim”, although he fluffed his lines having been presented the best opportunity of the first half.

The striker was replaced by Peter Crouch for the second period as Hughes retained the same shape. Giannelli Imbula, Glen Johnson and new signing Josh Tymon were also introduced.

It was Belgian starlet Thibaud Verlinden – promoted to the first team squad for 2017/18 – who provided the spark that led to the match’s decisive moment when his 87th-minute cross was diverted into his own goal by the unfortunate Mustafa Sejmenović.

Hughes seemed happy with the win and overall performance, explaining the intention behind his line-ups.

“We mixed it up tonight with some young guns and some more senior lads, and I think that was the right thing to do. We are just getting started, and it is all about getting the minutes on the pitch, getting the timing of your play right and I saw quite a bit of that tonight which is satisfying.”

However, the Potters boss is likely to have been distracted by confirmation of the transfer request submitted by Arnautovic earlier that day.

With a renewed bid from West Ham United looming, this threatens to cast a shadow over pre-season preparations, with Arnautovic a crucial component of the Stoke attack.

Hughes’ post-match response to the news indicated this was perhaps not a situation that will quickly be resolved.

“Marko and his people have put in a transfer request, but that happens on occasions. Any comings and goings are at our discretion, and it’s our decision ultimately. Players can express an opinion or a view in terms of where they see their future but at the end of the day contracted players are contracted to the club and ultimately we have the final say.”

Arnautovic limped off after the first half in Switzerland and it remains to be seen if yesterday’s breaking story impacts on his pitch-time in the fixtures to come.

Stoke’s next Uhrencup encounter is against BSC Young Boys on Wednesday.

Stoke City XI First Half: Butland; Bardsley (Edwards 19), Shawcross, Sweeney, Pieters; Adam, Jarvis; Arnautovic, Bojan, Telford; Berahino.

Stoke City XI Second Half: Haugaard; Johnson, Wollscheid, Souttar, Tymon; Muniesa, Imbula; Ngoy, Shenton (Campbell 80), Verlinden; Crouch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Interested in what tactic people are looking at when picking their initial squads?

    a) Short term – first 3 matches, looking to wildcard first international break when early form has been established
    b) Medium term – first 7 matches, looking to wildcard second break
    c) Long term – planning for the full first half of the season and wildcarding when disaster strikes

I’ve always worked to option b – but I’m considering setting up my team solely for 3 weeks given I almost always wildcard early when it all goes wrong anyway!

Interested that it worked for you 731 after GW1, and using BB early doesn't appear to have been over detrimental come the DGW's.

It was the best way to do it. It freed up the TC chip aswell because it meant I could play it in whoever DGW I liked. If you play BB in a DGW you can't play TC that week aswell.

I'm more of a C man. I take a couple of hits during that first break if there's a standout player being brought in. Ideally I see the first wildcard as a defensive weapon, used after I screw up or end up with half the team crocked, and the second one for future DGWs. The last few seasons I've been a B man due to screwups.

B - after 6 games I will start in bring in Stoke and Everton players who I dare not touch early on.

Same plan as last season... strongest team for GW1, with the hope that most perform and become bandwagons/price risers, etc.

Ideally, I'll have nailed this and can retain my wildcard.

Most likely, I'll hit the wildcard prior to GW2 and bring in a full squad of players who are being transferred in/rising in price and are starting the season in-form (find players who hit the ground running can continue their run and become bandwagons).

After this, I will manage my team with minimal hits, spending as little as possible on my bench and putting together a strong set of players who I will mostly remain loyal to, provided they are producing strong stats/points/etc.

It worked for me last season - finished around 650 in world but was actually around 120 in world going into last couple of game weeks, before choosing Costa or Kane and plummeting.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - that's the theory I'm going with.

Heh. It's really not my idea - I'm just the one who has to help explain it.

I think we were all pressing for AOA to be removed. The jury is still out on this one and I think we have to use it in anger first.

My initial reaction to it is that it's interesting but I'm wondering if again, the more seasoned player will be able to use it to a bigger advantage.

The new chip essentially rewards failure, Mark. It's further dumbing down of the game that will lead to more template teams. And there's a lot of unanswered questions still about what will happen when you activate the chip.

Nobody forced you to remove Sánchez for a "no hoper", that was a choice you made because you thought it would benefit you more than keeping the Arsenal man.

I'm ill and therefore a bit confused.

How is this new chip different to a wildcard exactly?

    Sorry for the ignorance...

Your team resets to what it was before you used the chip after the gameweek it's used in

You use it, new players only last one gw. After that terminates all your prior players revert back to previous team

    3. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      9 years, 12 hours ago

It's just for one week and then you revert to your previous squad.

Only works for one week then you get your old team back

Only last for one GW, then team reverts to what you had before using the chip.

In a Wildcard, you can change your team to whatever you want and you will carry on with that team for the next gameweek.
In the new chip, you get to choose a new team just for one week.

      Thanks all.

Like a fire and forget instantly.

Not sure how I feel about this, could be an interesting dynamic of those that prepare for after blanks and use this case those that prep for blanks and use later

    This new chip...

Is it clear whether you can make a FT before activating the chip, so that the following gameweek you will actually keep said player?

    1. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 12 hours ago

My guess is that that's not possible

    2. The Bandit

      9 years, 12 hours ago

It's not clear, but it would be annoying if a player in your team dropped in price when you wanted rid

    3. Ziro
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 12 hours ago

Would be a good thing but I am afraid the chip-makers will keep it simple and have the FT wasted,

    4. Jazz!
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 12 hours ago

Not sure, but I think activating the chip would render the FT as useless. The original team before you made any transfers will return I reckon.

Part of the Liverpool mid/for mix up
Would pick mane and cout before him

      With current prices...

      Salah - 9.0m
      Benteke - 8.0m
      Lacazette 10.5m

My guess is 9.5m forward. Maybe 9.0m which would fill a gap with strikers in that price bracket.

      1. Clumsy Sakho
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 12 hours ago

        Can't see any appeal at all at 9.5. He's a 10 goal/season player.

        9.5m forward 😮

      amazing player

    5. The Tinkerman
      • 10 Years

Would have to be priced very cheaply for me to consider him as a striker. Wasn't worth his price as a mid, and now he will get less points.

Doesn't score enough goals or get enough assists. Would take Salah, Cout and Mane before him even if he was a mid.

Perhaps most people knew that the AOA chip was best used on GW38 of any season, due to the usual abundance of goals. The new chip is much more exciting. I admit I'm slowly warming to these chips.

GW38 was the worst week to use AOA. So many players were rested, with kids brought in that your defenders on the bench were bound to be called up.

        9 years, 11 hours ago

Yes, you did need to be a bit psychic.
