Tom Ince hits his third goal of pre-season as Huddersfield Town lose in Germany, while a Stefano Okaka strike is enough for Watford to seal their first victory of the summer.

Here are Tuesday’s notes.

SV Sandhausen 3 Huddersfield Town 2

Summer recruit Tom Ince scored for the third consecutive match as Huddersfield slumped to a 3-2 defeat against their Bundesliga 2 opponents.

The midfielder, currently one of only three Terriers players enjoying more than 2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, curled home from the edge of the area after coming on at half-time.

Pre-season goalscoring exploits always need to be taken with a generous measure of salt – Burnley’s Andre Gray (9 goals) being a prime example last summer – but Ince’s form is welcome for those of us looking for an asset to exploit Huddersfield’s kindly start to the season (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur).

Elsewhere, club record signing, Benin forward Steve Mounie, was also on the scoresheet – his second goal in as many matches since his move from Montpellier.

Both goals were set up by Rajiv van La Parra.

The match was rather less memorable for defender Martin Cranie, who was brought on after 54 minutes and promptly had a hand in two of the German side’s goals, including the concession of the penalty that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Town coach David Wagner again stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and made a raft of changes at both half-time and on the hour-mark.

But a number of players remain unavailable to him. Tommy Smith (foot), Nahki Wells (ankle), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) are injured, while Aaron Mooy is still on extended leave following Australia’s participation in the Confederations Cup. Meanwhile, Scott Malone suffered a knock and was forced off on 40 minutes.

Huddersfield Town XI: Lossl (Coleman 46); Scannell (J Williams 46), Jorgensen (Edmonds-Green 75), Schindler (Cranie 46), Malone (Lowe 41); Hogg (van La Parra 60), Whitehead (D Williams 60); Kachunga (Billing 60), Palmer (Lolley 46), Quaner (Ince 46); Depoitre (Mounie 60).

Viktoria Plzen 0 Watford 1

A Stefano Okaka goal 10 minutes from time handed Watford their first victory of pre-season.

The striker, currently the Hornets’ only fit first team forward, scored from close range having been set up new signing Will Hughes.

The former Derby County midfielder had been handed 20 minutes by coach Marco Silva to make a good first impression, and he did just that.

Silva again employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match in which neither goalkeeper was overly busy, but right-back Brice Dja Djédjé at least caught the eye, coming on at half-time and impressing in an unfamiliar role on the left flank.

Etienne Capoue was again deployed as part of the attacking midfield three behind the striker, with Ben Watson and Abdoulaye Doucouré occupying the roles in the double pivot.

Watford XI: Gomes (Pantilimon 60); Janmaat, Prödl, Kabasele, Holebas (Dja Djédjé 46); Watson, Doucouré; Berghuis (Amrabat 46), Capoue (Hughes 68), Success (Sinclair 68); Okaka.

Better options at 5 mill to start the season.
There opening 4 fixtures bar Brighton are clean sheet friendly plus no Huth so I'd be worried.

Eriksen is a central cog in the Spurs machine. But what if that machine misfires at first at Wembley? Alli, on the other hand, will still get on the end of things, somehow, anyhow. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

Had Ince from the day fantasy opened, great player, scores loads for a CM. I think he can hit double figures this year for goals. Something around 10 goals, 5 assists which would make him well worth his price tag. I think he'll match people like Zaha.

    A) Milner, Kolasinac, Elliot, Gayle
    B) Lindelof, Cedric, Begovic, Benteke

Which do you think is better for the first 6 weeks? A lot more attacking presence from Milner and Kolasinac with Gayle also scoring 2 goals in 1 pre season game so far. But then you have the extra balance and security from B as Benteke is a goal every other game striker with Gayle untested with Lindelof not having much attacking presence but United's defence is always solid. Cedric speaks for himself at 5.0. Which do you think? (This is assuming Milner keeps his place if Liverpool sign Robertson and assuming Liverpool sign Van Dijk)

        Lukaku is though, right? 😉

I believe so. He certainly will be eventually.

Some crosser of the ball and a natural left footer it makes sense for him to eventually start.

Yeah, it seems Klopp needs someone to overlap Salah/Mane and get crosses in from the byline, as they are natural inside forwards.

I reckon Moreno will be sold and Milner will remain first choice, however I can see Milner being rotated more often this season as he seemed to tire quite a bit towards the end of last season

What are we thinking about J Rodriguez at £6 million. Great fixtures to start, on target last night. Is he a shoe in at striker or will he compete with Rondon?

He's better than Rondon imo, he's my 3rd forward 🙂

Looks a good bet if you need a £6m striker.

I expect him to start behind Rondon.

But I have little faith in this West Brom squad atm. It looks weak.

personally i don't really understand why j rod is still a striker at a premier league level

His goalscoring record is piss poor

He was terrific before the injury. Was extremely popular in FPL at one point.

If he stays fit he will likely be a decent pick the struggle is that though

James Milner or Bellerin? With Liverpool buying Robertson, does that mean Milner will be playing as midfielder again whilst being classed as a defender?

i cant see milner playing in the midfield tbh. i think robertson will be just a backup, but could leave milner on the bench either

Anyone able to offer some advice?

    GK: Foster / Fabianski

DEF: Luiz / Trippier / walker / Cedric / Hunemeier

    MID (option 1): Sane / Mane / Fabregas / Ramsey / Loftus-Cheek
    MID (Option 2): Sane / Mane / Ali / T.Carroll / Loftus-Cheek

ATT: Lacazette / Lukaku / Abraham

Which midfield option is better and/or what other changes would you make?

    Cheers

Good team, I would go option A. But wouldn't have luiz, get a cheaper defender and then get a better midfielder for fab

Thanks Lew, was thinking that Luiz was the cheapest win into the Chelsea def but the attacking threat isn't there with him.
May go Pogba/Ake instead but there's still plenty of time to decide.

        I smell an early WC

    2. Your arse is hanging out the back of it. KDB poor value, try Eriksen or Coutinho, who is a bargain. Knockaert is injured, and the rest of the midfield is kak.

If you really, really want those strikers, much more thought needed.
