Wednesday’s release of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game means we’re now ready to officially launch our Projections and Rate My Team tool. Both have been updated and are available in our Members Area.

Members can get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once the season starts, members will be able to enter their FPL IDs to add their current squads. Until that point, squads can be built using the Build My Team feature. Once a team is built, it can be saved and shared by bookmarking the URL.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the summer friendlies reveal more on likely starting line-ups and tactics.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score in each Gameweek.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

When will these Projections be updated?
We will update the projections almost each day during pre-season. As we get more data on likely first choice line-ups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season – again, almost on a daily basis, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. Major updates are made on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

How Accurate is Rate My Team?
We’re not going to try and claim that Rate My Team is X% accurate – we’ve never attempted to track a figure, focusing our efforts on keeping the tool up to date to serve those who use it.

Instead what we will say that both Tom Fenley and Simon March were members of Fantasy Football Scout and also used Rate My Team – Tom and Simon were, as many will know, FPL champions in 2014/15 and 2013/14.

We’ve previously created a number of movies, together with the creator of Rate My Team Chris Atkinson, which explain the tools in full detail. You can view these below.

I am actually quite happy with me team just now!

Can you guys see any flaws? I will be wincarding reasonably early as per.

    Foster
    Yoshida Monreal Trippier Cedric
    Alli Erikson Coutinho Tadic
    Aguero Lukaku

    Subs Elliot - Carrol/RLC Rosenior

You need to monitor ongoings at the clubs:

      1) Will RLC play and if so, will he play in an offensive role?
      2) Will Yoshida start or does Pellegrino prefer Stephens or his new signings?
      3) Will Trippier be Spurs' first choice RB come the start of the season?

Arsenal may shift to 3 at the back.. Might mean less game time for Monreal... Coutinho might play further back than lat year with Salah coming in.. I think I would trade Erikson and Cout for Sanchez and someone else for arsenal cover

Competition for places and Howe does rotate plus Stanislas is an injury risk. Howe has Ibe, Stanislas, King, A.Smith, Mousset and Fraser all fighting for attacking places with Wilson, Defoe and Afobe fighting for the berth up front.

I'd love to see the players projections without any deductions based on their benching risk.

E.g. I may want to see what Aguero's projections are if he started every game. But now that they've been altered by human input, they're useless to me.

But if I know he's at least going to start GW1, and I'm planning a GW2 WC, then I'd want an unaltered projection for GW1. Which is impossible.

I use it to plan rotations, particularly around DGWs. It is useful to have an idea of how many pts a player scores on average so you can weigh up whether a DGWer is worth a hit.

But I never put stock in the actual numbers, because they've been modified...

Agreed, it should at least display the factor by which their scores are reduced, but ideally we'd be able to change them for our own viewing if we disagree with them. Guess this is complex to achieve, but a similar thing exists in the ticker for fixture difficulty.

Risky as Abraham might not start straight away and Hunemeier won't if there aren't any injuries. Also RLC and Mesa aren't confirmed starters every week. I'd say to downgrade Pogba to maybe Willian or Ramsey and upgrade mesa or Abraham.

Loses all appeal. At Swansea he is the man and his goal involvement is very high. Once he goes to Everton he will compete with Rooney, Mirallas, Klaassen, Bolasie, Coleman and Baines to get assists and goals. His output will drop and he might not even play every game given Everton's EL commitments.

Playing around with a few lineups; here's a big-hitter one I've come up with. What do you think?

    Foster
    Cédric / Dawson / Aké / Lindelof
    Willian / Ritchie / Sané
    Lacazette / Kane / Lukaku

    Ryan / Knoxkaert / Carroll / Rangel

Midfield is a little light (not a fan of having Ritchie AND Knockaert), don't like double WBA at the back, nor Rangel - but just a test!

Being forced to watch tennis by the Missus.

The most exciting thing about tennis for me has always been the scoring system and not actually the tennis itself....that part is just repetitive.

The scoring format is the thing that mainly provides the excitement with so many key moments and is possibly the best format of any major sport.

Heading for an early WC, and are prepared to take some risk. What would you do to this lot (or RMT, as they say)?

    Foster / Myhill
    Lindelof / Milner / Cedric / Löwe / Huhnemeier
Sanchez / Alli / Willian / Can / Loftus Cheek
    Aguero / Lukaku / Crouch

Too risky with the bench. Crouch probs won't start, Can won't cos Hendoerson is back and Lowe and hunemeirer aren't first choice either, while RLC will take a few games to get properly in the first team.

Really nice to think of him as a differential. I think I'm gonna root for him over Kane, Jesus and Lacazette, and pair him up with Lukaku.

I don't see him starting every game. Last season towards the end him and Jesus were playing a bit together, but now there is also B. Silva and possibly Sanchez coming in....

Is there anyone on there with some stas on how some of the best/most expensive players have done it the first two or three GWs in past seasons? We know Kane is a slow starter, and most of us remember being saved by the penaly Aguero netted last year. But how about Sanchez, Lukaku, the Liverpool mids and the attacking Chelsea players? Are there any patterns in which teams firing early, and which usually lays a bit low?

Talking of projections, whats the best any member has been able to create off the 100m?

I've got 346.23 for 1st 6GWs, with 61.4 projected for GW. I'd be interested in how good that is?

Should have said. No United allowed or wanted thanks. City leagues. Had none last year and finished top 4k.

        Thanks though!

Whilst hazard is out Willian and Fab but can easily have someone else. Even thinking of RLC as fourth!

In that case I'd downgrade fab to Redmond/Tadic as I think Southampton will do well attacking wise considering how badly they did last season and have good fixtures. That leaves 0.5 to upgrade Sane to Coutinho if you want as there is too much rotation at city.

    Lukaku - Kane - Aguero

If you were happy playing RLC or Chalobah every game, you could get a pretty tasty 343 😉

Quite like it. Although I wouldn't expect West Brom to score many goals, so Chadli's output may be limited...
