Next up in our summer series of team-by-team analysis of the 2016/17 campaign are Manchester City.

We start by checking out the team performance levels over the previous campaign to look for any trends of improvement before assessing the Citizens’ standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The arrival of Pep Guardiola helped the Etihad side up their points total from 66 to 78 last term, yet they finished some 15 points off the summit for the second successive campaign, claiming third position in the Spaniard’s first year in charge.

City also improved their goal tally, from 71 to 80, which was again the third best on offer, six behind Spurs at the summit.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

523, though 433 possible, though every other formation still possible.

523 is very bold. Finding it difficult enough to move away from the usual 3 defenders to 4.

Ignoring positions as formation can be adjusted, which trio would you pick?

    A) Milner, Ramsey and Firmino (433)

    B) Pogba, Ince and Defoe (343)

If it has any bearing, I have Lukaku as one of my strikers.

I'd stick with Firmino for the start. A more known entity. I'd wait till GW11 to Get Defoe and or GW 13 to get Benteke. Maybe Benteke is a better shout to start than Defoe even, but Firmino, despite not being as good value as the liverpool mids (probably) is probably your best option of the three. I've personally avoided all three for the start, though.

'Known' as in known how well he's likely to do, and how well he's likely to do in bad fixtures, as well as good. It's hard to have faith in Defoe for GW3 and 4, for example.

If United sign a DM, I would go Pogba (for nailedness, set pieces and advanced role)

I reckon there will be a lot of early wildcards from those going big at the back unless their defs get attacking points. Won't be much satisfaction with a cs when the mids and strikers hammer in the goals and get the baps 😉

      KdB is my choice too.

Fun fact on KdB: he scored 199 points last year. In his first season in the Premier League, despite a terrible injury sustained versus Roberto Martinez’s Everton in late January, his output was 10 goals and 8 assists. He appeared in just 25 games according, achieving 131 points in FPL. This translates into a 5.24ppg would have seen him return, if he’d played 38 games… 199 points!

So 199 1 season and probably 199 at the ppg he was outputting the season before, and a 0.5 price drop. Seems pretty decent to me.

Do like Sane as well, so not 100% nailed on yet, but yeah I'm going the way of the ginge for now.

      1. Netley Lucas
        • 10 Years

I agree, but is there a way of determining how the 1.5 margin with Sane can add/subtract value from the defence? 😆

Haha not that I can reel off now (it's sad, but I have so many useless facts now entrenched in my brain after doing the research lol)

What I can say is that Sane's ppg last year was 4.04, so looking at an output of 154 points over 38 games (par for an 8.5 mid tbh) last year, if you want a qualitative comparison to KdB's output.

On this, I'd reason that I'd prefer the points potential of Kev and paying 1.5 less in defence (in practice, these are moves like: Lindelof over Bailly; Cedric over Bertrand; maybe a 4.0 instead of a 4.5 at 3rd sub to afford a 5.0 defender).

Who do we think is nailed in the Chelsea backline? Azpi only? Cahill, Luiz & Rudiger rotating? Does Azpi get pushed into a wingback position and they all play? Who's most vulnerable out of the 4 for benching?

Not sure how Rudiger is on the ball, but I believe Luiz is safe based on how he can distribute and dictate posession. Azpi is so reliable and will play (but as u said might take up the RWB spot).
So Cahill is probably the most vulnerable.

Be interesting to see if Bernardo Silva hits the ground running. If he starts the first week and adds any contribution we'll probably see a flurry of early transfers with him at 8.0. I could see him nailing down a starting berth.

The thing with B Silva is that he normally plays at right wing (or did for Monaco), drifting inside in a creative capacity.. which may mean that Walker, really gets that whole wing to himself to provide width and could get really involved going forward, with Sane/Mendy (if he joins) providing the width on the opposite flank.

Have to see how they all gel together first, but at 8.0 and if he does hit the ground running that could be mighty fine indeed.

My worry for Lukaku is that Man Utd don't tend to put teams to the sword like Spurs, Pool and Citeh do.

My fear is Man Utd go 2 up then Mourinho shuts up shop and is more concerned keeping it 2-0 than going out and trying to blitz 4 or 5.

Spurs really go for the jugular, they want to score 5 every game. City and Pool are similar.

This is why I prefer Kane over Luka. Kane strikes me (pun not intended) as being in a team that won't stop creating chances no matter what the score is.

Mourinho likely to kill the game if he has a lead.

        1. Nomar

Alonso is great, but to me its the equivalent of having Kane at £20m.

Yea he's great but it means you'd now have 80m to spend on 14 more players.

I try and rhink of it like the salary cap in the NFL. Every penny you spend over the odds on one position has to come at the expense of another.

If you want Alonso at 7m then have him. But be prepared to deal with the ripple effect it will have on other positions in your team.

        2. Forever mirin
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 16 hours ago

Alonso plays for a good defensive team, is on free kicks, plays as a winger for the most part, hit the woodwork multiple times last year and had so many good crosses that didnt amount to assists due to poor finishing. Compared to a lot of 7m mids he is offer superior value imo. Far from overpriced.
Expect a monster score this year if CFC dont sign another LWB.

      Not me, but ....

personally I don't see anyone worthwhile under 8m (or 7.5m if you rate Rooney), so either you go big and play 3 up top, or you get a 4.5 non-playing striker and invest the money elsewhere.
